The city features an assortment of recreational, entertainment and dining options, from the five-mile Nickel Plate Trail, to the unique dining and retail at Fishers District and in the Nickel Plate Cultural District, to diverse public parks including a waterfront park, urban farm, and state-of-the-art makerspace. FORTVILLE

In 1849, Cephas Fort surveyed the original plat of Fortville on his property, envisioning the advent of the railroad in the region. True to his anticipation, the “Bee Line” Railroad (later the New York Central) passed through in 1852, prompting the naming of the railroad station Fortville in his honor. The town center shifted somewhat from its original site to accommodate this development. Fortville was formally incorporated in 1865, with a population of 240 residents.

After a major renovation to Main Street that widened sidewalks and added parking, Fortville has no plans to slow the enhancement of the historic downtown district. When exploring Fortville, you can't go too far without running into live music, great food and drinks, friendly faces, and adorable shops! With a healthy dose of festivals and street fairs, there's always something new to discover in Fortville!

MCCORDSVILLE

McCordsville’s history is rich with McCord family roots tracing back to William McCord’s acquisition of 160 acres in 1833. The town got its name from Elias Hollingsworth McCord, a respected figure known for his generosity. McCord families, hailing from Clermont County, Ohio, played key roles in shaping the community. Notable McCords like Smith McCord, a Justice of the Peace, and Indiana McCord, a skilled seamstress, contributed to the town’s development. Green McCord, a Civil War veteran, and Susan Noakes McCord, a renowned quilt maker, added to McCordsville’s legacy. Elias H. McCord’s sawmill and later gristmill were integral to the town’s growth. Today, McCordsville stands as a testament to the vibrant history woven by the McCord families.

McCordsville has big plans for future development in the new downtown district including the creation of a new McCordsville Town Hall and a Civic Commons outdoor amphitheater with connectivity throughout downtown and to existing neighborhoods. Stay tuned for many more exciting advancements coming in 2024 and 2025!

NOBLESVILLE

Noblesville, established in 1818 after land acquisition from Native Americans, now hosts over 75,000 residents. Its downtown, shaped by William Conner and Josiah Polk in 1823, became the county seat a year later. Conner’s former home, now part of Conner Prairie in Fishers, adds to the city’s historic allure. Notably, the Noblesville Milling Company’s support led to the high school sports team adopting the moniker “Millers”.

Presently, Noblesville is bustling with projects aimed at enhancing various aspects of city life. The Reimagine Pleasant Street project, in collaboration with Hamilton County, aims to improve connectivity and accessibility while preserving the area’s urban and historic charm. Innovation Mile, spanning 600 acres along Interstate 69, is poised to become a hub for work, living, and recreation, fostering sustainable economic growth. Future developments include the Indiana Joint Replacement Institute and the Noblesville Event Center, set to be the new home to the Indiana Pacers G League franchise. Exciting times lie ahead for this vibrant city! More details are available at www.InnovationMile.com.

UNDERSTANDING THE PORK TENDERLOIN SANDWICH

In the culinary landscape of Indiana, the comically oversized pork tenderloin sandwich reigns supreme, deeply entrenched in local culture. Its origins trace back to Nick’s Kitchen in Huntington, IN, where Nick Freienstein, the son of German immigrants, initially sold hamburgers from a push cart at night. The overwhelming popularity of his burgers led him to establish Nick’s Kitchen in 1908, a thriving business that continues to flourish.

Hoosiers have a distinct preference for their tenderloin sandwiches, whether freshly breaded or grilled. Explore the cherished tradition at these local favorites:

TWO SISTERS TURN PASSION FOR COMMUNITY INTO ‘THE SCUTTLEBUTT CLUB PODCAST’

Growing up in Lafayette but visiting Indianapolis every other weekend, two sisters developed a deep familiarity with the city. After graduating high school, they both attended Indiana University and eventually settled in Fishers, a suburb they chose for its family-friendly environment and convenient location. Now, fifteen years later, they are the enthusiastic hosts of “The Scuttlebutt Club Podcast.” With backgrounds in sports communication and graphic design, the sisters decided to start a podcast to explore and share the vibrant community they love. Their show is a blend of personal catch-ups, local event highlights, and interviews with community members, designed to help listeners plan their weekends and discover new experiences. Their goal is to encourage residents to engage with their surroundings, whether they’re

looking for activities with their kids or for adults-only outings— there’s something for everyone!

Scuttlebutt- where you could access fresh water on a ship and everyone would gather to tell of their voyages. Then in office settings, the term was also applied to the gossip and news employees shared around the water cooler. Now, it’s our podcast, The Scuttlebutt Club, where we catch you up weekly on all the local buzz and much more in hopes to get you out experiencing the community. So grab your water and stay hydrated. Let’s go! Welcome to the Club!

MEET THE

PECK FAMILY

THE FAMILY HAS BUILT SO MANY MEMORIES IN NOBLESVILLE AND THE TOWN IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO THEM.

Blue Balloon Photography

Mitch Peck has lived in Noblesville his entire life! Megan moved to be with Mitch in 1999. They are blessed with three beautiful children: Nolan (10), Rowan (8) and Aidan (6). The family loves the small community aspect of Noblesville. Having lived in New York and Chicago, Megan appreciates the warmth from the people around her. Being able to walk into a local restaurant or store and know half of the people they encounter is something the family adores.

For date nights, Mitch and Megan enjoy The Nesst or Matteo’s (for fancy dinners or outings). During any given weekend, you can

also find them at Grindstone Public House or Primeval Brewing. Every once in a while, they enjoy Syd’s Fine Food and Spirits, a restaurant and bar on the square that is a fun and local hot spot. Because it is such a part of Noblesville history, many residents enjoy going there and catching up with friends. An annual event the Pecks enjoy attending is Small Business Saturday. This day is meant for residents of their town to shop at small local businesses in the area while allowing an opportunity for the community to support one another. This is Megan’s favorite time to take the kids to downtown Noblesville! Another activity the kids enjoy is the Duck Race in the summer. You can buy a duck for $5, and then they are all dropped off of the bridge on Main Street. There is a prize for the first duck to cross the finish line! Even if you don’t win, it always makes for a great day with the kids!

Anywhere on the square makes the family feel at home. The square and the clock tower are such a central part of Noblesville. Megan and Mitch got married on the steps in front of the courthouse and had cocktails at Matteo’s right before the ceremony started. Megan’s father walked her across the street to the steps in front of the courthouse before she was married. The family has built so many memories in Noblesville, and the town is incredibly important to them.

Their oldest son, Nolan, inspired their idea to create a location for a nonprofit called Gigi’s Playhouse, which is located in the Castleton area. Gigi’s is a Down Syndrome Achievement Center that provides programs and classes for individuals at no cost. Megan herself is the founding president. With all of the enjoyment and excitement of starting the nonprofit, Megan decided to also create her own company called Mini Minds. This company is located in Carmel and the Geist area and functions as a multi-disciplinary practice. Mini Minds offers mental health, art, speech and occupational therapy. There are also classes for the community that include music and yoga. Their goal is to help families and children to be the best they can be. Their goal is to help the families around them and give back anytime they can.

FAMILY FUN! INDY

Hi! I'm Brittany Lang, and my daughter Olivia and I are all about adventures!

After finishing college, I moved to Las Vegas and dove headfirst into a lifestyle filled with outdoor fun. From hiking and rock climbing to savoring all sorts of delicious cuisines, I was living the dream. But when I became a mom to Olivia, I knew I wanted to be closer to family and give her a more family-focused upbringing. So, in July 2021, we packed up and moved to Indiana, and it's been an incredible decision that we've loved every minute of since!

My roots lie approximately 30 minutes north of Indianapolis. Over the years, my extended family has gravitated towards areas like Fishers, Carmel, and Zionsville, fostering a sense of closeness that we greatly appreciate.

Our involvement in the community is extensive. Constantly exploring new locales and partaking in various activities, from flower-picking at local farms to navigating muddy terrain at Badlands Off Road Park, keeps us engaged. Both Olivia and I practice ju-jitsu locally, and we actively participate in the Fortville Christian Church community. Additionally, I dedicate time to volunteering for S.O.C.S. (So Others Can Survive), providing essentials directly to homeless camps in downtown Indianapolis.

Olivia, at six years old, exudes a zest for exploration and activity. Currently excelling as a 4-stripe white belt in BJJ, she eagerly anticipates her next belt test. With a penchant for cheeseburgers and a love for climbing, whether at the playground or a climbing gym, she's always on the move.

Personally, I find solace in savoring red wine at establishments like Daniel's Vineyard or Urban Vines, though Peace Water Winery has recently caught my attention. Delighting in boutique shopping, downtown destinations in Noblesville, Fortville, Carmel, and Zionsville hold a special allure. For home decor, Allisonville Home & Garden in Fishers, and the Apple Butter Barn in Pendleton top my list. And for clothing, Beauty + Grace in Carmel, PJs Pink Boutique in Fortville, and Vintage Charm in Zionsville are favorites.

Our leisure activities often involve trampoline parks like Urban Air and Adrenaline, as well as climbing facilities such as Climb Time and Hoosier

Our go-to dining spot in Indy is The LOFT at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, renowned for its farm-to-table ethos. Attending Sunday school and worship services at Fortville Christian Church, I recently completed the Rooted study and subsequently led another group through it. Despite its small size, the church exudes warmth and inclusivity, fostering a sense of belonging.

Driven by a passion for exploration and a desire to inspire other families, I launched @indy.family.fun on Instagram, where I share our adventures and encourage families to embrace the abundance of experiences Indy has to offer.

While Indiana may lack topographical diversity, it certainly doesn't lack excitement. Whether it's outdoor adventures, artistic pursuits, family-friendly activities, shopping, or nightlife, Indy caters to all tastes, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy.

WELCOME TO THE HOOSIER STATE, NEW NEIGHBORS! NOW, LET’S CHAT ABOUT SOMETHING THAT MIGHT GIVE YOU A FEW SPINS –ROUNDABOUTS! THESE CIRCULAR TRAFFIC WONDERS ARE BECOMING MORE COMMON IN INDIANA, AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT FEELING LIKE YOU’RE STUCK IN A LOOP.

HOW TO NAVIGATE INDIANA’S A SPIRITED GUIDE FOR NEWCOMERS!

So, what’s a roundabout, you ask? Well, it’s like a dance floor for cars – a circular intersection where traffic swirls around a central island. Forget the old-school rotaries; these modern marvels are designed to keep things smooth, safe, and stylish.

Picture this: you approach a roundabout. First move – slow down and stay in your lane. Keep your eyes peeled, and when it’s your turn, yield to the vehicles already gracefully circling. Think of it as an automotive ballet. Oh, and don’t forget to follow the one-way signs and show some love to pedestrians and cyclists at crosswalks.

Now, here comes the tricky part – entering. Wait for your moment, let the roundabout traffic take the lead (they have the right-of-way), and then smoothly merge to the right. No abrupt moves, just a seamless dance through the lanes.

Once you’re in, keep the rhythm going. Cruise through the roundabout until you reach your exit point. Avoid any impromptu stops – these circles are all about the flow.

As you prepare to exit, be courteous and signal your intentions. Right turns are easy – just signal and exit to the right. Left turns? Well, you circle around the central island and then gracefully make your right turn to exit. It’s like performing a vehicular pirouette!

And guess what? Roundabouts aren’t just for your everyday sedans. They’re versatile – emergency vehicles, large trucks, they

all know the steps. If you see flashing lights, just move as far right as you can and let them take center stage.

ROUNDABOUT REVELRY

Now, let’s talk about Carmel – the city that’s turning intersections into roundabout masterpieces. With a whopping 142 of them and counting, Carmel is on a traffic circle spree. The former Mayor, James Brainard, was the maestro, conducting a symphony of safer roads and greener living.

Jump into your car and you’ll see the magic. Roundabouts keep traffic flowing, making intersections more efficient than a welltimed magic trick. By 2025, Carmel plans to have just one stoplight, paving the way for narrower roads and happier pedestrians.

But that’s not all. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that Carmel’s switch to roundabouts has cut injury crashes by almost half. Busy intersections? An 84% drop! That’s the kind of encore we all want.

And let’s not forget the environment. Carmel’s roundabouts save the equivalent of 5,000 cars’ worth of CO2 emissions, all while putting an extra $14 million back into drivers’ pockets. Now, that’s a green revolution we can get behind!

So, buckle up, newbies! You’re in for a ride through the circular wonders of Indiana’s roundabouts. Enjoy the dance, follow the steps, and soon enough, you’ll be spinning through them like a seasoned pro! LOCAL

CONNECTING

ATTENTION ACTIVE MILITARY AND VETERANS! OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES WANT THOSE WHO SERVE OUR COUNTRY TO FEEL RIGHT AT HOME HERE IN CENTRAL INDIANA. WITH A THRIVING JOB MARKET AND LOW COST OF LIVING, INDIANA IS AN IDEAL PLACE TO PUT DOWN ROOTS.

IN VETS ▸ invets.org

Founded by veterans for veterans, aids in transitioning to civilian life, focusing on job placement, and finding the right community for veterans and their families to ensure their success and happiness. They help find access to multiple benefits available to veterans and their families; relocation assistance, tax deductions, tuition assistance for children of veterans, and other resources to ensure the transition to Indiana is a smooth one.

FISHERS ARMED SERVICES COMMISSION (FASC) fishersin.gov/boards-commissions/ fishers-armed-services-commission

The purpose of the commission is to further the city becoming a community in which military service is honored and recognized as a key component to the community’s vibrancy; incorporated and promoted in programming, policy decisions, and protocols to ensure recognition and appreciation towards military service is woven throughout the community and understood as a critical component to our sense of place.

TO HELPFUL RESOURCES

STRONGER VETERANS, STRONGER COMMUNITIES

Text "SVSC" to 79848 SVSC plays a crucial role in preventing suicide among service members, veterans or their caregivers. By connecting veterans with necessary resources at local, state, and federal levels, they aim to reduce the challenges veterans face throughout their life. A major focus is on reducing veteran suicide by ensuring veterans find purpose and value in their lives after service. One key aspect of this initiative is raising awareness of financial support opportunities, which often go unnoticed by many veterans. Alleviating financial stress can sig nificantly improve mental health and reduce the risk of crises. The collabo rative approach—combining resources from various levels of government and local agencies—ensures that veterans receive comprehensive support, from mental health services to financial assistance.

VETERANS SERVICE OFFICER 317-776-9610 ▸ tom.logan@hamiltoncounty.in.gov
