EAST MESA

about the COVER
On our cover, photographer Jeff Kwartler beautifully captures the “Road to Discovery,” showcasing the striking Bulldog Cliffs of the Goldfield Mountains along the Bush Highway, just outside Mesa, in the Tonto National Forest.
Jeff moved here from Michigan on a chilly February day in 2001, and said the allure of the state captivated him instantly, especially the weather. Relocating his real estate business and photographic pursuits to the Valley of the Sun proved to be a decision laden with success. Beyond its renowned weather, Arizona presents a canvas for capturing breathtaking sunrises, sunsets, wildlife, and picturesque landscapes.
Jeff says, contrary to his expectations, Arizona isn’t just a haven for his photography – he enjoys all of the diverse recreational activities this state offers, from ice hockey and tennis, to hiking, boating, camping, and beyond. With camera in tow, Jeff enjoys exploring Arizona and taking part in the wealth of year-round opportunities this state offers for both work and play.

Article on Pets & Pup Parks
Hi there! I’m Dr. Usiak, owner and medical director at East Valley Urgent Pet Care in Mesa, AZ. After earning my undergrad in Buffalo, I packed my bags for Glasgow, Scotland to pursue my veterinary degree. I fell in love with wound care, emergency medicine, and infectious diseases, which led me to Phoenix for an ICU internship. Arizona’s landscapes and culture won me over, and after noticing a gap in pet care during the pandemic, I opened East Valley Urgent Pet Care. Veterinary medicine is not a glamorous career, but it is highly rewarding in the sense of not only helping those without a voice, but also to help strengthen and build the humane animal bond. Should you ever find yourself needing urgent medical care for your pet, know our team at East Valley Urgent Pet Care is looking forward to helping you as best as we possibly can.

Article on History of Mesa

I am proud to trace my family’s roots back several generations in Mesa. The Hakes family goes back 8 generations, the Rogers 5, and the Randalls, who arrived in Arizona in 1858, 3 generations. My father, Dilworth, was heavily involved in Mesa’s civic, political, and church life and was named ‘Man of the Year’ in 1954 at age 37. I graduated from Westwood High in 1966, served an LDS mission in Germany, and worked in insurance for 52 years. Active in Scouting for over 65 years, I’ve received numerous awards, including the Silver Beaver. I’ve served on various community boards, including Rotary, and continue to contribute to local charities and projects.

Mesa HISTORY OF
The Hohokams and the Founding of Mesa Mesa, Arizona, traces its roots to the ancient Hohokam civilization, who thrived from 300 B.C. to 1200 A.D. The name “Hohokam,” meaning “those who are gone,” reflects their mysterious disappearance by 1450 A.D. The Hohokams built sophisticated adobe structures and an extensive irrigation system stretching 700 miles along the Salt and Gila rivers, which remains a hallmark of their culture today. Key archaeological sites include Casa Grande National Monument, the Mesa Grande Ruins, and the Park of the Canals, which preserves around 4,000 feet of Hohokam canals.

The Founding of Mesa
In 1846, Mormon pioneers traveling west for Salt Lake City were asked by the U.S. government to provide a battalion for the Mexican-American War. Their exploration of the Salt River Valley informed Brigham Young’s decision to send settlers to Arizona. In 1876, Young’s emissaries, Daniel W. Jones and Henry Clay Rogers, founded Lehi near Mesa. In 1877, Rogers advised Francis Pomeroy to “go up on the mesa,” leading to the settlement of Mesa, strategically located at the end of a Hohokam canal, minimizing irrigation needs.
Mesa’s Growth and Development
Mesa, originally a small farming town, expanded rapidly by the early 20th century. In 1906, it became a hub for freighting supplies to the Roosevelt and Granite Reef Dams, boosting its growth with a reliable water supply. The city took control of its utilities, further aiding development.
In the 1920s, Mesa became a commercial center with major highways—60, 70, 80, and 89—connecting the city to regional trade routes. The dedication of the LDS Church’s ninth temple in 1927 further established Mesa as a cultural and religious center, attracting thousands annually.

Falcon Field and Military Influence
Mesa’s growth accelerated during World War II with the establishment of military training bases. Falcon Field trained British pilots, while Williams Field trained U.S. and allied pilots. After the war, Falcon Field became a busy municipal airport, now home to over 130 businesses, including Boeing. Williams Field transitioned into Mesa Gateway Airport in 1993, which hosts over 40 businesses and a customs facility.

“City Limitless”
In 1945, Mesa eliminated the property tax on land, making it one of the few U.S. cities to do so. This policy, combined with revenue from utilities and sales taxes, spurred growth. The 1950s saw Mesa become a destination for Major League Baseball spring training, thanks to Dwight Patterson and the HoHoKam Civic Club, who continue to support the event and local charities.
Mesa Today
Mesa has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. since the 1960s. From 2018 to 2022, the city’s GDP grew 38%, employment rose by 2%, and infrastructure expanded by 34%.
Mesa, often referred to as the “City Limitless,” has been honored multiple times as an AllAmerica City. It boasts outstanding parks, top-notch city services, and A+ rated schools. Join us in making Mesa a vibrant place for you and your family to live and thrive!

EXPLORING ARIZONA’S WINTER TRAILS WITH YOUR DOG: TIPS FOR KEEPING FIDO SAFE FROM VALLEY FEVER
Winter in the greater Phoenix area is the perfect time to explore Arizona’s stunning hiking trails with your furry friend! While you’re out adventuring, it’s worth being mindful of some health considerations, like valley fever, to keep your pet healthy and happy
Valley fever, a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides spores, is common in Arizona’s desert soil. These spores become airborne when the ground is disturbed by wind, construction, or foot traffic—especially occurring on hiking trails. When your dog inhales dust carrying these spores, they can become infected.
Symptoms may include coughing, lethargy, loss of appetite, and in severe cases, lameness or difficulty breathing.
It’s good to be aware of valley fever, but it’s helpful to know that your dog (or even cat!) can still pick it up even at home. But don’t worry—by keeping an eye out for symptoms like coughing, tiredness, or a drop in appetite, you can help catch it early and keep your pet healthy while enjoying the great outdoors!
The good news is that you can still enjoy the beautiful trails while reducing risks! Stick to paths with firm, packed soil,
especially after windy days, and avoid areas with loose dust. If your dog loves to dig, you may want to limit this in high-risk areas to minimize exposure.
As always, pack plenty of water for your dog and take regular breaks in shaded spots. Even in winter, staying hydrated is key to making sure your hike is fun and safe for both you and your pet. Support your outdoor adventures by providing the care and guidance your pets need to enjoy every season safely. Arizona’s natural beauty is meant to be experienced, and we’re here to help your dog explore it with confidence!

your
school
Moving to a new school district in most cases is fairly straightforward; however, in Arizona, it often poses MANY questions as there are several K-12 tuition-free options to explore!

East Mesa area offers varied options for K-12 District and Charter School, tuition-free education. Here you’ll find a brief overview of some options to consider.
Mesa has a premier education system and District and Charter School options are both available free of charge, so new residents have many choices. Researching and exploring the tuition-free school options is essential in the decision-making process and knowing what experience suits your child and family is the next best step, whether it’s online research or setting up tours for an in-person experience.
Whether you choose a District or Charter School, there is a process of enrollment that varies from school to school. School choice and public tuition-free schools set Arizona aside from numerous states across the country. Choices are plentiful and the doors are open regardless of your address.

A Local’s Perspective to Help Guide Your Educational Decision!
Local resident Kelli Beard found the checklist below helpful in guiding her family’s educational pathway!
Does the school offer different experiences (Classical Liberal Arts, Gifted, Montessori, Performing Arts, Traditional, Special Education, etc.)?
Is the proximity of the school important to you? Do you need/want preschool, K-6, 7-12, within minutes of each other?
Does the school’s calendar schedule work for your family?
Is the arrival/dismissal process streamlined and well organized? Does it work with your schedule?
Do you need before/after care? Does the school offer it at times you need?

“San Tan Charter School was the final tour of many before we made the decision to move forward with registration. It was the ‘We have an educational journey that suits your growing family!’ that ultimately put our choice at ease.” – Kelli F.
Are there reasonable class sizes and above-average classroom resources?
What is the school’s teaching approach (large-group direct instruction/smallgroup project-based)?
What are the homework expectations and uniform options? Do they align with your family’s wants?
What is the school’s curriculum? Does the school offer electives, specials, access to EVIT and/or extracurricular activities that are important to you? Are they available to every child?
What is the school’s recess and discipline philosophy, and how is it implemented? Does it align with your beliefs?
What parent involvement is allowed/ encouraged in the classroom setting? Are there opportunities for parents and/ or grandparents to volunteer?

TOP HOME RENOVATIONS TO MAXIMIZE VALUE

When it comes to increasing the value of your home, smart renovations can yield a great return on investment. Here are four projects that can boost both functionality and appeal.

1. KITCHEN UPDATES

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the first-place buyers focus on. Minor upgrades like refacing cabinets, replacing dated hardware, and installing a modern backsplash can make a significant impact. Lighting also plays a key role; updating pendant lights or adding under-cabinet lighting can modernize the space affordably. For appliances, make sure finishes are uniform—stainless steel remains a timeless choice.
2. OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
In Arizona, outdoor spaces are an extension of the home. Enhancing your backyard with simple landscaping, adding shade structures, or creating designated seating areas can transform it into a resort-like retreat. DIY projects like building a fire pit or adding lighting are budget-friendly ways to enhance the space.

3. MODERNIZING FIXTURES
Replacing gold or outdated hardware with finishes like brushed nickel can instantly modernize a home. This includes doorknobs, faucets, and uniform light switch covers. For bathrooms, framing mirrors and updating vanity fixtures are affordable changes that create a cohesive, updated look.
4. ENERGY EFFICIENCY UPGRADES
Energy-efficient features, such as sunscreens or smart thermostats, are both practical and appealing to buyers. These upgrades not only reduce energy costs but also increase the home’s overall marketability.
By focusing on these areas, homeowners can enjoy their renovations and see a solid return when it’s time to sell.
HOME TIP
Renovate in the following order: Wiring, plumbing, roof and windows are first. Then drywall, new flooring and cabinetry. Last is paint and decorating.

HOME MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
a handy to protect your biggest investment
REGULAR MAINTENANCE IS CRITICAL TO KEEPING ANY HOME RUNNING IN TIP-TOP SHAPE. PUTTING IN THE SWEAT EQUITY TO MAINTAIN YOUR HOME, OR PAYING A PRO TO DO IT FOR YOU, PREVENTS COSTLY REPAIR HEADACHES LATER ON.
MONTHLY/REGULARLY
□ Change out air filters in your home every 30-90 days.
□ Spray for pests and weeds regularly to prevent over infestation.
□ Clean BBQ grills every 6-10 uses to prevent hazardous grill fires.
□ Chlorine pool filters should be cleaned every 3-6 months depending on the style of filters; have your pool/ spa serviced monthly. And always test pool water after weather events.
□ Vacuum tops of cabinetry and behind the stove and refrigerator. Dust is combustible.
□ Remove built up lint inside the dryer and dryer vents, as this is a fire hazard.
□ Wash the washer; once a month, run an empty load with just hot water and bleach.

ANNUALLY
□ Have your HVAC unit serviced annually. Buy no-rinse coil cleanser. Condenser coils should be cleaned a minimum of once a year and drain lines flushed annually.
□ Extend the life of your water heater by having it inspected each year and flushed/drained.
□ Have your electrical/breaker panel inspected and serviced annually.
□ Have all drains, garbage disposals, toilets, showers, and sinks inspected every year to ensure proper flow to avoid upcoming damage.
□ If you have garage doors it is recommended to coat the overhead torsion springs mounted above roller tracks with a garage door lubricant and lube the rollers, hinges and track while you’re at it.
2+ YEARS
□ Clean evaporator coils every 2’5 years depending on the house.
□ Clean air ducts every 3-5 years unless a purifier is installed.
□ Dryer vents should be cleaned every 3-5 years.
□ Carpets and tile should be professionally cleaned every 1-2 years to avoid indoor air quality issues.
□ Roof inspections are necessary every 7-10 years depending on the style and type of roof.
□ Inspect windows and doors for leaks and foundational issues every other year.
□ Insulation should be inspected every other year due to settling and or other conditions.
□ Sweep and clean the fireplace/chimney every other year.
□ Drain your pool every 2 years and fill with new clean water, this makes the chemicals easier to maintain.

10 HOME HACKS TO MAKE LIFE A BREEZE
1. Revive and sanitize a wooden cutting board by sprinkling salt on its surface and scrubbing with a lemon slice. To restore its shine, lightly wipe it with food-safe mineral oil.
2. To remove rust from knives or around the house, mix equal parts lemon juice and baking soda, then scrub gently.
3. Whiten dingy white clothing by soaking it in denture tablets.
4. Freshen laundry—especially after sports—by adding ½ cup of baking soda.
5. Prevent water from boiling over by placing a wooden spoon across the top of the pot.
6. To keep avocados and apples from browning, squeeze lemon juice over them.
7. Wrap cheese in parchment paper to help it stay fresh longer.
8. Repurpose bread bag clips to organize cables and wires, and label them for easy identification!
9. For limescale removal, fill a sandwich bag with CLR or white vinegar, submerge the showerhead, secure the bag with a rubber band, and let it soak overnight. In the morning, just wipe it clean.
10. Rub a wax candle along window tracks to ensure they slide open smoothly.
