GREATER CONCORD & THE LAKES

about the COVER

"WINNIPESAUKEE LIGHT SHOW" GILFORD NH

I set up my camera and tripod, ready for what I hoped would be the perfect sunrise on Lake Winnipesaukee. Just as the sun was about to cross the horizon and make its grand entrance, the sky decided to throw a colorful party. It was as if the sky was showing off, blowing up the sky with vibrant hues and colors. And the best part? I was the only one there, probably because everyone else was still in bed like usual when I was out in the mornings, capturing scenes like this. I had frontrow seats to nature's light show, and let me tell you, it never disappoints.

A History of the State House in Concord, NH

The first discussions regarding the erection of a suitable state capitol building in New Hampshire took place in the year 1814. It was indeed a memorable year. The War of 1812 had come to a close with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, although the news had not reached America until after our troops under General Jackson had continued fighting into 1815 and won the famous battle of New Orleans. The contest was between Concord, Hopkinton, and Salisbury, the last named town having offered seven thousand dollars for the honor. In the end, Concord won, and by 1816 final action had been taken to build there. The considerable expense was saved by the town of Concord by the decision to build the Capitol of granite from what are now the Swenson quarries at the north end of the town and to have the cutting and shaping and facing of the stones done by the inmates of the prison. A feature of the new and imposing building thus provided was its huge gold-painted wooden eagle, which was raised to the top of the dome in 1818. Appropriate ceremonies presided over by Governor Plumer were marked by a series of toasts, one of which was, “The American Eagle. May the shadow of his wings protect every acre of our united continent and the lightning of his eye flash terror and defeat through the ranks of our enemies.” The new building’s actual cost was only approximately $82,000, but it provided adequate quarters for the legislature and committees, the Governor and Council, the Secretary of State, the Treasurer, and the library. Stuart J. Park, the builder, goes down in history as having done an admirable job, and he has Concord Street to the north of the building, Park Street, named in his honor. The first session of the legislature to be held in the new building was in 1819.

Interested in knowing when the State House was expanded; other towns where it may have been re-built; and the cost of building it? These facts and many more are revealed online at the address below. www.nh.gov/almanac/ state-house.htm

S.S Mount Washington Cruise Ship, Laconia, NH

The first vessel was the S.S Mount Washington, a wooden side-wheeler 178 feet in length with a beam of 49 feet. Referred to today as the “Old Mount”, the vessel was built and launched in 1872 by the Boston & Maine Railroad company to transport travelers and cargo from one side of the lake to the other. On a cold December evening in 1939, a fire broke out in the railroad station and quickly spread down the ramp to the dock where the S.S. Mount Washington was berthed for the winter. Attempts were made to set her free, but lake water levels were low and she was stuck helplessly in the mud. The ship was completely destroyed, as was the entire railroad station and boardwalk. Captain Lavallee was devastated by the loss of the S.S Mount Washington but soon announced that he would replace the vessel with a new, bigger and faster ship. He rallied local support and formed a new corporation, and set

about launching his new venture. Eventually, a vessel was found on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Built in 1888, the Chateaguay was 203 feet long and constructed of iron. In the following months, a hired crew from Boston General Ship & Engine Works dismantled the Chateaguay hull, cut it into twenty sections and shipped it by flatbed railroad car to Lakeport, New Hampshire. The S.S. Mount Washington II has undergone many physical changes over the years. The two most significant were the ones that included changes to her designation. In 1946, a replacement of her steam engines with diesel rechristened her as “M/V Mount Washington”. In 1982, the ship was cut down the center and an extra 25 feet was added to her length. In doing so, she was reclassified as an official ship by maritime standards. Again she was rechristened, this time as “M/S Mount Washington”.

In 1906 Otto G. Keller answered an employment ad for Phillips’ candy store in Laconia, NH and at least in the eyes of children of all ages, the Lakes Region has never been the same. In the early 1920s, Otto introduced homemade ice cream and was the first person to offer it year-round. Kellerhaus still offers ice cream all year-round in the Weirs. The ice cream was frozen and stored with ice harvested from Lake Winnipesaukee and tons of rock salt. The early 1930s saw the advent of the refrigeration industry, which made production easier, but it also brought the Great Depression.

In 1939, Otto’s sons Seth and Pittman joined the family business. They began to sell their 16% butterfat ice cream (as opposed to the 10% of their competition) wholesale to selected businesses around the area. In 1950, Otto semi-retired but stayed busy as a bookkeeper for the business, a state senator, a leader in the Masons and helped found a bank. In the 1960’s they started searching for

In the ‘70s popularity of the fudge, turtles, buttercrunch and pecan bark forced another addition which is today the candy room. Additional seating for the ice cream buffet was added in the 80s to handle the growing summer crowds. In 1987, Seth’s son Rick and his wife Kathy Keller took over Kellerhaus as Seth, much like his father Otto went into restless retirement. In 1989 Seth and his son Rick decided to sell Kellerhaus to Jeff and Bettina Potter who continued to use Keller family recipes and traditions to proudly make the finest quality ice cream and candies in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.

In early 2004 the Potters sold to David and Mary Ellen Dutton, and now the tradition of Kellerhaus excellence continues with owners Daryl Dawson and Brian Head who purchased the historic business from the Duttons in the spring of 2017. To this day the same Keller family recipes and traditions are used to make our homemade chocolates, candies, and ice cream. Kellerhaus chocolatiers also regularly make new chocolates, ice cream flavors, fudge flavors and candy for future generations. It’s a great mixture of nostalgia and innovation in all the Kellerhaus confectionary creations.

HENNIKER BREWING COMPANY

129 Centervale Rd., Henniker, NH 03242

603-428-3579 ▸ Since 2011, we’ve been brewing beers that we like to drink- that New Hampshire could be proud to call its own. We brew beer with the real New England spirit of independence, hometown pride, and hard work. Our goal is pretty simple- to bring people together over a beverage New Hampshire could be proud to call its own.

CONCORD CRAFT BREWING COMPANY

117 Storrs St. Concord, NH 03229

603-856-7625

Concord Craft Brewing Company began in 2015 to bring great craft beer into the heart of downtown Concord, NH. We found space in the 150-year-old Merrimack Farmers Exchange building on Storrs Street in the heart of historic downtown Concord, just two blocks from our logo-inspiring gold-domed state capital building. We installed a state-ofthe-art steam heated 15 barrel brewhouse in 2016 and opened our doors in January 2017 with just three beers on draft. We expanded our offerings throughout 2017, offering full pours in our small tasting room and self-distributed kegs and cases of 16oz cans to NH restaurants, bars and craft beer retailers.
