Athlec Programs

A Guide for Coaches, Parents, and Student-Athletes

Purpose

The purpose of interscholasc extracurricular acvies – such as athlecs, performing arts, and clubs – are to engage students in meaningful experiences that promote personal growth, skill development, and social connecon.

These acvies align with and support the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District’s mission, vision, and overall strategic plan

Mission: Engage, Enlighten, and Empower

Vision: Learning and Leading for Tomorrow

Warrior Philosophies

The philosophies of the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Athlec programs focus on Unity, Growth, and Resiliency while ensuring that every student-athlete feels Valued, both as an individual Warrior and as part of the collecve Warriors family.

Unity: Collaboration and Shared Success - We are Warriors

Growth: Embrace the Journey, Learn from Mistakes

Resiliency: Building Strong Relationships Through Trust and Communication

Value: Every Player Matters, Every Effort Counts

Approaches to Parcipaon at

Different Levels

Middle School: exploraon, discovery, and parcipaon

Freshman Level: development, fundamentals, and commitment

J.V. Level: dedicaon, desire, and willingness to sacrifice for the good of the team

The Varsity Level is the culminaon of the athlec experience. Success is not solely defined by wins and losses, but by the quality of effort, performance, and how the team upholds the Warrior Philosophies in represenng the school and community.

Guiding Principles When

Determining Student Placement

When a coach iniates a student placement outside of the norm (i e a 9th grade athlete on the Varsity team), the Coach, Student-Athlete, and Parent, together need to answer these quesons:

Is a promoon in the best interest of the student’s development?

Is it ancipated that the student will receive significant playing me?

How is the culture and future of the program affected?

What consequences does the move have for all involved in the program?

We Are Warriors

Coaches

The WBSD athlec department expects each coach to create a posive and enriching experience for all parcipants in their sport. Coaches are responsible for making decisions that benefit the enre program, priorizing the well-being and development of each student-athlete They must foster an environment where athletes can grow both personally and athlecally, ensuring that each player feels supported and challenged.

Athletes

Parcipaon in athlecs is a privilege, not a right. All student-athletes are expected to uphold high standards in academics, behavior, and healthy lifestyle choices. We believe our athlec programs reflect the values of our school and community, which is why we hold our athletes to a standard of excellence both on and off the field.

Parents, Fans, and Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is a shared responsibility for coaches, student-athletes, parents, and fans. Parents play a key role in modeling good sportsmanship, helping studentathletes understand the true purpose of educaonal athlecs: to develop life skills while creang an enjoyable experience for all Parents should demonstrate qualies such as self-control, fairness, courtesy, and grace, whether in victory or defeat, at both home and away events. By doing so, they contribute to a posive and supporve environment for everyone involved.

Communicaon/Problem-Solving

Appropriate issues to discuss with coaches:

The treatment of your child, mentally and physically

Ways to help your child improve

Issues NOT appropriate to discuss with coaches:

Team strategy

Play calling

Other student-athletes

The 24 Hour Rule

This is a tool for giving "space and me" to allow discussions to occur in a producve environment Aer a game, waing for a day to discuss concerns with your child, or with a coach, will help remove the raw emoons that can cause a breakdown in the communicaon process.

Communicaon Steps

Have your child talk to the coach.

Schedule a parent meeng with the coach. When appropriate, the student-athlete should be a part of the meeng.

Schedule a meeng with the Athlec Director. When appropriate, the studentathlete and coach should parcipate in the meeng

Addional Communicaon Tools

- Monthly athlec department newsleers are shared district-wide at the beginning of each month.

- Student-athletes are invited to parcipate in a mid-season survey Student-athletes and parents are invited to parcipate in post-season surveys

- Communicaons buon on our athlec department website. Comments can be le anonymously or you can make a request for follow-up communicaon
