$183,000

COAST RESIDENTS ON QUEEN’S HONOUR LIST

Three talented USC postgraduate students have been given a financial boost thanks to the Rotary University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund. The fund is provided for by all 16 Rotary Clubs on the Sunshine Coast and supports three $4000 Rotary Postgraduate Scholarships each year. USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill says there has been more than 50 scholarships awarded since 2001, supported by more than $183,000 raised by Sunshine Coast Rotarians. Brittany Elliot and Elin Pollanen received academic scholarships and Kate Ballard received the Research and Innovation scholarship.

GIVE ME 5 FUNDRAISER A number of Sunshine Coast residents have been named in the Queen’s Birthday 2019 Honours List, receiving Order of Australia medals (OAM) for service in their respective industries. Among them is hockey stalwart Adell Parkyn, conservation and environmental expert Eric Anderson, community volunteer David Devers, Alliance Airlines co-founder Steve Padgett (pictured), reverend Barbara Bailey and Australian Trucking Association co-founder and former National Party of Queensland president Bruce McIver. The late Janice Cameron was awarded posthumously for her service to swimming, particularly as a coach. The Order of Australia (AM) was awarded to Dr William Sultmann for significant service to education and community, and to Emeritus Professor Richard Fotheringham for significant service to higher education and to the performing arts. Glass House Mountains SES team leader Lou Spann has been recognised as part of the State Government’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The 92.7 Mix FM team was out and about in the community last week for the annual Cash Clean Up event to raise funds for Give Me 5 For Kids. Mark Darin and Todd Widdicombe teamed up to take on Caroline Hutchinson and Samille Muirhead to find out who could raise the biggest amount in one day. The two teams were able to raise a combined $85,603 thanks to the generosity of the local business owners and Coast residents on the day. Give Me 5 events continue, see story on page 22 for more details. Give Me 5 For Kids is proudly sponsored by My Weekly Preview.

FOOD AND AGRIBUSINESS SECTOR TO FLY HIGH Sunshine Coast Airport has signed a sponsorship agreement with the Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) with the aim of boosting food exports from the region to national and international markets. FAN is a leading Australian food and agribusiness cluster, supporting the growth of the industry across the Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Noosa and Moreton Bay. The Sunshine Coast’s food industry is valued at $750 million annually and this is expected to reach $1 billion by 2022. The region’s food industry is forecast to be among the chief benefactors from the launch of a new extended runway in 2020.
