Shopping local means supporting local businesses. There are many farms throughout the area that depend on residents to sustain their way of life. Our farmers are dedicated to creating quality products and work hard to get them in the hands of local consumers. There are plenty of well-known reasons to buy local products; typically they taste better and have more nutrients. But shopping locally for food also means that you’re supporting a local family, preserving open space by supporting farming and you’re engaging in a time-honored connection between eater and grower.

HELP SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS AT FIRST FRIDAYS IN DOWNTOWN

WEST OF THE RIVER
“There is an artistic vein that runs through this valley,” began Ellen Sebastian.
A local potter and musical events coordinator, Ellen is entrenched in the rich fine-arts culture of the region. Local galleries are diverse and dot the valley.
“The Farmington Valley Arts Center in Avon has a number of artists who make their art there, as well as galleries. They’re open on the weekends and host a number of great classes,” added Ellen. “The Gallery on the Green in Canton is worth visiting, too! In Collinsville, there are a number of wonderful studios. The Collinsville Artist Co-Op on Bridge Street has a number of artists sharing the space and selling their stuff; there are all kinds of beautiful items.”
Nearby, Bridge Street Live hosts live music and stand-up comedy most weekends of the year. This connection between art and music is prevalent throughout the area. Pamela Vitale’s Art Studio in New Hartford features the artist’s original paintings and music. Also in New Hartford, Autumn Light Studio and Gallery showcases stained glass; Stagecoach Gallery and Laura J. Eden’s Art in Granby feature original paintings.
Whether you’re looking for large music festivals or a small backdoor venue, there are plenty nearby to visit.
“The Maple Tree in Simsbury has hosted live music on Friday and Saturday nights for over 40 years. There are a number of venues that host music throughout the valley; a lot of the small vineyards and farms host

EAST OF THE RIVER
outdoor music concerts,” Ellen explained. “The Collinsville Farmers’ Market once a month on Sundays from June through October, a really cool event for families, and there are a number of artisans who sell their work at the market, too.”
Other local favorites include Butcher & Baker in Farmington, which hosts live

An increase in support and interest surrounding arts and culture has erupted in recent years, as locals hunger for connection during the pandemic. Bree Maxwell, local entrepreneur and artist, is doing all that she can to help grow a community that holds artists up in Rockville.
“I want artists not just to survive but thrive in the community,” she laughed.
Born and raised in Connecticut, Bree understands what it takes to make a business successful, as well as how difficult it can be to make a living as an artist. She worked to open Studio 467 in Rockville, a unique space functioning as a studio,
music in their restaurant, and the Granby Concert Series is outdoors. Simsbury Meadows, a large outdoor venue, hosts a variety of local acts, as well as larger national musicians.
With such a rich and diverse fine arts scene, there is absolutely something for everyone!

gallery and workshop space for local artists. The character of the building, outside and in, reflects Bree’s outgoing, spunky and welcoming spirit.
“I’m a ceramic artist, and I decided that I was going to open a shop because I needed a studio space,” Bree explained. “All of the studios that I saw were either too expensive or too far away. I was in town visiting with the cobbler, and he suggested that I check out the large space next door to him, which had been vacant for over a year. I thought about it and realized that it was a business opportunity. I built out the space; it is important for me, as an artist, to have a community. I spent

years building the space and rented it to additional artists. I ask artists to consider not just working in the studio, but to sell their art and to teach classes here.”
Through Studio 467, she initiated “First Fridays,” a block party in Downtown Rockville, where artists can come and sell their work. Bree’s enthusiasm for creating a more supportive community for artists is contagious. She worked with locals to hold Shakespeare in the Park and is working with the town to re-district the downtown as an official art district. This would be the second of its kind in the state, and the label would help to define the town’s initiative, as well as their intentions to truly support the arts.
This is a community that believes in the power and importance of art, and it is just one of the reasons why the towns east of The River are truly special.

“We enrolled my 4 year old (now 5 and in Kindergarten) in the Children’s Academy at Squadron Line School. We felt that it was an amazing experience that allowed for the transition to Kindergarten to happen seamlessly. They did an amazing job of balancing fun and learning, and she also got the experience early of what it is like to be in a school and be able to participate in book fairs, buying of school lunches and even just the simplicity of understanding what it’s like to move through a hallway at the beginning and end of each day. We can’t wait to do it for our younger daughter when it is time!” - Lily Gill

Getting outside and exploring is a great way to get to know the area. There are plenty of parks, waterways, events, and ways to enjoy all of the seasons. Historians have plenty to take in, as do naturalists, hikers and families with small children. There is something for everyone! Whatever your pleasure, take some time to appreciate the bounty of experiences available to residents.

Some of the favorite parks and preserves include The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and the Farmington River Trail. Stretching from New Haven to Northampton, Massachusetts, this hugely popular, paved trailway is favored by bikers, skaters, joggers and families with carriages. There are plenty of places to park in Farmington and Simsbury to access this trailway. The McLean Game Refuge spans Granby, Farmington and Simsbury. The privately owned reserve is over 4,000 acres, and has nice quiet and scenic trails to explore. Aqueduct Parcel in Farmington is an easy walk that is just under a mile; part of it abuts the Farmington River. This is a favorite to explore in the springtime when wildflowers like columbine, purple trillium, and marsh marigolds pop with color. Talcott Mountain State Park in Granby is a short walk, with the iconic Heublein Tower standing at the top. This is a wonderful spot to check out foliage in the fall! Johnnycake Mountain Park Trails in Burlington has easy parking and a couple of loop trails to explore, with wonderful views during all four seasons. The Lake at Winding Trails is incredibly peaceful and is well-traveled by locals.
WEST OF THE RIVER
Fishing is a favorite pastime of many locals. The Farmington Reservoir is a beautiful place to sit and look out over the water, and the quiet nature trails wind for miles through the woods. The Farmington River is stocked at various places, including Farmington and Simsbury – be sure to bait for trout early in the season! This river hosts the highest concentration of trout in the state per square mile. Salmon Brook is stocked in Granby, and this is a local favorite for fishing in June. Great Pond and Grimes Brook host some great fishing holes in Simsbury, while families like Black Rock State Park and Spaulding Pond in Avon. A great family fun event is the Buddies and Bobbers Fishing Derby each May at Walton Pond in Farmington.
Collinsville Canoe and Kayak has boats available for renting, and Main Stream Kayak offers down river tours, which even beginners are sure to enjoy. Brodie Beach in New Hartford offers passes for residents and non-residents alike, and is a fun place for families with younger children. Summer concerts are plentiful; Summer Concerts Under the Pavillion in New Hartford, Sunset Concerts in Granby, and the Simsbury Performing Arts Center host concerts big and small, with all sorts of music selections.
Every June, Canton hosts the Everyone Fight Cancer road race; the Raymond Zacchera Memorial Scholarship is a family-friendly race in Avon at the end of August.

The Women’s Triathlon takes place in Farmington in September, and is a true spectacle, as is the Litchfield Triathlon each July in New HartfoRoad Every September, the Granby Road Race is a fun community event, as is the Simsbury River Run.
Open Farm Day in New Hartford happens during the harvest season, and is always full of family fun, as well as some educational events. There’s nothing quite as exciting as the Annual Simsbury Fly-In, Car Show & Food Truck Festival, hosted at the Simsbury Airport during the blissful days of September. In October, the aptly named Cartober Fest Car Show in New Hartford is also a crowd-pleaser and an event to add to your schedule.

Fishing is a favorite pastime of many locals & Grimes Brook host some great fishing holes in Simsbury.
LOCAL TIP

Hike to the Mic is a wonderful event hosted at the end of August. People hike to the top of Heublein Tower in Simsbury on Talcott Mountain, and a number of local bands play there. It is really fun!”

EAST OF THE RIVER
IF YOU WANT TO GET OUTSIDE AND HAVE SOME FUN, THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF PLACES TO EXPLORE AND ACTIVITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EAST OF THE RIVER.
For families with strollers, walking down old Main Street in South Windsor is fun and relaxing; the wide, flat roads and beautiful scenery make it an easy walk any time of the year. The Windsor Canal Trail is well mapped with plenty of places to park and explore. Adam’s Adventure in Tolland is a fun, accessible playground, where children of all abilities can come and play.
Photos below by: Rusty Watson
Take the time to explore, try something new, and get outdoors. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to bring your camera!

From swimming in the lake, walking trails, a lodge to rent for events and a beautiful pavilion, this spot is sure to become one of your favorite places to spend an afternoon. There are even some great fish hiding in the lake! Wickham Park in Manchester is a privately owned property with an aviary, nature center, disc golf course and playgrounds. The gardens are beautiful and are worth
taking the time to explore. The beach and miles of trailers at Valley Falls in Vernon are certainly fun, but the real draw to this local favorite is the waterfalls and scenic vistas. The Nathan Hale Homestead is a state forest, encompassing nearly 1,500 acres. There are endless miles of trails winding through forests and fields, with lots of wildlife and nature to take in while you wander.
Locals recommend taking the time to explore the trails at Nevers Park in South Windsor, Hockanum River Trail, Case Mountain or the Hop River State Park in Manchester, Wanat Park in Tolland. Family members with four legs or two are sure to enjoy a day at Crandall Park in Tolland. There are dozens of additional places around to explore; get outside and have some fun!

TAKING CARE OF YOUR MIND, BODY
& SPIRIT
Health is broken down into many components by modern science, measuring different aspects and angles, offering support and diagnosis that don’t always provide a full picture of a person’s well being. Each individual is different; we can’t be defined by numbers and norms. While modern medicine has brought many wonderful, life-saving advancements and technologies into our lives, it too often looks as symptoms and pieces rather than the whole system. Nothing in our body operates independently of the rest.
Holistic health is different. It considers all sides of the story, considering how systems and elements in the body interact. Organic and ancient practices often hold the keys to our health. CHRIS CHRIS
LUGINBUHL

LtoR:Chris’sonKory,
Written by Elizabeth McCabe
“I’m a recovering alcoholic but because of God’s grace I am in sobriety,” says Chris Luginbuhl. “I put down a drink in 1978 and so many wonderful things have happened in my life since.”
andoldestdaughterHeidi
One of the most significant contributions Chris has made to the community is through his involvement with Become Part of the Solution, a non-profit organization based in VernonRockville, Connecticut and is part of the Union Church in Rockville, Connecticut. Founded in 1991 by Chris and Smokey Orcutt, a former drug and alcohol counselor, the organization aims to provide support and resources to individuals struggling with alcohol and substance abuse.
The genesis of Become Part of the Solution stemmed from a pressing need to assist those who were unable to access treatment due to financial constraints. Recognizing this gap in the system, Chris and Smokey established
USING PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO HELP OTHERS FIND SOBRIETY.
a network of volunteers dedicated to extending a helping hand to the sick and suffering. Over the years, the organization has sponsored hundreds of individuals seeking assistance with their addiction issues, offering a lifeline to those in desperate need.
Chris’s commitment to serving others is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Raised by Swiss and Polish parents who instilled in him a sense of community and compassion, Chris has always been driven by a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of those around him. Whether it’s organizing fundraising events, providing sober housing, or offering emotional support, Chris’s efforts exemplify the transformative power of altruism.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONVERSATION
Beyond his work with Become Part of the Solution, Chris’s passion for environmental conservation and wildlife advocacy has led him to embark on various initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the plight of endangered species, particularly leatherback turtles. Drawing inspiration from his own experiences of overcoming adversity, Chris has dedicated himself to protecting these majestic creatures and preserving their natural habitat.
His concern for wildlife stems from his upbringing and one story that made an impression upon him as a child. “My father back in 1951 was on a tuna fishing boat off of Long Island,” he recalls. “He brought back a large leatherback turtle 60 miles inland. I was 4 years old at that time and a lot of people came to see it. It was harpooned and they didn’t know if it was edible. My father called Yale Museum and that was the first skeleton to be put on display in their
Chris’youngest daughter Krista, Chris,
museum. That’s how I got involved with the sea turtle. After I got sober, I went to Yale myself and the skeleton was still there.”
When Chris realized that no one had done any satellite tracking or diving studies, he decided to take action. “My passion was tracking the first animal in history,” he explains. “In 1981, my dream came true. That’s when I determined their breathing patterns and did diving studies. I found out that plastics were killing turtles, and I came up with the first TV spots educating people about plastics. Turtles mistake plastics for jellyfish in their diet.” Through his educational pieces, Chris spread awareness to others to protect wildlife.
BEHIND THE LENS
In addition to his advocacy work, Chris has also found solace and fulfillment in his newfound hobbies, such as photography. Through his lens, he captures the beauty of the world around him, sharing his passion for life and sobriety with others. His photographs serve not only as visual reminders of the wonders of nature but also as tokens of hope and inspiration for those on their own journey to recovery.
Chris even did the first satellite tracking for animals back in 1989. “That was another dream of mine in sobriety,” he says. He took Greg Marshall, the inventor of the Crittercam, down to the U.S. Virgin Islands to test it out. “That camera has done many National Geographic television specials,” says Chris.
In the process, he gave life to Greg’s dream to start the Crittercam. “Greg was ready to give up and we helped him get started,” he says. Now the Crittercam has documented the footage of animals under the sea, which has been fascinating.

LOCAL TIPS
When Chris isn’t helping others, he enjoys visiting small towns with a vast space between them. Exploring new space is fun for him. He also likes living in the local area. “If we want to travel, we’re close to major interstates, such as 84 and 91, and others,” he points out.
During the holidays, Chris also likes the parades that are held in many of the local towns. Expect to find him checking out the Memorial Day parades as well as the Fourth of July parades. Watching fireworks light up the sky, especially on Fox Hill, is also a moment that he cherishes.
Another highlight for Chris is attending farmers’ markets and enjoying the community’s two lakes, Shenipsit Lake and Crystal Lake, for their beauty and pleasure.
What does Chris appreciate about the area? “Raising my children in good school systems,” he says with a heart of gratitude. “We never had any difficulties with the education in our area. It was a blessing.”
A HEART OF GRATITUDE
As Chris reflects on his life, he remains humbled by the outpouring of support and gratitude he has received from the community. “It’s all about God’s grace and the people who helped me out,” he acknowledges. For Chris, every day is an opportunity to pay it forward, to extend a hand of compassion and kindness to those in need.
Chris Luginbuhl’s story is inspiring, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, there is always the possibility of redemption and renewal. Through his unwavering dedication to serving others, Chris has not only transformed his own life but has also illuminated the path to recovery for countless individuals seeking solace and support. In his tireless efforts to become part of the solution, Chris embodies the true essence of compassion, resilience, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
