ADJUSTING TO YOUR NEW

HOMETOWN

SOON IT WILL BE “HOME”

NOTHING STAYS THE SAME. GROWTH REQUIRES CHANGE. WHEN WE STRETCH, WE GROW. STRETCHING CAN BE HARD.

Such a collection of bon mots ought to be nestled in a basket of fortune cookies. But if you’re reading this, then odds are you know all about these truths, because you’re up to your neck in change with the move to your new home. First, let us say, welcome! We’re glad you’re here.

And while change can be exciting, where you traveled from still lives large in your mind. Which is natural because that’s where all your known automatic maps are stored: who your hairstylist was, your favorite place for a cup of coffee, the quickest route to the dentist, and even the layout of your former grocery store. But out here in the Hill Country? Not so much. As with any new place, you’re starting from the ground up. So, to help

with the transition, we’re offering a few Texas-friendly tips for turning your new zip code into your new hometown.

CREATE A SUPPORT NETWORK BEFORE YOU NEED ONE. As the expression goes, when’s the best time to plant a tree? Thirty years ago. When’s the next best time? Today. While you’ve moved away from old friends and haunts, the good news is you’ve built a life up from scratch at least once before. And probably multiple times in your past. You know what works and doesn’t work for you. So take advantage of that knowledge by nosing around and explore what’s out here with an eye for what gives you joy. And while it would be nice if a neighbor comes over and introduces themself to you, be the brave one by taking the first step. Break the ice by saying hello and making your introductions. The more generous you are, the odds are greatly improved that others will be generous back, especially with tips on locations and services that they enjoy around here.

FIND YOUR COMMUNITY HAPPY PLACE. Humans tend to need three spheres in order to feel whole. A home place, a workplace, and a community place. We’re wired for connection, and if we get those needs met, then we’re building the foundation for greater contentment. There are no happy hermits. In trying something new, keep in mind that great ways to meet others are through religious centers, gyms, and community service clubs, such as the local Rotary Club, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club,

and Women’s Club. And don’t overlook your hometown library, which may host book clubs and speakers on various local topics. You might be surprised that as you take a risk here and there, within a relatively short amount of time, these strangers may evolve into your new network of friends.

BE AWARE OF YOUR STRENGTHS AND FRAGILITIES. Be gentle with yourself. There are studies on the events that people find most stressful, and on a scale from one to 100, moving tends to land in the top 10. While humans are amazingly adaptive, we’re also not bullet-proof. It may take you a full year to feel as though your new community is really your hometown. Feeling like a stranger in a strange land for the first four seasons isn’t all that unusual. It may be just how long it takes for you to adjust to all the myriad of experiences. But after a while, you may notice an internal shift. You’ve made a few friends, you feel more oriented in your town, and all this current newness has evolved into a deeper relaxation that only comes from being home again.

In the first few months, you will be establishing new routines, getting to know the local hotspots, looking for professionals and influencers, and exploring everything your new community has to offer. With so much on your plate from this massive change in your life, it can be daunting to think about everything you need to do to get your new locale to start feeling like “home.”

Enter BeLocal, your local residents’ recommendation guide for SW Austin/Hill Country. Think of this as a heartfelt Texas “Welcome, y’all!” and introduction to your new community, which includes the area defined as southwest Austin, Buda, Kyle, Dripping Springs, Driftwood and Wimberley, collectively and in particular Dripping Springs, referred to as the “Gateway to Hill Country.” One of the best things about our community is its culture, personality, and vibe. So as you can imagine for a community as large and still fast-growing as

ours, it is not possible to include every hotspot that could potentially become your personal favorite. The goal of this publication is to introduce you to some of the many local favorites and highlight the variety of opportunities and experiences that await as you begin to explore your new hometown. You can trust BeLocal because it is written for you by locals, your new neighbors, who have been living and working here for years. LOCAL TIP

“I always shop local first, and what I can’t find here, I can look outside the area. Many of our boutiques and general stores carry locally sourced products so it’s easy and a time-saver, too.” - Dee M.

recent growth of the area, still retains its small-town feel and connection to its culture and history. As you will discover during your own explorations, many of the quaint shops and local businesses are housed in structures that were built in the early 1900s and even before that. Most of the buildings that currently operate as a clothing boutique, antique shop or neighborhood brewpub at one

time served the community as livery stables, a gas station for early-century automobiles or the combination barbershop/post office.

So come take your own trip to the past if you need to find that perfect “present.” These are just a few of the many special places in Dripping Springs with their unique personality and flair to help you feel at home in your new home. You will soon realize there is much more to discover.

DAY TRIPPIN’ IN HILL COUNTRY TEXAS

Natural beauty and adventure await around every turn in the Texas Hill Country. No matter your interests, there is sure to be a place to explore. Everyone is welcome, and you are certain to meet others along your journey that make the experience even more delightful. Let’s explore some of the most interesting places that you can visit in a day or two.

Colorado Bend State Park is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts that enjoy hiking, camping, and taking beautiful pictures of nature. The park is about two hours northwest of Austin, so plan accordingly with lots of snacks and drinks. Unless you plan to pack a full picnic lunch, you will want to eat before arriving at the park. One suggestion for lunch is Cooper’s Old Time BBQ in Llano. In the park, you must certainly hike the trail to Gorman Falls, but keep in mind water levels change throughout the year. As on any wilderness hike, don’t forget the bug spray!

For those not wanting to pack bug spray, take a drive out to Luckenbach, Texas. You may recognize the name from a popular Willie Nelson song. Luckenbach has a limited selection of food, a couple of drink stations, and a dancehall! I would once again encourage you to take plenty of snacks and drinks, especially if you are taking children with you. There is a popular photo spot in front of the old Luckenbach, Texas, post office, so be sure to snap that picture! The large grassy areas are great for the kids, and there are typically some outdoor yard games set up. There is a gift shop on site as well.

Continuing west past Luckenbach, you will find numerous wineries as you approach Fredericksburg. It is a small town with a German history, but the wineries have made it extremely popular. It is best to research and map out your stops if you want to try tastings at various locations. Once in Fredericksburg, you will have plenty of options for shopping and dining.

McKinney Falls State Park

If you prefer to stay a bit closer to the Austin area, then venture to Spicewood, Texas, just west of Austin. Spicewood offers a variety of things to do from wineries and distilleries to outdoor heart-pumping adventure. Cypress Valley is a hidden beauty where you can zip line and even stay overnight in a treehouse! The property also offers some opportunities to swim and maybe even see a bison on their working ranch. The website is cypressvalley.com, so do your research before heading out. Spicewood also provides several access points to enjoy beautiful Lake Travis. We are fortunate to have this gorgeous lake so close by. If a large lake is not what you are seeking to explore, then check out Krause Springs for a naturally refreshing swim. Their website is full of details for planning your trip. Check them out at krausesprings.net

If your adventures take you south from Austin, then add Gruene and New Braunfels to your list. You will find everything from river tubing, to shopping, and even a drive-through animal safari

at Natural Bridge Caverns. A suggested dining spot is the popular Gristmill overlooking to Guadalupe River. You can expect to wait for a table during peak times, but it is worth it. You will also want to snap a picture in front of the historic Gruene Hall right next door. Check the concert schedule ahead of time, and pack your boots if you like to dance the night away.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) has numerous park options in and around the Austin area. The LCRA parks make a great destination for day trips or camping overnight. Be sure to reserve your spot online as all outdoor parks are very popular. Visit lcra.org/parks to find the right park for you!

Another option for park enthusiasts is any of our magnificent Texas State Parks. You can get more information about these Hill Country gems by visiting tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks Some of the more popular state parks are Pedernales State Park

just outside of Dripping Springs, Enchanted Rock State Park near Fredericksburg, and McKinney Falls State Park in Southeast Austin.

You can always count on the Hill Country to bring you adventure. From hiking, camping, swimming or just sightseeing, you won’t be disappointed for a day trip or weekend getaway. Enjoy the natural beauty and all the Hill Country has to offer.

Never stop exploring!
