From the editor

Seventeen rallies were held across the country last weekend, with tens-ofthousands of Australians calling on governments to do more to prevent domestic and family violence.

It’s a clear sign that there is a long way to go when it comes to protecting our most vulnerable, with staggering new statistics revealing one woman is being killed every four days due to domestic violence.

May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. It’s an opportunity to encourage open conversations around this national issue and start removing the stigmas so we can work towards a solution.

I caught up with two local advocates who are making a huge difference to the lives of those affected by domestic and family violence. Turn to page 10 to read the full story.

QUEENSLAND’S THIN BLUE LINE THICKENS IN NUMBERS

The state government has boosted police numbers following a massive recruitment campaign and other incentives.

Queensland policing stock is set to be boosted by an additional 900 officers as the state government continues its crackdown on crime.

The government recently announced that 500 extra sworn officers and 400 unsworn officers would be added to the police service.

It comes on top of nearly 700 recruits undergoing training and more than 2000

applicants in the pipeline, following a domestic and international advertising campaign.

Pay conditions, annual leave and the attractiveness of Queensland’s lifestyle were pitched in the largest-ever recruitment campaign by the state’s police in 2023.

Advertising on television, social media and billboards backed up more recently announced incentives for

police graduates with a tertiary degree in criminology, social work or relevant human services to potentially shave $20,000 off their HECS debt.

The recruitment campaign was triggered by plateauing hires and looming retirements across the state.

Retired and former police officers over the mandatory retirement age of 60 had also been invited back to the frontline under a category of ‘special constable’ in 2023 to help ease staffing pressures.

In the 2020 election campaign, then-premier Annastacia Palaszczuk promised 2025 additional police officers by 2025 in light of projections indicating 850 officers will depart the force by 2026.

There has been more than 217 officers join the force in 2024 and the government says it leads Australia in police recruitment.

“We’ll throw everything at preventing and disrupting crime,” Premier Steven Miles says.

“That starts with having more police than ever before patrolling the streets of Queensland.”

Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski, who was sworn in last month, says the new personnel will ‘future proof’ the service and help keep pace with a growing population.

“Additional resources will assist us in our commitment in keeping the community safe and ensuring they feel safe,” he says.

“Despite the recruiting challenges being experienced in policing jurisdictions across Australia, the QPS (Queensland Police Service) is continuing to see a healthy pipeline of police recruit applicants.”

THE PRICE WE PAY FOR KEEPING OUR

PETS ALIVE

Australian pet owners would fork out an eye-watering amount before considering putting their pet down, new research shows.

A Finder survey of 1061 respondents – 602 of whom are pet owners – revealed that 94 per cent would spend money on their pet before considering other options.

Of the Australians willing to spend, the average amount they would fork out is $6219 to save their furry friend.

Almost one in four (23 per cent) would spend up to $500, while 17 per cent would spend between $501 and $1000.

A third (34 per cent) would spend between $1001 and $5000 to save their companion.

More than one in 10 (12 per cent) would hand over between $5001 and $10,000 to save their pet’s life, while a whopping eight per cent – equivalent to 925,000 people – would spend beyond $10,000 to prevent euthanasia.

Finder’s research found six per cent wouldn’t pay a cent on their dog or cat in the event they were sick or injured before considering putting them down. That’s equivalent to almost 770,000 people who wouldn’t go as far as a vet visit.

On average, pet owners report spending $826 at the vet in the past 12 months – up from $609 in 2023.

We all remember a crazy food fight we did as kids or saw on the screen. But did you know Spain has the world’s biggest food fight once a year. The La Tomatina tradition began in 1945, when a food fight broke out in a parade at a town square. From the name itself, the festival had people throwing tomatoes at each other.

La Tomatina was banned in the early 1950s. However, after a somewhat comical protest involving citizens carrying a huge tomato in a coffin, the festival was allowed to be held again.

We must hear their voices

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month this year highlights the national shame of statistics that represent the murders taking place behind closed doors, in backyards and on our streets.

Words: Ingrid Nelson.

It used to be one woman a week. In 2024, so far, one Australian woman has been violently killed every four days. Every. Four. Days.

It’s a sobering and shocking statistic and it has to stop. Now, more than ever, we need to stand united to send a clear message that violence in our communities will not be tolerated.

May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month – a time dedicated to raising awareness, promoting prevention and supporting victims of domestic and family violence.

Throughout the month, local organisations, support groups and government agencies come together to organise a series of events aimed at educating the public about the signs of domestic and family violence (DFV) and the resources available for those in need.

The Sunshine Coast’s annual Candlelight Vigil and March at Cotton Tree Park was held this week, with hundreds of locals joining as one to show their support. This year’s theme was: “Hear Their Voices – Speak up for Women and Children”.

Centacare Maroochydore, which provides domestic and family violence counselling and support services, is led by area manager Adam Beck who says: “This is a human rights issue: the right of victims to live a life free of violence and coercion and for children to grow up in homes where they feel safe, supported and valued.

“Women are three-times more likely

to experience violence at the hands of someone they know.

“Whilst these figures are disturbing, the federal and state governments are committed to ending domestic violence within a generation and by joining us, you can learn more about this issue and help make this goal a reality.”

Mr Beck says Centacare works closely with women and children who are exposed to violence in the home, which in

turn can have significant long-term impacts on their development, relationships and academic outcomes.

Sunshine Coast Lightning DFV prevention ambassador Tara Hinchliffe says violence is never okay and should never be tolerated.

“Our Sunshine Coast Lightning team and I are proud to be taking a stand against domestic and family violence,” Ms Hinchliffe says.

“We stand with the victims and against all forms of abuse.”

Council representatives will be handing out commemorative purple ribbons for DFV Prevention Month at the Sunshine Coast Lightning vs Melbourne Mavericks game on Saturday, May 4.

As someone who has experienced firsthand the cycle of abuse in her own childhood, and as an adult in a violent relationship, Sunshine Coast trauma counsellor, author and speaker, Janelle Parsons says growing up in an environment where trauma and violence are normalised can have profound and lasting effects on young minds.

Having now broken free of that cycle, Ms Parsons also knows the transformative power of intervention and prevention and is passionate about teaching others to do the same through her recently launched charity organisation Rise & Thrive Co Ltd.

“Rise & Thrive is focused on breaking the cycle of intergenerational abuse, dismantling the stigmas around domestic

Janelle Parsons

violence and supporting everyone through their unique recovery journey,” Ms Parsons says.

“As a mother of two teenagers, I understand the profound importance of overcoming the cycle of domestic violence, as I didn’t want to pass on the unwanted legacy of trauma that I experienced through childhood and adulthood. By identifying not only what I needed but what hundreds of others I’ve spoken to were looking for, I developed a program around prevention and intervention.

“So often, as a victim of abuse or trauma, it becomes a cycle. It becomes normalised. I want to help people recognise that it is not normal behaviour.

“It’s about giving people the life tools that can help them unlearn that cycle that has been created or prevent it from starting.”

Ms Parsons says Domestic Violence Prevention Month is so important to help encourage open conversations and allow people to have a voice and feel safe.

“There needs to be action taken. There needs to be a change in the community, otherwise in 10 years’ time, we are still going to be having this conversation.”

DV Safe Phone CEO Ashton Wood went from being a bystander to forming a national charity which helps women escape domestic violence.

It was all the result of a conversation with an ex-police senior sergeant.

A Sunshine Coast local, Mr Wood had a car loaded with household items to donate to charity, but overnight Queensland went into COVID lockdown and he had nowhere to take them.

Among his family’s discarded possessions were disused mobile phones. Mr Wood called his police contact, Janine, to ask where he could unload his goods, but he was shocked by what she said next.

“Ashton, those phones could save a life if I could have them,” she told him.

“We can have the best safety and escape plan in place for a survivor, but quite often their phone is tracked, monitored or taken from them and they literally cannot call us for help.”

This technology-based abuse and surveillance is another form of coercive control.

Four years on, the Sunshine Coastbased charity has fixed and donated 8000 mobile phones (complete with SIM

“We are sending out 100 phones a week. In November, we sent out 395 phones. The demand just keeps growing”
Ashton Wood

cards, credit and charger) to 361 domestic violence agencies, safe houses, hospitals and police stations, which it partners with nationally.

DV Safe Phone has 840 mobile phone collection points Australia-wide.

So far, it has received 23,000 phones.

It accepts phones in any condition but the better a phone works, the quicker the charity can get it into the hands of someone who really needs it.

“We are currently sending out 100 phones a week,” Mr Wood says.

“In November last year, we sent out 395 phones.

“The demand just keeps growing.

“If anyone is looking to support a local grassroots charity where the dollars go directly to saving lives, then we would love their financial support to keep the doors open.”

Phones that can’t be repaired are donated to Mobile Muster, which destroys them and makes sure they’re recycled properly – shredded and used for parts.

“So far, we have diverted two tonnes of phones from landfill by giving them to survivors or giving them to Mobile Muster to recycle,” Mr Wood says.

Anyone who needs a phone can visit dvsafephone.org and find the nearest agency on its map, including SunnyKids here on the Coast.

The website also includes another map showing 800 locations where people can drop off their old mobile phones.

MAKE A PLEDGE TO KEEP OTHERS SAFE ON ROADS

One grieving family’s love for their lost daughter is behind our National Road Safety Week campaign. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

National Road Safety Week (NRSW) is upon us. This is a campaign designed to raise awareness about road safety issues, highlight the impact of accident trauma, and how we can create a safer environment for all.

Running from May 5 to 12, the week asks the community to make a pledge to: “Drive so others survive”.

A total of 87 people have died on Queensland roads so far in 2024, with seven of those in the North Coast region that includes the Sunshine Coast.

Data from the Department of Transport and Main Roads reveals 16 more fatalities

(or 22.5 per cent) between January 1 and April 21 this year than for the same period the previous year. The toll is 13 lives (or 17.9 per cent) greater than the previous five-year average for the same period.

Across Australia, it is estimated 1200 people lose their lives and another 44,000 are seriously injured on the country’s roads. So far, in the 12 months to March 31, Australia has recorded 1286 deaths: an 8.2 per cent increase (up from 1188).

NRSW is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering with road safety organisations and government.

Founder Peter Frazer began the

initiative after losing his daughter Sarah in an avoidable crash on the Hume Highway in NSW in 2012.

His daughter had pulled over when the radiator in her car blew. A tow truck driver was on the scene assisting her. Both were killed by a distracted driver.

Wanting to do something in Sarah’s memory, the family began campaigning for road safety.

“Everyone has a right to get home safe to their loved ones, every day without exceptions,” Mr Frazer says.

“I’m just a grieving dad who’s trying to make a difference so that other families don’t have to go through what my family suffers every single day.

“We created Road Safety Week in 2012, which became National Road Safety Week the following year.

“We need to take that shared responsibility and say we’re going to actively look after all those on the road ahead.”

Mr Frazer says so many crashes around Australia are a result of drivers “not doing the right thing” with distraction, speed, fatigue and driving under the influence continuing to play a major role in fatalities.

“If we take some really basic actions, then we can get everyone home safe,” Mr Frazer says.

“Since my own beautiful daughter died, more than 13,000 Australians have been killed and more than 400,000 have been seriously injured.

“We’ve got to start doing something about this, and National Road Safety Week is one of the mechanisms that can bring to attention why we need to actively look after each other.

“When you see yellow ribbon stickers on the back of vehicle, let’s pledge to do the right thing.”

More than 6000 Australians have

already pledged to NRSW, which is themed around driving as if loved ones are on the road ahead.

Drivers pledge to remove distractions and never use a mobile phone when driving, and not put other people at risk by speeding, driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

NRSW also includes daily themes which encourage people to think about road safety and how they can ensure they arrive at their destination safely.

During the week, residents are encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon in support of those who are impacted by road crashes.

Visit roadsafetyweek.com.au for more information and to make a pledge.

2024 NRSW DAILY THEMES

• May 5: Remember the 1200 Australian lives lost each year.

• May 6: Make your road safety pledge.

• May 7: Road safety for young drivers and the next generation.

• May 8: How we can protect those who protect and assist us (for example, roadside assistance).

• May 9: How safe is my ride? Putting an emphasis on regularly servicing your vehicle.

• May 10: Avoiding driver distraction.

• May 11: Share the street – being safe around all road users.

BRAVERY MEDAL AMONG HOST OF AWARDS PRESENTED TO OFFICERS

More than 155 police officers from around the region have been recognised for their service to the Sunshine Coast community.

A medal and awards ceremony was held on the Sunshine Coast on April 24, presenting the National Medal, National Police Service Medal, District Officer Certificate, Assistant Commissioner Certificate, Valour Medal and Exemplary Medal.

Queensland Police Service Medal clasps honouring 15 to 35 years of service also were handed out, recognising ongoing service to the force.

The ceremony included the presentation of one of the force’s top honours: the bravery award.

The Bravery Medal was awarded to Senior Constable Tim Jessup, from Beerwah Station.

Senior Constable Jessup was recognised for his efforts in responding to a fire in a residential unit complex in Earlville on September 26, 2018, while stationed in Cairns.

While responding to the incident with his partner, Sergeant Wesley Von Eitzen, Senior Constable Jessup noticed smoke coming from a building and forced entry by kicking in the solid timber door.

The officers entered the smoke-filled building and searched the unit on their hands and knees while yelling loudly to look for anyone inside.

Once the officers confirmed no one was inside, they worked to evacuate residents from surrounding units in the complex. Senior Constable Jessup then used a nearby garden hose to help contain the fire, alongside other officers on the scene, until firefighters arrived and subsequently extinguished the fire.

Thanks to the immediate and brave actions of Senior Constable Jessup and his colleagues, the fire was contained to only one unit within the complex, without any injuries.

Senior Constable Jessup says he’s humbled to receive the medal.

“I’d like to acknowledge and share this with my Far Northern colleagues who I worked with at the time of this incident,” Senior Constable Jessup says.

“I’ll always appreciate the tremendous cohesiveness and capabilities of the people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. Responding to jobs like the Earlville fire relies on seamless teamwork so I thank everyone who was part of the response.”

A group of officers also was recognised for their response to a stabbing incident at Coolum Beach in 2013.

Valour Awards were presented to Senior Constable Evan Condon and Senior Constable Jason Jupp, and Assistant Commissioner Certificates were presented to Sergeant Craig Law and Senior Constable Malcolm Teissl.

District Officer Superintendent Craig Hawkins says he’s honoured to work alongside the officers recognised.

RATTLING THE BUCKET TO HELP GROWING NEED

The Red Shield Appeal needs our dollars as fellow Sunshine Coast residents seek the help of The Salvos in greater numbers.

The Sunshine Coast community is being encouraged to be involved in a long-running fundraiser that will support the region’s most-vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $38 million across the country for the 60th

year of the Red Shield Appeal.

The Salvos’ Simon Gregory says many residents need help, with more coming forward seeking support from the organisation every week. All funds raised locally will remain in the community, allowing the Salvos to meet the specific needs of the most-disadvantaged and

A WEEK CELEBRATING OUR FOSTER CARERS

About 1100 Sunshine Coast youngsters are in the child protection system, but others desperately need us to step up and play a part.

Every child deserves the opportunity to be raised in a safe environment where they can reach their full potential. The reality is that not all children get this chance.

Whether it’s due to experiencing abuse or neglect, family violence, a parent who is alcohol or drug dependent or other various reasons, some children are unable

to stay in the family home. Foster care can make a life-changing difference to the lives of these vulnerable children in desperate need of stability, safety and support.

By the end of 2023, about 1100 Sunshine Coast children and young people were under the protection of the Queensland Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women. This figure is made all

the more disturbing because these numbers will never remain static or decrease, due in part to the upsurge in drug usage and alcoholism among many Australian families.

IFYS foster and kinship care area manager Shannon Davis says that belonging is fundamental to the human experience and we all have an essential need to be loved, cared for and belong.

“When a child is brought into care, they can be confused, scared and unsure of what the future holds,” she says.

“They can feel that they don’t belong.

“With this growing number of children entering care, every day it is a battle to help each child find a safe and secure place to shelter while the family recovers, or assist them as they start afresh, putting down new, life sustaining roots and, in many cases, learn that the world can be a loving, affirming place full of realisable hopes and dreams.”

Foster and Kinship Carer Week runs from May 4–11 this year.

During this week, Queensland says thanks to more than 6000 foster and kinship carer families for their dedication and commitment.

They are thanked for opening their hearts and homes to children and young people in need.

The week is an opportunity for

everyone to acknowledge the valuable role carers play in our communities.

While Foster and Kinship Carer Week is about honouring the work of foster carers, it also acts as an important reminder that children are in need of desperate support and we, as a community, need more foster carers to stand up and be counted.

“Our hope is that every time someone sees our ads or branding, it will remind them that the Sunshine Coast needs more carers. Maybe it will be their inspiration to step up or perhaps they know someone who might have been thinking about taking that first step towards becoming a carer,” Ms Davis says.

“To achieve this end, many more dedicated carers are required across the Sunshine Coast and IFYS Foster Care needs a minimum of 20 new carers this year. IFYS Foster Care is constantly reaching out to the community to find new families and individuals to step up to the mark, raise their hands and say, ‘I am willing to play my part’.

‘’Whatever the outcome, at least you will have played a pivotal role in assisting our children and young people under the care of the child protection system.”

If you have ever thought about helping a child reach their full potential, find out more at fostercare.com.au.

FROM THE MAYOR

Hello everyone,

During May, we’re asking our community to support Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month on our Sunshine Coast.

Please join us, as we take a stand and show our support to end all forms of violence.

This year’s theme is: “Hear Their Voices – Speak Up for Women and Children”.

Help us to hear their voices and speak up for women and children in our region by wearing your purple ribbon and showing your support.

Our community can join Sunshine Coast Libraries between May 2 and 14 for seven One Billon Stars paper starweaving workshops.

One Billion Stars encourages communities around the world to weave stars as symbols of hope, courage and solidarity to end all forms of violence.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic and family violence, please access support services, including 1800RESPECT – 24/7 DFV and sexual assault counselling (phone 1800 737 732).

For more information about events and resources for Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, visit Council’s website. There is no place for violence on our Sunshine Coast.

Game on! Best parks for honing sporting skills

Get out and about for fun, fitness and practise at a host of courts and grassy fields around the region.

Winter sports are in full swing and we’ve compiled a list of Sunshine Coast Council parks that are accessible and free to little sporting legends looking to improve their skills.

Our parks play a key role in supporting and encouraging the local community to engage in sports and outdoor activities.

Whether it’s basketball, footy, netball, soccer or table tennis, there are endless possibilities to discover at our local parks.

Here are some local favourite parks for winter sports:

Aroona Park, Aroona – with a massive 2.8 hectares and impressive facilities, Aroona Park is a great place for active kids. This neighbourhood park offers basketball and netball half-courts, multi-sports field goals and a cricket pitch, all nicely spaced.

Des Scanlan Park, Cotton Tree –located in the heart of Cotton Tree, this park offers two basketball half-courts, a modified netball court, table tennis tables and a large grassy area – perfect for kicking and throwing a ball around.

Peregian Ridges Sports Complex, Peregian Springs – loved by locals, this hidden gem offers more than meets the

eye. This complex has impressive facilities for kids wanting to improve their ball skills or burn some energy at the skate park.

Spitfire Banks Drive Park, Pelican Waters – kick things up a notch at this large park and sports field with its spacious courts for netball and basketball, plus a bocce court or build strength with the exercise equipment.

Take to the large field and aim straight for the goals that are ideal for AFL, rugby and football practise.

Discover more of the Sunshine Coast’s parks via the Beaches and Parks Directory on Council’s website.

about-place / about-face

Curated by writer and artist, Kevin Wilson, this exhibition takes a very different viewpoint on the concept of ‘natural place’. It works from the assumption that our perspective and understanding of ‘natural place’ is imbued with our own lived experience. In a sense, when we look at a place, we inevitably look in a mirror at ourselves.

Fabulous new clubhouse for ultimate family football club

Hinterland’s ‘Home of the Reds’ reaches new milestone in proud history as winter season rolls in.

Two local multi-generational footy families are celebrating the huge refurbishment of their much-loved hinterland football club facilities.

The ‘Home of the Reds’ – catering for 350 players, aged 5 to 70 – is enjoying a new lease of life, thanks to a $1.7 million club upgrade, which has now been completed.

Proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council, the new Nambour-Yandina United (NYU) Football Club facility will be a boost for the football club and also the weekend Yandina Community Markets, which it hosts.

It’s a welcomed improvement to their

local football club for the Harths and the O’Keefes: two proud Reds footy families.

NYU was formed in 1997, bringing together two great earlier clubs, the Nambour Reds (founded in 1974) and the Yandina Eagles (founded in 1976).

The upgrade includes new public amenities, four new changerooms, improved access for all abilities, a separate area for umpires and a first-aid room.

The refurbished clubhouse also boasts a new club administration office and uniform store which supports the

renovated clubrooms.

Council provided more than $1 million funding and proudly partnered with the Australian Government, which contributed $400,000 through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and the Queensland Government, which provided $204,000 towards upgrading the clubrooms for the Nambour-Yandina United Football Club.

The Nambour-Yandina United Football Club also contributed $33,000 to support the project.

HUNDREDS SET TO GET IN THE SWIM FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

Now in its eighth year, a charity swim that invites competitors to don their wetsuits and brave the water for a worthy cause is readying for race day.

The Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland and Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club are collaborating again for the annual Winter Solstice Swim.

Over the years, the event has raised more than $150,000 to support local causes, attracting significant interest from the community with several hundred swimmers taking part.

This year, the event aims to raise $40,000 for Sunshine Coast charities, with IFYS’s Inclusive Kids program to be the primary beneficiary.

“We support the Sunshine Coast

Inclusive Kids program because they provide programs for youth homelessness, foster care and youth development areas which are very much in need of support,” Alex Rotary Club director John Malloy says.

The swim gives competitors the chance to pick their swim distance – one, three or five kilometres – and is open to people aged 14 years and over.

Spectators are encouraged to head along on the day and cheer on the swimmers. Raffle tickets are available to further support the cause.

The event will take place on June 23 at Alexandra Headland beach.

Visit alexrotary.com.au for information on registering.

You would not think it from the hysteria and scuttlebutt, but there is far less crime being committed in Queensland now than there was 20 years ago.

CRIME AND PREJUDICE FASHION WITH A TOUCH OF SPICE

Jane Stephens offers some perspective on crime statistics for the Sunshine Coast but fears scaremongering is skewing reality.

generally is nearly three-times worse than four years ago, most violence is committed by family or friends – only 30 per cent by a stranger – and most by men aged 30-39.

IIt might be hard to believe, but it is true: the latest figures from the Queensland Crime Report show that where criminal activity is concerned, the facts and broadly accepted perceptions just don’t marry up.

Fear twists minds to change our behaviour, so surely it is prudent to seek real information before we cower and fret.

The stats from 2022-23, released recently, make for fascinating reading. While there are perceptions of a ‘youth crime wave’, young offending fell 26.7 per cent over nine years – and that takes into account our population boom.

However, once the wayward young ones have committed a crime, they are more likely to reoffend, with many becoming what the report calls ‘hardcore recidivists’. There might be fewer rotten apples, but they are worse than the bad ones before and spoil the whole barrel.

Perceptions are wrong about dark, young strangers putting us at risk, too. While the rate of assaults in Queensland

The best news is hiding among the columns and tables in the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office document: the Sunshine Coast shines and swims against the tide, with figures showing we live in a purple patch of safety in the state.

On the Coast, offences against people fell seven per cent on the year before, and offences against property fell by two per cent on the decade before. Other regions were not so lucky. We had fewer homicides and assaults than the year before, even though assaults skyrocketed in the state overall. Sexual offences dropped like a rock: down a third on the year before. All robbery and drugs categories were well down in our patch of paradise. And while stalking, unlawful entry and life-endangering acts were up in the latest data drop, the stats show the Sunshine Coast is a not favoured by the criminal classes.

While anyone who has been a victim will tell you that a single criminal act is one too many, it is important to celebrate the safe-ish, calm-ish reality.

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

Sami Muirhead realises the trend towards sheer fabrics might suit the posh and celebrated, but she won’t be wearing see-through outfits any time soon.

t felt like 1987 this week. Did you see The Spice Girls reunited for the party of the year? Posh and her pout looked a million bucks and showed us all how to celebrate a birthday.

It has been 12 years since Baby, Posh, Sporty, Ginger and Scary Spice performed briefly at the London Olympics ceremony.

It took Victoria Beckham to celebrate her 50th birthday to bring the band back together to belt out Stop

Who would have thought all these decades later that seeing five women together would bring me so much joy. But it did. No one celebrates a milestone birthday quite the way a woman does who believes she is ageing well.

And Victoria is like a vampire: she does not age.

Posh has the hot husband in David Beckham, the celebrity girl gang of friends, seems super close with her adult children, shows her clothing line at Paris Week every year and has a sense of humour that is bitingly sharp.

And she still has a waistline. I lost mine somewhere along the line.

Victoria’s only flaw is that some

of her clothing designs are made with sheer fabrics. Indeed, her gown for her big birthday bash was sheer fabric: a palegreen, wispy, flowing gown that showed her skinny legs and ample bosom.

This trend is growing at an alarming rate and all the hot beautiful people are going out in their Skims underwear and basically throwing a fly screen over the top. It makes me very uncomfortable.

Personally, the thicker the fabric, the more I love it to cover up my lumps and bumps.

If I could wear a tarp out to dinner, I would be a happy girl. A couch slipcover would also suffice.

Just when we thought clothing could not be more revealing thanks to G-strings, cut-outs, the under boob trend and plunging necklines, along comes the sheer fabric trend.

I hope it passes quickly because nothing is more unflattering than wearing your knickers out to the pub with a fishing net thrown over the top.

But happy 50th birthday Posh Spice and thanks for the trip down memory lane.

TYLER WANTS A BIGGER SLICE OF MUSIC PIE

Our talented homegrown Australian Idol contestant is making plans to continue his musical journey with a new single and national tour.

One of the Sunshine Coast’s brightest talents, Tyler Hammill, made it to the top 12 of popular TV show

Australian Idol. We caught up with Tyler to discover more about his incredible journey so far and what his plans are for the future.

Where did you grow up? – I grew up living at the Cotton Tree Holiday Park. My family and I ran the establishment

for close to 20 years. It was an amazing and unforgettable childhood living in such a beautiful place.

When did you discover you had a talent for singing? – I properly started singing when I was 11 years old.

Myself and my two cousins would get picked up by grandma and she would take us to choir once a week. I grew a love for singing there.

Step away from the kitchen and let us do the hard work this

Do you come from a musical family?

– Oddly enough, I do not come from a musical family. My grandfather did sing but never professionally. He was always just an around-the-house singer.

What was your experience like on Australian Idol? – To be the ninth contestant to leave Australian Idol was definitely a big surprise for me. I had no expectations walking into the show. I just wanted to have fun and showcase who I am as an artist. It was surreal to make it as far as I did.

What made you apply for Australian Idol?

– I received a DM (direct message)from the Australian Idol Instagram page. They asked me if I wanted to give it a shot and I ended up doing it and it led to some crazy experiences.

What was the audition experience like? – I did a zoom call with the producers and music team and there were some back-and-forth emails and then I flew down to the Sydney Cricket Ground and did my in-person audition.

How difficult is it to make a break in the Australian music scene? – The music industry, especially in Australia, is definitely a cut-throat industry. It could take years of playing tiny gigs/shows until one finally gets a big break. It’s about consistency and writing catchy songs that will hopefully resonate with the people who stumble across your music. That’s why it’s important to keep pushing.

Tells us about your band? – I’m the lead singer of a local band called Nana’s Pie. Myself and my best mates, who are also twins, Adam and Nash Hindmarsh, have known each other since kindergarten. In the past three years, we entered the folk/ rock scene. We’ve achieved some

amazing goals such as playing at Splendour in the Grass in 2023, Caloundra Music Festival in 2022. We’ve supported major bands like The Dreggs, Pete Murray, Pacific Avenue, Sons Of The East and gained 250,000-plus music streams online. We have a highly anticipated new single coming out late May and we also have an Australian tour to organise for the middle of this year.

Do you have any upcoming gigs? – As Tyler Hammill, I have some local gigs around the Sunshine Coast that I tend to promote on my page, but the next big project is definitely the tour that will be announced in the coming weeks

How would you describe your music?

– Our music has been crafted by our experiences, blending the laid-back vibes of the Coast with captivating storytelling that incorporates folk but also rock aspects.

Who are your influences? – Some of my major influences include local duo The Dreggs, Sam Fender, Sons of the East and Chris Stapleton.

What’s next for Tyler? – Right now, most of my energy and commitment is going towards the original band Nana’s Pie. Most of my original songs can be found under that name on all streaming platforms. This national tour and upcoming single will hopefully score well with heaps of promo backing. The future is looking exciting.

What is your advice for other singers/ musicians considering entering the competition? – Make sure you have a somewhat established music career. I think having a small fan base, some shows under your belt and some experience within the industry is very important before going on shows like this.

MEDICATIONS CAN AFFECT EYE HEALTH

Medications play a crucial role in managing various health conditions. But it’s important to be aware that some medications can affect your eye health.

One class of medications known to impact eye health are corticosteroids, commonly prescribed for conditions such as inflammation, asthma and autoimmune disorders. Prolonged use of

corticosteroids can elevate the intraocular pressure, increasing the risk of glaucoma or exacerbating existing cases. Additionally, medications can cause dry eyes by reducing tear production. Others used to treat problems including lupus, rheumatoid

arthritis and some cancer therapies can have effects on your vision.

This must not be a deterrent from complying with your treatment regime, but rather a prompt to ensure you undergo any eye and vision screening your care team recommends.

Symptoms to look out for include changes in your colour vision, swelling around the eyes or vision distortion.

Your optometrist or ophthalmologist will examine your retina and optic nerve to ensure nothing is going astray.

Regular eye examinations are essential for detecting any medicationinduced ocular changes early and preventing potential long-term damage to eye health.

It’s imperative you communicate any changes in your vision or eye discomfort to your healthcare provider when starting a new medication or experiencing side effects. Ophthalmic side effects can often be managed or mitigated through close monitoring, dosage adjustments or switching to alternative medications under medical supervision. Regular eye examinations are also essential for detecting any medication-induced ocular changes early and preventing potential long-term damage to eye health.

SUE TRAVELS FROM A ‘TRAIN WRECK’ TO ENJOYING LIFE

“When your whole body is in a state of despondency, there is no joy or energy to live,” says Mooloolaba local Sue, after experiencing years of debilitating pain. But that has all changed after a visit to Cluzie Clinic.

Sue, aged 68, went to Cluzie Clinic in Buderim with severe pain and chronic fatigue symptoms. After years of trying many avenues, including hospitalisation (with tests such as X-rays, MRIs, CTs and an ECG) and physiotherapy, the pain and tiredness just kept getting worse.

“I really thought my body was winding down and I was on the way out,” she says.

Sue was experiencing the long-term symptoms of chronic fatigue. Good health had long since faded and now for Sue, it was a matter of living with and managing the debilitating pain in her back and legs.

Her daily life meant the smallest of chores had become a challenge, and the increase in fatigue over the past few years saw her heavy eyed and falling back into a deep sleep after basic morning activities.

The mindset of “was there any point to

living anymore?” was starting to take over.

“This debilitating tiredness and fatigue went straight to my core,” Sue says.

“Every time I tried to do anything, my muscles would give me payback and I would lose days in recovery.”

Sue was living in misery. If she overextended herself, she would become bedridden with migraines and vomiting.

All this took its toll on Sue’s body and led her to visit a physio who explained how the organs of the body can be affected by excessive vomiting or, in Sue’s case, days of dry reaching. This helped Sue in her abdominal area and allowed her to stand up for a little longer, but the fatigue and body pain remained.

After dealing with and managing the pain for years with no real relief, Sue slipped into the mental state of despondency and had given up on finding a remedy. Her partner had read about the Cluzie Clinic and ANF Therapy and encouraged Sue to give it a go. She asked her doctor if she had heard of ANF Therapy and whether it was safe. Her doctor investigated and encouraged Sue to try it.

During her visits with Cluzie, the team spent time going through Sue’s history and looked at her body as a whole – from her shoulders, down her spine and into her legs. The Cluzie team also took an in-depth look at her nerves, organs, lymphatic

SNORING & SLEEP APNEA

system and gut health. Claire, head clinical nurse consultant at Cluzie Clinic, explains why this approach is so important: “Every part of the body works together. Nothing works on its own, which is why we look at the body as a complete system.”

After nine sessions, Sue could not believe the difference. The heaviness of the fatigue had gone. The ‘payback’ after activity was almost a thing of the past and as Sue puts it: “I have my inner smile back and its beaming. Everything has changed. It’s beyond words.”

Sue is now enjoying a caravan holiday with her partner and says she has been able to help with the packing of the vehicles. One week into their travels, she reports that she is staying conscious and alert throughout the drive.

“I am thrilled to look out onto the countryside,” she says.

“My mental focus is so much better and I’m retaining more information. I find myself alive. I’m out there walking and birdwatching.

“Claire, the Cluzie Clinic, and the application of ANF therapy has been my pathway back to living and to once again feel the joy inside. It has been life changing.

“I went from being a train wreck back to enjoying life. I highly recommend ANF Therapy, Claire and the Cluzie Clinic.”

DEBILITATING EFFECTS OF CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

It is caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, leading to numbness, tingling and pain in the hand and fingers. CTS can be caused by a variety of factors, including repetitive hand movements, wrist injuries, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes and arthritis.

The impact of CTS on daily life can be significant, with sufferers experiencing difficulty with tasks that require fine motor skills such as writing, typing and

grasping objects. Additionally, the pain and discomfort associated with CTS can lead to sleep disturbances and decreased productivity.

There are various treatment options available for treating CTS. These include non-operative options such as injections and splints or operative options including open or endoscopic carpal tunnel release.

Cataracts and Dry Eyes

A cataract is any clouding of the lens of the eye. The lens is situated inside the eye, behind the pupil. It acts in the same way as the lens in a camera to help focus light rays on to the light sensitive nervous tissue in the back of the eye – the retina.

Dry eye syndrome is a general term for the breakdown of the tear film that protects the eye’s front surface. It is the most common symptomatic eye condition treated at Best Practice Eyecare. Dry eye syndrome causes chronic, tired, uncomfortable eyes.

Dr Michael Karpa and the amazing team at Best Practice Eyecare can help you with cataracts, dry eyes, and much more including glaucoma, pterygia, lid surgery and macular degeneration.

THE BEST WAYS TO PREVENT AND MANAGE SUN DAMAGE

Most of us on the Sunshine Coast enjoy our great climate and the outdoor lifestyle that comes with it.

This can leave our skin vulnerable to sun exposure – especially for those of us who grew up before sun safety.

Subtle skin-colour changes can be a sign of early sun damage. Larger brown, white or red patches can appear later, and skin can be more dry, flaky, tough or loose.

Sun-damaged skin is at increased risk of skin cancer. There are also specific sun spots called actinic keratoses (AKs) that are pre-cancerous.

AKs can be hard to see but are often red or brown and can be rough or scaly.

The risk of developing skin cancer from an AK is significant when there are many in one area.

The good news is that following sun safety measures reduces skin damage and risk. This includes protective clothing, broad-brim hats, seeking shade and daily factor 30 or 50+ sunscreen to all exposed skin. This applies even if you already have sun damage – it helps.

Once you have sun-damaged skin with AKs, there are proven treatment options to manage symptoms and reduce your skin

cancer risk. Efudix and Vitamin D cream is a combination treatment that uses the skin’s immune system to kill off the pre-cancerous cells. It is prescribed as a home treatment and works best with good instructions and supervision.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a one-off treatment. It uses a different cream that is activated inside sun damaged cells by light, destroying them and leaving healthy cells to grow. It treats AKs and improves skin quality, including symptoms from persistent crusts or scale.

SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre provides trained nursing support for applying home treatments, so you’re not left guessing.

The centre also has modern PDT facilities with aftercare processes to ensure you are well cared for. Go to sunlifeskincancercare.com.au.

HEARING LOSS AFFECTS MORE THAN THE INDIVIDUAL

Hearing loss generally creeps up on you.

Each year brings a further loss in acuity. That’s why it can be ignored by some people: they have become used to a muddled hearing world.

The people who notice it the most are those who need to communicate with the hearing-impaired person.

If you know someone who denies the problem, you can help. If your friend or partner turns the TV up too loud all the time, complains that everyone mumbles or constantly asks you to repeat yourself, then they probably have a hearing loss.

If they avoid noisy places, become tired listening in groups or they struggle understanding women or small children, they probably have a hearing loss. If they give totally incorrect responses to questions or fail to respond, they probably

have a hearing loss. What can you do?

Firstly, be encouraging. Seeking help for a hearing loss is of benefit to everyone.

Secondly, be supportive. It can be daunting to take the first steps but with you by their side, the process can be much easier. Thirdly, make sure they seek independent help. Find a local hearing clinic that looks at the hearing first and the technology second.

Hearing rehabilitation is a medical issue not a retail opportunity. If it looks like a shop, it probably is. You have the opportunity to improve someone’s quality of life. Don’t miss the chance.

Andrew Paton is a senior hearing rehabilitation specialist at Hear4Good: an Australian-owned independent hearing clinic at Golden Beach and Caloundra. Call 54770144 or visit hear4good.com.au.

The latest high-tech imaging to better detect melanomas

As the name suggests, Total Body Photography (TBP) is a technique for taking medical images of all your skin. Different systems and protocols exist but the aims are the same: improve early detection of melanoma and minimise skin biopsies.

Identifying new and changing moles is key. Modern systems integrate multiple features including accurate, reproducible imaging and high-tech software to improve viewing, comparison and pattern recognition.

Vectra 3D TBP is the most advanced system available, with only 28 currently in Australia.

Vectra 3D TBP uses 92 ultrahigh resolution cameras and cross-polarised lighting to create a 3D avatar of you with no skin reflection (to see into moles). It takes seconds to capture these images.

The speed and resolution of imaging makes it highly reproducible and accurate. Images are easy to review and compare, due to the advanced software. Patients can also use them for self-skin checks at home.

SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre has brought Vectra 3D TBP to the Sunshine Coast. Visit the website or give us a call.

The popular jab for effective pain relief

Dry-needling has been around since the early 1940s, yet some people haven’t heard of it or confuse it with acupuncture.

It is the art of inserting a tiny needle into myofascial trigger points to relieve tight muscles and stem patterns of referred pain anywhere in the body. Lovers of the practice swear by its positive effects on conditions such as sciatica, migraine, lower back pain and iliotibial band syndrome.

Dry-needling is best performed in conjunction with other therapies such as physio, chiro or remedial massage for maximum benefits.

Massage therapist of 14 years, Ally Cheetham, says the most-common comment she hears from clients is “not enough remedial therapists offer dryneedling here on the Coast”.

Ally decided to change that, launching Australian Dry Needling Services, providing workshops specifically for massage therapists and myotherapists.

The workshops have strictly limited seats and require attendees to have a current Diploma of Remedial Massage or to be enrolled in the diploma course.

“We’re even attracting attention from therapists in Perth and Melbourne, so there’s keen interest from clinics to enhance their services,” Ally says.

Register online for the Maroochydore workshop on May 8.

CPAP technology boosts user comfort

Recent advancements in CPAP therapy have transformed the landscape of apnea management and overall sleep quality.

The AirSense 11, crafted by ResMed, stands as a testament to the evolution of CPAP technology. Its wireless connectivity enables seamless software updates, ensuring users benefit from the latest features effortlessly. With whisper-quiet operation and integrated humidification, it offers a comfortable sleep environment, fostering better adherence to therapy.

The device’s standout feature is its intelligent sleep coach, which interacts with users to enhance comfort and adjust therapy settings through a user-friendly interface and mobile app. Cloud data upload facilitates remote adjustments by CPAP Direct clinicians, optimising comfort and efficacy.

The Solo Mask from Fisher & Paykel Healthcare redefines CPAP mask design, prioritising comfort and performance. Its innovative ‘stretch and fit’ headgear eliminates elastic straps and Velcro, reducing facial pressure while maintaining a secure seal.

Available in nasal cradle or nasal pillow configurations, this lightweight, minimalist mask ensures a leak-free experience without leaving marks on the face.

CPAP Direct is committed to leveraging technological progress to empower individuals with sleep apnea.

ORTHOPAEDIC

Recovery after an anterior total hip replacement

Many patients are surprised at how quickly they can comfortably ambulate after an anterior total hip replacement.

Patients are typically mobilised within hours of their surgery. Most of our patients usually rapidly progress to being independent on crutches and require them for only one to two weeks.

There are many factors that dictate how long a patient needs to stay in hospital but generally getting back to your home environment as soon as it is safe to do so is an important component of your physical, as well as your psychological, recovery.

Excessive physical activity in the first two months after a hip replacement is counterproductive. We generally recommend gentle walking and stretching.

Many patients are safe to drive after just three to four weeks and can perform most of their everyday activities within six weeks.

For patients who enjoy more extreme activities such as surfing, they should wait at least three months to return.

All patients are different, and you should discuss your specific situation with your orthopaedic surgeon.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES (MAR 21 - APR 19)

Have you been shopping up a storm when you should have been saving? Expect a financial hiccup as the sun, new moon, Venus, Jupiter and Uranus highlight money matters (and also bring up issues involving your personal values and self-esteem).

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)

Your career is about to get a welcome shot in the arm as Venus, Jupiter, Uranus and the new moon all barnstorm through your work zone. So it’s time to show your boss, colleagues and competitors what you are truly capable of.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

Sagittarians can be very scattered, but this week the sun, new moon, Venus, Jupiter (your power planet) and Uranus are all transiting through the earthy, steady sign of Taurus. So you will feel more grounded, focused and settled than usual.

QUIZ

1. Marcha Real is the national anthem of which country?

2. Which famous English poet died in April 1824?

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

With the sun, new moon, Venus, Jupiter and Uranus all lighting up your sign, your positive and negative Taurean traits are boosted this week. Expect to be more sensual, patient and dependable… and possessive, pedantic and stubborn.

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

On Tuesday the sun connects with Saturn, which will amplify your perfectionist streak. Which could lead to unwanted stress when you have to deal with unfamiliar situations and/or updated information. You’ll discover that perfection is hard to find.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

The sun makes a positive connection with your ruler Saturn, so concentration is high, your attention to detail is even better than usual, and any work you do will be of an extremely high standard. If you are looking for love, don’t accept second best.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

Communicating with others becomes complicated and nuanced, as the new moon urges you to dig beneath the surface and get to the bottom of an old emotional issue. You’re also keen to assist someone in need – but resist the urge to indulge in gossip

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

Prosperity planets Venus and Jupiter (plus Uranus and the new moon) are transiting through your ‘money-from-others zone’. Make sure you spend any windfall wisely, with a view to future financial security. Be proactive about communicating with others.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)

With the sun, new moon, Venus, Jupiter and your ruler Uranus visiting your domestic zone, Home Sweet Home is the place to be this week. Expect a fresh start involving a relative, a renovation or DIY project, a new home or an additional family member.

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Venus, Jupiter, Uranus and the new moon activate your hopes-dreams-and-wishes zone, so divert your attention away from current problems and draw up a wishlist for the rest of 2024. Use this opportunity to dream ambitious dreams for the future.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

The sun, new moon, Venus, Jupiter and Uranus are all transiting through your partnership zone. So, when it comes to relationships (of the romantic and platonic variety), expect the unexpected. Try to loosen up and go with the flow.

PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)

The sun and Saturn encourage you to stand strong and make decisions that suit you. A current situation has more flexible options than you thought. Mistakes can be fixed, contracts can be cancelled and agreements can be broken.

THE KEYS TO SECURING YOUR FIRST HOME

Taking onboard a few simple tips and avoiding common mistakes will establish a strong financial foundation for your big move.

Purchasing your first home in Australia requires not only careful planning, but also proactive financial management.

Finance broker Nojan Rahimi shares some practical steps and common mistakes young homebuyers make that can hinder their ability to secure a mortgage approval.

Step 1: Establish a strong financial foundation – start by ensuring your finances are in order. This involves:

• building a good credit score. Pay bills on time and keep credit card balances low

• saving diligently for a deposit. Aim for at least 20 per cent of the home’s value to avoid lenders’ mortgage insurance

• maintaining consistent employment. Lenders value consistent employment history when assessing loan applications.

Proactive tip: Regularly review your credit report to rectify any discrepancies that might negatively impact your loan application. You can check your credit file for free once a year on Equifax (equifax. com.au/personal/) and Illion (illion.com.au/).

Step 2: Stabilise your finances before

STAGE1 OnlySixLotsRemain

applying – lenders look at your bank statements to understand your spending habits and financial stability. Here are some proactive steps to consider:

• avoid frequent job changes. Stability in employment is a key factor in demonstrating financial reliability

• minimise large, unexplained bank transfers. Random or frequent transfers, especially to friends, can raise questions

about your financial management

• reduce debt levels. Pay down highinterest debts and avoid taking on new debts.

Common mistake: Making significant financial changes, such as changing jobs or making irregular large transactions, just before or during the loan application process.

Step 3: Understand your borrowing power and limitations – getting pre-approval from a lender helps clarify how much you can afford to borrow based on your financial situation. This step involves:

• gathering financial documents. Prepare payslips, bank statements and other relevant documents

• assessing your financial commitments. Include all liabilities in your discussions with lenders to get a realistic borrowing estimate.

Proactive tip: Use mortgage calculators provided by financial institutions to estimate your potential repayments and understand how different interest rates could affect your monthly budget.

Step 4: Keep your finances consistent through the buying process – from the

moment you decide to buy a home until the settlement, it’s important to maintain your financial status quo. This means:

• avoiding new credit applications. New loans or credit cards can impact your credit score and debt levels

• maintaining your savings pattern. Continue saving, even after reaching your down payment goal, to cover closing costs and moving expenses.

Common mistake: Taking on new financial obligations or extravagant spending after loan pre-approval but before the settlement.

Step 5: Plan for additional costs – be prepared for the additional costs associated with buying a home, including:

• stamp duty. This can be a significant expense, depending on the property value and location

• legal and conveyancing fees. Budget for these necessary services to ensure all legalities are correctly handled.

Proactive tip: Research potential first-time homebuyer grants or concessions available in your state, such as the First Home Owner Grant, which can help reduce these costs.

Here will be crap. But for any friends in North Sumatra, come Sunday it will be pumping and big. Bawa is calling, with three-metre swell, and I can tell you it is a wave that will feel a lot bigger than that. For the right take-off spot, you have to line up one large palm tree to a small bush with a clam shell underneath it. Yep, it’s a little tricky. Additionally, copping a flogging at this size will normally involve heading to the beach and walking back around if your legrope has not snapped. As Ella Fitzgerald once sang: “Dream a little dream.”
