“In the winter, I enjoy snowboarding at Copper Resort. It has good trails and is the closest resort from here. The other three seasons, you might see me on the trail. I start out at First Street to get onto the trail and ride around the lake (often seeing people I know). The trail goes all the way to High Hops Brewery, which is a great place to quench your thirst. It only takes me about 20 minutes each way. When I first started using the trail, I crossed over too soon. The best place to cross is at Seventh by the lake where the traffic is lighter. Along the river on a summer’s night at dusk, it is you against the bugs! Wear bug spray (and maybe even goggles!) and keep your mouth closed.”

TRAIL RULES: • Park only in designated areas.

• Trail hours are dawn to dusk.

• *Non-motorized activities only.

• No horses are allowed.

• No pets off-leash.

• No swimming (applies to humans and dogs).

• No camping.

• No alcoholic beverages.

• No glass containers.

• *No fires, firearms, paintball guns, fireworks, or anything similar.

• Stay on the trail – no trespassing.

• Leave no trace: Pack out what you take in, including animal waste.

• Observe wildlife from a distance. No feeding, harassing, capturing or killing of wildlife along the trail.

• No picking flowers or plants or taking any wildlife home.

TRAIL ETIQUETTE In order for everyone to enjoy their trail experience, there are proper manners for all trail users to exhibit.

Remember the trail is for non-motorized use, including walking, running, cycling, and rollerblading. In order to avoid conflicts, observe the following guidelines: • Stay on the right side with the flow of traffic.

• Groups should be in single file when other trail users are present.

• Control your speed! Travel at safe speeds that allow time to react to unforeseen hazards, and allows the ability to slow down for corners and other trail users. Slow down and use caution when approaching or overtaking other trail users. Let them know if you are passing.

WHO YIELDS THE TRAIL? Before passing another trail user, make your approach known well in advance. Cyclists are encouraged to have and ring a bell when passing. A friendly greeting, “passing on your left,” also works well.

Faster users yield to slower users.

Respect the resources: Look at wildlife from a distance, leave wildflowers and plants for others to enjoy, and stay on the designated trail.

Always look in front and behind before changing positions on the trail.

Be courteous! All trail users should be respectful of other users regardless of the type of recreation activity, speed, or skill level.

Be respectful of private property. The Poudre River Trail is open to the public, but most of the adjacent land is private property. In many cases, adjacent landowners were generous in donating the land which the trail is located on.

Practice the “Leave No Trace” principles. Be sensitive to the area, stay on existing trails and pack out at least as much as you take in.

Eastman Park ▸ Eastman Park is located at Eastman Park Drive and County Road 17 (Seventh Street). From Windsor, head south on Seventh Street, and turn west on Eastman Park Drive. The park is right on the Southwest corner of the intersection.

The Poudre River Trail runs along the south side of the park, south of the Pavilion.

Frank State Wildlife Area Trailhead ▸ To get to the Frank State Wildlife Area trailhead from Highway 392, turn south on County Road 13 and drive 0.5 mile. The trailhead going east has parking for this section and informational signs. The trailhead going west is about 200 feet offset to the north along County Road 13.

There is no restroom at this trailhead.

River Bluffs Open Space ▸ This is an excellent spot to start your trip down the Poudre River Trail, especially if you are coming from Interstate 25. Exit I-25 at Highway 392 (Exit No. 262), go east towards Windsor for 1.5 miles, turn left (north) onto County Road 3, then turn right (east) onto County Road 32E. The entrance to River Bluffs Open Space will be on your right in 0.25 miles.

The history of the Town of Windsor stretches far beyond its official

incorporation in 1890. Before American travelers began to settle the area, the place we call Windsor was home to immense herds of bison and the native peoples that hunted them. Archaeological evidence at the Kaplan-Hoover Bison Kill Site proves human occupation of the area as early as 800 years before Christ. In the 1870s, a solitary building served as a stopping point midway between Greeley and Fort Collins, both already established towns at that time.

Windsor’s first beet dump, built in 1903, allowed wagons filled with sugar beets to easily load them into train cars rather than carting them long distances to the sugar factory. Beet dumps were one of many innovations in agriculture that made it possible for Windsor to grow its economy.

Since the arrival of the Great Salt Lake and Pacific Railroad connecting Greeley and Fort Collins in 1882, the Town of Windsor has been growing steadily even to today. As the population of the town surpasses 30,000 people, Windsor still maintains a small-town feel that helps its residents catch a glimpse of what life might have been like here 100 years ago.

EARLY BEGINNINGS In 1873, a settler named J.L. Hilton built a small house along the Overland Trail wagon road midway between Greeley and Fort Collins. The Halfway house, as it became known, served as a stopping point for travelers, stagecoaches, and mail deliveries. The arrival of the railroad reduced the necessity of the Halfway

House, but it remained a bustling saloon for many years. The railroad didn’t just make it easier for people to travel through Northern Colorado, it facilitated the transport of farmers’ crops and brought in investors and businessmen in increasing numbers. New advances in irrigation practices made it possible to sustain massive farms of wheat, and, most importantly, sugar beets.

THE SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY Like many northern Colorado towns, the sugar beet played a major role in the growth and development of Windsor.

Sugar beets were a cash crop that was often called “white gold.” The beets were chopped, processed, and refined into table sugar at the Great Western Sugar Company’s factory in town from 1905 until its closure in 1966. The sugar beet industry attracted large immigrant families to work on the labor-intensive beet farms and in the sugar factory.

The majority of these immigrants were Germans from Russia, whose culture made a great impact on the food, architecture, and businesses of Windsor.

COMMERCIAL AND POPULATION GROWTH Windsor’s economy continued to grow alongside its sugar beet production.

Farming families thrived and many new businesses opened along Main Street offering a multitude of services to its residents. The names of some of these businessmen are recognizable today, such as Manweiler and Yancey. Telephone service arrived in Windsor in 1893 followed by electricity in 1909. The Town of Windsor, despite its relatively low population, also boasted a hospital, opera house, multiple schools, and a town hall. Many of these buildings are still standing today and have been converted for many different uses.

For example, the old town hall is now Windsor’s Art and Heritage Center.

LOCAL > HISTORY > CONTINUED INDUSTRIAL GROWTH By the end of the first quarter of the 20th century, families of Germans from Russia were operating many of their own farms, and immigrant workers from Mexico replaced them in the fields. The sugar beet industry in Windsor drew to a close in 1966 with the shuttering of the sugar factory. New industries emerged, including a Kodak processing plant, which continued to employ generations of Windsor residents. Today, Windsor leads the way for northern Colorado in attracting green industry. In addition to windmill blade production, the area supports ethanol production, a newly upgraded recycling facility, and other green industries, Windsor has experienced unprecedented growth since 2000 and continues to attract families with its small-town charm and quality of life. Windsor has managed to balance its growth while maintaining the small-town feeling its residents are proud to call home.

FISHING AT WINDSOR LAKE The Windsor Lake is generally stocked with yellow perch fingerling, blue gill, channel catfish and trout.

Fishing is allowed year-round when ice is not present. Absolutely no fishing off the dock or on the swim beach.

Night fishing is allowed on the west side of Windsor Lake from the south end of the parking lot on Highway 257 north to the inlet bridge of the lake only.

Fisherman must actively attend their line in the water.

A valid fishing license is required.

Children under 9 must be accompanied by a responsible guardian 16 years or older.

Swim diapers are requested for use with young children and are available at the concession stand.

TAKE A WALK AROUND THE WINDSOR LAKE TRAIL, WHICH SURROUNDS THE PERIMETER OF THE LAKE. THE TRAIL IS 2.25 MILES AROUND.

• Dogs may be off-leash and run freely within the fenced area.

• The off-leash dog area is for dogs, their handlers and those accompanying them. No other use is allowed..

• Dogs must be under voice control of their handler and in view of their handler at all times.

• Dogs must be on leash when entering and exiting the off-leash dog area.

• Leaving dogs unattended is prohibited.

• Dogs must be vaccinated.

• Handlers must pick up after their dog.

• Puppies must be at least 6 months of age.

• Motorized equipment prohibited.

THREE YEARS AND TWO DAUGHTERS LATER, THEIR DESIRE TO BE CLOSER TO FAMILY WHILE RAISING THEIR GIRLS GREW STRONGER. SOON JAKE AND ANNIE WERE LOOKING FOR A COMMUNITY TO CALL HOME IN COLORADO ONCE AGAIN.

They were drawn to Windsor for its small-town charm and found home in the RainDance community. On hot summer days, you will find them at the neighborhood pool making memories with their three little girls. On Friday evenings they enjoy family time at the Pelican Lakes Sand Bar for dinner and live music. When they can slip away, their favorite local date night spot is Pizza Vino!

While Jake is juggling his many hats, Annie is juggling quite a few of her own. When she is not volunteering or participating in a Run.Windsor race, she is doing the hard yet rewarding work of being a mom to three little ones. Their oldest daughter, Lucy, is 5 and attends Windsor Charter Academy.

After school, she enjoys playing soccer through Windsor Recreation Center and taking dance at Just For Kix. Ruby is 4, and while she anxiously awaits going to school with her sister, she joins her at Just For Kix until then. Lastly is their youngest daughter, Goldie, who is just a year old. Annie spoke fondly of a Run. Windsor 10K event where Goldie got to join her. She ran this race with her

daughter nuzzled in the stroller in front of her. What a cherished memory… You see, Goldie has a beautiful story that shows just how loving and supportive this community is. Annie recalled how the community rallied around their family when they adopted sweet Goldie with very little notice. Everything they could possibly need in those first few weeks after bringing her home was covered.

The friendships they made through this experience have become family to the Cadwells and solidified their decision to make Windsor HOME.

FUN FACT Jake was named after Annie’s grandpa. His family, being from South Dakota, grew up and loved western movies, so they decided to name him Jake from the movie “Big Jake,” in which Annie’s grandpa, the Duke himself, John Wayne, starred.
