My love for photography began as a teen looking through my Seventeen, Vogue and fashion magazines. I always imagined being on the set and wearing fabulous clothes. After my husband passed decades later. Nature became my peace, comfort and inspiration. Beauty is everywhere and where you least expect it. Nature has a way of gifting you everyday. Admiring natures’ beauty began my spiritual journey. I needed to see every sunset,

TOWNS
OF
Lower Route 128 Lower Route 128
The Lower 128 is home to delightful towns that are rich with history.

WELLESLEY First settled in the 1630s after negotiations with Indian chiefs, Wellesley was first part of the town of Dedham. Seventy-five years later, a section of Dedham split off and was named Needham. The western part of Needham eventually became Wellesley, founded in 1881. Before that happened, the area was a small, quiet farming town. After its founding, the town was carefully planned, developed, and nurtured into the thriving community that it is today. In 1875, Wellesley College was founded, a college for women that has become one of the most prestigious schools in the country

Enjoy history and visit Quincy Square’s National Parks Office, where you can take a trolley tour of Adams National Historical Park, home of Presidents John and John Quincy Adams. – Mary K.

DOVER Dover was first settled around 1635. The town began as a precinct of Dedham in 1748, then it was separated as the District of Dover in 1784, and finally, it was incorporated as the Town of Dover in 1836. For much of its history, farming was Dover’s main industry, and this farming heritage is still evident in the town’s peaceful rural setting, beautiful scenery, and open spaces, which continue to be very important to the town today.
NORWOOD Norwood was first settled in 1678 by Ezra Morse, who set up a sawmill there. It was part of Dedham until the town of Norwood was officially formed in 1872. There was a Minuteman company organized in the area during the Revolutionary War, and Abraham Lincoln came through the town during his pre-inaugural tour of New England. The Oak View Mansion was completed in 1870 and hosted Presidents William Howard Taft and Calvin Coolidge.

WESTWOOD First settled in 1641, Westwood was originally part of Dedham and was called “West Dedham.” It was the last town to separate from the original town of Dedham, which happened in 1897 when the town was officially incorporated. The oldest house in town is the 1680 Joseph Colburn House, which has been extensively restored and is now a private residence.

CANTON First settled in 1650, Canton was incorporated in 1797. A gunpowder factory was started there by Paul Revere during the American Revolution, along with the first rolling copper mill in the country. Also in Canton is the David Tilden House, one of the oldest houses in America. The Canton Viaduct is a stone arch bridge that was constructed in 1835 to connect the rail line between Boston and Providence and is still in use today. It is the only remaining viaduct of its kind.
DEDHAM Dedham was one of the first settlements of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was founded in 1635. Its Fairbanks House from 1637 is likely the oldest surviving timber-frame frame dwelling in the U.S. The first man-made canal in North America was created in Dedham in 1639. In 1642, Dedham’s first mill was built, and industrial mills followed in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1921, the well-known Sacco and Vanzetti murder trial was held in Dedham’s Norfolk County Courthouse.

MILTON First settled in 1640, Milton was incorporated in 1662. It grew into a thriving mill town with some of the earliest mills in New England. The first chocolate factory in New England opened in Milton in 1764. In 1774, delegates met in Milton and adopted the Suffolk Resolves to protest Britain’s Intolerable Acts, which were then passed on to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. The Forbes House Museum was built in 1833 and housed four generations of a successful family involved in the China trade, displaying historic artifacts and art from that time. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

BRAINTREE Braintree was first colonized in 1625 and was incorporated as a town in 1640. It purchased its land from Native Americans in 1665 in order to obtain a clear title to it. Ironworks were established in 1643, and glassmaking was started in 1752. Manufacturing continued to be an important industry to the town as it grew, with factories producing a wide variety of products in the 18th and 19th centuries. The General Sylvanus Thayer Birthplace is a restored 18th-century home that was built in 1720 and remains open for tours.
QUINCY Originally part of Braintree, Quincy was incorporated in 1792 and is one of America’s most historic cities. Once wellknown for its granite quarries, it was also a major shipbuilding center. It is the birthplace of the U.S. Presidents John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams, as well as the Revolutionary patriot John Hancock. Included in Quincy’s historic sites is Adams National Historical Park, which features several historic buildings.

WEYMOUTH Settled in 1622 and incorporated in 1635, Weymouth is the second-oldest settlement in the state. The earliest expeditions around Massachusetts Bay started from Weymouth. The town was dependent upon farming and fishing, and when local bog iron was discovered in 1771, iron manufacturing began there. The town also had a successful shoemaking industry that lasted until the early 1970s. The Abigail Adams Birthplace is located in Weymouth.

RANDOLPH Settled in 1710 and originally part of Braintree, Randolph was incorporated in 1793. It is named after the first president of the Continental Congress, Peyton Randolph. The town grew into a major shoe and boot manufacturing center in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are three nationally registered historic places in Randolph, and the Boston School for the Deaf was established there in 1899.

AVON Once part of Stoughton, Avon was incorporated in 1888. The first settler was a blacksmith named Moses Curtis, born in 1678, and with many of his surviving children living nearby, by 1749 the area was called “Curtis Corners.” It went on to become Avon, named after the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. For this reason, the town’s seal features Shakespeare’s portrait.

STOUGHTON Settled in 1713 as part of Dorchester, Stoughton was officially incorporated in 1726. Named for William Stoughton, the first lieutenant governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the town supplied cannon and powder to colonial forces during the Revolutionary War. The Suffolk Resolves were first drafted in Stoughton’s Doty Tavern and went on to form the basis for the Declaration of Independence. The town’s manufacturing industry included shoes, rubber, textiles, and machine tools. The country’s oldest choral society is the Stoughton Musical Society.

HOLBROOK After several changes to its name and borders starting in 1640, and originally part of Braintree, Holbrook was incorporated in 1872. It was named for benefactor Elisha Holbrook, who supplied the town with funds for the town hall and library when it was incorporated. Farming was an important industry in the town throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. It also became a center of boot and shoe production, producing boots for soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
NEEDHAM Needham began to be developed in the 1640s when colonists explored the area. Originally a part of Dedham, the Needham land was purchased in 1681 from a tribal leader. Needham was later incorporated in 1711. Throughout the 1700s, sawmills and grist mills opened along the Charles River. Due in part to the expanding rail line, industrial employment and production increased during the mid-1800s, which included the manufacturing of knitwear. The town further developed in the post-WWII era with the construction of nearby highways, leading to positive growth in business and investment.

WOULDN’T LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE
By Marcie Wallis | Photography: MCM Photography
Jess and Mark Erickson are no strangers to the area: Jess grew up in Newton, and Mark was raised in Brockton. With their two boys, Miles, 12, and Maceo, 9, they take advantage of all the outdoor activities the Lower 128 has to offer.
Just minutes from their home in Canton is the Blue Hills Ski area which offers year-round recreation. The Ericksons take their energetic Bernedoodle Logan for long walks around Ponkapoag, hike by the Blue Hills Trailside Museum, or swim in Houghton’s Pond. In the
winter, of course they ski at Blue Hills Ski Area, and they always attend the annual First Day Hike hosted by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) on Jan. 1. “It’s a great way to reset for the new year - outdoors in nature as a family unit.”

Dedham Community House Pool

One of the reasons they chose Canton was not only the activity level, but also the strong sense of family and community. At first sight, Jess and Mark loved that the neighborhood seemed family oriented. “There is a lovely park across the street from our house, and many homes had outdoor toys and sporting equipment.” As a whole, the Erickson family is pretty athletic: the boys play baseball and football, the whole family skis, and Mark trains for bodybuilding in their home gym. In addition to Blue Hills Ski Area, Ponkapoag Golf Course is nearby, Wilson Mountain Reservation is right around the corner, and Houghton’s Pond Recreation Center is practically in the backyard. There is always something to do outside.
In addition to the community-feel of Canton, Jess said the location is phenomenal. “It’s so easy to get around: either towards the city or the south shore.” In the city, the Ericksons cheer for all the Boston sports teams. But they
also enjoy attending concerts and productions at classic Boston venues like The Wilbur, Leader Bank Pavillion, the Xfinity Center, and the Boch Center.
At home, the Ericksons have made close friends in Canton. In the beginning, Jess wasn’t sure what the neighbor situation would be since they shared a garden bed. “We were absolutely delighted to find out that our direct neighbors were a family with four boys, in the same age range as our boys.” The families hit it off immediately and now spend a lot of time together – whether it’s a sporting event, sleepover, playing at the park, or cooking out. “We couldn’t have wished for a better outcome and feel super lucky for such great neighbors and friends.”
Jess and Mark’s extended family also lives close by, so they spend as much time as possible with them, seeing shows, going to the beach, skiing, hiking, or just hanging out.

farmers local
Shopping locally means supporting local businesses. Local farms throughout the area depend on residents to sustain their way of life. Farmers are dedicated to creating quality products and work hard to get them in the hands of local consumers. There are a myriad of reasons to buy local products; typically, they taste better and have more nutrients. Buying your food locally also means that you’re supporting a local family, preserving open space by supporting farming, and you’re engaging in a time-honored connection between “eater” and grower.
LOCAL TIP

Gianetti’s in Franklin has the best tasting u-pick blueberries. Small, friendly family-run place and it’s easy in and out. They are always so friendly and welcoming to my kids. We love going every year!
– Kristina S.
For an old-fashioned, out-in-thecountry, family-run farm stand, check out Jane and Paul’s Farm Stand in Norfolk. They have strawberry and blueberry picking in the summer, and in the fall you can enjoy apple picking, pumpkin patches, and a corn maze. In Sharon, Ward’s Berry Farm offers fresh fruits and veggies, gourmet grocery items, a sandwich counter, soft serve ice cream, and a variety of pick-yourown flowers and berries depending on the season. For delicious pick-your-own blueberries, try Gianetti’s in Franklin in July and August. Visit the barnyard animals, stroll the trails, or sign up for one of many special events and culinary programs at Powisset Farm in Dover. Volante Farms in Needham has been a working farm for over 100 years and features a deli, cafe, farm stand, and garden center.
