PUBLISHING EDITOR’S LETTER

What an amazing year it has been! This is our last issue for 2015, and we had such an amazing and successful year, with so many positives for our brand. One example is that we were voted runner up in the magazine category at the annual TopVendor Awards.

CREDITS Make-up: Bobbi Brown www.bobbibrown.co.za Clothes: Chilli Mer Boutique www.chillimer.co.za Photographer: Saara Pasanen

We are very excited to share this amazing issue with you, packed with lots of ideas, advice, fashion and beauty. Our team was privileged to do a styled shoot at the magnificent five-star Park Hyatt Hotel in Zanzibar with garments from various fashion houses. You can see this feature on page 162. Our beautiful cover shoot for De La Vida Bridal took place at the prestigious Munro Boutique Hotel in Houghton, Johannesburg. The décor for the shoot was breath-taking, and the team together with the photographer Belinda Louie Photography was absolutely incredible. We are privileged to feature the stunning engagement shoot by Veronique Photography of the former Mr South Africa John Owens and his beautiful fiancé Chantelle Bothma. Don’t miss our next issue in May 2016, where we will feature their wedding as an exclusive. A special thank you goes to our contributor in our Groom’s section in this issue, Aleit from The Aleit Group, once again sharing his special wisdom and advice with us. We also hosted our annual Bridal Celebration Market Day at the Lourensford Harvest Market. It was such a beautiful day, with various wedding suppliers displaying their products and services to future brides and grooms, with stunning bridal couture from various fashion houses in our fashion show. Our VIP event ended off the evening with guest speakers and more entertainment. I am very proud of my team, who worked very hard to make it such a success. A special thank you to all our sponsors for this Bridal Celebration – we had incredible prizes on offer. As always we have 14 real weddings in this issue, with a lot of ideas and advice from the actual brides and grooms on their special day. Thank you to all our suppliers and sponsors who made this year such a joy to be in this industry. Thank you to every reader who supports us – we so enjoy your feedback and the interaction we have with you. We have a lot of competitions in this issue. Make sure that you enter them all – there are wonderful prizes to be won. From the My Wedding Day team, we wish you and your family a wonderful and joyful festive season and a prosperous New Year.

ALEIT

As a wedding guest, one often wonders what the correct or accepted behaviour is. What does one wear? How much does one drink? Is it acceptable to applaud the couple once the ceremony is over? Wedding guru Aleit Swanepoel shares his pearls of wisdom from decades of experience in the wedding and events industry to point out a few pertinent things to think about when one attends a wedding. WEDDING ATTIRE However trendy it may be, don’t wear white to a wedding. You are stealing the bride’s thunder! The deal is simple: it’s the bride’s big day; she’s wearing an achingly expensive white dress and everyone should be looking at her – and not at any other woman in white. CEREMONY Don’t walk onto the aisle, that is just plain rude. It’s the bride’s aisle and you run the risk of damaging it before the couple’s special moment. Rather enter the pews/ rows of chairs from the sides. Put your phones and iPads away during the ceremony - it’s never a good idea to grab a shot of the bride walking down the aisle. It is a big no-no for me! Don’t lean into the aisle, as the majority of photographs that are taken by the professional photographer on the day will then be ruined. It’s the bride’s moment; with everyone trying to lean over to get a picture of her, the photographs are often spoilt by pictures of guests taking pictures!

DINNER Never leave a napkin lying on the floor, it looks messy. Nor do you have to tuck it into your shirt collar like a bib – or into your pants. Unfold it just enough to cover your lap. Although it can serve to protect your trousers or dress from a spill, its main purpose is to enable you to seamlessly remove food from the sides of your mouth. As such, use it when needed and when finished or excusing The Aleit Group Tel +27 87 121 0665 Fax + 27 86 638 4919 info@aleit.co.za www.thealeitgroup.com

PRE-DINNER DRINKS In my humble opinion, the way you hold your wine glass reveals plenty about your personality and on which side of the train tracks you were brought up (not to mention the amount you’ve consumed). Hold all stemmed wine glasses (red, white, etc.) towards the base of the stem between your thumb, forefinger and middle finger. You’ll find that your other fingers will just rest on the base naturally. Yes, this is the proper way to hold a wine glass. Holding at the stem prevents the warmth of your hands from increasing the temperature of the wine in the glass – be it red or white. And don’t worry, it’s totally acceptable socially to swirl your wine. CANAPES Double-dipping mortifies me! I like to say it’s like kissing everybody at the party; if you’re double dipping, you’re putting some of your bacteria back into that dip. Intuitively, we can all agree that dipping a chip or cracker after taking a bite might not be the most sanitary/hygienic practice.

yourself from the table place it neatly to the left of your plate. Sidenote: Have you ever been invited to a wedding which you couldn’t attend and wondered whether you still need to send a gift? I recommend taking the couple out to dinner a week before the wedding or after they come back from their honeymoon, as this is more personal. If this is not possible, then have a gift delivered. u

MAKE-UP | MIST

Every bride knows how important and tricky it can be to find the right make-up artist that not only makes her look gorgeous but also makes her feel fabulous on her wedding day. Here an expert gives some insider tips on airbrush make-up for your big day.

leaving shiny spots which are seen on the photos. In short, this make-up won’t go anywhere until you are ready to wash it off! Another big benefit of airbrush make-up is the way it looks in photos. High-definition cameras have really made make-up artists more aware of their application methods. Every line from a brush or sponge, if not blended well, can be seen in detail through an HD lens. With airbrush make-up you don’t ever have to worry about streaks or brushstrokes. The fine mist mirrors the structure of pixels in a digital image, making it flawless and requiring minimal edits. u For further information contact Talita on info@mist-make-up.co.za or +27 84 444 5266. See also www.mist-make-up.co.za

All photographs supplied by Talita from Mist-Make-up

We all have a different idea of what beauty means to us. When we look in the mirror, each of us sees something different. How we represent this view of ourselves is a true expression of individuality. Personally I feel that it is crucial that your make-up artist understands this and how to push your boundary a little further, while at the same time honouring your idea of beauty. This is what sets a good bridal make-up artist apart from a fashion make-up artist. The second challenge is to enable the make-up to last for hours but without getting that ‘over-layered’ look. With cameras constantly improving in ‘high definition’, we end up seeing more and more detail in the actual image than we do with the naked eye. I believe that make-up should be like a ‘mist’ that settles over the skin, creating a soft, even skin tone that lasts for hours without any touch-ups needed. This is exactly what Temtu silicone-based airbrush make-up can give you. Airbrush make-up is much finer and thinner when compared to a traditional application. The silicone-based product is applied by way of compressed air through an airbrush stylus onto the skin. This fine mist of colour covers the skin evenly, giving the appearance of a flawless complexion. Foundation colours are mixed for a perfect blend to beautifully match your skin tone and then sprayed from the décolletage to the face, seamlessly blending from the jawline to the décolletage. Another plus is that airbrush make-up will not transfer onto clothing, which not only keeps the wedding dress clean but also the groom’s collar! Also, since silicone is water-resistant, the effects of pesky perspiration and those tears of joy are no longer something that you need to worry about. The product contains no chalk or oil, which eliminates the problem of it mixing with the skin’s natural oils,

THE GROOM

Groom Michael Moore married Courtney Hickson at Imperfect Perfection in Pretoria. He provides insight into preparing for and enjoying your special day. See their wedding on p. 98. Where did you get ready? The groomsmen and I got ready at Imperfect Perfection. The team set us up in one of the groomsmen’s rooms on the first floor of their accommodation. Just down the hall was a balcony area, where snacks, beers and music was set up to keep us entertained whilst we awaited the ceremony. What helped you make a decision when you selected your best man? This was an easy decision for me. I selected the friend who knows me best – which happened to be a friend who had recently moved to London. I felt it important that I include him in this way at our wedding, to honour our friendship. Did you give your groom’s party any gifts? Yes, we selected an assortment of four different liqueurs and placed them into a Consol bottle. A ribbon was tied around the top, with a sticker saying ‘Groomsman’. Tell us about your bachelor’s party. I had two bachelors’ parties, the first about a month prior to the wedding. This took place in the Waterberg, where a friend of mine has a game farm. He arranged a full two-day getaway with the boys, where all kinds of drunken

debauchery took place. We went game driving, boating and swimming in the lake, with a midnight potjie under the stars, followed the next day by clay pigeon shooting and more drunken fun. No strippers at this bachelor’s by strict order of the bride! The second was for family and was a closer-knit bachelor’s. This does not mean that we didn’t drink - it took place at Hell’s Kitchen in Melville, where the shots never seemed to stop coming. Needless to say, I woke up the next morning in my boxers with no idea how I ended up there. I only have the stories of family and friends to add any form of recollection to the evening. Did you do something special for your bride before/on your wedding day? No, I didn’t – we were so focused on the upcoming wedding that there was little room or time to slip that in. What advice would you give a groom? I would tell him to relax and enjoy the wedding; it’s an incredibly special day that seems to fly by so quickly. I think it’s important to really try and take as much in as you can, and do this whenever you get a few seconds to yourself. I would also advise the groom to make sure his speech is well prepared, PAGE 29

so that the actual day is not overshadowed by nerves and anticipation of the upcoming speeches. What was the highlight of your wedding day? I know this seems like the typical answer, but for me it was the moment my bride walked into that chapel. I still cannot believe how in the moment we were; it was like nobody else was there, and it was just the two of us. Honestly, all I can remember is the origami cranes that were hanging overhead and my beautiful bride walking towards me. It was incredibly special. Any special details you would like us to know about? Yes, for our wedding my bride and her group of friends took on the mammoth task of folding and then hanging 1000 origami cranes. These were hung in the chapel. It turned out to be an absolutely beautiful addition to the décor. u SERVICE PROVIDERS Photographer: Carolien and Ben Groom’s suit: The Designer Warehouse Groom’s shoes: Woolworths Wedding rings: Vermaak Diamonds, Bryanston Jewellers

THE GROOM

That icon of style and wedding know-how, Aleit Swanepoel of The Aleit Group, fills you in on very important decisions to be made by the groom-to-be and protocol to follow in terms of etiquette. ATTIRE First and foremost, deciding on a ‘look’ for you and your groomsmen will really set the tone for the rest of your wedding experience – do not trust a suit hiring company in South Africa. My advice is to rather have a boys’ day out and go shopping. Everyone has to wear the exact same style and design, as this creates uniformity. Heaven forbid one of the groomsmen thinks that his suit of four years ago (that has four buttons down) is fashionable! It looks very odd in photos. Don’t think you have to buy the most expensive Italian brand either. My advice to grooms is to do Trenery or Woolworths Private Collection and then go to a reputable tailor and get the suits fitted. It is also not frowned upon for the groomsmen to pay for their own suits.

THE GROOM

THE MC AND FORMALITIES Remember, your MC does not actually have to be a close friend, but rather someone with great public speaking skills and a sense of humour. That said: Nobody needs silly jokes at a classy affair such as your wedding. The MC’s role is to give the event structure and to communicate the house rules. It has become trendy to get the formalities over with early on in the evening. In this way the nerves and (high?) emotions are out of the way and the bridal couple and their guests can relax from that point onward. ORDER OF EVENTS It is my recommendation that the following speeches take place in this order: toast to bridal couple (by someone that knows them personally), toast to the bride’s parents, toast to the groom’s parents, best man’s speech, maid of honour’s speech, groom’s speech, bride’s speech (if she wants to). I find that up to 80% of the bridal couples I see opt for no bubbly during speeches, as we serve plenty of bottles KOBUS of bubbly TOLLIG during pre-drinks. Guests can sip on their own drink during speeches and don’t need to spoil their palate. Put a limit on the duration of speeches, of 5 minutes per person maximum. Afterwards guests can start to mingle and freshen up, giving the chef some time to serve the meals at optimum temperature.

CAROLIEN & BEN PAGE 38

THE GROOM WHO SAYS WHAT Once guests are seated, wine is of the utmost importance. Service is key! Waitrons must be at their stations ensuring guests are comfortable by offering to help with their jackets, pull out their chairs, place napkins on their laps, etc. This is also when the MC opens with the welcome. My advice on any public speaking is never to tap on the mic and never to blow into it either. The MC can start off by briefly contextualising his/her relationship to the couple and then explain the house rules. A good example would be: “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my name is Mark Smith. I have the honour of being your Master of Ceremonies this evening. You might ask about my relationship to the couple. Well, I was actually the one who introduced them or, for those who do not know, I’m the groom’s brother. A few logistics of the evening: the restrooms are on the far right of the room. Wine, beer, juices are available freely from waitrons, etc.” Never say it is a cash bar, the guests can figure that out for themselves. “The Bride and groom will arrive shortly. When you hear the music, please all rise for Mr and Mrs …”

THE GROOM’S SPEECH Always use cue cards: this ensures that you stay on track and mention everything that you need to. These days it is unacceptable for the male guests to form a rowdy audience to intentionally disrupt the groom’s speech. This is disrespectful to not only the groom, but also his bride and the respective families. This is the groom’s moment to shine, say his thanks and look deep into his bride’s eyes and proclaim his everlasting love for her. Back to the speech - always start with the bride, telling her how stunning she looks and how lucky you are to now be her husband. Thank your own parents for raising you. Move on to the bride’s parents – thanking them for raising such an amazing individual. Thank guests that have travelled from far to be there, but do not be specific, so as not to offend anyone should you forget a few names. While you may have every intention of thanking everyone, remember that suppliers have been paid for their services and might not even be present. Finally, always come back to the bride, ending off with that “ah” moment! u

FASHION | ICE QUEEN

Kat Willemse, the photographer on this beautiful shoot, grew up in Europe, and has a fascination with snow. As a child she used to spend hours with her face pressed against a cold window, watching the snow falling out of the sky and hugging everything in a white blanket. We have that to thank for her inspiration on these pages!

PAGE 54

FASHION | ICE QUEEN There is something absolutely magical about snowflakes slowly falling out of the sky. It is as if they are dancing in slow motion for you. When the sunlight hits the surface of fresh snow it is like someone threw millions of little diamonds on the ground. Snow covers all imperfections and dust, making everything perfectly white and pure again. But fresh snow is so fragile; the touch of your hand will destroy it within seconds. That’s what draws me towards snow, the fact that it’s so elusive: it’s nothing more than frozen water, but it holds the power to transform reality into a fairytale. I always wanted to bring the magic of snow into a wedding-styled shoot – to combine elaborate white wedding gowns with a curtain of fresh snow. When I saw the Ice Queen in the Narnia movie, I knew it was possible!

We started gathering ideas and details for this shoot. Together with a handful of friends, we created a reality out of a movie set. We wanted the entire set to resemble the winter feel. That’s why you will not see any flowers, only crystal candelabras that look like ice popsicles. There are no bouquets; we replaced them with silk and brooches. The weather played along on the day, sweeping us with wind and showering us with cold rain. That made the images even more realistic! The outcome was worth every effort. We managed to bring European winter into a South African wedding-styled shoot. We hope you enjoy the inspiration. u

ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

JOHN OWENS & CHANTELLE BOTHMA

Photographer: Veronique Photography Location: Camps Bay Beach

Hunky former Mr South Africa John Owens and his gorgeous fiancée Chantelle Bothma (Miss Jacaranda Show and Top Model South Africa finalist) have set the date for Valentine’s Day 2016. The photos from their engagement shoot show what a model couple they are! John, an aspiring TV presenter, has been a Sales Manager for one the biggest private property trusts in SA since 2005. Chantelle is a graphic designer and studying marketing, apart from having many modelling titles. She hopes to open her own school where she can teach girls from a young age what true beauty is about - and make a difference in their lives. Their engagement shoot was their very first photo shoot together as a couple. Chantelle: “You have to capture such moments. They are precious memories.” John: “We wanted to show the world how much we love each other. So many people have already given up on finding love. I know that myself and Chantelle also had. If we could find each other, there is hope for everyone.”

They got engaged on 12 July 2015 and both loved working with photographer Veronique. “She is such a talented, professional photographer and very easy to work with. She has a very inviting and friendly personality, so you feel right at home working with her. The photos were taken on the beaches of Camps Bay, our first ever beach photo shoot too!” John and Chantelle first met at the Protea Hotel at O. R. Tambo International Airport, where John was a judge at a competition that she was competing in. They got engaged on the top of the Magaliesberg Mountain at Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort. So what are their favourite things about each other? John: “Where do I start? Firstly I loved the fact that she is a complete package. She is beautiful but she is also very smart. The fact

PAGE 64

that she is smart got me interested. She also has the purest heart of anyone I know. She always puts other people first, even if it causes her life to be disrupted.” Says Chantelle: “I love everything about him, but mostly his sense of humour as he always knows how to make me laugh, even when I’m feeling down. I love that he loves me for who I am. John really treats me and does so much for me … washing my car, doing the dishes, fixing things. He really is a great role model for the men in South Africa, and I’m very proud to walk beside him and call him mine.” They will be living in Centurion, Gauteng, where John already has a house, but will certainly be looking to buy a bigger house later when the patter of little feet is heard, probably

in the same area. So how do they see their future as husband and wife together? John: “I do not see much changing, as we currently live our lives as if we are already married and have the commitment already, so we just need the papers. I call her my ‘wife’ and she calls me her ‘husband’. But I know that as soon as the ring is on the finger, then she is going to start shopping for baby clothes. So for now I am still safe!” Chantelle: “To be honest, for me, I don’t think our wedding is really going to change anything as we are already functioning as a great team. But I really look forward to being Mrs Chantelle Owens and being able to say that I’m officially John’s wife. I think God has amazing plans for our future together as husband and wife, and I can’t wait to see what adventures lie ahead for us.”

In terms of major future career plans, John would like to establish their #TeamBotwens name as a company and do lots of work through it. He says he is currently changing his career to make sure that he has a bit more time to focus on his family as well as his charities. Chantelle is working as a graphic designer while furthering her studies through UNISA towards a B.Com. Marketing Management degree. “I would love to complete my degree next year and see what doors open for me. I’m also doing John’s PR work, and loving it! He pays me in love, and that makes me a rich woman.” They would also like to share that love finds you, not the other way around. “We both gave up on love due to past experiences, but God matched us at the right place and the right time in our lives. Don’t give up on love – we didn’t, and look where we are today. God is the best match-maker!” u For more about this couple, see https://www.facebook.com/ TeamBotwens

ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

ANTHONY HARVETT & WILLINE PIENAAR

The engagement shoot of Willine and Anthony captures this special moment in their lives forever. They share their feelings and future plans with us. They won this shoot from us at The South African Wedding Show in Cape town. Willine Pienaar and Anthony Harvett first met as students at the University of Stellenbosch, in an overlapping compulsory course as part of their Bachelor’s degrees. “Anthony, after some persistence, managed to persuade me to join him for a Valentine’s Day picnic. With his green Toyota Tazz and a borrowed Spiderman blanket we officially had our first date!” Willine tells us how Anthony proposed: “On 8 April 2015 Anthony ‘lured’ me away on a supposed weekend with friends to a guest farm in the Elgin Valley. We spent the morning rowing on a secluded dam with beautiful views. I was doing most of the rowing and Anthony was trying to catch the imaginary bass. At some point Anthony called me to look up at what he had caught. I was speechless – it was a diamond ring! I said yes, leaving us both teary-eyed, yet jumping from excitement so we nearly capsised our small love boat. Needless to say, the friends are yet to arrive.” We asked them to tell us what they love about each other. Anthony: “Willine completes me and is the only person who understands me.

“She is always there when I need her the most, and I love her beautiful smile and her ability to make my day, every day. And the fact that she is loving, caring, hardworking and absolutely drop-dead sexy!” Willine: “His warm-hearted and unconditional love and affection. His willingness to assist me in anything, no matter the task or the time of the day. The fact that he is supportive of my decisions and accepts me for who I am, and his firm Christian values, respectfulness and great sense of humour. He is also handsome and extremely intelligent.” They say that before settling down with kids and growing old together, they would like to spend their late 20s as travellers and dreamers, always looking for something new and exciting. Currently their careers require them to be city-bound, but one day they would love to return to the ‘platteland’ where their roots are. Of the engagement shoot they say “Veronique was absolutely amazing from start to finish. The experience was magical and very professional. Veronique has the wonderful ability to make you feel comfortable and relaxed.” Their wedding is going to be on 19 March 2016, on the Pienaar farm in the Ceres district.u

day. “We had a flower crown-making station, where everybody made their own crowns, and one was made for the bride-to-be. Megan had a video made of her husband-to-be Michael Moore, asking him questions about himself that Courtney had to get the answers right to. See Courtney and Michael’s real wedding on p. 98. PAGE 70

“Her aunt (one of the bridesmaids) also surprised her by flying in from London for her special day a week before. One of her best friends, Michelle (also one of the bridesmaids) could unfortunately not make it, but she was with us in spirit and she sent us a design with pictures of her and Courtney with a special note. This was very special for Courtney. Everyone had to wear florals, so we kept the décor neutral toned to make everyone’s outfits stand out.” Some of the special touches included bunting hung from the trees, balloons by the pool and doilies hung from the ceiling to give the event a festive feeling. “We also put loads of flowers in teapots and teacups, and we froze flowers in large ice cubes for the champagne bucket. Everything was light, bright and feminine.” Sherri’s advice for future bridesmaids on planning such an event: “Let all the bridesmaids work together to create a special day, as they all know different elements about the bride-to-be that they can highlight for this event.” u

STYLED SHOOT | LOVE BLOOMS

The theme and look of this lovely shoot is inspired by spring. The blossoms work so well with the beautiful soft pastel colours – and all of the elements which we describe below combine to create a beautiful Spring Wedding look. The key element of this look is flowers in soft pastel colours. White, clean tables work well to keep the look fresh. We decided on bigger vases instead of small scattered ones to put emphasis on the two big arrangements on the table. Beautiful glass vases and clear glasses keep this look modern and elegant. It is important to keep the flowers loosely arranged to maintain the informal style. The cake really stood out for us, with a ruffled bottom tier in soft pastel and plain white top tier decorated with one of the same type of flowers from the arrangements on the table. The cake is modern yet fun, and worked really well on a cut-glass cake stand. The beautiful wedding dresses by Elizabeth Stockenstrom have lots of lace and are inspired by the elegant bride. They work well with the softness of this theme, with lots of lace and tulle, and suit any bride.

PAGE 74

STYLED SHOOT | LOVE BLOOMS

The stationery is predominantly lasercut items, which offer delicate, detailed elegance. We decided on soft off-white paper to go with the clean sophisticated look of the shoot. If you are a brideto-be and want a similar style to what is depicted in this shoot for your own wedding day, we suggest choosing a venue that is a blank canvas. A light and airy venue would work well. Go with white tables or tables with white tablecloths, and put emphasis on pastelcoloured flowers arranged loosely. u

Lené tells how she met her future husband: “We met at an Afrikaans ‘lang-arm’ dance venue on Chris’s 30th birthday. From the moment we laid eyes on each other we knew – it was love at first sight.” PAGE 82

REAL WEDDING

Chris proposed to her on the gorgeous Table View beach as the sun was setting “on one of the most beautiful days in December 2014. This was following one of our busiest weeks of work, and Lené was not expecting it at all.” Lené says that as the sun began to set, Chris started getting a bit nervous. “Eventually he turned and looked at the ocean, and said ‘There is something that I have been hiding from you, and I should have told you this a long time ago’, followed by a 5-minute speech about life. With me in tears, he turned, took a small box out of his jacket, went onto his knee and popped the question!” Of her wedding day, Lené says that since she was getting married to her best friend, man of her dreams and the love of her life, “what else could I want? Of course, a bit of prettiness in between ... I am a girl after all!” Their highlight was getting everyone that they love and who had played a big role in their lives together to celebrate the beginning of their love story. “We had a fun-filled day full of joy, laughter and awesomeness with friends and family.” Their advice is to remember that your wedding day is all about you and only you. “Do not get caught up in the trivial aspects that don’t go according to plan. Enjoy the day with the special people in your life, and cherish it forever.” u PAGE 83

Patrick got down on one knee once they had reached the summit of a hike in the Drakensberg. “It was my birthday weekend and we had only been dating for 8 months, so it was very unexpected – and absolutely perfect! My mom and Patrick designed my ring without me finding out, which I think must have been the most difficult thing in the world as they used my goldsmiths – and somehow managed to create the perfect ring. “Our wedding ceremony was held under a beautiful acacia tree (as you can tell, we are quite outdoorsy). We had a beautiful view of the Lebombo mountains. My highlight was seeing the look on Pat’s face when he saw me walking down the aisle, and knowing that in a few minutes we were going to be husband and wife. “Patrick and I wrote letters to each other to read the night before our big day. It was the perfect way to go to sleep with a calm mind and have sweet dreams.” They had a good idea for a greeting on the big day: “You can’t say a big ‘hello’ to your man once you have walked down the aisle; so Patrick and I decided that we would wink at each other. It lightened the mood and it was a nice way to connect with each other before we got to the ‘I do’s’ and the kiss. “We also took a few minutes to reflect and watch everyone during the reception, and to take it all in that everyone was there to celebrate us becoming husband and wife.” u PAGE 87

“The pathway was made by red ribbon, and there were roses and candles with pictures of us from when we first started dating to the most recent. At the end of the pathway was a teddy bear that was holding a sign that said ‘Will you …?’ As Gemma turned around there I was on one knee ready to ask ‘Gemma will you marry me?’” They had a Jewish wedding ceremony. Before the ceremony itself, the bride is seated and the groom is brought to her to confirm that she is the correct bride. Once the groom and bride agree that they are the correct people, the groom veils the bride. They then proceed to sign the Jewish and civil marriage certificate. After this, the groomsmen and groom (who was accompanied by his sister) walk down the aisle, followed by the bridesmaid and finally the bride, who was walked down the aisle by her brother and mother. They describe the ceremony as very upbeat: “The Rabbi was a lot of fun and kept the ceremony enjoyable for all.” A highlight of their day was seeing each other for the first time. “Before a Jewish wedding, the groom and bride are separated and do not see each other for a week. It felt like an eternity and heightened the emotion when we did see each other again.” Gemma’s father has passed away, and since he would not be there to walk her down the aisle and have the father/daughter dance, Neal arranged with Gemma’s male relatives to dance with her during the reception to a song that always reminded her of her dad. “It was an extremely emotional moment, but incredibly special. We also decided to remember Gemma’s dad in unique ways during the day. A heart cut out of his favourite shirt was stitched into Gemma’s dress on top of her heart, and there was a whiskey table to drink toasts to his memory.” Something everyone enjoyed was the singing waiters. “They were amazing entertainment that no one expected. They really blended into the staff working at the wedding, and everyone was surprised by their performance and really enjoyed it!” Their advice to you future brides and grooms? “Enjoy every moment and do not stress if it doesn’t go to plan. There will always be hiccups in the planning process, but don’t let them overshadow the reason you are getting married – your love for each other.” u PAGE 91

Their wedding at the Kleinkaap Boutique Hotel in Centurion took place on a warm summer’s day. Says Nicole: “You must always dream big! We were set on an outside wedding. It rained every day prior to the wedding and everyone was warning against having it outside – but somehow I got my perfect day with the love of my life!” Their reception was held in the evening, surrounded by faerie lights, jazz music by jazz trio Up a Tone, and classic French décor, with a dance floor set up outside. The bride’s ‘something blue’ was a bracelet that her mother made for her, which included blue stones. Ettienne’s mother made the wedding cake, using Fairview cheeses. u

She describes how he proposed to her: “We went to Mount Grace for a work conference. We had a glorious dinner and delicious wine (that we later sourced for our wedding). I went to freshen up when we got back to the room. When I walked out of the bathroom the door of our balcony was open wide – and Mikey was standing there waiting. It wasn’t a work conference after all!” She says that from the moment that Mike proposed, she knew that she wanted 1000 origami cranes hanging at their wedding. “I got all hands on board and every friend helped in folding and signing the cranes until we reached our goal. Our beautiful chapel had exposed wooden beams that had our 1000 origami cranes proudly hanging from them on our wedding day. It was truly glorious.” Courtney’s ‘something old’ was a brooch that she placed on the twine of her bouquet, and her something new was the sterling silver knot ring she bought for herself and all the bridesmaids. Something blue was her navy denim sandals! Her advice to those of you planning your own weddings? “The build-up to your wedding is a trying time. Your relationship will take strain in some way or another, but when you get to your wedding day all is forgotten the moment he sees you at the end of the aisle.” u

events, their paths never officially overlapped until mid-2012. “I Steven says he remembers turning to his cousin and telling him ‘This is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen’. We were officially introduced by Donna Dudley (one of Veronica’s best friends) and Steven’s cousin Gerrard Ansara. PAGE 102

We hit it off from date one (he took me to Pigalle in Bedfordview), and marriage was discussed very early on in the relationship.” Steven proposed to Veronica on their two-year anniversary. “He took me away for the weekend, which isn’t out of the ordinary, but this time to the Palace of the Lost City at Sun City. We got married exactly 9 months later.” The ceremony took place at Rosebank Catholic Church. “Saying our vows was one of the biggest highlights, and the feeling of walking out as husband and wife was incredible. There is such a change in how you see one another, and it was immediate for both of us.” The vases with candles and petals on the stairway leading to the entrance of their reception venue were all vases that Steven had given to Veronica during the course of their relationship. “People cannot believe it when I tell them how many vases I have! He delivers flowers to my office/home literally monthly with a new message in a card each time. It was so special that we used these on our wedding day.” Villa Tuscana was the first venue they went to see. “The décor was elegant and chic, lots of flowers and candles gave it a romantic feel and things were finished with a touch of lace. The gardens at Villa Tuscana are stunning and include beautiful benches and statues, which I fell in love with. Being Italian, I think I was drawn to that style! Our first song was of course ‘All of me loves all of you’ by John Legend. “What fun we had cutting our cake! It included four tiers: red velvet, cappuccino, nutella and vanilla. The icing was designed with fine lace and topped off with fresh flowers. Steve and I stood back and just took 5 minutes to look at everything … people were laughing and smiling and dancing, just having fun and loving life! It was just amazing to stand back together and look at our wedding day.” Their advice for those of you planning your own weddings: “Make sure you work well with and have a great relationship with your suppliers.” They add: “Someone once told us that your life only starts when you get married – that is the real beginning of your life, how you define yourself and who you really are … and everything beforehand is just child’s play. And that was 100% correct; 2 May 2015 was the first day of our forever.”u

18.04.2015 VENUE: IMPERFECT PERFECTION, PRETORIA DÉCOR STYLE: MODERN CLASSIC WITH VINTAGE TOUCHES NUMBER OF GUESTS: 99 HOME TOWN: NOORDHEUWEL,

Justine had been friends with Brandon’s cousin for many years, but did not meet Brandon until attending a birthday party at a restaurant in February 2012. “I saw him standing with his cousin, so my friend pointed towards him and said ‘Now that is Brandon, Jeandre’s cousin’, and I immediately said ‘Wow, that’s my husband!’”

In December 2012 Justine’s mother moved to Cape Town and they decided to take a road trip to visit her, and to come back to spend Christmas visiting Brandon’s mother. Says Justine: “I just had a feeling that something was up, because I had to get my passport ready! On our way to Cape Town Brandon kept on telling me that I was not allowed to look in the glove compartment. So for about two weeks around Cape Town and back that ‘secret thing’ in the glove compartment was burning a hole – that is how badly I wanted to have a peek.” The day after Christmas arrived and Justine thought to herself ‘now our holiday is over and it’s obviously not an engagement ring’. But then everything changed! Brandon said: “Don’t unpack your bags just yet, we are still going somewhere special.” They left for the romantic town of Clarens on the 26th, which Justine loved because she had never been there before. Then on the 28th, what she thought was going to be the drive home turned out to be the route to Lesotho! “We stayed at Maliba Lodge in the most gorgeous mountains – and that is where he eventually went down on one knee and asked me to marry him.” This couple believes in three things that make any relationship or marriage work: 1. faith in God; 2. respect; and 3. trust. They say: “If you can successfully practice those three things every day, you can only have a wonderful and blessed future.” Of their wedding Justine says “Seeing Brandon’s face as I was walking down the aisle was priceless. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing how much your husband-to-be loves you and is not afraid to show his emotions. The highlight was definitely our first dance, which was very special and romantic. I changed into another wedding dress, which was more to Brandon’s style and taste – and oh boy, did he love that dress!” Justine works for De La Vida Bridal Couture and says: “I always make my brides feel like princesses and make other brides’ dreams come true. Now it was my turn to feel like a princess by having the privilege of wearing not only one but two beautiful San Patrick dresses by De La Vida!” u Justine is the bride featured on our cover.

These two met on an early-morning train from Luzern to Basel in Switzerland on their way to work on 6 August 2010. Says Zsuzsanna: “I had taken that train/route every morning for 7 years, but Beat had taken that train for the first time in his life to go to a business meeting!”

They both knew that they were meant to be together, but the topic of marriage was never brought up for 4 years. “In January 2015 we were in Cape Town spending time with our best friends Tony and Louise for a week. When we met them on the first day, Beat shared the ‘big news’ about us planning to get married in a very casual, relaxed way. It must have been the surroundings that made him felt so assured. He never proposed, but we both knew!” Zsuzsanna jokes that if anything was ‘something old’ at their wedding, it was the bridal couple. “However, getting married and organising a wedding was new to me. I have never been married. The process of finding the best designer in SA, Hendrik Vermeulen, just by coincidence was a miracle. When I walked into his Couture by chance, I thought that it was a boutique. As I stepped in, my attention was drawn to the beautiful materials lying on the counter. From far I could see the excellent quality and knew they were from Italy. The materials were exactly what I have always had in mind for my wedding. At this moment, I knew I was at the right place. “My blue moments were mainly driven by the many organisational details. At times I felt that I had to pull in the reins, then in the end I just had to let go! It all turned out to be just fine, wonderful, more than I could ever have expected. We managed to surprise ourselves.

PAGE 112

REAL WEDDING

“On this day we experienced how all the things came together in a supernatural way. All our expectations were superseded and we were deeply surprised by the beauty of it. There was a sweetness in the atmosphere. Everything had a wonderful glow around it. On the beach we took the most magnificent photographs with our guests. I love to look at every one of them. “When we went back to the reception after the sun just dropped into the sea, once again a special glow filled the reception and mixed itself with the light of the many candles turning the atmosphere warm, static and very inviting. The venue at 12 Apostles was dressed up like a wedding cake, itself sweet and gracious. It was a prime moment in our lives. “Advice to future brides and grooms is not to be afraid to live your dreams while organising your wedding day. A perfect day is composed of many factors. Listen to the music of your heart, hear the melody and have faith. For 9 months we carried the nicest dreams in our hearts and enjoyed every moment. Turning our dreams into reality was teamwork and our first achievement together. We never thought of wanting to impress anybody, yet we made a lasting impression on ourselves forever.” u

MAGICAL MARRIAGE MADE WITH LOVE MELISSA KRETSCHMER & GRANT NEWMAN

FANTASY FUSION

28.03.2015 VENUE: THE PAVILION AT BELAIR, PAARL VALLEY DÉCOR STYLE: FAIRYTALE FUSION NUMBER OF GUESTS: 96 HOME TOWN: CAPE TOWN

Grant and Melissa say that they met “late last century”! They first met in 1999 when they were both students, and have been sweethearts for 15 years. They spent some of those years looking for a venue for their special day. Grant explains: “We searched for years for the perfect venue. Melissa wanted a rambling rose garden, labyrinth, overgrown church, clipped hedges and weeping willow tree – no small feat to find! We finally found our utopia at Belair.” PAGE 114

REAL WEDDING

Grant took all of these into consideration when he proposed. Says Melissa: “He proposed to me under an old tree, near a rambling stream in the middle of the forest during a Sunday walk. Grant constructed the tree we got married under to replicate the tree in the forest where he proposed to me.” Their theme was ‘Through the Looking Glass meets Secret Garden meets Great Expectations’ – a complete fairytale fusion. Grant and Melissa were heavily involved in the design and décor direction of their wedding. Key décor elements were plentiful: bold black and white stripes, hanging wisteria, creepers, antique moss and suspended flower boxes. There was also an oversized flower garden photo booth complete with throne chair, giant pink flamingos and flamingo-headed croquet mallets on the lawn, giant shepherd hooks with birdcages, giant walk-through light-up hearts, the magical homemade wedding tree, miniature and oversize vintage keys, flocked grass rabbits, a unicorn, dodo bird, oil lamps, vintage crockery and glassware, whimsical vintage animal prints, vintage leather-bound books, edible flowers, a fauna labyrinth, and ethereal prima ballerina bridesmaids’ dresses. They did a lot of the décor themselves as there wasn’t a lot available to hire to create the look they were after. With the help of their best man and good friends they welded, painted and electrified the giant hearts placed in the garden, made the flamingo-headed croquet mallets, welded, clad and made the giant oversized flower and flower garden, made the tree installation they got married under (using a discarded tree trunk and bolted-on branches), and made the five tulle prima ballerina bridesmaid dresses (through Melissa’s design label – Kretschmer) and the striped tablecloths. They also sprouted and grew all the wheat grass trays used as centrepieces, and brought in most of their furniture from home. “We used this for garden lounges (chaise, throne chair, hot pink lounge suite, etc.), along with ornaments, oddities and glasswear which we used as novel centrepieces. We also customcreated the menu with Dish Social to be different and incorporate edible flowers.” Melissa and Grant say they loved walking hand-in-hand after dinner in the magical lit-up garden, admiring the beautiful fantasy world they had created.

18.04.2015 VENUE: THE FOREST WALK, MIDRAND DÉCOR STYLE: TURQUOISE & BROWN (AND A FORESTY FEELING) NUMBER OF GUESTS: 70 HOME TOWN: BOKSBURG

Melissa and Johan met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in 2008, and 4 years later he proposed to her on a beach in Zanzibar! She says that the highlights of their wedding day included a song that her mother played for her before the wedding. “Also, my husband-tobe sent me roses that I received every hour from 4 hours before the wedding (at 4 hours before, 4 roses; at 3 hours before, 3 roses, etc.). These plus my father walking me down the aisle and the pastor saying ‘You are now Mr and Mrs Breedt’ were the greatest moments of my day.” PAGE 118

REAL WEDDING

Melissa was armed with the traditional ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’: “Something old was my grandmother’s handbag that she used on her wedding day, something new was my earrings, something borrowed was my friend’s bracelet, and something blue was my garter.” Their chocolate and vanilla wedding cake reflected their colour scheme of brown and turquoise (they both like brown, and turquoise seemed like the perfect colour to match with it). Melissa says that a wedding is a party, not a performance: “If at the end of the day you are married to your best friend, then everything went perfectly!” They honeymooned in Phuket, Thailand, and stayed at Mandarava Resort, which they say they would recommend to anyone. u

Tanya asked for his number, saying she had lost it, and Johann gave it

Chemistry class! After seeing him around on campus a year later, to her freely – knowing full well she had never had it in the first place. “That was the start of a blossoming relationship. We dated for six years, supporting each other, touring Europe together and finally graduating together.” PAGE 122

This couple feels that friends are most important. “They are the people that help when you struggle, guide you when you are blind, and celebrate with you when you succeed. Therefore, Johann decided to make all of our friends part of the proposal! We had recently moved in together, and wanted to host a housewarming. He created a WhatsApp group, invited all of our family and friends, and asked them to join our housewarming on the farm. (I was included in this group.) “To my surprise, all our friends started to cancel, stating that they already had other plans. Secretly Johann had created another WhatsApp group, asking all the guests to cancel. On the night, friends started to arrive that initially had ‘canceled’. I didn’t think anything of it. “I went inside to check on my sister’s children, then walked outside and found 50+ friends and family all standing with sparklers in a semi-circle around Johann, who was on one knee, holding a small box!” Tanya really wanted to get married outside, under pine trees, in the fresh air. The picturesque ATKV Drakensville venue was a perfect match for her dream ceremony. ATKV Drakensville’s accommodating events coordinator, Hesmi Olwagen, made everything possible, including moving a tree! “After spotting the beautiful area where I wanted the ceremony to take place, I noted that there wasn’t enough shade for the guests to sit under. Fortunately for us, environmental specialists had visited the previous month, and ordered that all nonindigenous trees be removed, due to the large amount of water they drink. ATKV Drakensville agreed to relocate a pine tree for us, just for shade. “I walked down the aisle with blue skies above me, pine trees beside me and a beautiful mountain range in front of me. My teary husband was one of the highlights of the ceremony.” Their advice for you is to enjoy your special dream day and not to sweat the small stuff. “Rather focus on enjoying the moment and spending time with the guests that may have travelled from far to celebrate with you.” u

NATURAL WONDER

26.09.2015 VENUE: NOOITGEDACHT WINE ESTATE, STELLENBOSCH DÉCOR STYLE: NATURAL/ ORGANIC WITH STRONG GEOMETRIC ELEMENTS NUMBER OF GUESTS: 150 HOME TOWN: SOMERSET WEST

So how did Marisa and Wihan first meet? “I wish it was a movie-like romantic story, but in fact we met at a braai – a casual, non-fairy tale braai. I also wish I could say it was love at first sight, but it wasn’t (at least not for me). Wihan had been at a bachelor’s that afternoon, so let’s just say he arrived with a lot of confidence! He walked straight up to me and told me I was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Normally I would feel flattered, but I was certain he wouldn’t even remember me the following day. PAGE 124

“But he did – he called the next day, and the day after that, and the day after that. I was reluctant. He was adamant. It didn’t take long for my annoyance to turn into curiosity, curiosity to turn into adoration, and finally love.” They were still living in Gauteng when Wihan arranged a weekend away to Cape Town, and was adamant about visiting Blaauwklippen Wine Farm. After a tour they sat down for a picnic under the trees. “I thought Wihan was sick, because he was extremely quiet the whole morning. When he got up the courage to propose, he was shaking so much he could barely hold the ring, never mind put it on my finger! I knew I wanted to be with no-one else at that moment.” They say that the highlight of their wedding was getting married in one of the oldest churches in South Africa – Moederkerk Stellenbosch. As they had only moved to Cape Town 6 months before their big day, it was a destination wedding for most of the guests, who came from as far away as Namibia, Germany and Australia. “Everyone celebrated our wedding day into the early hours of the morning, truly enjoying every second with us.” Their birthdays are just one day apart, on 15 and 16 November, so for only one day in the year they are the same age. Says Marisa: “You can just imagine how Wihan loves telling people he is married to an older woman!” They would recommend a wedding planner to anyone, as well as investing in a good photographer, and add that while they underestimated the worth of a videographer, seeing their video really made them relive the absolute magic of the day. Their advice, like that of so many brides and grooms, is not to sweat the small stuff: “If you have good food, good wine and good music, the guests will have the best day ever!” u

They describe their whole wedding day as “amazing”. “Paloma looked incredible when she walked down the aisle, and the reception was decorated amazingly. My sister sang in the church and at the wedding, which was also wonderful. What was truly amazing, however, was our common cousin and Paloma’s best friend getting proposed to during the throwing of the bouquet!” Paloma and Edgar have some sage advice for you would-be brides and grooms: “Be very sure of the step you are taking – it should be a lifetime decision based on companionship, trust and love. Their courtship had to weather a few changes. The first 2 years they spent in Durban while Michael was playing for the Sharks, before he moved to play for the Lions in Jo’burg; then they had a longdistance relationship for 2 years, until he was offered a contract with Western Province/Stormers. “We both fell in love with Cape Town and bought a twobedroom apartment in Sea Point. We lived in Cape Town for the past 2.5 years and recently moved to London. Mike is currently playing for Saracens.” For the proposal Mike surprised her with a night away at Tintswalo Lodge on the shoreline below Chapman’s Peak. “We decided to take a stroll along the rocks, and came upon a blanket beautifully laid with candles and champagne. Mike then started telling me how much he loves me, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I burst into tears of joy and of course said yes!” Their wedding ceremony took place in a garden overlooking the Crocodile River. “For both of us the highlight of the ceremony was seeing each other for the first time on the day walking down the aisle. We started the ceremony off by asking all our family and friends to turn around and take a selfie with us in the background, just for fun. During our ceremony we had a little visit from an elephant, which distracted our guests and pastor for a bit, but it made our ceremony even more special and unique.” Cara’s brother, Brandon, was MC, and there were many laughs throughout the reception. During the speeches there was a second little visit from the ellie. They cut the cake with a 1956 saber that had been used by Mike’s grandparents to cut their wedding cake. The first dance with Mike was to ‘Is this Love’ by Bob Marley. “My bridal party joined in, and then from there we danced and partied till 4.30am.” Cara says that the best advice and constant reminder she got from her bridesmaid, Chev, was to: “Just take in the moment as it goes by so quickly”. She says: “It’s very generic but was honestly the best advice ever – I really took in every moment and so my day didn’t seem to go by in the blink of an eye. There’s also a lot of pressure nowadays planning your wedding, especially for women, and so it is best to forget about the ‘show’ or what people will think; make it about you and your vibe.” u

Every wedding has its own story to tell. The bridesmaids have a special relationship with the bride, and a special story that will make you realise why these ladies were carefully selected by the bride to share in her celebration of love. Then of course there is the bride’s mother, who has shared beautiful moments with her daughter – whose wedding day will certainly become one of her most cherished and beautiful memories. Shiroko allows you to customise the jewellery worn on your wedding day to your individual preferences – for example, the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses or including a charm in a floating locket that truly captures the essence of the occasion. They also offer a host of ready to wear fine and fashion jewellery pieces for your special day. Either way, Shiroko will have you saying “I do!” to all these gorgeous pieces. u

Our My Wedding Day Celebration was held at Lourensford Harvest Market. It was a day filled with excitement, treatments, fashion, education and an amazing wedding market.

SARAH JANE FROM SHAKE AND BAKE ENTERTAINMENT WEARS DRESS BY JANITA TOERIEN

The goodie bags that everyone received with discount vouchers and sample items were worth over R1000, and the wedding service providers’ stalls that were on display were exquisite. The Harvest Market area included lounge pockets and food vendors as well as beautiful displays of everything that one could need for a wedding, from spectacular gowns and shoes to lingerie, favours and stationery. The Classrooms offered various services, with a studio open for a free engagement shoot by Joe Dreyer and make-up by Bobbi Brown. Classroom 1 offered hand treatments and advice on scent combinations by Jo Malone London, with the Bobbi Brown ladies on standby to give advice and product education and do make-up touch-ups. Classroom 2 had a make-up workshop by Alicia Buckle. Classroom 3 had gorgeous lingerie by Inner Secrets, and great salon offers, treatment and beauty options from Samantics and Laser Beautique. Wedding maestro Aleit Swanepoel, who has offices at Lourensford, was the MC, and he also gave a brief chat on wedding etiquette, which is covered in more depth in this issue (see. p. 7).

Market Ria Prinsloo from Herbalife was inspiration in living form in terms of body shape, herself having lost 14 kg using this product. Then followed an on-stage demonstration of wedding make-up options from Bobbi Brown, followed by an inspiring fragrance talk by Jo Malone. Our Publishing Editor Susan Smit took a few minutes out to thank and welcome everybody, before the beautiful fashion show took to the ramps, with garments ranging from classic to avant garde, and including bridal, groom and best man’s wear. Designers whose clothes were featured include Ever After Bridalwear, Olivelli, Jacques le Grange Couture, Janita Toerien, Evodia, Eurosuite and Wedding Bells Suit Hire. They also showcased beautiful bouquets and flower crowns by Paramithi. Live music added to the atmosphere. Janita Toerien then gave a presentation on bespoke wedding gowns and how to choose the right dress for your body shape.

HONEYMOON | THE PARK HYATT ZANZIBAR

The Park Hyatt Zanzibar is not only the first new hotel in Stone Town, it is also the only five-star property in Stone Town. Everything about this venue shrieks five stars. The My Wedding Day team got to hold a magnificent fashion shoot there (see p. 162), and to experience to the full the splendour of this superlative wedding and honeymoon venue. WORDS BY SUSAN SMIT Marcela Herrendoerfer, General Manager of Park Hyatt Zanzibar, told me that that the brand is committed to creating rare, intimate and unforgettable experiences. They certainly deliver on their promise. Situated on the beachfront in Stone Town (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000), it offers guests easy access to both the city and the beach – and magnificent views of both. The superb views are not only to be seen outside though, since the interior of this hotel, with its exquisite décor and wood carving detail – has to be seen to be believed. It manages to maintain the understated elegance of a bygone era, while allowing guests to enjoy all the modern-day conveniences of a 21st century hotel. The Park Hyatt Zanzibar is housed in two buildings. The Mambo Msiige (meaning ‘not to be copied or imitated’), steeped in history, grace and mystique, with roots dating back to the 17th century, houses the reception area and library as well as allowing easy access to the infinity pool and patio. This UNESCO heritage building is an architectural gem, featuring intricate carvings and centred around a peaceful courtyard. The new and purpose-built Zamani Residence of the hotel connects to Mambo Msiige, blending old history and contemporary charm, while embracing Swahili culture with a blend of Arab, Persian, Indian and European influences. Claire Craig of WA International was the interior designer on the Park Hyatt Zanzibar, and says “Fixtures and furnishing included ethnic-inspired fabrics in trendy colours, and traditional Arabic patterns laser-cut in metal and formed to create light fixtures which cast the most beautiful light and shadows. The décor includes sofas from Ralph Lauren and ethnic-inspired fabrics from Robert Allan.” PAGE 182

HONEYMOON | THE PARK HYATT ZANZIBAR

The hotel has 67 spacious guest rooms and 11 suites. Some rooms have private balconies, allowing guests to enjoy the views from the comfort of their own room. The oceanfront rooms feature spectacular views of Dhow Harbour and the Indian Ocean, not forgetting the beach, which is easily accessible from the patio. I could not leave my camera anywhere, because every minute I would see another glorious potential shot! The Presidential Suite is out of this world, with stunning views of the Indian Ocean as well as Stone Town from the huge private patios adjacent to the suite. It is very private and like a penthouse, with a massive kitchen, private dining room and magnificent bathrooms. The hotel’s Anantara Spa offers a selection of body treatments, massages and a hair salon. Guests may also enjoy the exclusive oceanfront infinity pool and a fully equipped fitness centre featuring state-ofthe-art cardio and strength-training facilities. In terms of weddings, a marquee can be set up outside in the most beautiful garden you have ever seen, also overlooking the ocean, or a smaller, more intimate wedding can be held in a cottage-style unit. The Grand Room inside the hotel offers a classy and stylish setting for a wedding with around 100 guests, while a private dining room can cater for about 40 people. Whatever setting you choose at this hotel, you can create a masterpiece wedding. They have a wedding coordinator on site who is able to see to all of the arrangements, from décor and flowers to the cake. One of the other things that blew me away was the sunsets, they were truly amazing. You can have lunch or dinner outside on your own balcony. The seafood was amazing, but their signature banana cheesecake had us hunting for it every day. The staff can only be described as spectacularly attentive. There are a variety of tours available to Park Hyatt Zanzibar guests, which include a day trip in a Dhow and lunch on the sandbar. You can also be taken to a private island with your wedding guests (only 30 minutes away), say the day after the wedding, and have a private barbeque there.

A walking tour of Stone Town and the historical surroundings will lead you through the rich aromas of spices, perfumes and local handcrafts. This was also the birthplace of Freddy Mercury, and the house where he grew up (now called Mercury Mansions) is a short walk from the Park Hyatt Zanzibar and one of the highlights of any Stone Town walking tour. There is also a Turtle Sanctuary on the island as well as a Butterfly Aviary (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere). At the Park Hyatt Zanzibar it is all about service, views, food and décor – there is not one thing I could fault, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I can’t wait to go again. Our photographer on the fashion shoot, Esther Reid, describes her experience of the hotel: “Simply beyond

Getting there We flew Mango Airlines from O.R. Tambo International Airport, it took 3 hours. See www.zanzibar.park.hyatt.com

PAGE 183

breathtaking! The sheer luxury and opulence of this magnificent hotel with its tranquil charm left me feeling pleasantly indulged, as did the splendid decor, the elegance of the furnishings and the friendly, gracious staff who always went the extra mile to ensure our comfort. The crisp linen and the citrus-scented bath products left me feeling pampered and totally indulged. I liked the fact that the hotel was centrally situated in Stone Town, with an abundance of interesting shops, markets and restaurants within short walking distance. However, once inside the tranquil, elegant hotel one becomes totally oblivious to the hustle and bustle of city life – and relaxation, good food and excellent service become the order of the day.” u

REAL HONEYMOON | AZURA QUILALEA PRIVATE ISLAND

AZURA QUILALEA PRIVATE ISLAND, MOZAMBIQUE

Chelsea and Patrick Maloney won a stunning honeymoon by winning a My Wedding Day competition. They got to stay on Azura Quilalea Private Island, Mozambique, from 25 to 28 September 2015. We asked them all about their stay. See their real wedding feature on p. 86.

PAGE 186

REAL HONEYMOON | AZURA QUILALEA PRIVATE ISLAND

Chelsea and Patrick had such a great time on the honeymoon that they won from us that Patrick has already promised his wife that they will go back to Azura Quilalea Private Island for their tenth wedding anniversary! Says Chelsea: “We were treated like royalty as soon as we stepped onto Mozambique’s soil in Pemba. As we got to the island we were met by Leon, the manager, and had a short walk to the reception. On the way we got to look at the giant baobab trees and were given cool cloths to freshen up a bit by our private butler! Yes – our own butler for the honeymoon – and he was the most wonderful man, dealing with Patrick’s huge appetite at breakfast and lunch. “All the dining was on the island, and each meal was special. Breakfast was under trees on the beach, with a huge selection of seafood, health breakfasts, cooked breakfasts (try the homemade muesli, and Pat suggests getting the omelette with every topping imaginable). Lunch was served in special locations, such as a private picnic on Turtle Beach. “The beach was closed off just for us, with picnic foods and a cooler box packed with Savanna and 2M beer. “Dinner was either surrounded by candlelight on the beach, or you could have it served in your suite overlooking the ocean. The food was mind-blowing, especially the fresh seafood caught by the locals and cooked to perfection.” We asked them to tell us about special activities and moments, but they say there were so many, it is difficult to choose. “We loved our bed covered in flowers every evening, and French champagne on arrival, as well as a surprise Baobab bath with more champagne. We also loved the cocktail of the day served while watching the sunset on the beach, and the private beach where you can go skinny-dipping and then laze under the shade of a baobab whilst enjoying your picnic lunch. Snorkelling the reefs was also great. From beginning to end, it was the most magical and romantic holiday of our lives!” Highlights for them were the romance of the island: “Every detail has been so thought out. There are only 9 chalets on the island, so it is very private. The staff were exceptional; they really make you feel special during your honeymoon.”

So what did they learn about each other on their honeymoon? Chelsea: “That Patrick loves to nap during the day and eat everything on the menu.” Patrick: “That Chelsea gets up early on holiday as she is too excited about the day ahead. That we battle to stop laughing once we start, even if it’s about something silly.” On departure they were walked to the helipad and given water for their short journey back to Pemba. “In Pemba airport the check-in for our next flight was all done for us. Real VIP treatment! It was incredible travelling in a helicopter over beautiful mangroves, turquoise waters and tiny islands. Thank you My Wedding Day for this incredible experience!” u

If you ever dreamt of a wedding on a farm, but with all the comforts you could possibly think of, then Inhoek is the place for you. VENUE | INHOEK

Situated exactly 3.5 km outside of Arniston, this family-run farm offers you the tranquillity of the outdoors while having the seaside close by – thus offering the best of both worlds. ‘Props’ for your wedding include the spectacular surrounds, Nguni cattle and their young, and orphaned donkeys (who always appreciate an apple or two). Far removed from the daily grind, Inhoek offers private, intimate and secluded accommodation as well as spacious and professional wedding facilities. What started as a small project to renovate the existing cottages on what was once her father’s farm turned into the realisation of a vision.

Kyra Schlesbusch realised what a special space Inhoek was, and that it needed to be shared! She has since turned it into a stylish wedding and event venue with incredible attention to detail, where your every need will be met. Add to this the fact that Arniston beach is so close by, with all its hotels and spas, and you have the perfect location. This spacious facility is perfect for weddings or formal functions and houses up to 150 people comfortably inside. For larger parties marquee tents can be erected. The barn is perfect for smaller, more intimate functions. This one-stop venue also includes a small chapel, as well as a professional catering kitchen.

In keeping with their local theme, they have partnered with local preferred service providers to satisfy any catering, photographic, stylist or wine requirements. Accommodation includes a farmhouse, beach cottage and charming selfcatering cottages with natural light streaming in. Experience the tranquillity of the farm around you while relaxing in your own lounge with a fireplace for the colder days and a patio for a braai overlooking the beautiful surroundings. Kyra’s passion for making your wedding day unique and memorable is evident in her little personal touches. This is also a great place to host bridal or groom’s parties, with an elegant wine barn.u

HONEYMOON | CAMBODIA

WORDS BY GILLIAN MCLAREN

From the moment you board the Aqua Mekong, you are welcomed and pampered by professional, caring staff. You are sure to have a “Wow” response to the spacious cabin that is to be your home and base while getting to know the mighty Mekong River and surrounding delta. Journey to thriving cities, agrarian villages with Chinesestyle pagodas and Buddhist temples, floating villages such as Kompong Luong and busy floating markets, in satisfying luxury. More than just a cruise ship, the Aqua Mekong is a floating five-star boutique hotel, with only 20 cabins and a generous staff to guest ratio. From your king-sized bed, resplendent with crisp white linen, enjoy gazing at the water of this fascinating working river, the variety of vessels that use her for transport and the tropical vegetation of her banks. Choose a cabin with a balcony housing a day bed and table with chairs - so you can be outside to watch the sand dredgers as they haul sand to be exported, sea-going ships, container vessels and fishing boats of many kinds. Spot coconuts or water hyacinth drifting past, brahminy kites plunging kamikazestyle into the water to catch a fish, pied kingfishers on the branches of tropical

trees, and a white-bellied sea eagle soaring above the wake. Your bathroom has twin basins, a strong shower, soft white towels, a large window with permanent shutters, as well as a charming porthole with one-way glass, to peep out at villages with bamboo homes on stilts, or gentle sunsets reflected in the waves. Unpacking your clothes into an ample wardrobe is so civilized, compared to living out of a suitcase. Each morning your laundry is whisked away and appears clean and folded in the evening. After each excursion staff graciously take your shoes and clean them for you. Your preferences are all carefully noted and remembered. This is service excellence that is discreet and sensitive, never intrusive. You are free to enjoy meals on your own or to join guests you have befriended, in the dining room with a view, situated aft. Styled by Consultant Chef David Thompson, gourmet Asian and Western food is unfailingly delicious and prettily presented. One night a feast is offered on the foredeck, alongside the infinity swimming pool, when you can get to know fellow passengers and the hosts of the cruise. with guests and even does some shopping for a lady who wishes to remain on board. It is not easy to leave the comfort and elegance of Aqua Mekong, but try not to miss too many of the on- and offshore excursions. Four private tenders motor to selected remote villages where you learn about crafts that have been practised there for millennia. It is possible to buy wares ranging from silverware to pottery, silk garments, stoneware and carvings. In each village local people demonstrate how the items are made. Few tourists get to visit these authentic working villages to see the keen pupils in the little schools, receive blessings from a monk in the local temple, bicycle on simple tracks to the music of sweet hellos from smiling children, or taste delectable fruit shared by generous families. This is a photographer’s nirvana, so make sure to pack a camera or two. Excursions in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, are particularly interesting, but heart-breaking. Both The Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum require courage to take in. They are memorable, sobering and help one to understand the torrid history of this nation. Free until lunchtime, you may do as you please. Some enjoy resting in their cabin or browsing in the library. Others watch a movie in the ship’s theatre or exercise in the onboard gym. A favourite pursuit is lying on sunloungers to survey the passing scene, sipping a Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic with a slice of lime. Romantic sunsets viewed from your cabin, twin massages in the onboard Spa, delectable food styled by the Michelin-starred chef and intriguing excursions - an Aqua Mekong cruise will be an exceptional start to your married life. You will never forget the reflection of the moon broken into shards of light by the gently flowing south-east Asian Mekong River. u

HONEYMOON | CAMBODIA

AMANSARA, AMAN RESORTS, SIEM REAP, KINGDOM OF CAMBODIA Extremely private, exclusive and tasteful, Amansara is a desirable space for honeymooners to explore the famous Siem Reap and relax in unpretentious luxury in this remarkable foreign land.

The Cambodian people are notably warm, kind and have a ready smile. At Amansara all staff greet you by performing a respectful Sampeah, with palms held together at chin level and a slight bow of the head. Although unobtrusive, the staff ensure that your every request is kindly and discreetly met. Your suite is kept immaculate and each time you return, it has been refreshed in your absence. Amansara - the former guesthouse of King Sihanouk - has been tastefully restored. Twenty four luxury suites are set in a garden compound, close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor, with its splendid temple ruins (making it easier to visit these popular marvels before the madding crowds arrive). Each suite has an open-plan design, floor to ceiling glass windows in front, and finishes in stone-coloured terrazzo and black timber. A wide verandah area leads to a large, completely private plunge pool with an adjacent water feature with channels that are home to small fish and lotus flowers.

White linen on the king-sized bed is impeccably laundered and fluffy white towels are provided in abundance. You can select your pillow preference from a menu of seven pillow types. All the preferences that you make known during your stay are stored on computer, to ensure that you get what you most like. The soap is natural and handmade in Cambodia, with subtle jasmine and rice powder. Lemongrass incense is available to enhance the sensual experience of your bath, with its floating fresh lotus flowers, which is run for you while you are away dining. A rain shower alongside a changing area looks out onto your pool. Each evening at turndown a delightful, tasteful gift is placed on your bed. Amansara’s dining room and lounge area was formerly King Sihanouk’s movie theatre. All meals served here are elegant a la carte, with only the freshest elements used. Try the Amok Drei - one of the most famous dishes of Cambodia, where freshwater fish is steamed in a banana leaf with spicy

coconut. The chef bakes cake, tarts and wicked brownies each day, which are freely available to guests. Wheat-free cookies are also offered. In the evening snacks like cashews, olives and peanuts are provided with sunset drinks, then hot deep-fried spring rolls, satay or something hot is served. Dinners are delectable and artistically presented. If you want to try a local restaurant, make it Cuisine WatDamnak, an outstanding fine-dining experience and unique in Siem Reap. A Khmer house has been decorated stylishly but minimally, to provide a tranquil ambience with a choice of three separate dining areas. Chef Joannès Rivière sources fresh local ingredients - some of them unusual or rare - to combine in an innovative way, to serve Cambodian taste sensations for his dégustation menu, which is changed every Tuesday. Make sure to book in advance. At Amansara local artists using traditional Cambodian instruments provide music. Khmer classical dancers

sometimes perform in the garden next to the communal swimming pool. Some evenings the Landmine Survivors Cambodia performers play band music, which is poignant to witness. Amansara has several community projects, where they give back to local communities. In the Amansara Spa Dalay, a blind masseur, gives sensitive, intuitive massages. This experience is not to be missed. Make sure also to attend the highenergy, enthusiastic and professional show at Phare Cambodian Circus, which is also a way to contribute to a school where orphans, street children and youngsters from struggling families are educated. Consider using ABOUTAsia Travel to help you set up your honeymoon, including accommodation and tours, in Cambodia. They take great personal care of you, from your arrival at Phnom Penh - through Siem Reap and whichever places you visit - back to your departure flight. I felt shepherded and safe with each English-speaking guide, with drivers in well-kept tuk-tuks, on motorbikes or in air-conditioned cars. Guides know the best times to visit popular sites like Angkor Wat and the lesser known but stunningly beautiful temples. ABOUTAsiaTravel will personalise your trip itinerary, with sensible advice that only local people would think to give. Amansara offers some curated experiences, where you are thoroughly spoiled and pampered. Venture to their Traditional Khmer House at Sra Srang for a pleasant drive through the countryside - with its rice paddy fields, water buffalo, Brahmin cows and slender-limbed Cambodian people - followed by a breakfast of Khmer delicacies. Each time you leave the Amansara property you are offered a bottle of cold water and, should you need one, a delicate reed basket with some delicious food is prepared in advance. When you return you are warmly greeted by name, offered iced water and a cold, lightly scented towel to refresh yourself. After the excitement of your adventures in the sultry heat of tropical Siem Reap, it is bliss to return to your spotless haven at Amansara. u

HONEYMOON | LONG BEACH

One of the newest resorts on Mauritius, Long Beach Golf & Spa Resort marries minimalist eco-glam with high-adrenaline thrills and impeccable conservation credentials. Ultra-contemporary in design and occupying a 59-acre site on the east coast’s Belle Mare Peninsula, Long Beach – a R582 million development on the grounds of the former Le Coco Beach Hotel – was built entirely along eco principles. Solar panels produce hot water, sun protection frames reduce the need for air-conditioning, and ecolighting features throughout. Completed in 2011, everything from Le Coco Beach Hotel was recycled, including 500 000 palm trees and lush botanical heritage. Restaurants, shops and bars surround a central piazza, while the adjoining 1.3 km beach – the biggest in Mauritius – offers a boathouse and exhilarating array of water sports. Long Beach’s worldclass facilities make it the destination of choice for families, honeymooners, business and solo travellers. Of the 255 rooms (all of which face the sea) most blend seamlessly with the extensive gardens and 109 m² of private beach space. Twenty-nine are 86 m² family rooms, while Long Beach also has 140 well-appointed superior rooms (many interconnecting), with clean lines, lofty spaces and light tones. Standard amenities include 32’’ flat-screen satellite TV, wi-fi access, minibar, tea- and coffee-making facilities, clock radio, safe, hairdryer, individually controlled air-con and electrical shaver points (110/220 volts). With two bars and five restaurants – three surrounding the piazza – Long Beach offers memorable meals and culinary escapades for every palate. The service buggy brings refreshments and snacks to guests soaking up the sun from 10h00 until 17h00. Constructed around an area filled with

endemic vegetation and a lake, at the Long Beach Sea Spa a team of 14 expert therapists administers an array of healing treatments. There are 12 treatment rooms, including two for couples, a hammam, and a hair salon. Apart from the inviting lagoon, there are four swimming pools. There is also a fully equipped gym complete with steam room, lap pool, and one of the biggest climbing walls on the island. Other land sports include tennis (four floodlit tennis courts), golf, badminton, billiards, archery, croquet, basketball, volleyball, beach cricket, soccer, cycling and guided mountain bike excursions. Watersports include an undersea walk, parasailing, super tubing, kayaking, windsurfing, snorkelling, laser-sailing, paddle-boating, banana boating, canoeing, kite surfing, hobie cats, glass-bottomed boat rides, and water-skiing. Long Beach is renowned for its breathtaking entertainment. With three in-house deejays and at least four outsourced groups, Long Beach guests see a different show every evening with a four-day rotation. Shores Bar also has a live band every evening. An hour’s drive from the airport and one hour from Port Louis, Long Beach rubs shoulders with O&O Le St Geran , Ambre, and the legendary Shangri-la’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa – all members of the World Leisure Holidays group, which has special packages to suit all pockets. u See World Leisure Holidays, www.wlh.co.za.

HONEYMOON | BOTSWANA

DUBA PLAINS CAMP, OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA Set on an island in a private concession, far northwest of Maun, Duba Plains Camp is isolated and completely private, with just six well-appointed tent villas offering a truly exclusive experience. WORDS BY GILLIAN MCLAREN

PAGE 200

HONEYMOON | BOTSWANA

Forging through the waters covering the track in the Okavango Delta in a Landcruiser safari vehicle, I realise why it sports a snorkel and extra-high and wide tyres. I have to lift my feet as the water rises over the base and covers the floor. Thick dark mud is the next challenge, skilfully traversed by Gakologelwang Moketsi, the adroit guide from Duba Plains Camp. After gazing at the Delta with awe from the plane that flew me into this remote region, I am thrilled to explore the terrain and revel in its beauty. Red lechwe antelope with glossy russet hides jump through the water, creating spray and droplets that sparkle in the sunlight. Rotund hippos grunt, call and splash loudly. Basking in the warmth of a sandbank, 2 metre-long water monitors glide into a stream. Beneath tall jackalberry trees are only six Meru-style tents, separated from one another by vegetation to ensure privacy. Each has a splendid view of the lagoon and floodplains beyond, which I enjoy from a deckchair on the covered wooden deck in front of my tent. Although the camp has a rustic feel, the well-concealed tent villas are well appointed and elegant inside. Furniture is mostly antique and includes a sizeable bed canopied by a mosquito net, plus a pretty desk, Persian carpets and bolsters. At the back of the tent is a well-lit bathroom area, with a shower and organic soaps. A highlight is an outside shower beneath the trees. I placed my fluffy white towel on a branch in the sunshine, so had a deliciously heated wrap. Tent villa number six, favoured by honeymooners, has double showers. Great attention is paid to detail here. You will find a handwritten welcome card and a small gift made by local people on your bed when you arrive. In winter hot water bottles are slipped into your bed before you retire. I thoroughly enjoyed the various ways in which I was pampered by the staff. There is a certain something about sipping a Tanqueray gin and tonic with a slice of lime from a pewter goblet. Lunch is presented at a large communal table, always immaculately and imaginatively set and decorated, near the swimming pool. If you prefer to dine as a couple, they will quietly set up an intimate space for you. Dinner is also a communal table, with crystal wine glasses, pretty cutlery and pewter sculptures of leopard or lion. Conversation is lively, with the day’s sightings being a favourite topic.

PAGE 201

HONEYMOON | BOTSWANA

Each evening one of the guides joins the party, so you can draw on their extensive knowledge of the bush by asking questions. Duba Plains Camp is particularly fortunate to have a consummate chef, Pierre van Zyl, who lights up when he speaks about food and excellent wine. His food can only be described as gourmet dining, and would be right at home in a tasting kitchen in any international city. The wine list is small but impressive. You don’t have to brave the waters and marsh mud to see game and birds if you are not in the mood for adventure. The camp is unfenced, so game can wander through at any time. Being in such a truly pristine, far-flung spot is a profound and almost spiritual experience. u

Forever begins here The Seychelles Islands… where romance is always in the air. Very few places on earth possess the same charm and natural allure as sensual Seychelles when it comes to choosing an idyllic venue for a wedding, anniversary or that impromptu, romantic break. A Seychelles wedding makes a lot of economic sense when compared with the costs of tying the knot at home. When planning a wedding in Seychelles, it’s also handy to know that Seychelles is one country that does not require a visa from anyone. All that is required to enter the country is a return ticket, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds for the stay to qualify for a one-month visa. Also, hotels in Seychelles perform only one wedding per day, so clients are assured of the wedding team’s full attention, right down to the minute details. Seychelles is the perfect backdrop for a wedding, honeymoon or indeed any type of romantic break. Here, among islands lapped by sapphire seas in the land of perpetual summer, there is a certain timeless quality to life that is hard to replicate anywhere else. World Leisure Holidays also specialises in honeymoons and weddings across the Indian Ocean: Mauritius, Zanzibar, Maldives, Mozambique, Reunion and Seychelles.
