They’re javelinas... ...those aren’t warthogs.

PARADISE VALLEY & OLD TOWN!

And congratulations! You’re now part of this hidden gem in the desert that people only recently seem to be discovering. I myself lived in Southern California and Colorado before moving here, and for years I believed the horror stories — “It’s 115 in the shade there!”

But after I moved here? My gosh. I love the heat!

In both California and Colorado, even in summertime, you pretty much have to carry a light jacket with you at night. Here, the days are longer — you can dine outside after 9 p.m.

Another surprise: There’s so much wildlife here! Granted, I’m not a fan of all of it. On my first night in my new home, I laid down after a long day of moving, looked over at the wall, and a gigantic tarantula had shown up to greet me. And, yes, we have scorpions, too. But also cougars and coyotes, deer and javelinas. I moved my elderly mother out here from San Diego, and one day she called me: “What do I do? There are warthogs outside my door!”

No, Mom, those aren’t warthogs. They’re javelinas, and I think they’re kind of cute.

There’s so much to discover here! And that’s where BeLocal comes in. We’ve found the best of the best and laid them out so you may enjoy them. With pretty much every establishment in this guide, you can bet they’re locally owned and run. So here’s your chance to support local businesses and find some hidden hotspots along the way.

I hope this guide gives you a chance to expand your world and live your new life here to the full. You’ll find many of your neighbors and local business owners come from elsewhere. But whether they’re Arizona natives or transplants, I think you’ll discover what I have: Arizonans are friendly people.

What better compliment can one say about a place?

So meet your neighbors. Support local. Find your new favorite haunts. And if you ever need a local guide or some local assistance? Please consider me and my staff to be your new friends in this wonderful place. Let us know if you have any questions or if there’s any way we can ever be of service.

Again, welcome to the neighborhood!

“The town of Williams, AZ, on Route 66 has incredible souvenir shops, awesome historic bars ... the Sultana Bar has the longest-held liquor license in Arizona. They have many restaurants and a cool beer garden that just opened up. Bearizona animal park, the Deer Farm, and the new mountainside rollercoaster are worth visiting, too”

EXPLORE

& DISCOVER HIDDEN GEMS IN THE AREA

Arizona is filled with natural beauty, from carved canyons to soaring mountains. But did you know that there are dozens of natural hot springs, waterfalls, ruins and other treasures hidden around the state?

HAVASU FALLS ▸ Havasu Falls is the most famous of the aqua-blue Havasupai Waterfalls that spill over deep-orange, travertine cliffs in a desert oasis of stunning beauty. The five Havasupai Falls include Navajo Falls, Fifty Foot Falls, Havasu Falls, Mooney Falls and Beaver Falls. All are located on the Havasupai Indian reservation in a side canyon of the Grand Canyon.

BAT CAVES ▸ The Maricopa County Flood Control Tunnel near 40th Street and Camelback Road serves as a roost for several thousand Mexican free-tailed bats and canyon bats. The best times for viewing are June-August when they emerge just before sunset.

VALLEY OF THE MOON, TUCSON ▸ In the 1920s, postal clerk, George Legler started this project with a vision to create an imaginary world where kindness and peace could be harbored. He bought the land and, with help of some of his friends, ‘The Valley” was constructed to have enchantingly winding paths, hidden caverns, and towers and walls made of boulders. He and his friends continued to expand the fantasy world and offered tours of the land of the moon.

“Head to Old Town Tavern every Thursday evening to listen to Chad Bailey perform. The man will sing for four hours straight without a break. Always a fun and relaxing evening!”

- Gina V.

THE WAVE, MARBLE CANYON ▸ The Wave is located in the Coyote Buttes North area, along the border of Utah within the Paria Canyon Wilderness Area/Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. It has an incredible, undulating appearance with vast sandstone structures that are stretched like taffy. It’s made up of Navajo Sandstone dunes that have calcified vertically and horizontally and eventually hardened into compacted rocks over time. To see it, you’ll have to enter a lottery to obtain a hiking permit four months in advance via the Bureau of Land Management, but it’s definitely worth the wait.

EL DORADO HOT SPRINGS ▸ If you’re looking for an easygoing afternoon, these hot springs in Tonopah have got you covered. With multiple pools, both public and private, the El Dorado Hot Springs give you a chance to soak in their warmth while enjoying a view of the desert. They also have multiple campgrounds available, which makes this a great stop if you’re traveling across the State.

GOLDFIELD GHOST TOWN ▸

Goldfield Ghost Town, “the gateway to the Superstition Mountains,” located just outside Apache Junction, was a bustling town around the turn of the century after gold was struck here in 1892. Today, this ghost town in Arizona offers the chance to explore the Old West in an authentic ghost town brought back to life. Stop into shops and historic buildings, tour a gold mine, explore a museum and even pan for gold. Goldfield also offers rides on the state’s only narrow gauge train and the chance to watch staged gunfights.

SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK, SEDONA ▸ Located in picturesque Oak Creek Canyon just seven miles north of Sedona, Slide Rock State Park is home to a smooth, natural water slide. It was formed from red sandstone, and Oak Creek passes over it, spilling into a refreshing swimming hole. It offers a fabulous retreat for cooling off on a hot summer day. Visitors can slide down the slick water chute, wade in the cool waters or soak up the sunshine along the creek.

COLOSSAL CAVE MOUNTAIN PARK, TUCSON ▸ Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a desert park that showcases Colossal Cave and La Posta Quemada Ranch, a 128-yearold working ranch. Although the cave was officially “discovered” in the late 1800s, archaeological findings have shown that it’s been used for centuries by prehistoric people. Take a tour to explore its beautiful formations like stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, boxwork and helictites. The ranch hosts a petting zoo, pony and horseback rides, and overnight camping is available too.

VERDE VALLEY ▸ The Verde Valley is a beautiful destination for outdoor adventures, history, and just relaxing and taking in the gorgeous scenery. Renowned for its mineral riches, the valley once hosted several copper mines that attracted settlers to the area. As such, you’ll find a number of museums related to its glorious past, including the Arizona Copper Art Museum in Clarkdale. One of the most popular attractions here, however, is the Verde Canyon Railroad which takes passengers to the State’s “other grand canyon.”

TORTILLA FLATS ▸ The Last Stagecoach Stop in America. Nestled in the midst of the Tonto National Forest in the Superstition Range visitors will find an old Western town established in 1904 called Tortilla Flats. The rich history of the area is the lure of this tiny town. Being there is like stepping back in time as visitors walk down the wooden boardwalk that goes through town.

FUN FACT

Best Selling Author - Clive Cussler, a New York Times best-selling adventure novelist, was a Paradise Valley resident. Cussler wrote more than 20 best-selling books. He also led expeditions in search of historic shipwrecks and lost treasures in the depths of the ocean.

PETRIFIED NATIONAL FOREST NATIONAL PARK ▸ At this fascinating National Park located east of Winslow, you can explore one of the largest and most vibrantly colored collections of petrified wood, historic structures, and archaeological sites, which sit among the striking beauty of the Painted Desert. The “trees” are fragmented, fossilized logs spread across a vast area of grassland. Many are huge — up to 6 feet in diameter — and at least one spans a ravine, forming a natural bridge. And, they’re as ancient as the first dinosaurs that roamed the earth 225 million years ago.

HOT WELL DUNES ▸ Our last recommendation of the many hot springs of Arizona is the Hot Well Dunes. These springs are surrounded by 2,000 acres of sand dunes that are an off-roader’s dream. You can settle down at one of the 10 campsites on location after you ride the dunes and go relax in the hot pools after a day of fun.

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE, PAYSON ▸ Tonto Natural Bridge is a natural arch that’s believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. It sits within a little valley surrounded by a forest of pine trees inside Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. The 183-foot-high bridge hovers over a 400-foot-long tunnel, measuring 150 feet at its widest point. A series of underground springs with mineral-laden waters in a narrow, V-shaped ravine, have built up large deposits of travertine through which the creek has eroded a passageway, leaving the rocks above it standing, serving as a natural bridge. There are four trails that descend into a canyon, allowing visitors to capture the glory of this geologic wonder.

MONTEZUMA CASTLE, CAMP VERDE ▸ Montezuma Castle is not a royal palace, but it’s at least as fascinating. Built by the Sinagua Indians in the 12th century, it boasts one of the most well-preserved cliff dwellings in the nation. Gaze through the windows of the past, peering into the 20-room high-rise apartments that were carved into towering limestone cliffs to get a look at how the tribe transformed the unforgiving desert landscape into convenient prosperity.

HORSESHOE BEND, PAGE ▸ Horseshoe Bend is considered to be one of the greatest natural wonders in the nation.

The horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River, which serves as an excellent example of a formation called an “entrenched meander,” can be reached by taking a less than three-quarters-of-a-mile hike through the scenic red rocks that overlook the river.

Scottsdale is a scenic natural playground that’s just waiting to be explored with the family. From paddle boarding to animal encounters, it seems the opportunities are limitless.

FUN FACT

The Name Paradise Valley - Three surveyors were sent to the area by the Rio Verde Canal Company in 1889. The team saw the abundance of spring wildflowers and Palo Verde trees and fell in love with the tranquility and beauty of the desert landscape so much so that they named the area Paradise Valley.

Scottsdale is also the home of BUTTERFLY WONDERLAND, which is the largest indoor butterfly pavilion in the country. Guests of all ages are transported to the rainforest by immersing them in the world of butter flies and other rainforest animals.

PANGAEA LAND OF THE DINOSAURS takes guests back in time to the era of dinosaurs with riveting educational exhibits featuring more than 50 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, interactive activities, fossil excavations, face painting, sluicing activities, balloon art and more.

The attraction combines the thrills of a prehistoric-themed entertainment concept with educational elements designed to help children and their families learn more about some of the most mysterious creatures to ever walk the Earth — dinosaurs. Complete with realistic recreations of prehistoric habitats and lifelike robotic dinosaurs that roam through exhibits, Pangaea Land of the Dinosaurs is unlike anything the Valley has ever seen.

AROUND TOWN

The PHOENIX ZOO is the only zoo in the Valley accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is a nonprofit zoological park, serving nearly 1.4 million guests annually.

Home to more than 3,000 animals, many of which are endangered or threatened species, the Zoo is also committed to supporting wildlife and habitat conservation in the region and across the globe. The wildlife recovery and research programs based at the Zoo are focused on boosting wild populations of 10 imperiled Arizona native species.

Families that want to stay close to home but have an outdoor adventure on the water visit TEMPE TOWN LAKE. On the south shore at Tempe Beach Park, visitors have the opportunity to rent all kinds of watercraft. Boats of all types can be rented here for one-hour or two-hour segments. Watercraft options available to rent include donut boats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, pontoon boats, pedal boats, and electric boats.

Valley Youth Theatre (VYT), located on the southeast corner of First Street and Fillmore in Downtown Phoenix, produces six professional-quality shows per season, including two Center Stage at the Herberger Theater Center. It has notable alumni, including Emma Stone, whose roots take her back to performing as Otter in VYT’s The Wind In The Willows in 2000 at 11 years old.

LEGOLAND DISCOVERY CENTER is the ultimate indoor LEGO playground with two rides, 10 LEGO build and play zones, a 4D cinema and much more! The space is located right next door to and SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium, and tickets can be purchased as a combination package.

The HALL OF FLAME MUSEUM OF FIREFIGHTING is one of several Phoenix attractions that can be found in Papago Park. Home to the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, the museum has almost an acre of fire history exhibits, over one hundred fully restored pieces of fire apparatus on display (dating from 1725 to 2004), a children’s area and a museum gift shop.

Now in its 33rd season, VYT has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and families through stage productions, classes, camps and community outreach programs. Participation in mainstage productions is entirely fee-free. VYT provides an opportunity for children to have a place that is dedicated to building their sense of self, developing their presentation skills, and increasing their poise and self-esteem. VYT knows that everyone that works on a show is important — whether you are on the tech crew, are running lights, are an actor, or are sweeping backstage. Everyone is important for the show to go on.

WORTH THE DRIVE

In the heart of Northern Arizona, nestled amongst the beautiful Kaibab National Forest, Williams is considered the gateway to the Grand Canyon. BEARIZONA is one hour south of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim and 30 minutes west of Flagstaff.

Bearizona is approximately 160 acres. Visitors will drive through more than three miles of Ponderosa Pine Forest viewing North American animals in their natural habitats when they visit. More animals are exhibited in Fort Bearizona, a beautiful 20-acre walk-through area, along winding paths which is more of a “zoo” typesetting.

RAWHIDE WESTERN TOWN AND EVENT CENTER is the valley’s premier destination offering groups a unique journey back in time. Encompassing over 160 acres of beautiful Sonoran Desert, Rawhide is nestled in the center of Wild Horse Pass in the Chandler area. Guests can enjoy Rawhide’s authentic western ambiance, on-site amenities and stunt shows by The Arizona Roughriders.

At PLEASANT HARBOR MARINA at Lake Pleasant, get your adrenaline pumping with their floating water slide. There are also rentals available, including jet skis, wakeboard boats or spacious pontoon boats. Take your whole group to explore Lake Pleasant.

Also at Lake Pleasant is PAQUA PARK, which is located at Scorpion Bay Marina. Included is an inflatable, on-water obstacle course that provides hours of fun! Life jackets are required, and you must be at least 7 years old to participate.

“Visit the Persian Room restaurant on Scottsdale Road. Love the food, the staff has always been friendly, and being Persian myself, I’m a tough critic when it comes to Persian food, and theirs is up there with the best, and that includes home-cooked.”

MEET A LOCAL DESIGNER

BARBARA

KAPLAN

We know that you are an expert at helping people discover how they want to design their personal environments without fear of making a mistake.

What inspired you when you were creating your personal environment?

Trusting myself to know what I do and don’t like empowered me to make choices for myself. I always say that true interior design is your “interior!” Only you know what you want to design for yourself. So, I looked

inside my heart for what would make me smile. I trusted myself to like or not like something. I wanted that gut reaction to say, “I can’t live without this!” Also, I always wait 24 hours to finalize any decisions. I sleep on it! If I still feel the same the next day, I am sure it is real. With this philosophy, I developed the Color and Design Personal Profile and created the Bajaro Method: Rooms Have No Feels, YOU Do!

WHAT WE SEE TRIGGERS OUR FEELINGS. SO, I AM ALWAYS CAREFUL TO SURROUND MYSELF WITH WHAT I LOVE. WHEN I DECORATE, I ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT ROOMS HAVE NO FEELINGS; I DO!

What are some of your favorite things about the neighborhood you live in?

I love coming home to my neighborhood. I appreciate the well-maintained landscape and architecture of my neighbors’ homes. I appreciate the intrinsic beauty, serenity and amenities that give me a sense of peace and belonging. I love knowing I can drive almost anywhere in 20 minutes, yet feel like I am living in paradise! Holistically, I truly feel connected to what I need for my lifestyle.

What do you need to feel happy when you walk in the door? As I enter my home, I am grateful to be in an environment that speaks of my individual style and taste. I feel important and pleased with everything I see. This, of course, makes me feel comfortable and calm. I enjoy seeing the pieces of furni ture and accessories I have carefully chosen. Coming home at the end of the day is where I can feel nurtured, replenish my energy, and heal from the day.

What makes you happy/comfortable at home?

Everything in my home has meaning, or it wouldn’t be there. I especially love my plants and enjoy cultivating them.

Secondly, lighting design is critical. I prefer soft lighting, accent lighting, and lots of dimmers and timers that support me in the evening. I understand the importance of liking what I see and accepting how each item makes me feel. What we see triggers our feelings. So, I am always careful to surround myself with what I love. When I decorate, I always remember that rooms have no feelings; I do!

What colors/patterns do you like to live with?

LOCAL TIP

“Stand-up paddleboarding at Canyon Lake.” – Leila M.

I am known as the Hip Historian who relocated to Arizona over 22 years ago. By training, as a librarian, and for about a decade working in both New York City and then here in Arizona, decided I felt a larger calling. So I took a leap of faith and just jumped feet first into sharing my passion for how I fell in love with Arizona, specializing in finding and sharing the most interesting bits and curiosities from our past: the semi-forgotten people, places and events that have made us who we are today.

One of my favorite activities in Paradise Valley is to visit the Bat Cave, which is an amazing place. It’s a storm drain built to control flood water, and then the bats moved in. Thousands and thousands of bats take temporary refuge from May through October. Go at dusk to watch the bats fly out in mass. A beautiful sight that attracts people to watch, and it is always a good conversation.

When you are at the bat caves, you are steps away from Chelsea’s Kitchen, an American bistro restaurant, which is located on what was originally an old sound stage, movie and TV set, Cudia City, on the northeast corner of Camelback Road and 40th Street. It was created by Salvatore Cudia, a Renaissance man who created an environment that included a restaurant, theater and a touch of Hollywood magic. There were a variety of TV shows and a handful of movies filmed there.

Also in the area, I recommend visiting the Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. It is a relatively new museum, stocked with period and contemporary art and artifacts that showcase history in a unique and enjoyable way. It’s a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum and has won the title of America’s “Best Western Museum.”

Another must-see is the Soleri Bridge and Plaza on the Scottsdale Waterfront. It was created by architect, philosopher and renowned artist Paolo Soleri. Check out additional structures designed by him nearby Cosanti and the road trip-worthy Arcosanti. Paolo’s bridge functions as a walkway for pedestrians but also a solar calendar. It rests at a true north axis, and its intention is to mark solar events created by the sun’s shadow, similar to Phoenix’s Burton Bar Library. The plaza and the bridge serve as a gathering place to celebrate equinox events and is a spot included during the Canal Convergence events, which incorporate artists from all over the globe where YOU, the guests, participate in the interactive experience with light, technology, sound and the unexpected.

It is my purpose to share the history and my passion with others. I started conducting haunted history tours in downtown Phoenix, choosing the area because of the architecture, history and stories. Nearby is the Pioneer cemetery, where the last person was buried there in 1914. Most people don’t even know that it is there, and

raising awareness of it is a goal of mine. On our bus tour, we go through downtown to talk about the history of the buildings and things that happen in them, and then we end up at the cemetery. During the tour, we talk about the famous Arizona legend that keeps getting told and retold. So many people know about the Lost Dutchman and the lost gold, but most don’t know much about him. To learn more about the tours, to participate in my weekly virtual Arizona History Happy Hour, or other events, check out hiphistorian.com.

Bartlett Lake

2,815 ACRES OF FUN!

Bartlett Lake is proof that not all deserts are dry. It’s highly recommended as a place to get out of the city and get wet.

Bartlett Lake Marina has a boatable surface area of 2,815 acres – more than Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake combined. Fed by the pristine waters of the Verde River, Indians of this valley spoke descriptively in their legends of the river’s “sweet waters.”

Arizona’s natural desert terrain. While in this part of the Tonto National Forest, visitors may see mule deer, bald eagles, javelina, coyotes, and many indigenous desert plants, including the majestic saguaro, mesquite trees, and blooming ocotillo. Bartlett Lake is only 48 miles from downtown Phoenix and 17 miles northeast of Carefree.

The nearby restaurant offers excellent food…with a view.

JEROME ▸ Jerome is a ghost town that is still alive and well. From wickedly wild to wildly artistic. Located high atop Cleopatra Hill between Sedona and Prescott, this historic copper and gold mining town was founded in 1876. When gold was discovered in Jerome, miners, gamblers and bad boys of the Old West flocked here. Saloons and bawdy houses were the entertainment after a hard day’s work. At one time, Jerome was the fourth largest town in the Arizona Territory with a rowdy population that reached over 15,000.

EDITOR’S TIP ▸ To get the full experience in Jerome, AZ, is to be sure to visit the Jerome Hotel and its onsite Asylum Restaurant. Rumor has it that this once hospital is haunted. There have been some TV shows on the “spirit” nature of the hotel.

SEDONA ▸ Sedona is an Arizona desert town near Flagstaff that’s surrounded by red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. It has a mild climate and vibrant arts community. Uptown Sedona is dense with New Age shops, spas and art galleries. On the town’s outskirts, numerous trailheads access Red Rock State Park, which offers bird-watching, hiking and picnicking spots.

EDITOR’S TIP ▸ For a full luxe experience, stay at the five-star Enchantment Resort. With its Southwestern motif, each casita draws inspiration from Sedona’s iconic landscapes. All rooms feature a private deck or patio overlooking the grandeur of the canyon.
