THINGS 10
NEED TO DO! YOU

SO YOU JUST MOVED INTO YOUR NEW HOME... NOW WHAT?
ANNOUNCE YOUR NEW ADDRESS. Sharing your exciting news with friends and family is a must, especially for first-time homebuyers. Additionally, be sure to update your address with all creditors and any companies that send you mail. Don’t forget to submit a change of address form to the post office to ensure all your mail is forwarded to your new home.
1 2 3 4
SCHEDULE A PROFESSIONAL DEEP CLEAN. Even if a home appears clean, it’s best to hire a professional cleaning service for a thorough deep cleaning before moving in your belongings. It’s more convenient and cost-effective to do this before you start unpacking.
5
CHANGE THE LOCKS AND REPROGRAM THE GARAGE DOORS. For your security, replace the locks unless you’re moving into a brandnew home. You never know who might have a key. Reprogram your garage doors as well to ensure only your remotes work. It’s possible an extra remote could be floating around.
SET UP UTILITIES, CABLE, AND INTERNET. Arrange for your cable and internet services to be transferred to your new address. Consider cutting the cord with the help of FreeTVee (www.freetvee. com) to reduce cable costs and switch to streaming services. Additionally, contact local water, electric, and gas companies to have services activated or transferred to your name.
INSTALL YOUR HOME SECURITY SYSTEM. Most homes come with a security system, but it won’t be active when you move in. Contact a home security company to set up your system for peace of mind.
PERSONALIZE YOUR HOME. Transform your new house into a home that reflects your personality. Whether it’s a bright, white kitchen, slate showers, or a custom barn door, make it your own. Consult our trusted partners in BeLocal South Metro Denver for your remodeling needs. 9 8 7 6
MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS. Take the time to introduce yourself to your neighbors. They can provide valuable insights into the neighborhood, recommend local services, and become new friends. Plus, they can keep an eye on your home when you’re away.
ADD WINDOW TREATMENTS. Your new home likely doesn’t have window treatments. For privacy and style, consult an interior designer or a blinds company to help you cover your windows. Consult our trusted partners in BeLocal South Metro Denver for your remodeling needs.
LEARN HOW THE COLORADO CLIMATE AFFECTS YOUR YARD. If you’re new to Colorado, it’s essential to understand how the altitude and climate can impact your landscaping. Learn about sprinkler blowouts in the fall and which plants thrive locally. Utilize resources to make the most of the Colorado sun and soil.
10
EMBRACE THE “COLORADO” LIFESTYLE.
The beauty of Colorado offers endless opportunities for enjoyment. Whether it’s skiing, fishing, live entertainment, or visiting local parks, there’s something for everyone! We strongly encourage you to step outside and experience Colorado’s wonderful weather, outdoor activities, and stunning scenery, particularly in South Metro Denver

A JOURNEY THROUGHTIME
THE RICH HISTORY OF SOUTH METRO DENVER
FROM INDIGENOUS HERITAGE TO MODERN INNOVATION, UNCOVER THE STORIES THAT SHAPED THIS VIBRANT REGION
Nestled in Colorado’s picturesque landscapes, South Metro Denver is rich in history, showcasing stories of resilience and growth. From indigenous tribes like the Arapaho and Cheyenne to European settlers drawn by the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, the region has evolved into a vibrant suburban hub.
Exploring the Indigenous Legacy
Long before the arrival of European settlers, the plains of South Metro Denver were inhabited by indigenous peoples, notably the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes. These nomadic tribes traversed the land, hunting buffalo and living in harmony with nature. Their presence left an indelible mark on the region’s landscape and culture, a legacy that endures to this day.
The Era of Exploration and Settlement
Spanish and French explorers ventured into Colorado in the 18th century, laying the groundwork for future exploration and mapping of the region. However, it was the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1858-59 that truly transformed the area, attracting a significant influx of settlers. This gold rush spurred rapid development and led to the establishment of various towns in South Metro Denver, including Littleton, Englewood, Centennial, and Parker. Over time, these towns became centers of opportunity and growth, attracting people looking for prosperity and new beginnings in the American West.

Mining Booms and Busts
Gold discoveries fueled rapid growth, attracting fortune seekers and entrepreneurs. However, as the mining industry declined, agriculture and ranching became the region’s primary economic drivers.
Agriculture and Ranching
With fertile plains ideal for farming and cattle ranches thriving, families cultivated crops and livestock, building a sustainable agrarian economy.

Diversification and Innovation
Today, South Metro Denver is known for it’s blend of business hubs in technology, healthcare, aerospace, affluent residential areas, and high quality of life. The area is also well-regarded for its highly-rated schools, including those in the Cherry Creek School District, making it a popular choice for families. Outdoor recreation is abundant with parks, trails, and facilities such as Cherry Creek State Park offering various activities. Cultural and community events thrive and boast a vibrant arts scene. The convenient location, with easy access to major highways and public transportation, enhances connectivity within the Denver metropolitan area. Additionally, the region offers diverse shopping, dining, and entertainment options, exemplified by the Park Meadows Mall. Overall, South Metro Denver is recognized for its safe neighborhoods, excellent amenities, and a balanced urban-suburban lifestyle.
Conclusion
As we reflect on the rich tapestry of South Metro Denver’s history, we are reminded of the pioneers who forged a path through the wilderness, the miners who sought their fortunes in the earth, and the farmers who nurtured the land with care. Their legacy lives on in the vibrant communities and thriving industries that define the region today. LOVING LIFE IN SOUTH METRO DENVER!
Photos by Goodman Photography LLC
Written by Elizabeth McCabe
Coley Ortega, a local hairstylist, and her husband James Rysvkowski, along with their two boys, Marley (13) and Apollo (6), are an adventurous family rooted in the heart of South Metro Denver. From their happy household to their involvement in the community, the Rysvkowskis embody the vibrant spirit of their beloved area.
“James and I have been together for 10 years,” smiles Coley. These two Colorado natives married at the Evergreen Lake House, beginning their new life together.
A Little About the Family
Coley is an established hairstylist in the Centennial area. She loves uplifting women and their confidence through their hair and giving them a chance to take care of themselves. She attended Arapahoe High School, a tradition her son Marley will continue. James grew up in Denver and works as a maintenance manager in Parker. Their boys are avid soccer players, participating in Littleton Soccer and engaging in various outdoor activities.
“We have a mini-farm on our property,” shares Coley.

It’s home sweet home complete with three ducks, eight chickens, two dogs, and a garden. They maximize their quarter acre of land with a chicken coop, a garden, a playset, and a trampoline, creating a little oasis where they grow jack-o’-lantern pumpkins in the fall and enjoy bonfires.
Hidden Gems
Coley and her family have deep roots in South Metro Denver.
“I feel like it’s such a great family environment,” she says. “I love Centennial Park, which has a splash pad.” She also appreciates the sense of community.
“You don’t get that everywhere,” she candidly comments.
You can find them enjoying the outdoors. “We play outside a lot,” she comments. Expect to find them hiking, frequenting the trails at Cottonwood Canyon, which she finds amazing. “There is a cave hike that the kids love, which is less than a mile. You gain elevation while hiking through the caves.” It’s also a great place to spot local wildlife. “We’ve seen turkeys, rattlesnakes, all the creatures,” she says.

“We also like to go to the High Line Canal, which is so pretty,” she adds. All the hidden trails make it adventurous for this family of four. Their weekends are filled with activities like paddleboarding and visits to the Renaissance Festival. Off-roading is another family favorite, with James and Marley enjoying jeep and motorcycle rides to places like Blackhawk and Big Dry Creek Trail, where they often spot elk, deer, and frogs.
Music, Meals, and More
“The whole family likes Country music,” adds Coley. Recently, their 6-year-old attended his first Country concert and really liked it. They like going to Fiddler’s Green to hear live music.

They also enjoy local eateries, with Venalonzo’s Tacos in Centennial being a new favorite for its delicious street tacos. As for date night, Coley has a soft spot for The Melting Pot, especially for their chocolate martinis and desserts.

The Rysvkowskis are known for their adventurous lifestyle. Coley and Marley recently completed a six-mile fun run and a Spartan race, which they loved.
Connections + Community
Coley emphasizes the importance of community and staying connected through local mom pages on Facebook, such as “Moms of Parker.” These groups are invaluable for sharing information about local events, activities, and recommendations, fostering a supportive network among parents.
“They help you know about events that are happening,” says Coley.
A Wonderful Life
The Rysvkowskis are enjoying life to the fullest in South Metro Denver. Their lives are filled with joy, growth, and the promise of many more exciting chapters to come. If you see them out and about, be sure to say hello. They are looking to meet more friendly folks here in the local area (and that means you!).
