Regarding photography, he said, “I’ve always had a passion for photography, and in 2018 I purchased my first drone. After the first flight, I fell in love with aerial photography. The view from above is amazing. I’m always chasing my next sunrise, sunset or something that can only be appreciated from the sky.”

welcome to HICKORY
A NOTE FROM MAYOR GUESS
WELCOME TO HICKORY, WHERE LIFE IS WELL CRAFTED. Hickory is for doers and makers seeking a wellrounded community. As our brand statement says, Hickory is an hour from Charlotte and Asheville at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along I-40, where a collective spirit of craftsmanship strengthens any endeavor with detail, artistry, and quality. I can say from living in Hickory my entire adult life and working for the City of Hickory for the past 42 years, I completely agree with these statements.
From farm-to-table restaurants, outdoor adventures on Lake Hickory, and eclectic downtown shops to a growing craft beer scene and arts and cultural community to rival that of cities more than twice its size, Hickory offers the perfect balance of large city amenities and small-town charm.
I am happy to brag about all the wonderful amenities and destinations in Hickory. Our city has 26 parks that I guarantee will meet everyone’s needs. I encourage you to spend some time in our newly renovated Downtown Hickory, the Viewmont Business District, the OLLE Arts District, or our University Mill District, and you’ll soon discover why National Geographic Travel recognized Hickory as one of 2018’s Best Small Cities in America and why U.S. News & World Report ranked Hickory among America’s 10 Best Places to Live Near the Mountains out of 150 most populous metro areas in the country in 2021!
Most any night of the week, people are gathered at the local establishments or outside enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery. Residents and visitors can take a short drive, or walk or bike ride on the new City Walk, to visit one of the City’s many special attractions, the SALT Block, which stands for Science, Art, and Literature Together.
Driving through Hickory, you will notice that infrastructure improvements and new developments are occurring throughout the city. A new gateway leaf structure at the exit to Highway 70 from U.S. 321 lets visitors know they have arrived in Hickory.
The new Hickory Trail that is being built combines five phases of development – City Walk, Riverwalk, Historic Ridgeview Walk, OLLE Art Walk, and Aviation Walk –to create a 10-mile multi-use pathway that connects amenities and destinations throughout the city from Lenoir-Rhyne University through downtown to Lake Hickory, past the Crawdad’s Baseball Stadium to the Hickory Regional Airport. The Hickory Trail is shaping our city’s growth for the future.
There is so much to do and see here. You have picked the perfect time to make Hickory your home. I look forward to hearing how you have crafted your life in Hickory. Please visit our websites www.hickorync.gov and www.MyHKY.com for more information about the things I have mentioned and all that makes Hickory well-crafted.
Once again, I would like to Welcome You to Hickory!

LICENSE TO
DRIVE!

When moving to the state of North Carolina, you are expected to get a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence, as well as title and register your vehicles. You will need to visit an NCDMV office, and it’s recommended to get an online appointment at ncdot.gov/dmv for your license. It’s recommended that you consider getting an NC Real ID, which will be needed to board commercial flights in the next few years. Once you have your appointment, make sure you have your documents, namely your out-of-state license, Social Security card, and two documents in your name verifying your NC physical address, such as utility bills, lease, mortgage statement or pre-printed financial statement.
DRIVER’S LICENSE OFFICE
1033 Smyre Farm Rd., Newton, NC 28658 ▸ (828) 466-5516
309 Pine Mountain Rd., Hudson, NC 28638 ▸ (828) 726-2504
After obtaining a North Carolina driver’s license, new residents must also register their vehicle when they accept gainful employment or at the expiration of the time granted by the reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and
their prior state of residence (usually 30 days), whichever occurs first. You will need the vehicle title (or registration card), title application, odometer disclosure, NC driver’s license and the NC vehicle insurance information. New residents can initially register their vehicles without an inspection; one will be required to renew.
All vehicles with a valid North Carolina registration are required to have continuous liability insurance provided by a company licensed to do business in North Carolina. Out-of-state policies are not accepted. To avoid fines and fees, an individual should not cancel their insurance until they have surrendered their license plate to the NC Division of Motor Vehicles. North Carolina law also requires insurance coverage for uninsured/underinsured motorists, as well as minimum bodily injury and property damage limits. It is recommended to consult with a reputable insurance agent that knows the requirements of the State of North Carolina.

“I love the atmosphere of the outdoor market and all the venue options at the Hickory Farmers’ Market. We have baked goods, flowers, fresh produce, homemade coffee, homemade soaps and crafts all from the local community. It’s super clean and filled with live music on Saturdays. It’s my favorite place to be!”

CITY WALKS OF HICKORY AND LENOIR
If you are new to the Foothills, you may be surprised to learn about all the improvements the City of Hickory is investing in public works. Recently, a complete renovation of the grounds and parking was completed at Union Square. Along with this, planning and construction are ongoing with the Hickory trail, which comprises the City Walk, River Walk, Aviation Walk, Historic Ridgeview Walk, and OLLE Art Walk. These are a series of interconnected paths and walkways designed for foot and bicycle traffic.
The City Walk is an existing 1.7-mile, 10-foot-wide, concrete, multi-use path that goes from St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church across Highway 127 over a pedestrian bridge, through downtown adjacent to Union Square across Third Street, over another pedestrian bridge and ends at Ninth Street NW. It will tie into the future OLLE Art Walk, which will run down Old Lenoir Road and tie into the Aviation Walk near 12th Avenue NW and the Riverwalk.
The Aviation Walk begins near Old Lenoir Road and 12th Ave NW and goes over an iconic pedestrian bridge over Highway 321, which is slated for an overhaul. It passes LP Frans Stadium, home of the Hickory Crawdads, and continues toward the airport. It will end near the aviation museum, which is under construction and will have some of the best views of the mountains in the area.

THE RIVERWALK PHOTO-HICKORY METRO CVB

The Riverwalk runs from Geitner Park along the lake and will tie into the end of the OLLE Art Walk, which is under construction. Portions of the Riverwalk are elevated over land, and an elevated walkway extends over the lake, allowing public access to one of the area’s most attractive assets. The Riverwalk will eventually connect with the current Northbound Highway 321 bridge after the new bridges are built, and it is converted for pedestrian use. Parking is at Geitner Park, at the end of Old Lenoir Rd, and The Jaycee Park.
On the other end of the City Walk, the Historic Ridgeview Walk, under construction, will connect with the City Walk and run through Ridgeview from City Hall Ridgeview Library, Brown Penn Recreation Center and end on 4th ST SW near Hwy 70.
Construction is ongoing, so for up-to-date information, visit www.HKYTrail.com.

Across the river and up the hill, The City of Lenoir Greenway is a system of several loops and endpoints meandering through an urban landscape of parks and open areas, recreation centers, the library, and wooded tracts. It offers more than 9 miles of paths and trails for outdoor activities, including running, walking, cycling, and mountain biking. These trails include the Main Greenway, the T.H. Broyhill Walking Park, and the Greenway on Morganton Boulevard. The Zacks Fork Bike Trail offers nearly 3 miles of off-road trail for mountain biking. PASTOR LUTZ PASTOR LUTZ

Pastor Xenophone Lutz spent most of his life in the Foothills. As the Senior Pastor of Gethsemane Missionary Church in Newton, he has seen a lifetime of changes. Born in Hickory, he grew up during the time of segregation, where blacks and whites attended different schools. He remembers times when blacks and whites could not go to the same places and do the same things.
In the time of his high school years, he went to Ridgeview High School, which in the ‘60s was an all-black school and a football powerhouse. He was a member of the team referred to as “The Untouchables,” which are remembered to this day. He married his wife, Peggy, in 1966 when he was just out of high school.
They raised three daughters, two who live in Greensboro and the other that lives in the greater Atlanta area. One is a principal, one is a teacher, and the other has her doctorate in Education and is an administrator for a Community College. Peggy passed away not too long ago, after 53 years of marriage.
Pastor Lutz went to Winston Salem State University and also went to CVCC. Later on, he attended Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury. He worked for General Electric for 30 years, retired and ended up in the Lord’s service. During his life, he became active in Morning Star Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities, such as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
The Lord lay on his heart that he should preach, which led him to become the Senior Pastor at Gethsemane Missionary Church in Newton. When asked what he was most proud of in his life, he thought for a minute. “I am proud of my marriage and raising my girls. Raising my family is a proud accomplishment. I am most proud of my turning to God in my late 20s to early 30s. I turned to God and was saved by the Lord Jesus Christ.”
If he could give a person who just arrived in our area advice, he would recommend going to the Hickory “Uptown” area, which is what the area around Union Square and near the theater was referred to by the people in Ridgeview who had to go up the hill to get there. Also, he would suggest Market on Main and the Olde Hickory Tap Room.
When asked what he liked about the Foothills, he said, “It’s progressive, but it still has traditions.” He feels that the work that the towns have put into their downtown areas is paying off. He has seen and experienced things that are hard for our younger people to imagine, but things change and improve. “There are bumps in the road, but things do get better.”
“We’re moving in the right direction.”

THE
UNTOUCHABLES
Across the South, In the 1960s, segregation was the law of the land. Among other things, black and white people did not go to the same schools. They each had their own schools, athletic programs, and football associations.
During this time, Ridgeview High School in Hickory was a school for African Americans, and it became a football powerhouse. In the early ‘60s, they went undefeated but lost in the playoffs. They were becoming a spot of pride for the town of Hickory. When 1964 rolled around, things were special. The Ridgeview Panthers were powerful, and they knew it.
Xenophone Lutz, Senior Pastor of Gethsemane Missionary Church in Newton, was a senior on that football team. They played and won 12 straight games and captured the State Title, winning the final game at Lenoir Rhyne. The main rivals of Lenoir, Newton, Morganton and Hickory all fell by the wayside without scoring a point. Actually, no one scored a point. Not a field goal, not a touchdown and certainly not a safety. Not in the regular season, not in the playoffs, not in the championship game. This streak continued for the first two games of the 1965 season.
Pastor Lutz said, “That was in our minds, but of course it was more important to win the game. The coaches tried to keep our minds off of that, but young men are going to think about it. I’m sure the coaches wanted it too, but we all wanted the championship. We had come close before.” He added, “However, if the starters were sitting, and the other team drove, they went back in the game. We didn’t want anyone to score.”
Pastor Lutz played on the offensive line at guard and center, and also on the defense as a lineman and linebacker. You see, back then it was common to have young men play both ways during a game. They had to be in shape, and they had to have endurance. “Our coaches made sure we were in shape. We ran 5 miles before the season, and we knew we were stronger. We actually considered ourselves a second-half team. We knew if we were close at halftime, we would wear them out in the second half.”
That team is known as “The Untouchables,” a name that locals remember. They became a source of pride for the entire city of Hickory. Many of those young men would be approached when out around town or at their jobs by well-wishers.
Time has marched on, and segregation was struck down. Schools were integrated, the students went to Hickory High School, Ridgeview was closed, and the team became a memory. Now, the field has an archway to commemorate their accomplishments, and they were inducted into the Catawba County Hall of Fame. They still hold the record for consecutive games without allowing a point.

HOW LAKE HICKORY CAME TO BE...

In the Foothills, “The Lake” and “The River” are terms that are used interchangeably. Why? Well, we’ll explain.
Starting just east of Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Catawba River flows in our area through a series of reservoirs and eventually makes its way to the Wateree River in South Carolina, joining the Santee and reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Lake Hickory was created on the Catawba River in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam, which is 11 miles northeast of Hickory. The dam parallels the NC Highway 16 bridge over the Catawba River between Interstate 40 and Taylorsville. It is 122 feet high, with an overall length of 1,200 feet. The spillway section of the dam is 550 feet long. This dam provides electricity through two generating units that are located on the South Bank.
Located on the other end of Lake Hickory is the Rhodhiss Hydro Station that was built in 1925. It is 65 feet high and 1,500 feet long. It has three generating units and is responsible for the creation of Lake Rhodhiss, which is a source of water for Granite Falls, Lenoir, Morganton and Valdese. The lake is named for
the adjacent town of Rhodhiss, where flags that are on the moon were woven!
Lake Hickory is named after the city of Hickory and runs along its Northern edge. The lake covers almost 4,223 acres with 105 miles of shoreline. Full pond elevation is 935 feet. Lake Hickory is a reliable source of water for the cities of Hickory and Conover and the town of Longview.
Duke Energy owns the hydro stations, and in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, provides four boat access areas and one bank fishing area on Lake Rhodhiss and five boat access areas on Lake Hickory.
Fishing is permitted in the lakes with proper licensing (ncwildlife.org). Species that are present include Largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, carp and catfish. Numerous parks are located around the banks of the lakes and provide recreation for our locals and visitors.
