is a favourite, and I love catching a movie at Sunshine Plaza. Our favourite food places in the world are the Terrace of Maleny and Reserve Restaurant in Maleny and also the Beerwah Hotel. They have the best food. Robert also really likes visiting the Big Kart Track because, like a lot of boys, he loves nothing better than speeding along the track! I believe that it is so important to support your local community; when we have time off we love to spend it in Australia. As a matter of fact, a few weeks ago we took a trip with some of my friends to Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef for some time off. So many Australians take trips overseas, and never spend any time exploring their own backyards. Go for a drive to western Queensland and visit Winton, take a trip to Tasmania to check out Cradle Mountain or just go and explore the Blue Mountains.

Q. What are your hobbies? A. I love climbing mountains, bush hiking, going

for a swim at the beach, mountain bike riding, and cooking. I enjoy stand-up paddle boarding of an afternoon and often take my paddle board along the coast. My other great passion is reading. I’m a total book worm. Reading opens up whole new worlds and you can learn so much from a book.

Q. What do you do in an average week? A. My days are always new and different; I have

heaps of adventures every day. I might be helping out at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital or visiting one of our new animals. I go to school at Australia Zoo too. I’m enrolled in Brisbane School of Distance Education, which means I can travel with my school work and there’s no homework. The best thing about living at Australia Zoo is I am surrounded by a family of animals and I’m able to share this family with everyone who comes to visit us at Australia Zoo. We are the most hands-on zoo on the face of the earth. This means all of our visitors won’t just look at our animals, but get in with them. If you want to hold a koala, kiss a snake or feed an

elephant, you can. I believe that when you get to hold or touch an animal it ultimately touches you, and you get this feeling of wanting to protect that animal for future generations to come.

Q. How much of the year do you spend living at Australia Zoo and how often are you travelling? A. We spend about half the year at Australia Zoo and the other half travelling. Myself and my family are very privileged to be able to travel for both work and time off. Because Robert and I do distance education we’re able to travel with our school work. We’ve done school in some interesting places like trains, hotels, boats, in the car and f ying in planes.

Q. How do you juggle work commitments with school and leisure time? A. Distance education is f exible so I can work around my other commitments. Distance education was f rst designed for kids who live in the outback and can’t get to a school, because they might live on a cattle property four hours away from the nearest town. It works well for us because I can choose when I take time off. If I have a big f lming project coming up, I can work through the school holidays, and then take that time off when we’re f lming, so that I don’t

have too many things happening in one day.

Q. Which school subjects do you love, and which ones are you not so keen on? A. I love English and learning about the world. I’m also completing TAFE certif cates in business and tourism. However, one subject that has never been my favourite is mathematics. I don’t really love it. Q. Having studied through distance education, do you ever wish you’d attended a regular school? A. To be absolutely honest, I’m really happy to do distance education. I have friends at the school who I talk to during phone lessons and via email, and who come and visit the zoo. The other great thing is I have never had to deal with school bullying and peer pressure. Don’t you think that is great? I mean really, there are so many kids that have to put up with bullying at school and I have never had that problem. Also, I can choose subjects that aren’t open to you at school; I’m able to pick the career path I take. I have so many friends all over the world and I get to travel, I get to see new cultures, eat new foods and learn about new wildlife. continued over>
