Nebraska is home to one of the most famous billionaires in the world, Warren Buffett. Buffett, also known as the “Wizard of Omaha” or “Oracle of Omaha,” still lives humbly in the city in his lifelong home.

WELCOME TO LINCOLN, NE

Regardless of whether you have moved from across town, from another state, or from overseas, settling into a new area can be both thrilling and overwhelming. Within the first few months, new routines will be established, new friends will be made, and you will begin exploring your new community. With so much to learn and so many tasks at hand, it can be mind-boggling to figure out which businesses deserve your loyalty, what daycare centers are trustworthy, and where all the best local hotspots are.

BeLocal Lincoln is dedicated to making your transition as smooth as possible. In your hands, you are holding the best of Lincoln. We have found the best businesses, restaurants, parks, activities, and local events. Written by longtime locals of the city, you can trust us to be your word-of-mouth guide to the area. We have pieced together everything you need to know and everything you want to know about Lincoln.

Take it from us, Lincoln is one of the best-kept secrets of the Midwest. With one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at 3%, the city only continues to build momentum and seek growth. The median home price in Lincoln is right at $245,000, and the city’s population

continues to hover right around 295,000. In addition, Lincoln’s cost of living is 7% below the national average and our current average age is 32 years. While the city is generally laid back and a great place to raise a family, game day is one day we DO take seriously!

All in all, Lincoln takes on the “Nebraska nice” mentality and is one of the friendliest places you can find. Again, our goal at BeLocal Lincoln is to help you discover all the local hotspots and secrets of one of the happiest cities in the country. To do this, we put our heart and soul into creating a resource guide that is specially made just for you. Hold onto it, reference back to it, and enjoy all it has to offer. Welcome home.

MEMORIAL

HIGHLIGHT STADIUM

Memorial Stadium, home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, becomes the third-largest city in Nebraska when filled with loyal Husker fans and visitors. With a reputation as one of the most intimidating locations to play, the stadium seats 91,000 but bursts that number regularly.

“The Sea of Red” is a well-known nickname for diehard Nebraska fans as they fill the stadium on game day. It is a sight to behold as devoted supporters line the way for players as they approach the stadium during their unity walk.

In the fall of 1922, a drive for $430,000 in stadium construction funds was undertaken by faculty, students,

alumni and friends of the University of Nebraska. Within 90 working days, Memorial Stadium was built with 31,000 seats. Dedicated on October 20, 1923, the stadium was named in honor of all Nebraskans who served in the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II.

Today, Memorial Stadium is also home to the Osborne Athletic Complex. This cutting-edge facility houses

the coaches’ offices and players’ locker room. Additionally, the Charles and Romona Myers Performance Center has a home in the stadium providing over 600 UNL student-athletes tools to maximize their performance.

As one of the most high-tech stadiums in the country, Memorial Stadium was the first on-campus stadium to feature big-screen instant replays. After several upgrades, the stadium is now fitted with a massive replay screen atop the North Stadium. The HuskerVision screen is over 117 feet high by over 33 feet wide.

Although the experience of being inside the stadium is phenomenal, the exterior of the stadium is a stunning structure to witness. It is a statement of strength, grit, and determination. No doubt, it serves the culture of Nebraska well. The four exterior corners of the stadium bear inscriptions offered by a former UNL professor of philosophy, Hartley Burr Alexander:

SOUTHEAST: “In Commemoration of the men of Nebraska who served and fell in the Nations Wars.”

SOUTHWEST: “Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory.”

NORTHWEST: “Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport.”

NORTHEAST: “Their Lives they held their country’s trust; They kept its faith; They died its heroes.”

Bertram G. Goodhue designed state capitol building was completed in 1932 and is the second tallest capitol in the United States.

LINCOLN

sweet tooth

HOT SPOTS

Lincoln is a great place for those with a sweet tooth! Local sugar artisans have carved out many special niches that make favorite treats seem new again.

Lincolnites know nothing brightens up a tedious workday like receiving a chocolate brown box wrapped in a bow. There’s something about smelling and feeling the warmth of freshly-baked cookies before you can even see them. This is the experience Tricia Ward, aka “The Cookie Lady,” envisioned when she started delivering fresh-from-the-oven cookies all over town through her business, The Warm Cookie Company. Guests are welcome to stop by the shop near Pioneers and Highway 2. But be prepared, the fresh smell of cookies will engulf you! It’s a favorite for kids, with a cozy atmosphere and chalkboard tables for doodling between cookie crumbs. Sending warm cookies and milk comes with no delivery fee, so it’s no surprise that deliveries are the bulk of their business. Tricia’s daughter, Sharice, now owns the business and has embodied her parents’ motto of changing lives one cookie at a time.

just off 56th and Pine Lake. They have creative flavors like “cereal milk” that vary in taste from Fruity Pebbles, Cap’n Crunch and Frosted Flakes. 402’s uniqueness keeps patrons coming often to see what they have up their sleeve. The owner, Tyler, prides himself on using the most premium ingredients and locally sourcing whenever possible.

On another note, it’s sad that someone may struggle to satisfy their sweet tooth because of a dietary restriction. Thanks to Angela Garbacz, Lincolnites don’t have that problem. As their merch states, they specialize in “buns, buns, buns.” Better yet, their offerings are always changing with the seasons and holidays. With vegan and gluten-free options on hand, their perfectly Instagramable shops are always hopping. The self-proclaimed “woman-powered bakery in the great plains” has received numerous national accolades. Perhaps the most impressive, Angela was crowned the “Most Innovative Woman in Food and Drink” by Food & Wine magazine. Start with a sweet bun and coffee from the original Goldenrod shop before heading across the street for the College View Farmers Market held on Sundays during the summer. Goldenrod’s second loca tion recently opened in The Bay near downtown, which is known for its skate park, coffee, art and community.

Moving on, 402 is the Lincoln area code, and it’s also Lincoln’s newest small-batch craft ice cream shop. With their first shop in the Haymarket exploding with loyal followers, they have now expanded into south Lincoln

Finally, if you’re looking for the best slice of cheesecake Lincoln has to offer, look no further than High Society Cheesecake. High Society makes rich, smallbatch cheesecake from scratch daily. Their menu boasts a wide variety of classic flavors, as well as rotating limited edition and sea sonal flavors! Stop in their South 48th Street location for one slice, a whole cheesecake or mini cheesecakes for your next get-together or event. You can also find High Society served in several local restaurants around town, as well as stocked in a few different Lincoln grocery stores, including Hy-vee, Super Saver, Russ’s!

In addition to these four local staples, we also gathered a comprehensive list to help satisfy sweet tooths all over Lincoln. Check them out!

FRIENDS furry OUR

Tristan Bouc, Lincoln Local

“Pet-friendly Lincoln” is a common theme among many of our local businesses and gathering places. Between hotels, apartments, assisted living, restaurants, breweries, parks, and shopping spots, the Lincoln community appreciates the opportunity to share experiences with pets.

According to Brad Holmes, lifelong Lincolnite and owner of Lincoln Budokan Dojo, “Pets are an extension of the family. Life is better with the companionship of a pet.” We know Brad is not alone in that sentiment, as the resources available to pet owners in Lincoln demonstrate this point.

One of the most vital resources for pet owners in Lincoln is the Capital Humane Society, which has served the Lincoln community since 1906. Pet adoption is one of the most frequently utilized services through the Capital Humane Society. The Pieloch Pet Adoption Center, located at 6500 S. 70th St., handles all pet adoption services, as well as spay and neuter services, dog training, and endof-life services. Information about all services can be found online at capitalhumanesociety.org

On another note, outdoor dog parks are busy year round and offer abundant space for dogs of all sizes to run and play. Below are the most popular locations:

Stransky Dog Run at Peterson Park: 4419 Southwood Dr.

Rickman’s Run/Holmes Lake Dog Park: South 70th and VanDorn streets

Roper East Dog Run: North 7th and Adams streets

Mahoney Dog Run: North 84th and Adams streets

Tyrrell Park: NE of North Cotner and Baldwin streets

For a complete list of Lincoln’s dog parks, visit lincoln.ne.gov/CITY/parks/parksfacilities/dogruns.

Indoor dog parks are also available and often include daycare, training, and other resources too. Below are the two we recommend:

Paws 4 Fun: 222 N. 44th St.

Camp Bow Wow: 5930 S. 57th St.

Finally, finding a trusted veterinarian is a priority for many pet owners. Lincoln has an abundance of highly recommended veterinarian clinics to choose from.

In South Lincoln:

Cotner Pet Care: 1265 S. Cotner Blvd.

Ehlers Animal Care: 3540 Village Dr.

Clocktower Animal Clinic: 7121 O St.
