SUSTAINABILITY ENVIRONMENTALLY
RESPONSIBLE
Our club is committed to its environmental responsibilities. Since installing solar panels on our rooftop, we have significantly reduced our reliance on non-renewable energy sources, lowering carbon emissions and supporting the use of clean, sustainable power. This change not only helps conserve energy at our New Lambton head office but also contributes to reducing our overall carbon footprint, benefiting the wider community.
We’ve also made a positive impact through the installation of water-saving taps. These taps minimize water waste, helping conserve this vital resource, especially in areas experiencing water shortages. Promoting responsible water use is an important step in supporting healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future.
Additionally, by banning plastic straws, plates, and bags, we’ve reduced plastic pollution—one of the most pressing environmental concerns. Switching to biodegradable alternatives has helped lessen our environmental impact, particularly on marine life. These actions collectively contribute to a more sustainable, eco-friendly future

THE ANCHORAGE DONATES ITS BREATHTAKING VENUE FOR A CHARITY WEDDING, RAISING $50,000 FOR THE MARK HUGHES FOUNDATION.
In 2024, The Anchorage Hotel & Spa proudly hosted the 2 Monty’s Charity Wedding, raising an incredible $50,000 in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation.
On Valentine’s Day, the resort held a live auction featuring a fully donated wedding package valued at over $100,000. BowlingUpgradesClub ENHANCING ACCESSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR BOWLERS
THE WESTS GROUP HAS INVESTED $250,000 INTO UPGRADING FACILITIES AT WESTS NEW LAMBTON BOWLING CLUB, DELIVERING SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS TO THE CLUB’S INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE.
This project has enhanced accessibility, playing conditions, and long-term sustainability, ensuring a welcoming and high-quality space for members and visitors.
Wests directors Wayne Hore and Tony Keating formed a Project Team who researched and consulted widely to identify the best approach for resurfacing, leading to the successful installation of a new synthetic playing surface. These upgrades will provide long-term benefits, including improved durability, reduced maintenance costs, and an enhanced playing experience for bowlers of all levels.
This investment reflects Wests’ ongoing commitment to supporting local communities, strengthening social connections, and ensuring high-quality facilities for future generations.
MAJOR INVESTMENT IN NETBALL FACILITIES
Wests is proud to announce a major investment in grassroots female sport with the construction of a new netball clubhouse. For 44 years, Wests Leagues Netball Club has operated from a modest shed with inadequate facilities. This purpose-built clubhouse, located at the western end of New Lambton Bowling Club with access from Tyrone Road, will provide a safe, modern space for over 500 players across 50 teams.
The project also includes resurfacing six Councilowned netball courts, improving safety and enhancing the quality of play.
Wests Board Member and former Wests Netball Junior, Sam Poolman, shared:
“This investment in a new clubhouse and upgraded facilities is a game-changer for our netball club and community. A safe, inclusive, and supportive environment is crucial for all our netball community to thrive. I share my excitement for this project and how it will greatly benefit our community by providing the facilities that have been much needed to support and grow the sport for all.”
We look forward to keeping you updated on this exciting development.

West Rosellas 2024 season
AS PROUD SPONSORS OF THE WESTERN SUBURBS RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB (WSRLFC), WE CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OUR LOCAL JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT. THE ROSELLAS’ COMMITMENT TO NURTURING TALENT, RESILIENCE, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT IS A CORNERSTONE OF OUR SHARED VALUES.
The 2024 season presented both challenges and highlights for the Club, with two of the Club’s four teams finishing in the semi-finals. Adverse weather conditions significantly impacted the season, with Harker Oval closures forcing five of the nine scheduled home games to be played away. Despite these setbacks, the teams demonstrated resilience and commitment throughout the year.
First Grade, coached by Rick Stone, finished in seventh position on the ladder. While the team faced difficulties with training consistency and cohesion, their efforts reflected a strong commitment to the Club’s values.
The Reserve Grade side, led by Lucas Miller, secured the Minor Premiership but were defeated in the elimination final against Lakes United. The team’s strong bond and passion for the game were evident throughout the season.
Under 19s, under Matt Atkinson’s guidance, finished second on the ladder and reached the Grand Final, where they were defeated by Lakes United. This team displayed significant talent and potential for future success.
The Women’s Tackle team, coached by Tim Penny, saw steady development despite finishing outside the top four. With an influx of new players, the team worked towards building cohesion and establishing a solid foundation for the coming years.
We congratulate the Rosellas Club, including coaches, committee members, and support staff for their contribution to the club’s success. The Wests Group looks forward to the season ahead and the further development of local juniors.

This prestigious competition, which includes Championship, Opens, and Under 23’s divisions, provides a platform for athletes to excel and compete at the highest levels.
The 2024 season was truly historic, with Wests Balance Netball achieving an extraordinary milestone by securing premiership titles across all three tiers of the Tri-Series competition. The Championship team celebrated their sixth consecutive premiership title, the Opens team secured their firstever premiership, and the Under 23’s team claimed their fourth consecutive premiership title.
For the first time, Wests Balance Netball also claimed the prestigious Newcastle Netball Association Club Championship Trophy, a reflection of consistent and outstanding performances across all divisions throughout the season. This unparalleled success is a testament to the depth of talent, dedication, and cohesion demonstrated by the Club’s players and coaching staff.
Key to this year’s achievements was the integration of the junior pathway players into the Opens and Under 23’s teams, as well as the inclusion of 21’s players in senior training sessions. These initiatives strengthened the Club’s pathway framework, offering junior players invaluable experience while preparing them for future senior opportunities.
The loyalty and dedication of players and coaching staff remain central to the continued success of Wests Balance Netball. Player retention across the Club is unmatched, reflecting a supportive environment and a strong sense of camaraderie.
The Club’s focus on fostering opportunity, embracing challenges, and trusting in the process continues to drive its success both on and off the court.
At Wests, we are proud sponsors and partners of Wests Balance Netball.
As we reflect on 2024, we celebrate the incredible achievements of the players, coaches, and supporters. The Club continues to lead the way in fostering talent and elevating the standards of netball in Newcastle. We are proud of the foundation we’ve built together and remain committed to shaping the future of netball in our region.
WestsClubCricket 2024
We are delighted to spotlight the remarkable achievements of Wests Cricket Club during their 99th season of senior participation in the Newcastle District Cricket Association competition.
The Club’s success in retaining the Suburban District’s Club Championship and success of our women’s T20 team and Under 16’s, reflects the depth, quality and consistency that Wests Cricket Club brings to both men’s and women’s cricket.
At the time of writing, the club is in fantastic shape for the second half of the 2024-25 season, all Grades are in contention for the semi-finals of oneday, two day and T20 competitions and we’ve had a number of players selected for representative teams including Tom Thorpe, Pat Magann, Tighan Tosen, Koby Blight, Chris Walker, and Michael Orr whose selections in Newcastle and NSW teams are a clear indication of the high calibre of talent being developed
at the club. In addition, we have several high-level dedicated coaches involved with representative pathway teams which has been pivotal in maintaining our competitive edge.
Harker Oval continues to be the envy of cricketers in the region, preparation of Ford Oval and our practice facilities are also of a high standard and a credit to our curation team for use by all levels of cricket.
Running a club with 16 teams and over two hundred players, primarily through the efforts of volunteers, is no small feat. The Clubs’ volunteers have been instrumental in managing digital platforms, coordinating practice, developing player skills, servicing corporate partners, and running social events-essential components that sustain the day-to-day operations of the club.
Off the field, Wests Cricket Club’s engagement with the community through junior cricket skills clinics, entry-level Woolworths Cricket Blast programs, and holiday activities underscores our
commitment to fostering a love for cricket among the younger generations. Our enduring relationship with Wests Junior Club, established over three decades ago, promotes continuity, ensuring a seamless transition from junior to senior levels, thus maintaining a high retention rate.
As we look to the future, enhancing our infrastructure remains a priority to support the growth of both the Junior and Senior Clubs. Investments in new practice facilities, capital equipment, and maintenance are crucial to creating an environment that nurtures and develops talent, benefiting not only our clubs but the wider community passionate about cricket.
Congratulations to everyone at Wests Cricket Club on a successful season. We take pride in our longstanding support, spanning more than forty years, dedicated to nurturing cricket in our region.

MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE
At the heart of our member-based organisation is a deep commitment to community impact. This focus shapes our strategic decisions and unites Wests Group and the Newcastle Knights in creating lasting value across our region.
For the year ending 31 January 2025, we invested over $2.1 million in monetary and in-kind contributions—supporting grassroots sport, community groups, schools, and vital social initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to those who need them most.
Our community efforts are guided by five pillars: health, wellbeing, education, social inclusion, and grassroots sport. Across these pillars, we deliver programs, fund critical services, and partner with organisations to create meaningful outcomes for the Hunter and beyond.
This includes our work with Housing Plus and local domestic violence support services—Jenny’s Place and Carrie’s Place— to provide trauma-informed accommodation and wrap-around support. It also includes direct investment in 29 services and programs throughout 2024, delivering support to veterans, local sporting clubs, and essential social services across Lake Macquarie, Greater Newcastle, and Port Stephens. This impact is only possible thanks to the continued support of our members, whose contributions enable us to give back to the communities we all belong to.
Through the leadership of the Wests Group Board, we continue to invest in sustainable solutions that strengthen communities, create opportunity, and enhance quality of life for people throughout our region.
A new horizon for hope
Together with Housing Plus, we continue to make meaningful progress in supporting women and children escaping domestic violence through two Core and Cluster housing projects in Maitland and Lake Macquarie.
With NSW Government funding secured, the Maitland project has advanced to the procurement phase, with site preparations complete and construction set to commence. In Lake Macquarie, the project, which includes nine units, has now received Development Application approval, with construction set to commence mid-2025.
With completion expected in early 2026, these purpose-built facilities will provide not only safe and secure accommodation but also access to essential support services, including counselling, legal aid, and education. Managed by Jenny’s Place and Carrie’s Place, the projects will ensure long-term, trauma-informed care for those in need.
Wests is proud to play a role in delivering these vital initiatives, creating safer futures for women and children across the Hunter region.

WE ARE PROUD TO MARK 18 MONTHS SINCE THE LAUNCH OF OUR INNOVATE RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN
Focused on better opportunities for First Nations communities
This ongoing commitment underscores our dedication to building meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, while embedding cultural respect throughout our organisation.
Our journey over this period has seen us make significant strides in cultural engagement, including the creation of a powerful Acknowledgment to Country video, which is proudly displayed at every Knights home game. This initiative, developed with the NRL School to Work Program and local Elders, celebrates Indigenous culture and strengthens our connection to community.
We have also taken active steps to foster greater inclusivity within our organisation, implementing a Cultural Leave Policy and delivering Cultural Capability Training in partnership with
the University of Newcastle. These initiatives are designed to ensure our workforce is not only diverse but also culturally aware and supportive.
While we are proud of what we’ve achieved, there is more work to be done. In the coming months, we will focus on increasing Indigenous representation within our workforce and expanding our community engagement efforts. Together, the Newcastle Knights and Wests Group Australia remain committed to reconciliation, ensuring our initiatives continue to drive positive change for years to come.

KEEPING FAMILIES TOGETHER
Through the ClubGRANTS program, Wests Group is proud to support Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW with a $20,000 donation— helping keep families close when it matters most. This funding supports two essential spaces within John Hunter Children’s Hospital. The J1 Family Bathroom is a private, purpose-built facility used by more than 10,000 people each year, offering families a clean, calm place to refresh and reset during some of life’s most challenging times. The NICU Family Kitchen provides comfort to over 6,500 people annually in the neonatal intensive care unit, offering free snacks and drinks that ease financial stress while creating a space for connection and care.
Every $1 invested in these initiatives generates $3.60 in social and economic value, highlighting the real and lasting impact of supporting families through practical and emotional assistance. At Wests, we’re honoured to contribute to projects that bring relief, dignity, and a sense of home to families when they need it most.

SUPPORTING SAFE HAVENS
The Wests Group, through the ClubGRANTs program, is honoured to support Jenny’s Place with a $30,000 donation. Jenny’s Place, a vital domestic violence support service in Newcastle, operates two crisis accommodation refuges and has a third under construction. Clients typically stay 14-18 weeks before transitioning to longer-term housing. Our contribution will help Jenny’s Place update bedroom furniture in their existing refuges, improving comfort and security for women and children escaping violence.
Domestic and family violence is unfortunately on the rise in our region, making the services provided by Jenny’s Place more critical than ever. We hope that this donation will enhance the safe and welcoming environment that Jenny’s Place offers, giving mothers and children the peace and comfort they need to recover from trauma and rebuild their lives. We are grateful for the opportunity to support such a vital cause in our community.
CREATING SAFE, WELCOMING SPACES
HELPING VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES
The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal is a lifeline for many in our community, funding essential social services that address local needs. Through the ClubGRANTs initiative, the Wests Group is proud to contribute $25,000 to support this vital cause.
The Red Shield Appeal Official Launch, a corporate luncheon, engages the Hunter’s business community to raise awareness and funds for these critical services. The funds raised through the appeal, including the luncheon, support a range of programs in the Hunter region. These include drug and alcohol rehabilitation, financial counselling, homelessness services, Oasis youth services, and community programs offering support, meals, and social connections.
Each of these services plays a crucial role in helping vulnerable individuals navigate and overcome significant challenges, providing pathways to counselling, employment, and crisis care. We are proud to support the Salvation Army’s efforts to empower individuals to live positive, fulfilling lives.

EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS YOUTH
Cultural Choice Association’s Boots for Brighter Futures (BFBF) program is a vital initiative for Aboriginal youth, addressing mental health, suicide prevention, and cultural identity. We are proud to contribute $20,000 through the ClubGRANTs initiative to support this program.
Designed for indigenous youth aged 14-18, BFBF offers six structured sessions covering suicide awareness, self-care, resilience, Elder-led education, and art. This funding will support students in Newcastle schools, sports camps, hostels, and the community.
The program is facilitated by trained young Aboriginal leaders and has shown success in improving student behaviour, attendance, and engagement. As part of BFBF, students paint NRL players’ boots for the Indigenous Round, promoting cultural pride and awareness.
Our contribution will fund facilitators, Elders, and program materials, helping to create a brighter future for Indigenous youth.

SUPPORTING WOMEN IN CRISES
Got Your Back Sista’s ‘One-on-One Domestic Violence Support’ program is crucial in providing vital assistance to women experiencing domestic violence. The Wests Group, through the ClubGRANTs initiative, is proud to contribute $15,000 to expand this essential service.
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue, affecting one in four Australian women and driving many into poverty. Got Your Back Sista has seen a significant increase in women seeking help, often traumatised and unsure of where to start. The program offers practical help, including legal, housing, and crisis support, as well as emotional support through the recovery journey.
Our funding will help an additional 35 women in the Newcastle area access these vital services. With qualified caseworkers providing risk assessment, safety planning, counselling, and advocacy, the program empowers women to rebuild their lives. This support is a step toward breaking the cycle of domestic violence and fostering a safer community.
ENHANCING CANCER TREATMENT COMFORT
The Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital Auxiliary aims to enhance patient care by purchasing a second Paxman scalp cooling machine for the Day Treatment Centre, supported by a $30,000 donation from the Wests Group through the ClubGRANTs initiative. This advanced technology helps patients undergoing chemotherapy, such as breast cancer treatment, to retain their hair, reducing the emotional and psychological distress associated with hair loss.
Scalp cooling works by lowering the scalp’s temperature before, during, and after chemotherapy, minimising blood flow to hair follicles and reducing hair loss. Patients wear a cooling cap connected to a machine for several hours, significantly alleviating the most feared side effect of chemotherapy.
Currently, the hospital’s single machine can treat two patients at a time, allowing only two patients per day to benefit from scalp cooling therapy. With the addition of a second machine, four patients per day will have access to this empowering option, giving them more control over their treatment journey.
LIFTING LIVES IN NEWCASTLE
Established in 2003, Soul Hub supports Newcastle’s poor, vulnerable, and those in need. As the number of disadvantaged individuals continues to rise, the demand for Soul Hub’s services has never been greater. In 2024 alone, the organisation provided 71,995 free meals and 7,979 grocery hampers to people facing homelessness, addiction, poverty, and more.
Soul Hub’s mission goes beyond providing food. The team works to uplift individuals by connecting them with vital services including substance abuse support, accommodation pathways, social work, Centrelink referrals, laundry facilities, and free medical care. This wraparound support helps guests address underlying challenges and take steps toward reintegrating into society.
The Wests Group, through the ClubGRANTS initiative, is proud to support Soul Hub with an $85,000 donation. This contribution will help sustain the delivery of meals and essential services, promoting greater safety, health, and purpose for some of the most vulnerable members of our community
EDUCATING AND ENGAGING COMMUNITIES
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service is dedicated to enhancing community safety and education through their Mobile Community Education Program. This initiative involves acquiring and customising a commercial vehicle to serve as a mobile educational hub, informing and educating young people aged 6-13 through a tailored program.
With the help of a $63,000 donation from the Wests Group through the ClubGRANTs initiative, the program will include school visits, community events, and fundraising activities. The vehicle will be equipped with PA/AV equipment, VR technology, educational materials, and event infrastructure to deliver impactful educational sessions on topics such as road safety, water safety, bushwalking preparedness, and emergency response.
This project aims to deepen the community’s understanding of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s vital role in emergency response while fostering long-term support and advocacy. By bringing these essential lessons directly to schools and communities, the program will help equip young people with the knowledge they need to stay safe and respond effectively in emergencies.

FIGHTING HUNGER SUSTAINABLY
OzHarvest is ‘Nourishing our Country’ by rescuing good food and delivering it to those who need it most—preventing waste and fighting hunger at the same time. In Newcastle, OzHarvest supports 30 local charities with free daily food deliveries using a fleet of three iconic yellow vans. Operating year-round, their food rescue service reaches communities across 18 local suburbs, ensuring that nutritious food makes its way to people doing it tough.
As food insecurity continues to rise, 75% of the charities supported by OzHarvest report a growing demand. Without their service, many vulnerable individuals and families would go without. In 2024, OzHarvest delivered more than 2.6 million meals across the greater Newcastle region—and they’re aiming even higher in 2025.
The Wests Group, through the ClubGRANTS initiative, is proud to contribute $18,000 to support this vital work. Our funding will help OzHarvest deliver an additional 36,000 meals to people in need in our community.
BRINGING SMILES TO SICK CHILDREN
The Clown Doctors program at John Hunter Children’s Hospital delivers humour therapy to brighten the lives of sick children and their families. With an $18,650 donation from Wests Group through the ClubGRANTS initiative, the Clown Doctors visit the hospital one day each week, working alongside medical staff to support the physiological and psychological needs of young patients.
These visits bring more than just laughter. Clown Doctors help distract frightened children during procedures, empower longterm patients, and offer emotional relief to anxious parents. They also support healthcare staff, contributing to a more positive and uplifting hospital environment.
The benefits of this program span cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. Through laughter, music, play, and drawing, Clown Doctors connect with children from all walks of life, transcending cultural backgrounds and bringing joy during challenging times.
Each year, approximately 4,200 children from the City of Newcastle are admitted to John Hunter Children’s Hospital. The Clown Doctors’ playful presence helps reduce anxiety, foster a sense of community, and make hospital stays just a little bit easier for children and their families.
SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS
The Wests Group, through the ClubGRANTs initiative, proudly supports the Prostate Survival Alliance with a $10,000 donation. This alliance provides free information and counselling services to locals affected by prostate cancer, including high-risk men, advanced stage patients, newly diagnosed individuals, and their families.
In the Hunter Region, prostate cancer has the highest mortality rate in NSW at 43%. Our support has helped reduce this rate to 37%. Prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in males and the second leading cause of male mortality. Early detection through PSA blood tests and proper treatment are crucial, raising the 5-year survival rate to 95%.
Our donation helps provide essential counselling, promote early diagnosis, and raise awareness through community events and workplace presentations.
BUILDING FUTURES FOR INDIGENOUS YOUTH
The Clontarf Foundation empowers young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men by enhancing education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem, and employment opportunities.
The Wests Group, through the ClubGRANTS initiative, proudly supports this mission with a $10,000 donation to the Toronto Clontarf Academy in the Lake Macquarie LGA.
Established in 2019, the academy currently supports 98 young men through mentoring, behavioural coaching, and lifestyle guidance. The program features fitness sessions, community volunteering, employment
forums, and dedicated homework groups. In addition, the academy delivers 715 health checks and provides healthy meals to promote wellbeing and encourage positive habits.
This support helps young men build essential life skills, grow in confidence, and become positive role models in their schools and communities. The impact of the Clontarf program reaches far beyond its participants—strengthening the broader school community and contributing to longterm social change across the region.

KNIGHTS AND HJRL PARTNERSHIP
The Newcastle Knights have established a historic partnership with Hunter Junior Rugby League (HJRL), marking a significant milestone in our commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting the sport at the grassroots level.

It was a day filled with energy, teamwork, and the spirit of giving— showcasing the power of community to make a real difference.
