12 THINGS
MOVE TO DO WHEN YOU
Moving into a new home is such an exciting time! However, from the moment you decided to move, to closing day and beyond, your to-do list can seem a mile long.
Here are 12 things you can make sure to do while settling into your new home.

Remember to budget for furniture and window treatments. You’ll likely want new pieces and there are some awesome local shops to explore when you’re ready. Shopping is way more fun with a dedicated budget!
- Lisa Hayse
CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS WITH THE POST OFFICE AND ALL ONLINE SHOPPING SITES.
Let’s face it... Driving to your old address to pick up a package is a pain. It’s better to update your address with USPS and Amazon as soon as you close on your home. Be sure to let your friends and any other companies you receive mail from know your new address.
SECURITY CHECK! CHANGE OUT YOUR LOCKS, AND REPROGRAM YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPENERS.
There’s no telling who has a key to your home or an extra opener. Get new locks and have your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. Smartlocks are a convenient choice as they can be controlled and monitored from your phone. A home security system and invisible fence for our four-legged family members are also a part of the security checklist. And, remember to check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well as locate the water shut-off valve.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO YOUR NEIGHBORS. This one may seem difficult, especially if you’re an introvert, but walking around to the five houses to the left and right of you (and anyone directly behind you) is a good way to get a feel for the neighborhood and who lives around you. Plus, you never know if you might find that perfect babysitter or new friend that lives next door!
CONFIRM ALL UTILITIES, TRASH, CABLE AND INTERNET HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED.
A good REALTOR® will remind you to do this before closing, but it’s not a bad idea to double-check.
PLAN YOUR COMMUTE TO WORK.
This is probably something you’ve thought about before making an offer, but now that you’re moved in, it’s wise to drive around and get a feel for the lay of the land. Make sure to check the main thoroughfares for any construction closures and how long it takes with and without traffic.
GET A PROFESSIONAL DEEP CLEAN, INCLUDING CARPETS.
SCOPE OUT THE GROCERY STORES AND LOCAL SHOPPING.
While you’re driving around, make sure to find your closest gas station, grocery store, pharmacy and car wash. Of course Google will tell you, but nothing beats actually driving there and remembering where everything is.
RESEARCH AND JOIN A LOCAL SOCIAL GROUP.
Chances are that your neighborhood has a Facebook or NextDoor page, which are great ways to connect with your new neighbors. Stop by Visit Wichita, City Hall meetings, or get a library card. If you want to branch out a little, reach out to US! We’d be happy to help you get plugged into a variety of groups.
VISIT THE DMV.
No matter where you’ve moved from, you will eventually need to update the address on your driver’s license. Be sure to update your voter registration, too! Visit ksrevenue.org for all the requirements.
FIND NEW HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN YOUR NETWORK. If you’ve moved from a different city or state, it may be a good idea to ask your former family physician if they have any recommendations in Wichita.
UNDERSTAND HOW THE KANSAS CLIMATE CAN IMPACT YOUR YARD.
Find a trusted landscaper and tree expert to improve or maintain curb appeal! If you’re new to Kansas, it’s important to understand how our weather affects many things, like grass, planting, pruning and sprinkler blowouts. 11 1 7 2 8 9 10 3 4 5 6
While many homes look pretty clean, you can’t be sure just by looking. It’s best to have this done before you move in. Have you thought about trash bin cleaning? There’s several local companies that can clean your stinky bins!

MY FAVORITE THESE ARE A FEW OF

By Samantha Lucciarini
Welcome to Wichita, colloquially known as the ICT. As a third-generation real estate professional and a natural-born social butterfly, I love exploring our city through the eyes of a tourist. But it doesn’t stop there. There are several incredible gems just outside our city limits. Happy exploring!
BARTLETT ARBORETUM
Located in Belle Plaine and established in 1910, you can view 64 different trees and endless amounts of flowers. It’s a great place for weddings, concerts, benefits and a farmers’ market.
CY’S HOOF AND HORN
Located in downtown Sedgwick, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another restaurant that offers exceptional homemade meals like Cy’s. Home cooking at its finest!
ELDERSLIE FARM
A true farm-to-table dining experience located in Kechi. You can enjoy brunch, dinner, a creamery that utilizes traditional methods to produce fine cheeses, and even pick your own blackberries.
GRACE HILL WINERY
Whitewater, Kansas, is a lot closer than Napa, but don’t fret... You’ll feel like you’re on the West Coast when you arrive at this winery. They offer a ton of events, live music on Fridays and options for tastings. You can even participate in harvest every August through September!
GREAT PLAINS NATURE CENTER
A nature preserve in the middle of the city, The Chisholm Creek Park is a natural oasis and is the largest in Wichita at 282 acres! This is my favorite place to ride bikes or explore the miles of paved trails.
HOORAY RANCH
If you’re an avid hunter or wildlife enthusiast, the short drive to Kingman is worth it. The ranch boasts over 20,000 acres of intensively managed prime wildlife habitat. They offer several kinds of hunts and facilities for private events.
KANSAS STAR CASINO
This casino, located in Mulvane, is the perfect spot for a date night or getaway. With several restaurants, a hotel and a full calendar of events, get ready to be entertained.
LUCIANO’S
I’ve tried a lot of Italian food in my time and this gem in Mulvane is as close as you can get to a handmade dish from Italy. The traditional cuisine is matched by a genuine ambiance, complete with live music.
SHINDIGS BAR & GRILL
This isn’t just another restaurant, it’s an experience. The decor, architecture and ambiance of this former railroad freight station in Winfield are one of a kind. Situated right next to a railroad, the views from the second story deck are charming!
LIFE IS BETTER WITH ANIMALS & THE RIGHT RESOURCES
Written By Eric Litwiller, Director of Development & Communications Mental Health Association of Kansas
Written By LynnLee Schmidt, COO Tanganyika Wildlife Park
Moving can be a stressful time. Changing over utilities, packing and unpacking, closing on mortgages, forwarding mail, paperwork, paperwork and more paperwork! You’re in luck, however, because with 12 zoos in Kansas, you don’t have to travel too far to get your animal fix. So if the challenges and stress of moving feel a little big right now, reconnect with something bigger than you!
1) TANGANYIKA WILDLIFE PARK — The family-owned wildlife park is the only zoo in the world where you can giggle about giraffe slobber, feed a lorikeet, get caught in the middle of a lemur stink fight and end the day swimming with penguins. Their tag line is “A Wildlife Different Experience.” Head over to their website to see what they mean. twpark.com/belocal
2) SEDGWICK COUNTY ZOO — If you want to see the most animals in Kansas for the least amount of money, SCZ has you covered. With over 3,000 animals and 400 different species, you’ll discover something new every time you visit. In order to provide guests with a truly empathetic learning experience, the exhibits are designed to immerse them in the animals’ world. scz.org
3) KANSAS WILDLIFE EXHIBIT — This hidden gem dates back to 1901 and is coined “the original zoo.” The Exhibit is nestled in Riverside Park and is home to 25 different species of native wildlife and shaded by tall oaks. With daily keeper chats and feedings at noon, it’s a great place to take a mental health break! facebook.com/KansasWildlifeExhibit/
4) GREAT PLAINS NATURE CENTER — Enjoy a 2-mile walk along a trail twisting thRough the 240-acre Great Plains Nature Center and learn about the wild beauty and uniqueness of North America’s heartland. GPNC’s goal is to encourage public exploration, understanding and appreciation of wildlife and the environment while promoting sound environmental stewardship. gpnc.org

PAWNEE PRAIRIE PARK —
Featuring over 400 acres of natural parkland with hiking, biking and equestrian trails is a great place to reconnect with wildlife and enjoy bird watching. When you think of Kansas, you think of prairies, but you can get lost in the forest at this park.
Regardless of how you choose to reconnect, we encourage you to take some time to be reminded that your prob lems might feel big, but they’re small in comparison to the world. Relax, unwind, and welcome to the neighborhood.

Anxiety and depressive disorders are the two most common types of mental illness that affect Wichitans every year, directly touching the lives of an estimated 183,000 people in the metro area annually. Certainly, we all experience sadness or feel anxious on occasion. But for many, these moments are the direct result of a specific circumstance; the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, moving to a new city, etc. These numbers, however, reflect the percentage of our community who feel symptoms so strongly that it materi ally impacts our ability to perform the “normal functions of daily life.”
When anxiety is no longer about how much the vehicle repairs might cost and instead becomes a daily companion that affects our ability to sleep, maintain steady employment or social relationships, or feed or bathe ourselves, it’s possible that we have crossed the line from a situational concern into a mental illness. This is not a hard-andfast line with specific landmarks along the way. However, sudden and drastic behavioral changes and the inability to maintain our quality of life due to anxiety taking up large chunks of our day is a reasonable benchmark for concern.
Before your mental health issue reaches that point, there are several lifestyle changes that anyone can make, and MHA encourages the use of any and all healthy and sustainable coping skills in order to help people stay on track mentally. Animals are one thing that can help.
Nature in general — just viewing a park or green space from a window — has been shown to increase the brain’s production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins while lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol. And being around animals — domestic pets especially — decreases the feelings of loneliness and isolation that are a large detriment to good mental health.

“When I’m not working from home or co-working at The Hive, I love to pop into Reverie or Cocoa Dolce. Both are chic spots with delicious treats, where I can have meetings and get a change of scenery. When you work remotely, it’s all about finding places that inspire you.” – Andrea Hattan, founder of The Hive

LOCAL TIP

“My family and I love to eat at Stearman Bar and Grill. We love to watch the local planes take off and land, and the food is tremendous!
I highly recommend this experience of Americana with deep roots in Wichita’s aircraft history.”
