THE EARLY YEARS

OF PHOENIX

The history of Phoenix is as amazing as the ancient settlers, immigrants, and peoples who brought it to life. The Hohokam tribe are the first known settlers and made the Phoenix area their home for over 2,000 years. In order to make the dry Salt River Valley inhabitable, the innovative tribe constructed a widespread system of irrigation canals reaching over 135 miles. Some of the canals that were originally built by the Hohokam are still in use today.

The United States gained control of the Phoenix area from the Mexicans in 1848 at the end of the Mexican-American War and Phoenix was founded 20 years later in 1868 by John W. Swilling. While Swilling was traveling through and saw the potential of the land, just as the Hohokam had. He recognized that, although the area was dry, it had the ideal terrain and climate for farming.

Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912, and on that same day, Phoenix was named the capital. Major technological advances fueled growth in the city

in the early 20th city. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt began construction on the Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River. The Dam supplied both water for irrigation and electrical power to the city.

In 1920, Phoenix was booming, and its population doubled to 30,000. The economy during this time was based on cotton, citrus, and cattle. By the end

of World War II, the population continued to grow as veterans that were posted at Phoenix military bases saw the potential of the city and returned with their families.

Technological advances had a great effect and the economy shifted from purely agricultural into an industrial city. Also during this time, air conditioning became affordable for individual homes. With temperatures over 100 degrees in the summertime, Phoenix was now pleasant to live in year-round. One population greatly affected by the availability of air conditioning was retirees, who now flocked to the city.

Today, transplants from all around the country have made Phoenix the fastest-growing city in the U.S., creating the amazing melting pot of American cultures that Phoenix is known for.

The largest state capital by population, Phoenix is the only capital with a population of more than 1.5 million residents. The Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, is part of the Salt River Valley and the North Valley is typically comprised of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Cave Creek — cities that offer a relaxed desert setting that remains a dramatic backdrop for life in the desert!

Tal and I met at the University of Michigan (go blue!). We have 2 boys – Brooks (7) and Levi (5). We love to travel, hike, and spend time outdoors exploring as a family.

As a pediatric dentist and business owner, I love to make meaningful relationships with my patients and their families. It is wonderful to be a role model to many kids including my

Balancing family and business is always a hard task. I try so hard to be present for my kids when I get home from work

or on my days off. Sometimes it feels like I can’t do it all – but I remind myself I am doing my best. When I am working and have to miss things at my kids school, I make sure my kids understand that I enjoy what I do for work and that a lot of families rely on me to help them.

Richard J Stephenson founded the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in 1988 after losing his mother to cancer.
