I grew up in the mountains of New York State and have been inspired by the Hudson River School of Painting. My father built houses and I also have always had an interest in Early American History and Architecture. I came to live in Southwest Ohio at a young age while serving in the military and working a long career in the medical field as an x-ray technologist. In college / studied History and Art History At Wright State University while earning a Bachelors Degree In Education.
I am self taught as a photographer and have spent the last 12 years visiting parks and other places to capture a wide variety of genre. I am passionate about observing and photographing beautiful light and color as it presents itself. It could be a beautiful sunrise or sunset or the light illuminating a flower or a bird, It might also be the light shining across a pasture or field of wildflowers. I also photograph farms and barns as well as horses and cattle as they graze.
As much as I enjoy capturing these images I also enjoy sharing them as well and utilize the power of social media to share my images on Facebook photo groups locally as well as all around the world. My hope is that you can enjoy viewing the these compositions in much the same way as I felt the joy of taking them.

The Airforce brought my family to the Upper Miami Valley almost 12 years ago where we decided to hang up our hats for good. Throughout our time here, we lived in three different houses, purchasing two of them. With every move, we kept running into the same challenges: where do we go to have fun and who are the most trustworthy businesses to use and help
us make our new home our own? In those moving moments, I knew I couldn’t be the only one running into the same obstacles and I knew I had to do something about it!

THE HISTORY OF
Treasure Island Park
Treasure Island and the Hobart Brothers
On a warm summer’s day, Treasure Island is full of life: from bicyclists gliding down the paved path, to boaters paddling out on the sparkling water, to park goers laid out on the neatly trimmed emerald grass. In the evenings, the amphitheater is alive with music and the boathouse is bustling serving fresh seasonal cuisine. Treasure Island is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in the Upper Miami Valley, and it all started with a dream; one that the Hobart Brothers had that would bring all of their communities together and give everyone space to enjoy outdoor activities and quality family fun.

At the end of WW II, Edward and William Hobart devised a vision for Troy and the Upper Miami Valley. With the help of the citizens of Troy passing a $450,000 bond, the brothers created a recreational program that included a municipal golf course, football stadium, and a winter sports arena; known today as “Hobart Arena.”
In 1946, the Hobart Brothers designed and developed the Hobart Boathouse to create a space for family and community gatherings and to provide a space for their boat club. It was operated by their employee welfare association but also housed Netzley Boat and Motor Sales. While the Netzley family lived in a two bedroom apartment inside the boathouse, club members had access to a lounge, a clubroom for meetings, and a watercraft showroom. Boats could be lowered and raised from the electric boat ramp in and out of the lagoon that opened into the Miami River.
By means of a drawbridge, park goers would come to picnic, check out the windmill powered lighthouse, and the free-standing crow’s nest. The Hobart Brothers hosted their first company picnic that year, which was pirate themed, and drew in a crowd of about 1,500 people.
The City of Troy took ownership of the Hobart Marina and Boathouse in the late 70’s and completed many restoration projects throughout the years. In 2005, they integrated the extension of the recreational trail and amphitheater and continue to preserve the land to this day.

The Boathouse
Over the years, the Hobart Boathouse was home to a few different restaurants but now houses the Smiths’ Boathouse Restaurant, featuring seafood and steak cuisine. Here guests can enjoy seasonal dishes in a family-friendly atmosphere either inside the restored boathouse or outside on the patio overlooking the Miami River. Recreational Trail
The first trail for recreational use was created back in the 70’s. In the early 2000’s the city added 10.5 miles of paved trail connecting the old trail to the Great Miami Recreational Trail, the longest paved recreational trail in the U.S. with a whopping 93 miles, traveling through Montgomery, Miami, and parts of Shelby Counties.
State of Ohio Water Trail
One of 22 in the U.S., this water trail includes 150 miles of waterway and is popular for kayaking and canoeing especially during Independence Day. There is a working boat launch for kayaks located near the entrance of the park beside the boathouse.
Amphitheater
Enjoy free concerts all summer long at the Treasure Island Amphitheater. Check out troyohio.gov for a list of events and dates.
Float Troy
The only place in the world where your hotel room is a tent floating on the river! These shoal tents are basically rafts, anchored in the river, with tent toppers. It should come as no shock that farms make up the majority of land here in the Upper Miami Valley. Even though corn fields span as far as the eye can see, this area is home to some pretty unique farms that you should know about! From historical to safari to fruit and veggie, these recommendations will surely peak your interest. Be sure to check out the locals’ favorite farmers’ markets too!
Carriage Hill Metropark & Farm
This historical farm provides a true reenactment/representation of what farm life was like in the 19th century. Enjoy this fully functional farm with crops and livestock and check out demonstrations on blacksmithing, woodworking, cooking, preserving food, and quilting. Also located here is a Horseback Riding Center that is open to the public with seven miles of bridle trails, indoor and outdoor arenas, lessons, camps, weekend trail rides, pony rides, and vaulting. Other amenities include a lake for fishing and five miles of walking trails through woodlands, wetlands, meadows, and prairies. The visitor center is located at 7800 E. Shull Road in Huber Heights

Flyer Field Dog Park at Kittyhawk Park

Flyer Field Dog Park at Kittyhawk Park is a designated space for pups to play off-leash. This community recreation area features separate areas for small dogs and another for bigger dogs. Both spaces feature a dog drinking fountain, misting fire hydrant, benches, trees, walking paths inside and around the perimeter of the dog park, shade structures and waste receptacles. Their paved parking lot is ADA-accessible. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset unless otherwise noted.

This spacious dog park is inside Duke Park and features two separate areas for small (under 30 pounds and large (over 30 pound) dogs. Dogs are permitted off-leash in the fenced dog park, and are welcome to accompany their humans on-leash around the rest of the beautiful and spacious Duke Park.

Charleston Falls Preserve
HIKING & BOATING
Stillwater Prairie Reserve & Maple Ridge Reserve
The diverse topography of Stillwater and Maple Ridge provides a variety activities for all types of nature lovers. Located on the outskirts of Covington, these two reserves are connected by a suspension bridge that crosses over the Stillwater River. When combining the two, visitors have access to over 429 acres of land with eight miles of hiking one way.
Stillwater Prairie Reserve is located at 9750 St. Rt. 185 and is known for its bountiful native prairie lands, along with woodlands and wetlands. Take a stroll on the 1600 foot boardwalk that wanders through the prairie, let the kids tromp around in the natural play area, cast a line into one of the two fishing ponds, or bring your binoculars to the wildlife pond. Other amenities include picnic areas with grills, two reservable shelters with electric, 5.69 mile trail leading to Maple Ridge and the suspension bridge, restrooms, and drinking water. River access for Kayaks and Canoes is available at 7790 Rangeline Rd.
Maple Ridge Reserve is located at 10430 OH-185 and is known for its mature woodland, rolling hills, and ravines. Situated at Maple Ridge is a Sugar House and Camp where maple sap is collected. They offer an educational maple sugaring operation from January through March. The reserve is pet friendly for those on a leash and provides a great two and a half mile trek for you and your canine. Check out wildlife at one of two ponds and cast a line at the fishing pond. Kayaks and canoes have access to the river here for a nice slow float down the river.
Lake Loramie State Park
A true nature lovers paradise with activities for all seasons of the year. Whether you are into boating, camping, fishing, hunting, or just being in nature, this is the place for you! Lake Loramie is located just outside of Sidney at 4401 Fort Loramie-Swanders Rd. In Minster. This 913 acre waterway is surrounded by 407 acres of land.
The lake is one of the original canal feeders and features a hiking trail along the old canal towpath. Hiking trails make up eight miles in total, including a trail that leads up to Blackberry Island. Barred owls and red-headed woodpeckers are common to camp here. Humans and pets can camp within a variety sites: full hook-up electric, non-electric, or cedar cabins available for reservation.
Additional amenities include a 600 foot beach for swimming, a nature center, dog park, disc golf and 15 picnic areas with grills, restrooms, and drinking water. Boats can launch from six different ramps including an additional adaptive ramp for paddle craft and pontoon boats. As long as the weather permits, winter nature enthusiasts can indulge in ice fishing/boating, ice skating, and snowmobiling.
Englewood Metropark
Another great option for those who enjoy nature all year round. Enjoy a variety of beautiful natural features such as rivers, lakes, waterfalls, woodlands, meadows/prairies, and wetlands. Spread out between Englewood and Vandalia, this 1900 acre plot buffers and protects the Stillwater River. East Park can be accessed from 4361 W. National Rd, West Park from 100 E. National Rd, North Park from 500 Old Springfield Rd, and South Park from 9331 Meeker Rd.
Twenty miles of hiking trails encompass Englewood Metropark going through the pumpkin ash swamp forest and allow access to checkout the Martindale, Patty, and Oaks Waterfalls. If hiking isn’t your thing, then bring you horse and ride through 3.5 miles of bridle trails. The kids will enjoy the nature playground and hunting for fossils. Other amenities include motorized and non-motorized boating, disc golf, a two mile paved bike trail, and several picnic sites equipped with restrooms and drinking water. In the wintertime enjoy cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice fishing.

This 220 acre wooded park was established back in 1876 and features 4.5 miles of trail to walk or bike, two lakes to fish, a creek, modular play structure with swings, sand volleyball, basketball court, Flanagan Sports Complex, waterpark, and shelters available for rent.
Monita Field Bike & Skate Park
5045 Fishburg Rd. In Huber Heights
This park provides BMX riders and skateboarders with state-of-the-art tracks for both types of sports. Features include a Velosolutions asphalt pump track, a BMX practice track, and an American Ramp Company skate park.
Greenville City Park

Large park featuring a skate park, shuffleboard court, swimming pool, playground and swings, ponds, fishing, disc golf, walking and biking trails, and a peacock observatory.
West Milton Municipal Park

Situated along the Stillwater River, this park features a playground, fishing pond, boat ramp, ballfields, 9 hole disc golf, and canoe rentals.

A wildlife rehabilitation center that is full of discovery. Go outside and walk over six miles of nature trails that lead through wetlands, prairies, and woods (no pets please). While out walking, check out the Iddings Log House, built in 1804. Stay inside and check out their seasonal art display and bird watch from the temperature controlled tree top bird vista. Throughout the year, many events are offered such as summer camps, arts and craft shows, a 5K run, and room rentals for birthday parties.
Alice Bish Park & Discovery Center

Known to the locals as “Mini Niagara” because its rock strata is the same as Niagara Falls and originates from small underground springs; Charleston Falls features a 37 foot waterfall with observation deck on 216 acres of preserve. Amenities include a wildlife pond with viewing deck, prairie with viewing deck, limestone cave, Dr. Paul and Tanya Kroger Legacy Grove and recognition walkway, picnic areas, hands-on environmental education programs, and 3.74 miles of trail. Take the trail through Locust Grove, past Cedar Pond, around Redbud Valley to the Thorny Badlands, or through Redbud Valley straight to Cave Falls, and circle back around through the Golden Hexagon. The possibilities are endless.
Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve > 2381 St. Rt. 343 in Yellow Springs
Features 268 acres of land protecting the dolomite and limestone gorge with some amazing views throughout the three miles of hiking trails.

Walk, run, or bike the paved trail that leads to the Tecumseh Trail and Bikeway or take a leisurely stroll on the trail that leads through the woods and check out the community gardens, pollinator field, and sustainable living displays. Canoers and kayakers can bring their own or rent a boat and test out the waters in the Greenville Creek via a paved boat launch. Don’t forget to stop by the Discovery Center to sign up for a class and learn more about sustainable living and making a positive impact on the environment. Other amenities include visitor information, covered shelters, public restrooms, maps, and drinking water.

Features a fishing pond with no license required to fish, wildlife ponds, Lost Creek, 2.2 miles of trail, archery range, picnic shelters with electricity, and an educational arboretum.
Hobart Urban Nature Preserve > 1400 Tyrone Rd in Troy
Features 3 acres of wildlife ponds and wetlands, 2.5 miles of walking trail, prairie, and welded art sculptures to signify the relationship between nature and art.
Honey Creek Preserve > 4536 OH-202 in Tipp City
Features 200 acres of woodlands, prairie, wetlands, and vernal pools. There is a one mile walking trail and a four mile bridle trail for horseback riding.
Lost Creek Reserve & Knoop agricultural Center > 2385 OH-41 in Troy
Features over 5.75 miles of trail with a walnut grove, Lost Creek, an oak savanna, five historic barns, heritage hall, a working farm, and the future agricultural heritage center.
