Located in the center of downtown Spartanburg, the statue of General Daniel Morgan was erected in 1881. The statue commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens that took place on January 17th, 1781. The town square was also renamed to Morgan Square at this time.

When it comes to spending time outdoors, Spartanburg is an amazing place to live. There are many ways and opportunities to take in the beautiful weather and scenery Spartanburg has to offer. Here we will take a quick look at some local options to be active!
PADDLING
Kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding?
That is the question. The Pacolet and Tyger Rivers both have access points for kayaking or canoeing. Spartanburg has several lakes where you can kayak, canoe, or paddle, but Lake Cooley is a local favorite. Bring your own, or rent and take classes from the Outdoor Education Center at Lake Cooley. Croft State Park also has kayaks and canoes available to rent. As a Spartanburg resident, you have access to beautiful areas to paddle and enjoy the lakes and rivers of the Upstate.


SKATING
Did you know Spartanburg is home to the first public concrete skate park in South Carolina? First opened in 2009, the Hot Spot Skate Park features ramps, rails, steps, half-pipe, and more. New to the sport? Clinics and lessons are available.

HIKING
If you’re looking for a nice easy stroll/ hike, the Edwin M. Griffin Nature Preserve, home of the Cottonwood Trail, is the place to go. Located just minutes from downtown, enjoy over four miles of trails and pristine nature as you enjoy the fresh air. Looking for something tougher? Head over to Croft State Park where there are 2.5 miles of hiking-only trails through rolling hills.

CYCLING
Spartanburg has been named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. There are several options for cyclists to enjoy in Spartanburg depending on what you are looking for. The Daniel Morgan Trail System “The Dan” is a great option for urban cycling. Made up of multiple trails across Spartanburg, including the Mary Black Rail Trail, The Dan is a local favorite for cyclists. Cyclists looking for mountain biking options can head to Croft State Park and enjoy 20 miles of trails or the Vic Bailey Subaru Bike Park.

Mitchell will test riders of all levels at over 100 miles and an elevation gain of more than 10,000 feet. The Assault begins in Spartanburg and travels through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains to Mt. Mitchell State Park in North Carolina. If Mt. Mitchell seems intimidating, The Assault on Mt. Marion is a great race to participate in first. The Assault on Mt. Marion spans 74 miles and has an elevation gain of more than 2,000 feet through the Upstate and the Blue Ridge Mountains.



Mountain bike enthusiasts will feel right at home in Spartanburg. Croft State Park is a go-to destination for local mountain bikers. With over 20 miles of trails with rolling hills, creeks, changing elevations, and beautiful scenery, it is a great place to get out and explore. The Southside Loop at Croft is the longest trail and consists of flat areas, steep downhills, and technical climbs.

For those riders looking for a few thrills, the Vic Bailey Subaru Bike Park has you covered. Located along the Mary Black Rail Trail, the Bike Park has jumps, rollers, wooden-banked turns, and an elevated half-log trail. The Bike Park will get your blood and adrenaline pumping as you fly through the air!
Plans are in place to extend and connect more trails throughout Spartanburg to offer even more options for cyclists!
