How Tulsa Became the Oil Capital of the World
Photos provided by Tulsa Historical Society & Museum
Like most communities, Tulsa has a rich history of prosperity and peril. In 1541, Spanish explorers came to Oklahoma searching for gold and silver but changed their trade of choice when they spotted the native herds of buffalo. Over the next 300 years, fur traders made their way into the area, and otters, bears, and elk roamed freely throughout the region. After the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, the following decades saw a territory of rough country shift into a thriving town.
FUN FACT
At the height of the oil boom, more than 30 trains per day stopped at the Glenn Pool Oil Field.

CATTLE DRIVES

Native Americans and other pioneers who moved into Indian Territory were starting from scratch. Many began small farms to feed their families and earn income while others started ranches to produce beef for family and market. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation owned large amounts of land, and tribal members used or leased cattle on these lands for profit. Much of what is now Tulsa was part of the Perryman Ranch. Cowboys were employed to work the ranch and drive the cattle to sales points. Just like the Chisholm Trail mentioned in old John Wayne movies, large herds of cattle were driven up from Texas into northeastern Oklahoma.
CREEK COUNCIL OAK
The native people of this region were the Osage, who moved across the tallgrass prairie with the buffalo. Members of the Lochapoka, a branch of the Muscogee (Creek) tribe, came to this area on the Trail of Tears and built the first settlements in the late 1830s. They brought their visions of a new home in Indian Territory, along with keepsakes and reminders of their previous life in Alabama. The Lochapoka carried the ashes of their sacred fire on the journey to establish their new town. They rekindled the fire beneath the large post oak to signify the continuity between their old and new homes. The Council Oak became the location of Lochapoka ceremonies, feasts, games, and business until the mid-1890s. Now a city park, the Creek Council Oak at 18th Street and Cheyenne Avenue is a site on the National Register of Historic Places and considered Tulsa’s founding landmark.

1879, the Perryman Ranch home became the headquarters for Tulsa’s first post office.

THE RAILROAD ARRIVES
In 1882, when the railroad made its way through Kansas to the banks of the Arkansas River in Tulsa, the cattle cars could then take the herds to market all over the country. Ranching was widespread until the early 1900s when the focus shifted from cattle to oil. Once a rough and tumble place, the need quickly grew for general stores, hotels, horse stables, and blacksmith shops as railroad workers and others moved into Indian Territory. Tulsa pioneers quickly set up businesses near the railroad and the town began to thrive. At least three newspapers were being published by 1898 when the town decided to incorporate, which was a solid sign that Tulsa was on the move. Establishing a police department and building Tulsa’s first public schools quickly followed.
FUN FACT
During 1907, Oklahoma produced more oil than any other state in the United States and any other country in the world.
THAT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING
A foundation had been laid for an impressive and diverse city. Quality of life within the community was very important. The Osage who had already settled in the area joined other Native Americans who moved in, white and black settlers, ranch hands and farmers, railroad workers and missionaries, merchants and drifters, preachers and teachers, lawmen and outlaws, the hopefuls and the hopeless. These and others made history by moving in and trying to move up. By the end of the 19th century, Tulsa was a small but prominent cowtown.

Tulsa, where oil abounds
OIL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
On November 22, 1905, Robert Galbreath, a local explorer and investor, along with his crew found an oil-producing well. They named the well the Ida E. Glenn. It was this strike that brought Tulsa to national attention and attracted oil barons and workers to the area by the thousands. By 1906, oil refineries were built to handle the huge amounts of oil that were flowing out of the Glenn Pool, and oil companies began to move their offices to Tulsa to be closer to their investments. The discovery of black gold brought in gushers of cash to pave the streets and line them with homes and stores and skyscrapers. Tulsa barely resembled the Indian Territory it had been just a few short years before, and as Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Tulsa was poised to become “The Oil Capital of the World.”

ART DECO ARCHITECTURE
With this new wealth, new residents were determined to prove to everyone that Tulsa had class and culture. They wanted what was most modern, what was tallest, and what best reflected speed and motion. The realization of that vision succeeded in making Tulsa one of America’s showcase cities for Art Deco architecture. The famous zigzag style with its many repeated symbols and shapes can be seen in the Boston Avenue Church, Christ the King Church, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westhope.
With a stock market crash at the end of the 1920s and the ensuing Depression, financial hardships birthed the Art Deco PWA style. Named for the Public Works Administration that employed many Americans during the Depression as construction labor for public buildings, this more minimalist design is showcased in Tulsa’s Union Bus Depot and the Fairgrounds Pavilion.
As the Depression continued, Art Deco became more and more simplistic and design elements were flattened even further. Urban sprawl had also started to take over the city. By the 1930s, buildings had concrete walls, curved facades, and utilized glass bricks. Strip malls, parking garages, gas stations, and drive-in restaurants took over and signage and standardized design became important to help patrons identify businesses.

A burned block of the Greenwood District, located at the east corner of Greenwood Avenue and East Archer Street. Following the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, only the brick walls of the buildings remain standing.

THE WORLD AFTER THE WAR
Following World War I, Tulsa was recognized nationally for its affluent African American community known as the Greenwood District. This vibrant area was referred to as “Black Wall Street” and was home to many Black-owned businesses including grocery stores, banks, libraries, and more. In June 1921, a series of events nearly destroyed the entire Greenwood area. The details of what followed vary from person to person, but involve the arrest of a young African American man, claims that he would be lynched, and then a massive altercation between the black and white communities. In the wake of the violence, 35 city blocks of the Greenwood District lay in charred ruins, and more than 800 people were treated for injuries. Twenty-four hours after the violence erupted, it ceased. Initially, contemporary reports of deaths began at 36, but today’s historians now believe as many as 300 people may have died. The Tulsa Historical Society & Museum has created a traveling exhibit on the history of the Greenwood Area, and Greenwood Rising, a new museum that opened in the fall of 2021, tells the remarkable and resilient story of Greenwood and its surrounding community. Exhibits bring this story to vivid life on the very site of Black Wall Street, and their Pathway to Hope (a walking route between John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park and other sites in the Greenwood District) acknowledges this history, elevates Black Wall Street icons, and encourages present-day healing of past, yet lingering, wounds.

A FLAG FOR THE PEOPLE
In 2017, a group of private citizens organized an effort to design a new flag for the city of Tulsa. The effort, called the Tulsa Flag Project, received nearly 400 design submissions. The winning design was voted on by residents and the city council officially approved this design by unanimous vote on October 3, 2018.
1. The blue field symbolizes the Arkansas River, and the many resources it has provided throughout our history and today.
2. The horizontal line represents the 1901 discovery of oil, the “black gold” that brought substantial growth and commerce to this land.
3. The shield represents the Native American tribes forced to relocate to this region. It is also a nod to the Oklahoma state flag.
4. Within the shield, the red circle represents the bloodshed and lives lost during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street, the most prosperous African American community in the country.
5. The beige star at the center represents Tulsa’s bright future. A nod to Tulsa’s Art Deco architecture, it shows that we heal from past wounds and continue to flourish as an icon of a uniquely American city.
6. The beige field represents the warmth and community commonly found in Tulsa.
FUN FACT
The Golden Driller is a 75-foot-tall, 43,500-pound statue of an oil worker. It is the sixth-tallest statue in the United States and has been located in front of the Tulsa Expo Center since 1966.

TOMORROW’S TULSA
Tulsa has provided the world with so many gifts. Music like Greenwood Jazz and Western Swing got their start on these very streets. We’ve birthed artists like Patti Page and Roy Clark, plus TV personalities Paul Harvey, Tony Randal, and Donna Reed. Even Hopalong Cassidy, Gary Busey, and Kristen Chenowith have called Tulsa their home. Authors S.E. Hinton and Clifton Taulbert and athletes Kenny Monday (Olympic wrestling) and Felix Jones (NFL player) share what they learned here in Tulsa with the world. Those who have gone before us have left us with the legacy of how to build a community and tomorrow’s Tulsa is shaping up to be better than they could’ve ever imagined.
