Athle c Programs

A Guide for Coaches, Parents, and Student-Athletes

The purpose of interscholas c extracurricular ac vi es – such as athle cs, performing arts, and clubs – are to engage students in meaningful experiences that promote personal growth, skill development, and social connec on.
These ac vi es align with and support the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District’s mission, vision, and overall strategic plan
Mission: Engage, Enlighten, and Empower
Vision: Learning and Leading for Tomorrow
The philosophies of the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Athle c programs focus on Unity, Growth, and Resiliency while ensuring that every student-athlete feels Valued, both as an individual Warrior and as part of the collec ve Warriors family.
Unity: Collaboration and Shared Success - We are Warriors
Growth: Embrace the Journey, Learn from Mistakes
Resiliency: Building Strong Relationships Through Trust and Communication
Value: Every Player Matters, Every Effort Counts
Middle School: explora on, discovery, and par cipa on
Freshman Level: development, fundamentals, and commitment
J.V. Level: dedica on, desire, and willingness to sacrifice for the good of the team
The Varsity Level is the culmina on of the athle c experience. Success is not solely defined by wins and losses, but by the quality of effort, performance, and how the team upholds the Warrior Philosophies in represen ng the school and community.
When a coach ini ates a student placement outside of the norm (i e a 9th grade athlete on the Varsity team), the Coach, Student-Athlete, and Parent, together need to answer these ques ons:
Is a promo on in the best interest of the student’s development?
Is it an cipated that the student will receive significant playing me?
How is the culture and future of the program affected?
What consequences does the move have for all involved in the program?
The WBSD athle c department expects each coach to create a posi ve and enriching experience for all par cipants in their sport. Coaches are responsible for making decisions that benefit the en re program, priori zing the well-being and development of each student-athlete They must foster an environment where athletes can grow both personally and athle cally, ensuring that each player feels supported and challenged.
Par cipa on in athle cs is a privilege, not a right. All student-athletes are expected to uphold high standards in academics, behavior, and healthy lifestyle choices. We believe our athle c programs reflect the values of our school and community, which is why we hold our athletes to a standard of excellence both on and off the field.
Sportsmanship is a shared responsibility for coaches, student-athletes, parents, and fans. Parents play a key role in modeling good sportsmanship, helping studentathletes understand the true purpose of educa onal athle cs: to develop life skills while crea ng an enjoyable experience for all Parents should demonstrate quali es such as self-control, fairness, courtesy, and grace, whether in victory or defeat, at both home and away events. By doing so, they contribute to a posi ve and suppor ve environment for everyone involved.
