The Tao House is a secret spot that I highly recommend visiting. Eugene O’Neill, America’s only playwright to win a Nobel Prize, made his home in Danville in the 1930s. Now a National Historic Site, you can tour the house and enjoy the grounds. The barn serves as a performance venue where plays are presented at different times of the year. - Janet F.

HISTORIC MURAL IN ORINDA 28 Orinda Way, Orinda

A 23-foot historic mural greets visitors to the Orinda Community Center and its neighboring park — the Orinda Historical Landmarks Mural. The painting is a replica of the mural that has been located, for more than 30 years, to the left of the entrance to Orinda’s BART station. The mural is based on a more miniature painting created in 1975.

THE SACLAN PEOPLE
The Saclans were part of a larger Bay Miwok tribe that lived in central California. Saclan homes were grass huts constructed using willow branches and tule grass from the creeks. Each family cared for its own needs in tribes of 50-100 persons. Creeks were essential to native life as they provided water for drinking, cooking, fishing and bathing. Throughout the year, the people held various feasts, gatherings and religious dances, many of which were tied to the oak trees’ biological rhythms. The acorn harvest in the fall marked the beginning of the new year. Obsidian stone trade among native tribes lasted for over 4,000 years and was one of the earliest trade items in prehistoric California.

LAFAYETTE’S FIRST PARK, ONE OF CALIFORNIA’S OLDEST
In 1864, at the busy intersection of what is now Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Moraga Road in Lafayette, a piece of land was deeded to all of the citizens of Lafayette, and it became what is thought of as perhaps one of the oldest parks in California. It was gifted by early pioneers, Elam and Margaret Allen Brown. Around 15 years earlier, Elam had purchased the 3,329-acre Mexican land grant called Rancho Acalanes that makes up almost all of present-day Lafayette. An image captured in the 1870s shows Benjamin Shreve’s general store and post office, what we now know as the Sideboard restaurant. While Benjamin didn’t find fortune during the Gold Rush, his entrepreneurial and civic spirit also brought Lafayette its first school and a central hotel.

GATEWAY TO LAMORINDA FROM THE EAST BAY
In the early days of the settlers, beautiful and balmy Lamorinda was for weekenders brave enough to venture up and over the Oakland Hills. Even a bit later, they often felt they were putting their life at risk each time they went through the terrifying 1903 tunnel. Everything changed with the opening of the Caldecott tunnel in 1937, and suddenly the towns of Lamorinda were more than just a place to picnic or get in a round of weekend golf — and by the time work began on BART in the late 1960s, Lamorinda was well on its way to becoming a desirable residential commuter suburb.

SCHARF
meet the SCHARF FAMILY

Kate Ryge and Scott Scharf first met as fourth-graders in Lafayette, and they could never have imagined where that early connection would lead. Kate says, “We were always in class together from elementary all the way through graduating from Acalanes.” Kate then went to UC Davis while Scott traveled to New York to study at Cornell. They remained friends, and romance bloomed soon after graduating from college. In 2014, Kate and Scott became Mr. and Mrs. Scharf. Things came full circle with their return to Lafayette as parents themselves in 2019.
Written by Andrée Hurst with the Scharf Family | Photography by Jennifer Lamba Photography

“We moved back to Lafayette to raise our two children, ages 3 and 5, and to be closer to our families again.” Kate continues, “We still love so much about this town that we remember from our youth, such as being close to the bike trails and downtown. We are also super grateful to live so close to the schools where our kids go.”
Scott is a lawyer in San Francisco, and Kate is a library specialist at Happy Valley Elementary School where she once went to school.
“We love the strong schools and community — many of our childhood friends are also in Lamorinda or close by!”

What are some of your favorite things to do with the kids locally?
Parks and playgrounds! Moraga Commons is our go-to, but Lafayette has a really great Parks and Rec department, and they're always working on improving parks/playgrounds and developing new ones. We love visiting the Reservoir, either to hit the playground or rent a paddle boat and get out on the water. Visiting Shelly the turtle at Orchard Nursery is a kid favorite (though I can never leave without at least one new plant). We live near the bike trail and often walk our dog while the girls scoot or bike along. This is definitely a community that places a high value on our outdoor activities! And we usually visit the library weekly to stock up on new reads.
Do you have a favorite "Staycation" destination? Sea Ranch is a favorite (about two and a half hours north), but we've also enjoyed the Russian River area, wine country, and (our little "secret") the Pinecrest area. It is great in the winter for skiing as it's less hectic than Tahoe but just as beautiful!
You both grew up in the area... How have things changed for the better?
Anecdotally, I'd say Lafayette has become much more diverse than when we were growing up. That's been a wonderful change. Downtown has exploded with great food and shops, too! It's a far cry from the town with one
main road, two pizza places, and a drugstore that it was when we were kids. I know change can be tricky, but I'm excited to see what the future holds for our little area.
Do you have a favorite place to bring the kids for a lazy afternoon of fun?
We like to go to Civic Park with the kids and Color Me Mine in Walnut Creek for some fun crafting time!
Where are your go-to date night destinations?
We usually stick close to home when we go out. For a special occasion dinner, we like Postino. For drinks and appetizers, The Park Bistro at the Lafayette Park Hotel is great. And for something more casual, Headlands Brewing Co. hits the spot. In our younger years, you could find us at the Round-Up pretty regularly. It's a fun scene!
How did you connect with other parents when you first moved here?
We joined Lamorinda Moms immediately! It's a club for families (they have dad/partner activities too!) that has existed for decades, and it's a great way to meet other families with kids in that 0-6 year range before they enter the school district. I've been a co-director for the past year, and it's not only been an incredible resource for asking questions about kids, childcare, etc., but I've made some lifelong friends along the way.

TILDEN REGIONAL PARK
Grizzly Peak Blvd., Berkeley
Just over the hill from Orinda, the 2,000-acre Tilden Park in Berkeley has several fun attractions for families. Be sure to download a map of the park so you can easily find everything, including an 18-hole public golf course and driving range, a merrygo-round with hand-carved and painted wooden carousel animals, botanical gardens, a miniature steam train to ride through the woods, and a “Little Farm,” a working farm that delights children daily!

I bet you’ve met your new neighbors, but have you met your trees? Let us introduce you! Trees can transform your outdoor space, provide privacy, and enhance your property’s value. Protecting and nurturing these natural assets is essential!
You need to know the age of your trees. When were they last trimmed? Are there any existing health issues? Are they susceptible to seasonal pests? Do any structural concerns pose a hazard?
With California’s mild climate coupled with the multiple micro-climates that exist in the East Bay, proper tree work is often needed year-round and may di er from tree to tree, including fertilizing, trimming, and watering. It is always best to ask an arborist first and schedule optimal tree care throughout the year.
