SUMMIT COUNTY

about the COVER

The Hudson Clock Tower

In 1632, Connecticut owned a 120-mile stretch of Ohio that became known as the Connecticut Western Reserve. The land was later sold for about 40 cents an acre to investors called the Connecticut Land Company.

They sent a party of surveyors led by David Hudson, who left a contingent of the party to begin a settlement while he returned home to gather his family and possessions. David later built a home at 318 Main St., and the tiny settlement was officially named “Hudson.”

David chartered a college named Western Reserve College, which became an institution of higher learning in the region, complete with the Loomis Observatory, the only observatory west of the Alleghenies. The college became known as the “Yale of the West.” The college moved to Cleveland and became known as Western Reserve University. The local Hudson campus reopened as Western Reserve Academy.

During the Civil War, Hudson, a society with strong religious influences, was adamantly opposed to slavery, and became an active link in the Underground Railroad. Residents helped fleeing slaves on their journey to Canada and several underground tunnels below the streets still exist today. Some homes still have secret rooms and passages.

The Hudson Clock Tower was built in 1912 and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Summit County. It is 44 feet, 9 inches tall, designed in Romanesque style. At the base, the masonry included a drinking fountain for people on one side, and the other side had a low water trough for small animals and a higher trough for horses.

The original clockworks were supplied by the E. Howard Clock Company of Boston. They relied on the gravitational pull of 3,000 pounds of weights to power the clock and the Westminster chimes. As part of his job, the town Marshal had to climb the stairs to the top of the tower every few days and wind the weights up. Today the weights have been replaced with an electric motor and the fountain basins are used as flower pots.

Traditionally, dozens of events, including weekly concerts, are held in the park-like setting surrounding the tower. In addition, the First and Main area houses a blend of national chains, unique local shops and boutiques, and award-winning restaurants.

LOCAL TIP

“I remember when I moved from NYC to Twinsburg, Ohio. Although it has been 20 years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. Not only did I have to adjust to a new environment, but I needed to find all new places for services for our home and family. That was the hardest part and sometimes seemed overwhelming. I did not know anyone to ask for referrals and to help guide me. I had to start all over again. Slowly, as I met people, I was able to find referrals for service people, restaurants, vets, church, etc. I wish I would have had this resource then!”

Pierre-Louis FAMILY

Dr. Sam and Nernante Pierre-Louis are first-generation immigrants born in Haiti. Sam immigrated to Connecticut at age 8. Nernante, sensing that her future husband had left the island, immigrated to Connecticut at age 14. Although they attended the same high school, Sam doesn’t remember meeting her in high school, but Nernante has vivid memories of meeting this football player with his books in one hand and his violin in the other. They eventually met again in college at the University of Connecticut. They became best friends at first, then fell in love, and have been married for the past 22 years. They have three children, Alexi (17), Nathaniel (15), and Gabriel (11). The family moved to Hudson from sunny Southern California two years ago when Sam accepted a career opportunity with FirstEnergy Corporation.

Sam has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Systems and Engineering Management – basically, a whole lot of math and analytics. He’s currently the Vice President of Information Technology at First Energy corp. Sam also enjoys giving back to the community, especially in the area of education for

underprivileged youth. He donates his time and recruits others in support of the Akron Public School’s Academy initiative and is a board member of Summit Education Initiative, whose mission is to “improve personal and regional prosperity through increased educational attainment.” In his spare time, he likes to spend quality time with his family, watch football, and go to the shooting range.

Nernante has a BS in Family Studies and worked as a Case Manager/Social Work with the State of Georgia’s Department of Family and Children Services. Since the birth of their first child, Nernante has been a stayat-home mom taking care of her three children and volunteering at church and in her community. When she is not running around with all the kids’ activities

and managing the home, Nernante enjoys exercising, ladies’ Bible study, and hanging out with her friends.

“We are a family who loves Jesus, and our faith is very important to us,” says Nernante. The family holds membership at Christ Community Chapel (CCC). The children are involved in the programs and enjoy growing in their faith.

Alexi is a senior in high school. She played volleyball during her freshman and sophomore year. Lexi loves to sing and draw. She’s a member of the school choir, and writing and comic clubs. Alexi also enjoys going to Porch, a youth group at CCC.

Nathaniel is in 9th grade and plays tennis at Western Reserve Racquet and Fitness Club. He also plays the tuba with the school band. He plays the guitar on the worship team for Porch.

Gabriel is a 6th-grader. He plays the violin with the school orchestra and also enjoys playing tennis. He’s learning to play the guitar because he enjoys playing with his brother. Gabriel is a member of Edge, a CCC youth group.

The family enjoys vacationing together in warm places. They love hanging out on white sandy beaches, sightseeing and touring new areas. They enjoy watching Food Channel programs such as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. The family loves to laugh together. In fact, their absolute favorite thing to do is spending time laughing and telling jokes at the dinner table.

Even though Sam and Nernante were hoping to never go back to a cold state, they are thankful to be here! They chose to settle in Hudson because it reminds them of the towns in Connecticut, and they heard great things about the school system. It has proven to be a great place to live and continue to raise their family. Most of the people they’ve met are friendly and hospitable, which they find as a common trait in the Midwest.

They are trying to enjoy all that this area has to offer.

“We are a family who loves Jesus, and our faith is very important to us”

MALONE

Dereck Malone’s journey to becoming a renowned food critic with over 1 million followers across his social media platforms may seem unconventional, but it’s a testament to his authenticity, determination, and strong sense of community. Born in Germany and raised in the small town of Washington Court House, Ohio, Dereck grew up surrounded by cornfields and small-town values. His upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for hard work and staying grounded. After moving to Canton nearly a decade ago, he quickly became a valued member of the community.

From Gaming to Gastronomy

Dereck’s story begins far from the dining tables of America. For 8 ½ years, he was a professional gamer, specializing in Call of Duty. He was not only a sponsored player but also the Vice President of a gaming website company that ran high-end tournaments. His career in e-sports took off during the pandemic, and through his involvement in a children’s sports organization called 3Step Sports, Dereck found himself building the curriculum to mentor young people in the emerging world of streaming and online sports gaming from ages 3-18 all the way through to the Collegiate level. The 3Step Organization, with none other than Tom Brady on its board, sought to prepare kids for careers in both traditional and e-sports. “Gaming was my fulltime job for almost a decade,” Dereck reflects.

In 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions began to lift, Dereck found himself on a new path. He and his girlfriend began going out for weekly date nights, and during one of these outings, they encountered a server who looked exhausted and overwhelmed. “She was completely run down, red-eyed from stress,” Dereck recalls. He asked her gently, “Are you okay?” She shared that she had a newborn at home and was struggling to make rent. Touched by her situation, Dereck left a $250 tip. The server’s emotional response—tears of gratitude— left a lasting impression on him. “That was life-changing money for her,” Dereck realized. Later, the restaurant owners expressed their own struggles, telling him, “We can’t wait for you to come back. People just aren’t coming out, and we might have to close our doors.” This second plea for help struck a chord with Dereck, and it sparked an idea. What if he could do more to help restaurant owners and their employees? That’s when the concept of starting a food review vlog was born.

Staying Authentic in the Social Media Age Dereck didn’t enter the world of food criticism with any grand strategy. In fact, he didn’t even want to be on TikTok. It was a friend in the UK who created his account and convinced him to share his experiences. “He told me, ‘The world needs to see good people like you, Dereck. You’re too good at entertaining to keep it to yourself,’” Dereck recalls. With some hesitation, he downloaded the app—and quickly realized the potential it held.

The concept for his reviews was simple: bring people along for the entire experience, from walking into the restaurant to the final bite. But what set Dereck apart was his refusal to follow the typical critic’s path of harsh reviews and viral takedowns. “We turn away 60% of the restaurants that approach us,” he explains. His goal isn’t to hurt anyone with a bad review, but to lift up establishments that deserve recognition. “I’m not one of those critics that glorifies bad reviews. We do our research, we give honest feedback, but we want to help people succeed.”

This approach has won Dereck legions of followers who appreciate his honesty and kindness. His reviews are more than just about food—they’re about people, stories, and experiences. His mantra, “Waste your money in a good way,” encapsulates his desire to ensure that every dollar his audience spends on a dining experience is well worth it.

A Global Reach with Local Roots

While Dereck’s influence stretches across the world, he remains deeply connected to his home in Canton. His love for local food shines through in his recommendations of Canton-based favorites like Heritage Bistro and Burrata Italian Kitchen.

Photos provided by Dereck Malone and taken by Sobeyda Schilling | Written by staff writer, Christina Kitchen

His admiration for these establishments is evident, not only in the way he speaks about their food but also in the relationships he’s built with the people behind them. “Frank Hill, who owns Burrata, and Gina from Heritage Bistro, they’re not just great chefs—they’re great people,” he says.

But Dereck’s travels have taken him far beyond Canton. He recently embarked on a five-state food tour, visiting West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia. The grueling schedule involved driving for eight hours, doing a review, checking into a hotel, and heading out four hours later to do another review and doing that same routine for days on end. “People

don’t realize how much goes into what we do behind the scenes,” Dereck explains. The hard work, however, is worth it for the impact he’s able to have. Restaurants frequently tell him that his reviews have led to a 600% increase in sales. “We do this to see people succeed more than I ever will,” he adds humbly.

Culinary Influences, Celebrity Encounters and Balance

Dereck’s journey into the food world has introduced him to culinary legends and celebrities alike. He’s filmed content with Bar Rescue’s Brian Duffy, competitive eating champion Joey Chestnut, and various NFL pros. But despite these high-profile collaborations, Dereck’s heart

remains with the local food scene. “My favorite Ohio restaurant is 63 Corks in Strasburg. Nate Kelly, the owner, is doing amazing things there. Because of my video, 44 people from 44 different states have traveled to eat at his restaurant. One even flew in from Australia,” Dereck says, still in disbelief. “It’s my community of followers that are amazing!”

While Dereck’s personal palate leans toward Mediterranean cuisine, it’s a rare sight on his social media. “I love Mediterranean food, but I don’t film myself eating it often,” he admits.

Balancing his passion for food reviews with a commitment to his health, Dereck works out three hours a day and eats

as clean as possible in-between reviews to keep up with the demands of his job. Outside of food, his main priority is spending time with his son and family, which he treasures above all else. When he does have some free time, Dereck has developed an addiction to pickleball, often playing at Prime Pickleball, Canton’s only indoor court. Balancing family, fitness, and his love of food, Dereck finds joy in every aspect of his life.

Handling Negativity with Grace

With fame, of course, comes its fair share of challenges. Dereck has faced online harassment, including death threats. “Hurt people hurt people,” he says, refusing to take the negativity to heart. He’s even had threats made against his son, but Dereck remains grounded. “I can’t take people behind a screen seriously if I haven’t had a real conversation or connection with them,” he explains. When the threats get particularly bad, he involves legal authorities, but for the most part, he focuses on the positive impact his work has on others.

This positive mindset is what sets Dereck apart in an industry often filled with cynicism. He could easily chase big brand deals or allow networks to control his content, but he chooses not to. “We’ve had offers from major networks, but my son is my life,” Dereck says. “They wanted to pull me away from him for too long, and with that, wanted to own my content for five years. That’s not who I am.” His commitment to his family, his values, and his community is unwavering.

What’s Next for Dereck Malone?

As Dereck looks to the future, he’s excited about what’s to come. As this interview is taking place, the holiday season is approaching, and with it, a slew of pop-up bars and themed restaurants that Dereck can’t wait to review. A self-proclaimed fall enthusiast, Dereck is particularly excited for the cozy, festive atmosphere that comes with the season.

Despite his global reach, Dereck continues to keep his brand deals small and meaningful. He only works with companies he uses regularly, like Fresh Thyme and Hissho Sushi. “I’ve turned away life-changing money because I want to stay authentic,” he says. For Dereck, it’s not about chasing fame or fortune—it’s about making a positive impact and teaching his son these same core values. “Being the best Father I can be to my son will always be my top priority.”

In a world where so many influencers chase clicks at the expense of authenticity, Dereck Malone shines as a beacon of integrity, and as a community, we couldn’t be prouder to have him call Canton home. He’s not just a food critic; he’s a community builder, a devoted father, and a fierce advocate for small businesses. Whether he’s showcasing a local favorite right here in the heart of Ohio, or discovering a hidden gem across the country, Dereck’s followers know one thing for sure: he’s the real deal. His genuine passion and commitment make him a true representative of the values we hold dear in our community.

ARTS & PERFORMING

LOCAL TIP

I moved to Twinsburg 22 years ago from New York City. As an understatement, I was “shellshocked.” I missed easy access to the cultural arts that I took for granted in the big city. Then I found the prestigious Cleveland International Film Festival and this year it is completely online! clevelandfilm.org - Sobeyda S.

Cleveland’s Playhouse Square theater district is the largest performing arts center in the United States outside of New York City, with only Lincoln Center larger.

It was constructed in the 1920s and eventually closed, but as part of downtown revitalization efforts, the theater district was reopened and was touted as one of the top 10 successes in Cleveland history!

Did you know that ticks and fleas are active in temperatures as low as 32 degrees? In addition, piles of leaves, even under snow, can provide insulation from colder temperatures. Be sure to continue tick and flea treatments all year long, especially if hiking through woods or rolling in leaves or snow.

I like to walk my dogs at Hudson Springs Park, which is an 1 8 mile trail around a picturesque lake through the woods and meadow. Leashes are required. The trail is soft, stone over dirt. In the summer, there is a fountain near the boat dock that has a

fountain for the dogs. - Melissa G.

CUYAHOGA

VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

No matter the season, Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) offers beauty and provides the photographer ample opportunities for enjoyment! And … it is open every day!

EVERETT COVERED BRIDGE

LOCAL TIP

“One of my favorite hikes is the Ledges Trail at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It is a moderately difficult trail that is 2.6 miles around large rocks and limestone caves. The top of the park is an enormous flat meadow to throw balls and frisbees!

Photos: Jack R. Perry

Jack R. Perry, a local photographer, says, “One of my favorite places to go shooting, any time, is the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). There are so many places to hike offering great photo opportunities.” He continues, “[The park has] lots of exciting events year round.”

MAY SHOWERS BRING

SPRING FLOWERS!

Ohio has many wildflowers, like spring beauties, white and yellow trout lilies, red and white trilliums, bloodroot, mayapples, wild geranium, wild ginger, jack in the pulpit, columbine, milkweeds, and many, many more.

Traditionally, in the spring, CVNP offers a Spring Wildflower Walk guided by a park ranger in which the ranger teaches the basics of wildflower identification. It often begins at the Haskell Run Trailhead.

RED TRILLIUM

SUMMER EXPLORING!

In addition to expansive hiking trails, awe-inspiring ledges, and beautiful waterfalls, the CVNP park contains the only remaining covered bridge in Summit County, Ohio! In the 19th century, the Everett Covered Bridge was one of over 2,000 in Ohio. Ohio actually led the nation in covered-bridge construction at that time and boasts over 140 covered bridges that are still standing, putting us second in the nation.

“In 2006 the National Park Foundation, an organization that supports the National Park Service, included Everett Covered Bridge on its list of top ten places for photography on public lands. Everett Covered Bridge is located at 2370 Everett Rd. in Peninsula, Ohio, a half mile west of Riverview Road,” says Perry, an expert on Ohio covered bridges. Perry has documented every covered bridge in Ohio pictorially and with GPS coordinates in his book, Covered Bridges of Ohio: A Photo Guide available on Amazon.com.

“A 65-FOOT WATERFALL IS THE CENTERPIECE OF THE CVNP FALLS AREA.”

FALL

FOLIAGE

If you’re looking to capture captivating photos, autumn in Cuyahoga Valley National Park will provide endless opportunities; color abounds, and waterfalls are gushing. Perry loves this time of year, saying, “The fall foliage provides the best time to head out on a scenic tour of rural Ohio with your camera.”

“A 65-foot waterfall is the centerpiece of the CVNP falls area. Brandywine Falls is located at 8176 Brandywine Rd.,” Perry tells us. This and other falls are beautiful in every season, and he recommends visiting them in every season if possible.

An interesting summertime expedition to find cooler temperatures is to the locate the bat cave, which can be a cool oasis on the hottest dog days of summer. Perry says, “The Ice Box Cave, which is a 50-foot-deep bat cave, will have ice even in the hot summer.”

You can also take a scenic train ride through the park or hike or bike the towpath trail. Perry offers an insider tip saying, “One of my favorite events held each year is Steam in the Valley, where an old-time steam engine, the Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire No. 765 from Fort Wayne Railroad, thunders through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at full speed.”

OLD 765

LOCAL TIP

“I love going to the Cuyahoga National Valley Parks to get a fresh breath of nature and admire the beauty it has to offer in all four seasons.” – Hope B.

Hope is a Stow resident, content editor at Salem Media, and multi-published author. You can find her books at Hopebolinger.com.

WINTER

“One of my favorite hiking areas in the winter is the Ledges Area Trails, 405 Kendall Park Rd., Peninsula 44264,” Perry says. “It is an easy 2.2mile loop in the summer, but with snow, it can be difficult in places. It has lots of great sandstone rock outcroppings called the Ritchie Ledges. The loop will take you through a hemlock forest with vistas of the valley to photograph.”

CVNP even offers cross-country at Kendall Lake Area Trails. Perry instructs, “The Kendall Lake Shelter is on Truxell/Kendall Park Road, 2 miles west of AkronCleveland Road, in Peninsula 44264. The Lake Trail is a short, 1-mile hike. When the snow is 6 inches or more, the Winter Sports Center will be active and renting skies.”

Winter also provides another Perry favorite, The Polar Express train ride. It runs November and December. Be sure to reference and even download a map of Cuyahoga Valley National Park trails at www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit

Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail

The Towpath Trail follows the historic path (as much as possible) along the Ohio and Erie Canal that connects Lake Erie with the Ohio River at Portsmouth. This path along the canal was used by the mules that pulled boats filled with cargo and passengers through the canal. The canal was constructed between 1825-1835.

Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, birding, or photography, this trail provides ample opportunity for you. The beautiful scenery, wildlife, quaint towns, and historical sites along the way make this trail an enthusiast’s treasure. Experience the trail in every season to discover and appreciate it more fully.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad offers “Bike Aboard” for Towpath enthusiasts for $5 per person that allows you to ride your bike one direction and the train the other direction. The train can be flagged down at any of the boarding stations by waving both arms over your head. The train always leaves the stations on time so suggests being at a station ten minutes prior to departure time. For station locations, Towpath mileage between stations, and a convenient Train Tracker app, visit the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad website at www.cvsr.org.

The Towpath was voted “Best Bike Trail” by the readers of Ohio Magazine! You can find a smartphone-friendly Towpath Trail map including trailheads and distances at www.ohioanderiecanalway.com.

LOCAL TIP

“Our family loves riding the towpath starting in Peninsula. You can hop on the train with your bike in Peninsula and go north or south. Then you can get off the train and ride your bike back to Peninsula. Make sure you have cash on you, because they only take cash on the train.” – Brian S.
