MADE IN THE USA Keeping America Employed

Grant a Gift Foundation By Dawn Gibbons

pril is National Autism Awareness Month. Awareness is important because autism is a developmental disability that is not easily understood. Many recognize the autism ribbon because it is a collage of puzzle pieces. The puzzle signifies the complexity of autism spectrum disorders because no two autistic people are alike. Royal blue is the color of autism as blue represents hope. Hope is important because with awareness, early intervention, and evidence-based treatments, those living with autism can have happy and more productive lives.

Photo Credit: Lynda Tache and Grant a Gift Foundation

Few knew about autism 15 years ago when 1 in 150 children were being diagnosed with this social communication and behavioral challenge. Today, that number has increased by nearly 120% as 1 in 68 children are affected by autism and 4 out of 5 are males. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in our country (CDC). A local parent, Lynda Tache, lived this emerging epidemic. Lynda struggled to get answers for her son, Grant, when he showed signs of what was found to be autism. Once she was given the diagnosis her question became…“What now?” “What now?” is a typical question parents ask when hearing this diagnosis. Families touched by autism find the simplest tasks can be daunting, such as getting a haircut, shopping, going to the dentist, or spending a day at the park. Most children and families experience degrees of isolation with feelings of desperation because they don’t know where to turn. How many of us have seen young children acting up in the grocery store, screaming and pounding their feet on a cement floor in one of the aisles? Some people are bold enough to insist the parents get control of their child. Lynda, like many others,

witnessed society’s abuse as she struggled to help her son, Grant, conform to the world we live in and not the one he knew. Lynda is not one to sit on the sidelines, take verbal abuse, or accept “no” when it came to her son’s best interest. Lynda became diligent in finding the help Grant needed. Along the way she met other parents that were also struggling. Although Lynda had always been a private person, she made autism her personal and public mission for all southern Nevadans.

Lynda Tache and the Grant a Gift Foundation continue to make a difference and not just during the month of April. Grant a Gift Autism Foundation is helping families living with autism 365 days a year. For those seeking assistance please call 702-564-2453 or go to MV

In 2009, help was on its way for many families in Las Vegas. Lynda started a 501 (c)(3) named after her son, Grant a Gift Autism Foundation. And what a gift it has been for the community! Grant a Gift Foundation helps families realize they are not alone in their difficult journey. The foundation provides access to many community providers so families, including Lynda’s son, Grant, receive much-needed services. Grant is an amazing 14-year-old who is in regular 9th grade classes. He has friends and loves to edit YouTube videos. Now there is hope for Grant and many others to reach their full potential.

he sun is out and the warm weather is heading our way but let’s take a step back for a moment – how is that healthy New Year’s resolution? The statistics are sadly, against us. Studies show many ditch the promise for a healthier life before the first month of the year is over. However, don’t throw in the towel! A few self-proclaimed “losers” have tips on how to get back on the healthy track. Registered dietitian and nutrition expert Lisa Katic says to start at the beginning: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Getting the metabolism going can be crucial, as I learned a few years ago. As a morning show reporter for KTLA, I would begin my shift with nothing in my system, besides the obligatory coffee. It seemed “normal” to eat at 7 am, as opposed to 4 hours earlier, when my photographer and I hit the road. While an overnight meal seem seemed ridiculous, I realized, eating my first meal hours through my workday, didn’t make sense either. The first day I ate that homemade granola bar – well before the sun was up – was like waking up for the first time. In a way, I had more energy than ever before, just by fueling up.

Spring Forward With Your Skin

e’ve all been there…with dry lifeless skin as we transition from winter to spring. This year, change up your routine for better results. First, start by changing the products you moisturize your face with everyday. Switch to lighter creams and serums, and ditch the heavier creams that can potentially clog your pores. This is also a great time to trash any products you never quite got around to using that are well past their shelf life. Second, exfoliate! Nothing makes your skin feel its best than a great scrub. Personally, I prefer a sea salt scrub more than a sugar scrub. However, each type has its own benefits, so be sure and do your research for your body type before you make the plunge.

Tammy Kincaid

Third, indulge in an inviting, warm bath. Simply add your favorite essential oil and some bath salts and feel the stress of the day disappear. Despite the misconception that a warm bath will only make your skin drier—quite the contrary. It helps your skin absorb products better. Still not sure what’s best for your skin? For the ultimate in transitioning from winter to spring, leave it to the professionals, treat yourself to a spa facial or body scrub, and make way for perfectly glowing skin. Health and Beauty Spotlight

Jamie Lee Metz

By Erika Kimble Dermatology NP

our face is your calling card to the world. When the quest for beauty propels you to bid the application of acidic concoctions, or the razoring of facial fuzz by DermaBlade, you should only let a professional lay fingers on your face. Jamie Lee Metz is one such person. She has 15+ years’ experience owning Skin Fitness, as well as a newly formed venture called Dermaplane Diva. As a certified paramedical laser and master aesthetician, Jamie provides facials, skin care and tightening treatments, and hair removal methods such as the renewed trend of dermaplaning. Yet, her expertise and graciousness with clientele has not gone unnoticed, having been named as one of the Top 100 Women in MyVegas Magazine. Jamie believes she possesses the characteristics of “being an entrepreneurial spirit into innovation and being of service to the community.” She also states that her success in this field is imparted on the great mentorship she received from her own aesthetician as a young adult. Through the nudging of her mentor and friends, Jamie made a career change from modeling and real estate to obtaining licensure as an aesthetician. “I knew God had given me certain gifts, and if I had the opportunity to get my hands on somebody, that was it! I knew from day one that was my path,” Jamie said. Skin Fitness is a culmination of Jamie’s passion and experience in facial aesthetics. This is evident in her goals of operation. She advises that she wants to “continue to be innovative and develop new ways of doing things. That’s sort of what we’ve always been known for—taking what’s been considered the norm and creating a new path,” Jamie said. With the launch of Dermaplane Diva four months ago, Jamie is also on the cutting edge of beauty trends. “Dermaplaning is a safe way to exfoliate that allows us to remove dead skin cells across the surface as well as the vellus hair. It will take off 10 years in 10 minutes for most people. Compare it to HDTV and old TV,” stated Jamie. And for the age-old misconception that shaving hair will make it come in coarser, Jamie discredits

Jamie Lee Metz that idea. “What is, is. If you start with coarse hair you will end up with coarse hair.” Dermaplaning does not affect the hair root; it only trims the hair off the skin surface. For Jamie, wielding a DermaBlade or a pot full of facial concoctions is an easy day’s work, because she truly enjoys her job. She advises that this is one key to a successful business. For those wanting to follow such footsteps, she suggests to “Get mentored, be educated, believe in yourself, and surround yourself with great people, doing something you love.” MV

YVEGAS Magazine teamed up with the Radius Pool at the Stratosphere to host the first annual bikini contest this past July. Ten local Las Vegas ladies came together to compete for $1,000 cash and bragging rights at the hip pool intimately located on the 25th floor of the Stratosphere Hotel. The warm summer sun and upbeat music by DJ Liz set the scene for the exciting event. Other Las Vegas locals were invited to attend as they watched Jennifer Romas take first place. Russian beauties Luna Beasly finished second place, and Oksana Talantsev respectively finished third. The ladies chose what song they came out to and were judged based on physique, face, and personality. First place winner Jennifer Romas was in it to win it! Hire a nutrition coach - Let’s face it, there are millions of diets out there. They can be so confusing and nearly all of them are “general” or “fad” diets because none of them were made just for you, so what works for your body type might not necessarily work for mine. When you hire a nutrition coach, they customize your diet specific to your body type, activity level, weight, height and age. They will also take genetics into consideration and voila! You have a plan that you can follow that are specific to your goals. It also takes guesswork out of figuring out what to eat every day. You just simply follow the plan that is given to you and let them figure out what you should eat. Nutrition coaches don’t have to break the bank. There are many out there that will work out a monthly payment plan or a one-time fee that fits anyone’s budget. Health is always cheaper to maintain than it is to fix. Get a workout partner - It’s a lot easier to get through a workout with a partner especially if you haven’t made it a habit or a lifestyle yet, or are getting back in to it after a long break. Partners keep you accountable and help to keep each other motivated.

By Tamra Trainer Take daily supplements - As we get older our body needs extra vitamins and minerals. We are lacking in certain ones and our body takes them from our bones resulting in them becoming weak and fragile. This is mainly why we lose bone density when we get older. Remember to always check with your doctor before taking certain supplements. Be Disciplined to resist cravings - Your favorite sinful food will still be there in six weeks. We seem to get so attached to food. Whatever it is that you want to eat so badly, will still be there in 6-8 weeks. Reward yourself for reaching milestones with things other than food - We tend to want to celebrate our weightless success with a night of wining and dining which is counterproductive to what we are trying to do. We aren’t like our pets, so no need to use food as a reward for good behavior. Treat yourself to a spa day or a manicure/pedicure (and yes men can have nice nails too). Or an hour massage for those sore muscles. Until you get used to living a clean and healthy lifestyle, avoid social settings that will tempt you such as going to the movies where you are going to want an extra-large buttered popcorn or meeting up with friends at a restaurant. Be patient and get comfortable with the one body you will have for the rest of your life - Yo-yo dieting is a thing of the past. It is all about clean eating and healthy living plus making smarter choices. It is so much easier to maintain a healthy body than it is to maintain an unhealthy one! MV

You may also notice a couple of surprise nominees this year, who were unexpected to make these pages. However, we are proud to include them this year alongside the other winners, for even though we sometimes work in the same industries, we are all in this community together. We believe in the importance of featuring these nominees in a positive light, as we are all working in this incredible city for the greater good of the community in which we love. Here at Mark One Media, we represent faith and love, as well as fostering positive relationships with those whom work in the same industries beside one another. Las Vegas is a big city, small town… Honoring these spectacular ladies in a positive light is our goal. This year’s recipients are amazing women, who have achieved great success and contributed in more ways than one in Las Vegas and have influenced the community we live in. Enjoy!   MV

No Comfort in The Growth Zone

Juliana Whitney Liza Henley J & L Inspire

ave you ever heard the expression “there is NO GROWTH in the COMFORT ZONE?” Why is that? What does that even mean? It means that growth is painful.  Absolutely worth it, but incredibly uncomfortable.  Once we get a hold of the concept of no growth in the comfort zone, it is time to face the reality that there is also NO COMFORT in the GROWTH ZONE.   Growth is something that we all wish to achieve at some point whether it be health improvement, career advancement, income increase, relationship quality, skill set, or any area of life. Growing is about getting from where you are now, to where you want to be. You experience the uncomfortable parts of growth so that you can live the life you desire and be the person you want to be.  The discomfort has a purpose; it plays a powerful part in your journey. “I’ve learned that for many people, change is uncomfortable. Maybe they want to go through it, and they can see the benefit of it, but at a gut level, change is uncomfortable.” ~Mitchell Baker

What is so uncomfortable about growth? You are shattering parts of what and who you used to be. You are letting go of the parts of who you were that are not congruent with who you are becoming.  Stop identifying with whatever it is that you do not want and start identifying with whatever it is you do want and who you wish to be.   It can often be difficult to identify your growth on a day-to-day basis which can be discouraging.  Some days you may even wonder if you are making any progress at all.  Keep challenging assumptions, keep pushing the boundaries, and keep stepping beyond the confines of your OLD habits.  Be patient and kind to yourself. Have faith in your capabilities, and one day it will be clear how far you have come; how those little growth steps that you were

taking every day added up and you became who you were working to become. You lost that weight, became a partner, quit smoking, got healthy, found the love of your life, advanced in your career; YOU have grown. “It’s not the big things that add up in the end; it’s the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary.” ~Darren Hardy 5 tips to surviving the uncomfortable parts of the growth process 1. Write down your clear-cut vision of what it is that you are growing towards. 2. Understand WHY you want to make the changes. 3. Check in to measure your progress now and again. 4. Adjust the steps needed to be taken going forward based off of your measurements. 5. Embrace and enjoy the journey as it truly uncovers your greatness within.

Seeking comfort is natural; however, truth be hold it will never enable growth. Our wish for you is to enable your growth, unleash your power, and achieve massive amounts of abundance. MV Cheers to your GROWTH! XO, J+L J+L Inspire is a personal development and lifestyle brand led by Juliana Whitney and Liza Henley. Samira Knight of Tarkanian & Knight Law Group

Steve Dimopoulos of Steve Dimopoulos Law

Child Support Q: I was divorced four years ago, my ex has been taking deductions from my child support stating that he is making less money now, but in fact he is making more money. Can I take him back to court to re-evaluate the payments and the situation? He also has not followed through with other court ordered things such as Dr. Visits, CoPays for our child, etc... Susan B. A: The simple answer would be yes. If he is not following a Court Order, you can take him back to Court. He cannot unilaterally change a Court Order because he feels like he should be paying less. You may want to consider getting set-up with the child support division. Then if he believes that he makes less money, he would have to prove it to them. It would be less expensive and easier for you, than hiring an attorney to fight for back child support.

Accident Q: I was driving and had an accident. When I called my insurance company they said I was not insured due to a payment not received. My agent says he didn’t get my money but I did drop it off at his office in cash, unfortunately then I lost my receipt. Now the insurance company from the other person wants to sue me. Do I have any defense, or can I sue the agent who took my money and says he didn’t get it? I think the agent who took my payment didn’t apply it to my account and now I do not know what recourse I have, if any. Please advise what can I do moving forward? Juan V A: Proving your insurance company received payment may be difficult based upon the facts presented. Fortunately, proving payment may not be necessary.  Some insurance policies and statutes require your carrier to notify you of any delinquency before terminating coverage.  NRS

Child Support Q: My ex and I were never married and have been separated over 15 years. He works as a carpenter under the table while collecting unemployment in another state and claims to the Judge each time we appear in court that he is now a stay at home dad taking care of his other children and cannot obtain employment. He also doesn’t provide health insurance as the court mandates. I have not had an attorney for quite some time. Is there any way to prove that he is making money under the table in another state, not paying taxes and not paying his child support? And what authority does the DA have in this instance? Is there anything I can do to bring this to the attention of the DA’s office? Sarah D. A: Yes, you can prove that he is making money under the table. Usually this can be done by a personal investigator, typically ones the focus in accounting and finance. If you have registered your case with the District Attorney’s office, they typically will conduct an investigation beyond the income they report.

687B.320(2) in particular provides that a policy remains effective at least ten days beyond cancelation. Thus, your carrier may be obligated to extend coverage despite your inability to prove payment of your premium.   It is unlikely the insurance company for the other driver has a legitimate claim against you if he or she intends to sue you.  Generally such lawsuits are predicated upon the legal theory of negligence (failure to use reasonable care).  Possible defenses include not being at fault for the accident.  You did not provide sufficient facts upon which to evaluate the merit of any claims or defenses.   Potential legal theories upon which to sue your agent include embezzlement (misappropriation of funds left in one’s trust); however, proving your case may be difficult as discussed above.  MV

* Please be advised that you should still seek legal advice to further elaborate, this is a general summary and proper legal advice cannot be given in such a forum.

How to Use Hashtags to Market & Grow Your Business on Twitter

By Chaibia Sarhrou

ssuming you already have a Twitter page for your business, hashtags should also be a big part of your social media marketing strategy. But in case you are not familiar with hashtags, let me give you a brief definition. Hashtag is a word or phrase followed by the hash or pound symbol (#) in order to identify messages around a specific topic or category of interest. Clicking on a work that has a hashtag in any message shows you all other Tweets using that same hashtag. Now that you have an idea on what hashtags are, let’s dive in to how you can use them to market and grow your business:

Use them to be found: Make sure to use commonly used hashtags in your tweets so they are easy to find and show up on searches. Keep in mind that your hashtags need to be relevant and simple. My favorite tool for determining which hashtags to use is You can type in the Twitter handles of the leaders in your industry and Twitonomy will give you a list of their top 10 hashtags. Why reinvent the wheel? Use them to monitor your online reputation: Search for hashtags related to your brand or product on a regular basis. This will allow you to see what users are saying about you. People will have conversations about you, your service or your product. You might as well be in the know and part of the conversation. Use them to target your best audience: You can send your message to a specific audience by using relevant hashtags. For instance if you are a real estate agent, you can use a hashtag like #homeforsale, then anyone who’s searching Twitter for that hashtag will be able to see your message.

Use them to keep an eye on your competitors: Search for hashtags with your competitors’ brand, product or service. It’s always good to see what people are saying about them and how they’re handling their customer service through social media. This will allow you to find ways to set yourself apart and provide a better service/product to your customer.

Use them to promote your events, deals or contests: Come up with a catchy, easy to remember hashtag for your event, promotion or contest to make it easy for people to share. Have your followers use that hashtag in their tweets, this will also make it easy for you to track your campaign.

I want to leave you with one final tip; when it comes to social media marketing, consistency in delivering value to your followers is a big key to success. Have fun tweeting! J MV

Are You Flipping Crazy?

Gabriella DeBartoli and Matthew Beach

es, there are still “crazies” flipping houses in Las Vegas! Why you might ask? Because there are diamonds out there if you know where to look! According to Licensed Contractor owner/supervisor, Floyd Popple, also seen on “Flipping Las Vegas”, “each flip we sought out could make the investor upwards of $10,000.00, and/or a 10%-15% return on their investment.” Yes, in 2016 these deals still exist here in Las Vegas. Mark Shaffer of MyVegas magazine interviewed Matthew and Gabriella, licensed realtors with Las Vegas Realty, to obtain a better understanding of the secret to finding these diamonds in the rough. To give an example of their process, they walked us through their most recent deal here in the Las Vegas Valley, in which the property was originally purchased for $120,000.00 and is currently moving forward to closing in escrow. But first, it required extensive renovations, and not merely the sort of adding on an additional bedroom and bathroom, but a complete remodel of the property (including re-plastering of pool) all of which cost a total $40,000.00. However, the renovations added tremendous value: “The expectation is we will sell the home for $220,000.00” says Matthew Beach. Thus, the investor after commissions to the agents and paid renovations in full, made $50,560.00.

In the interview with Gabriella and Matthew, they offered some advice for new flippers. Matthew, a Las Vegas native, stresses that every investor needs a great team standing behind them. Investors who attempt to navigate the real estate market independently will find themselves at a competitive disadvantage. Any speculator can walk a property and get an idea of what the work may entail, but what recourse would they have if they later encounter unexpected surprises? Even the most novice of real estate investors will hire a contractor to come review the property prior to purchase, and an inspector to check for structural issues. All of these people are professionals and licensed in specific areas for a reason, and are relied upon heavily. Your Realtor® is just as important. There is exponential value and increased efficiency to be unlocked by retaining a top-notch team of experts in the field, and an experienced Realtor® is among them: “You have them, use them” says Gabriella, “These are not the kind of opportunities where you should step over dollars looking for dimes.” You need an agent to conduct the search for a suitable property, not just solely based on the property’s purchase price, but the comparable properties in the area and the trends of the market. However, there’s no right or wrong time to purchase. It will always boil down to the property, the margins for revenue, and the agent to agent relationship.

Agent to agent relationship, as most may wonder, why does this matter? Typically, these properties are steals, the proverbial “diamonds in the rough”. But you are unlikely to be the only investor with an agent bidding on your behalf. How do you get in front of the line of the bidding war? By having the most experienced, tenacious team fighting on your behalf. Matthew Beach, has been in the real estate game for the last two decades building relationships both locally and internationally. You also have to be fast – e.g Gabriella DeBartoli, originally from New York City, who at her core has an east coast work ethic that makes her work fast (think New York minute) and efficiently. Your Realtor®(s) are the most important part of your team. When flipping properties you’ll want to be sure to buy it right and sell it for a profit. After coordinating your team of agents, inspectors and contractors all else follows and voila! You’re flipping crazy! MV Editor Note: Matthew Beach and Gabriella DeBartoli, agents of Las Vegas Realty LLC, are always open to new clients. For more information please call 702-883-4221 for your consultation today and get flipping crazy in fabulous Las Vegas!

Pets and Seasonal Allergies By Stacy Rombach 702.367.4997

Katie and Rusty

Spring is in the air – the season of renewal. Nature is being reborn as buds and blossoms erupt in riotous colors. Unfortunately, spring also ushers in the allergy season. Many of us are well acquainted with the symptoms of seasonal allergies. However, many times we don’t think about seasonal allergies and our pets. Pets can also suffer from seasonal allergies and experience allergy-related reactions such as itching and paw licking, sneezing, watery eyes, and runny noses.

Diana & Glitter

Dana & Nala

Seasonal allergies cannot totally be prevented; however, there are a few things you can do to help your pets during this season. Pets’ paws are exposed to pollen from walking in the grass and on sidewalks and other pavements. They will lick their paws to remove the pollen. Wiping your pets’ paws with a wet cloth as soon as they come indoors helps remove much of the pollen. Wiping your pets’ coats with a wet cloth also helps remove pollen. Bathing your pets once or twice a week with a medicated shampoo reduces the allergens and alleviates some of the symptoms. It is important to watch for excessive scratching or other allergy symptoms. Contact your veterinarian if your pet is suffering from seasonal allergies. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to provide relief and lessen the severity of the itching and other symptoms. Springtime in Vegas is beautiful and offers you and your pet so many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors together – don’t let spring allergies keep you indoors! magine how good you feel after a nice hot shower, freshly done hair, and neatly trimmed nails. It may not seem like a big deal, but that basic grooming is just as important for your pet.  There’s a lot you can do on your own but if you can’t keep up with your pet’s needs, finding a good groomer is necessary. For me it was really important to find someone I could trust. I started by asking for references. Family, friends, the vet, pet trainers, even your local pet supply store are all good places to start. Then I did some homework. According to the humane society of the United States, some groomers are registered or certified by a grooming school, but no government agency regulates or licenses pet groomers. So it’s REALLY important to make sure the person is reputable. Check online to see if any complaints have been filed and ask for references from other clients. Next make an appointment to see the facility and don’t be afraid to ask for a look around. Also make sure you communicate with your groomer what you do and don’t want so everyone is on the same page. Most importantly, make the groomer a fun experience for your dog so they associate happiness with their day at the spa! MV

Put a Spring in Your Step!

on Instagram and Twitter By Megan Mathis (702) 269-9290

aving a home-based business can make it too easy to just stay busy and continue to make excuses to pass on exercising. I was opposed to forcing myself out for a drive to the gym, although I was not opposed to movement. I knew I would feel better, look better, and be more creative in my work.   So, instead of forcing myself to do something I didn’t love (or beating myself up for not doing it) I looked for an activity that I really enjoyed—I had to be motivated to leave my comfortable office and start moving.   After exploring many options available, one stands out to me the most: simply walking.   Walking is the purest life-giving activity you can do for yourself. Just Google the “benefits of walking,” and you will be amazed at the list of strong, healthy benefits.   Let’s face it: We live in an age of technology that keeps us sitting and barely breathing. Therefore, we must purposely make time to walk the dog, walk around the neighborhood, walk to the store, or just walk to the mailbox.   Another bonus when we walk is we cannot help but breathe—and breathe deeply. Oxygen repairs; it clears up the cloudy brain and restores life to your body. Taking a breath is the first thing we do when we are born, and it is the last thing we do when we die—I would say it is important.   Overall, walking will make you feel better, and in the springtime, when the weather is not too hot and not too cold, it can be the right time to add walking to your daily routine and not only put a spring in your step, but also keep it there! Negotiating Salary

hether you are looking for another job or are up for a promotion, the first thing that probably comes to your mind is money. “How much are you paying me?” is one of the first questions I wanted to ask when job offers were sent my way; however, I would recommend bringing up the subject only when it is clearly time to do so, and only if prepared with a proper strategy. As a student affairs program manager for The International School of Hospitality (TISOH), I often get asked by students about the right time to mention salary and compensation, and what is the best way to get the salary that you desire. Below are a few tried and true techniques you can use when it comes time to negotiate salary: Let the employer make the offer. Wait for your interviewer to initiate the conversation on salary. Once the discussion does come around to compensation, begin by discussing how your skills and experience will benefit the employer…and their bottom line.

By Anthony Lai

Demonstrate your value. Most employers don’t like to see a list of restrictions, or worse yet, an ultimatum in terms of compensation. Instead of making the negotiation completely about money, attempt to prove the unique value proposition you bring by way of your hiring. The employer wants you to constantly deliver your very best and, at the same time, ensure that they are getting sufficient return on their investment in you. Convince them that your salary is just that: an investment in the success of the organization. Counteroffer wisely, not frequently. I strongly advise all of my students to make only one counteroffer. Back and forth negotiations will annoy the employer and may result in revocation of the job offer. Make sure your counteroffer is within reason, and justify once again your value to the organization.

Scope out the competition. Find out how much competitors pay for similar job positions and responsibilities. Salary research mostly takes place on the Internet; develop at least an idea of what to expect when it comes to being fairly compensated for your services by looking at several different organizations. And remember…the Internet isn’t always correct, so expect some variation. Provide a range of pay. Should the employer inquire about your desired salary, provide them a range rather than a fixed number. This strategy gives the employer some flexibility to decide on your rate of pay. Most employers will initially propose a wage at the low end of the salary range, but you will have provided them clear limits on your expected compensation and on the scope of your negotiation.

Itsy Bitsy Ramen and Whisky

utside of the grocery aisle, ramen has always kind of been a mystery. While always a Chinatown staple, new restaurants serving this mystery food have popped up in most every area of town. One of us equates mystery with trepidation. Will I know the ingredients? Will I know how to order it? Will I like it? Well, we found our way downtown to Itsy Bitsy Ramen and Whisky to get answers to some of those questions. Nestled in the Ogden Condo Building, it has great access to street parking and was easy to get to.   We both loved the feel of restaurant. It was cool and funky. From the use of reclaimed wood on the walls to the artwork and over-the-top flowered wallpaper it was comfortable yet trendy at the same time.  Those are two words we don’t put together that often.   With the name whisky in the restaurant, one of us would be remiss not to indulge, and the Wandering Mule was her libation of choice. It combined Akashi White Oak Japanese Whisky (yes, spelled Whisky) with a fresh lime wedge, a float of ginger beer, and basil leaf. It was presented in a traditional copper mug engraved “drink smart”… so she did. The taste of lingering ginger and the smoothness of the whisky lasted throughout the meal.

By Michele Polci, CPCE, CMP & Lisa Lynn Backus, CPCE, CMP

One of us rarely drinks anything other than vodka and the Sugar Plum Fairy fit the bill. Vodka, plum wine, fresh lemon sparking sake and a floating purple orchid and sugared rim was perfect… and enjoyed with her pinky outward.   To go along with our libations we enjoyed the tempura vegetables and the pork pot stickers. The vegetables were cooked impeccably tendercrisp. The batter was light and airy, showcasing the vegetables picture-perfectly. We especially indulged in the zucchini and Japanese sweet potatoes. The sweet soy dipping sauce was a flawless accompaniment. The pot stickers were a pan-fried chewy awesomeness, paired with a spicy soy sauce.        For the ramen novice, the ordering process was super simple with a quick nod to our server Alexa and a finger point on the menu we picked skinny or thick noodles, toppings of tofu, corn, mushrooms and even Spam, then three selections of broth and extras including chili oil for some heat.  In our case we enjoyed thick noodles with a Tonkotsu broth. The dish was dressed festively with green onions, braised pork, bean sprouts and a soy-cured egg.  We added broccoli for good measure and a little crunch.  The ingredients married the broth so beautifully and we enjoyed just the warming effects of the soup.

So you might ask yourself where does the whisky part come into play at this urban-chic restaurant?  Well, you can pair your ramen with whisky like they do in Japan.  The libation choices are Japanese, American, Scotch & Irish.  Alexa informed us many guests actually pour their whisky directly into the ramen.  And how about the “Itsy”?  Well, you can find that all around the restaurant with their signature spider branding.   We adored sharing the brown rice bowl with salmon. The salmon was prepared just like we like it: pink and flaky. This colorful entrée was a culinary decoration of carrots, green onions and bean sprouts.   We ended the meal with Cookie and Cream Mochi, which had a slight suggestion of marshmallow flavor.   As we sat there enjoying our hipster status for the night, we exchanged smiles with the family next to us, including a mother and young son who were sharing their ramen “Lady and the Tramp” style.  Now that we know slurping is allowed, we’ll be coming back to unleash our inner child and perhaps to snag a youthful razorback uniform shirt with the very cool spider logo – and that’s what she said! No seriously, it’s that good.  Everything meshed very well inside the restaurant.  The décor, the music, the friendly staff, and the overall vibe.  Of course we had to try the Killer Shrimp.  It definitely lived up to its name.  The secret recipe was created by Lee Michaels, a well known rock musician who first made Killer Shrimp at home for his young children back in the 1980’s.  The kids kept asking their father, “Hey dad, can you make us some of that “Killer” Shrimp?”, and so the name was born.  With more than 25 years of history in California, Kevin Michaels, owner of Killer Shrimp, followed a lifelong dream of bringing the Killer Shrimp family restaurant to Las Vegas.  When you taste this dish, you can truly appreciate why the signature Killer Shrimp recipe is a family guarded secret that has never left the hands of the Michaels family.  The fresh shrimp is mixed with its proprietary spice blend and is simmered for 10 hours, creating

their famous Killer Shrimp.  It’s served with sliced French bread for dunking.  You have to try it to believe it!  Just because they have perfected the Killer Shrimp recipe, you won’t want to stop there.  Everything we ordered was equally impressive!  From the grilled chicken and carne asada tacos, the veggie hot wings (you will not believe are made from veggies!), “peel and eat shrimp”, and the flavorful Asian pork drumsticks.  We were convinced there was nothing on the menu that wasn’t equally as appetizing as the Killer Shrimp.  The Blackened Salmon Filet was served with incredibly flavored maple scented brown butter sweet potatoes and wilted spinach.  Another favorite among the Restaurant Review Crew was the Oysters.  Getting fuller by the moment, there was still a few things we had to try; the lobster mac n’ cheese and the garlic mashed potatoes.  I’ve eaten other lobster mac n’ cheese dishes, but the types of cheese and the quality of their version was fantastic!  The cheese

was so velvety and earthy; everyone at our table couldn’t get enough.  And with all of that incredible food, we also enjoyed the signature drinks on the menu.  With one of the top 10 mixologists in the country crafting libations for Killer Shrimp, it’s easy to understand how superb the drink menu is.  While the Black Tea Collins was my personal favorite being that my drink of choice includes vodka, the Westside is worth the mention.  It’s crafted with gin but if I’d tried it without knowing, I would have never guessed it.  The Black Tea Collins is a well thought libation with Beluga vodka infused with black tea, lemon, sugar, and a splash of soda water.  And all the specialty drinks are only $10!  It’s fair to say that Killer Shrimp does everything on the menuKiller!  Truly, nothing was overlooked with the opening of the Las Vegas location and we are fortunate to have this classic California restaurant.  The MYVEGAS Restaurant Review Crew was thoroughly impressed from start to finish and we will most definitely be back!  If you have yet to enjoy Killer Shrimp, stop by for lunch or dinner.  You will be glad you did.  Killer Shrimp features Original Mondays and Killer Shrimp is served for the original price of $9.95 all day long!  Every Tuesday is Family Night, where kids 12 and under eat free!  Bring your pooch while you enjoy a meal on their big, puppy friendly patio.  Killer Shrimp also boasts two incredible happy hours, 7 days a week from 3pm-6pm and 10pm-midnight.  With $5 specialty drinks, delicious food with incredible value, it’s easy to see why Killer Shrimp is becoming a Las Vegas local hotspot!  MV

NITTAYA’S SECRET KITCHEN Corner of N. Rampart/W. Lake Mead 702-360-8885 inding the finest culinary creations in Las Vegas sometimes takes a bit of patience. Looking behind the blinking lights of casinos and huge expanses of shopping districts can be a challenge. But occasionally you find a hidden gem – and that is what Nittaya’s Secret Kitchen is. This unassuming restaurant, nestled away a block north of The Meadows School, is easily one of Las Vegas’ best Thai dining destinations. Walk inside and you’re sure to find a small, yet full dining room, perfect for a cozy date night – not quite as suited for the loud uncle. We tried several items – all of which were top notch. Their Lemongrass soup had a broth to die for. Drunken Noodles with ground chicken, basil and Chinese broccoli was perfectly portioned and delicious. Their Grilled Salmon-Avocado Curry featured a fanned-out Avocado adorning a beautifully displayed piece of Salmon bathed in an incredible sauce. Hands down our favorite was Nittaya’s “Fresh Off The Pineapple Boat” rice, an incredible mix of chicken, pineapple, curry, eggs, cashews, onions and cherry tomatoes, cocooned in the shell of a bisected pineapple. The presentation was phenomenal. The dish? Even better. Needless to say Nittaya’s cover may be blown. Having heard from a friend in Mountain’s Edge, we took the 30 minute drive and it was beyond worth it. If you are in the mood for Thai, Nittaya’s Secret Kitchen has what you’re yearning for. Just don’t tell anybody. We’ll keep this between us. MV

Keep Calm and Trust Your Motherly Intuition

good friend of mine recently went through a terrifying experience. Her eight-year-old son was battling a bad stomach bug. A phone call to her physician encouraged her to give him liquids as tolerated and lots of rest. After a few days, the symptoms persisted, so they went to see the doctor. His symptoms were pretty much the same: low grade fever, vomiting, stomach pain. They sent him home with an anti-nausea pill and the same instructions. My friend was calling and texting me this whole time. She was pacing like a trapped tiger. Something was telling her there was more to the story. She just couldn’t get over the pure lack of energy in her son. She went back and forth on whether to trust the doctor or her instincts. After a few hours, she finally

decided to take him to the ER. Turns out that his appendix had ruptured, but his symptoms were asymptomatic. Now I’m not writing this to scare any parent into over-reacting. As I understand, appendix issues are not extremely common in eight year olds. Most of the time, our kids are fine. Most of the time the doctor is correct. They have all those years of training right? But remember, who knows your kids best? You have all of those years training too. You are an expert on your kids. So, simply put, I’m writing this to encourage everyone to listen to their gut. There is something almost animalistic about our instincts. We have evolved, but this intuition still haunts us. I absolutely believe there is a reason. My example was on the extreme side. The fact

By Katie Bencze

is, following your gut may not be life-saving, but it could be life-changing. Perhaps your instincts flair at a job interview or perhaps when you meet someone. I can’t imagine it’s always coincidence. We evolve with time. People, places, previous experiences…they all offer little clues along the way. They become ingrained and even a part of our conscience. Perhaps it’s even simpler than that, maybe sometimes we “just know.” But whether it’s divine intervention or age-old instinct, we are the ones that have to live with the consequences of what we do and don’t do. If I follow my gut, I feel like I limit my regret. Besides, I’ve never heard anyone say ‘I shouldn’t have followed my instincts.” So when it comes to listening to that nagging feeling, I’m going to pay attention. It may influence my choices or it may not, but at least I can live with that. MV

The Allure of a Powerful Woman

here seems to be a common misperception that men are intimidated by successful women, powerful women, or women who make more money than they do. I’m here to tell you this is not entirely true. Men actually like when a woman makes her own money.Even if you meet an extremely generous man, it will be a relief for both of you to know that you won’t be completely dependent on him.The issue is actually less about you being successful or powerful and more about how you make a man feel. A man wants to feel he’s the most important thing in your world.I personally believe that until a ring is on a woman’s finger, a woman’s career should come first. However, I would never actually tell a man that. There is an art to making your man feel like he is first priority. Dr. Pat Allen has a popular theory that every relationship should have a masculine and a feminine energy. Although it doesn’t matter which partner is the masculine and which partner is the feminine, most women want to be the feminine, and most men want to be the masculine. We are all masculine at work, when we are getting our hustle on. However, when we women come home at night, we want to shift gears, shake off the masculine and shift into our feminine energy. Forgive me if what I’m about to say doesn’t sound feminist because I am a feminist by definition. A feminist advocates that social, political, legal, and economic rights for women ought to be equal to those of men. That being said, I don’t believe we have to take the “feminine” out of feminist. No matter how powerful we are in our careers, I think it is crucial to learn to access our softer sides in our romantic relationships. Something else Dr. Pat Allen reminds us is that a man’s greatest need is have his thoughts respected. It is the feminine’s role to respect, appreciate, and provide the sensuality in the relationship.A man might not be intimidated

by a powerful woman, but he wants to be the powerful one at home. Let him be. In return, his role is to give, protect, and cherish his feminineenergy partner. That brings me to the topic of who pays. The masculine feels good when he gives. So, in the first few months of the relationship, let him pay. Even if you make more money, a masculine man will want to take care of you and might feel emasculated if you offer.Later, once you have established that you are in an exclusive relationship, I do think it is nice for the feminine to help out, especially if she makes more money. A side note: some powerful women naturally exude a masculine energy and would be better off finding a feminine-energy man. These types of men have no problem with successful women or women who have more money than they do. They enjoy the benefits of a woman who gives, protects, and cherishes them. This type of woman enjoys the power and control she has over the relationship.I think this is why many high profile women like Jennifer Lopez and Madonna date much younger men. So shake off any limiting beliefs you might have about being successful. Whether you choose a masculine man who wants you to adore him or a boy toy who adores you, know that your success is actually one of your greatest assets. MV

It’s never a perfect job but we try to keep Caribbean style and craft vendors to give a unique ambiance,” said Apcar. Honoring our Vets, Helping At-Risk Children and so Much More

By Lori Nelson Station Casinos

s we gear up to celebrate our 40th birthday catering to the locals, I think back fondly over my time (a decade plus) I’ve been with Station Casinos because there’s just something very special about it. It starts with being a family owned and operated business since “The Casino,” today Palace Station, opened in 1976. With that family dynamic, came the Fertitta family’s commitment to take care of the community. “MONTH OF HONOR” BENEFITTING VETERANS VILLAGE Last May, we proudly hosted our inaugural “Month of Honor” to raise funds for Veterans Village, an amazing local charity addressing the needs of homeless veterans by providing housing and many other important needed services. Through donating a portion of our proceeds and gaming winnings and with the tremendous support of our team members and guests, we raised nearly $60,000 and donated thousands of cans of food. We are excited to once again partner with Veterans Village this May for “Month of Honor” and invite you to our properties to get involved. GIVING KIDS A “SMART START” 15 years ago we created a partnership with school district called “Smart Start” to work with at-risk elementary schools. From providing financial support, volunteering in the classrooms, offering rewards to incentivize the students, down to making sure all of the kids have their own school supplies; these are just a few of the ways we help. Recently we delivered 300 computers to our partner schools which afforded students the chance to have a computer at home. APPRECIATING OUR TEACHERS In order for our children to succeed, we need great passionate and appreciated teachers. We know there’s no one working harder than the 18,000 teachers from the Clark County School District. For our 2nd year, we want to give our thanks to every teacher with a dinner to one of our Buffets during Teacher Appreciation Week in early May. It’s a small token of our appreciation and admiration for the hardest working people in our community. MV

Local Spotlight: Singer, Songwriter, Performer

Meet Noelle Chiodo

By Jennifer Miller

of being on stage and in the spotlight and couldn’t look back.

atch out music world…Noelle Chiodo is about to conquer. You may have seen her perform around the city at different events and establishments. She started at age 14 singing at Sambalatte Café and then moved to other venues including Marche Bacchus, The View Wine Bar and First Friday. She also volunteers her talents to Opportunity Village. Now, 18-years-old she is ready for a bigger stage with short term goals like performing at Life is Beautiful, Downtown Container Park and Bite of Las Vegas but she has an even bigger vision. “I want a recording contract,” she boldly states. Listening to the conviction and determination in her voice, she’s on her way. She recently received radio play with her original song, “I Would” which she self-produced on Mix 94.1’s new music show AREA941 with the On-Air DJ Angie. A pop singer with a soulful twist, she is fully focused on her music career and has a plan to get what she wants. Currently enrolled at UNLV Honors College with a Business Marketing major and a Music Production minor she has a plan. She wants to grow herself with a business mentality. “I am so thankful to have a mom and dad with a business background. Growing up watching them has really taught me how to have the business perspective and think with a business mindset.” Noelle’s music career started very humbly. Her mother, Vanessa enrolled her in a performance group just for fun. She ended up getting a solo for “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” During the performance she found her purpose in life. At age 8, she fell in love with that moment

Her childhood gig turned into her singing in church where she picked up sight reading and harmonizing and learning theory behind music. She began playing piano at age 12. At age 13 she started songwriting and soon after her grandparents bought an acoustic guitar for Christmas and she taught herself how to play. When she graduated the Faith Conservatory of the Fine Arts with high honors, she opted to stay in Las Vegas despite acceptance to a university in Chicago, DePaul (which included a scholarship of $60,000) and other California schools. She wanted to start off her career with it blooming in her backyard. The place she had the opportunity to see in Vegas-fashion how the starlets do it in the city that never sleeps. Staying true to her adage from “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” ‘there’s no place like home.’ “I am Las Vegas born and raised and I want to start my career here. This is where my heart is. I love Las Vegas and it will always be my home, no matter where I have to go to make my dream a reality.” She was influenced by Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Etta James. For song writing, she looks to Taylor Swift and Jessie J. Her background is even more eclectic as she grew up listening to different types of music like Mariachi, Soul funk and R& B which her mother loved to listen to. Her father who was a drummer in a classic rock band, exposed her to that genre. Noelle’s parents were adamant about her not pursuing music until she was old enough even though she was very talented at a young age. She is grateful her parents let her love for music grow with her into adolescence. “I am glad that I was forced to wait because now I know that I want it and I can go out and get it myself. I want my music to tell a story and be able to reach people and influence or impact their lives.” MV Instagram: noellechiodo snapchat: @noellechiodo

PEEDVEGAS will start its engines this April, when the 1.5-mile Formula One-inspired supercar driving track at Las Vegas’ newest and most thrilling adrenaline attraction opens for business. By summer, the entire $30 million motorsports complex—including a multilevel welcome center, event center with a capacity of up to 1,000 guests, café and much more—will be complete. The 100-acre supercar driving experience broke ground in September 2015. Located on Las Vegas Boulevard, just a 10 minute drive from the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, SPEEDVEGAS can be accessed conveniently at Exit 25 off Interstate 15. Designed for a local, national—and the global audience attracting Las Vegas’ more than 40 million annual visitors— SPEEDVEGAS will be a destination for not only exotic car enthusiasts, but also anyone and everyone seeking an exhilarating, only-in-Vegasstyle experience. An onsite meetings and events facility means SPEEDVEGAS stands poised to accommodate not only leisure visitors, but also local business groups, social occasions, as well as corporate and incentive groups from out of town with ease. SPEEDVEGAS sought expert input from an international panel of travel and tourism experts in the development of its design. Plans incorporated input gleaned from a focus group SPEEDVEGAS hosted composed of leading professionals from the LVCVA, international tour operators from UK, Latin America and Asia, along with meeting and event planners. For example, participants recommended shuttle service from the Las Vegas Strip, an option to be driven in the car instead of driving and flexibility to arrive at the visitors’ leisure instead of committing to a specific time and car. “We listened to our customers and industry colleagues to create the ultimate experience,” explained Aaron Fessler, founder and chief executive officer, SPEEDVEGAS. “It’s critical we stay nimble and accommodate not only the millions of people from around the world who visit Las Vegas, but also locals. We’re committed to being a destination the whole Las Vegas community enjoys.”

SPEEDVEGAS Highlights The Track: The 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) track, located on Las Vegas Boulevard South, just 10 minutes from the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign, encompasses 12 turns, 60 feet in elevation change and a half-mile straight. Designed and built by a team of award-winning track designers, SPEEDVEGAS’ track lets guests drive their dream cars free the way they were meant to be driven—that means no traffic and no speed limits. Experiences: An expansive array of cars priced from $49 per lap to $89 per lap is available, ranging from a Shelby Mustang, to an Audi R8 V-10, to a Ferrari 458 Italia to a Lamborghini Huracan LP610—plus many more exciting makes and models. Guests can reserve their car in advance, or pick their favorite upon arrival at the SPEEDVEGAS welcome center.

Events and Groups: SPEEDVEGAS is tailor-made for corporate groups, bachelor parties and events of all kinds.

Live Chat: Seven days a week, representatives are available on to chat live with visitors and answer all questions regarding the experience, pricing and booking reservations.

Private areas accommodate up to 1,000 event attendees with outdoor option for larger events. A wide selection of catering options is available, from casual fare to five-star dining or the ability to bring in your own. MV

The motorsports complex features 20,000 square feet (1,800 square meters) of meeting and hospitality space, including indoor and outdoor viewing terraces to accommodate day or evening events.

Top 10 Vegas Hikes & Hot Springs

By Joel Jarvis

Liberty Bell Arch at White Rock Canyon. Six-mile gravel trail that leads past an imposing arch and a WWII era mine to the tip of Black Canyon overlooking a 1000-foot-deep Colorado River gorge view.

Turtlehead Peak at Red Rock Canyon. Most difficult hike at Red Rock for a 5 mile round trip. Very strenuous and challenging.  Go left all the way up or you will not make it to the top. Water and sunscreen are required.

Arizona Hot Springs at White Rock Canyon.  Pools reaching 120 degrees just 1000 feet from the Colorado River - 5.6 miles round trip.  Do not put your head under the water at the springs: killer amoeba lurking in springs.

Fortification Hill at Lake Mead. Climb about 1,400 feet for a view of Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and the surrounding Sonoran Desert landscape. It’s like being on the moon!

Slab Rift at Red Rock Canyon. Class 3 scrambling route that goes through a huge crevice to narrow ledge high above basin. Best enjoyed with a group.

Goldstrike Hot Springs / Nevada Hot Springs in Boulder City. Not an easy hike due to the fixed ropes on slippery rocks and massive boulders. It’s about 7 miles roundtrip. Starts easy then gets harder and harder.

Frenchman’s Mountain aka Sunrise Mountain on eastern border of valley. At 4,055 feet with twin peaks and a 2,000 feet gain on your way to the summit. 2.2 miles of steep rock but worth the view. Trekking poles recommended for the decent.

Bailey’s Hot Springs in Beatty Nevada. This is for the no hike types. Drive up!  Spring temps between 100-108 degrees piped in to the RV park.  For the truly adventurous and lazy.  5 Miles north of Beatty on Highway 95, mile marker 65.

Black Mountain in Sloan Canyon in South Henderson. 7.6 miles round trip with 2,100 foot elevation gain at the summit of 5,092. 360-degree view of the valley. Four hours of cardio for a killer view!

Rapids Hot Springs at Arizona Canyon. Quarter mile walk 10. Ringbolt to a 20-foot ladder to the top is the obstacle here, and you can drive up the river to this delight.  Located just 4 miles past Hoover Dam on US 95.

Plus, love is in the air at the Outrigger Waikiki with its biweekly Hawaiian vow renewal ceremony. Conducted by an Hawaiian officiant, the ceremony begins with a traditional Hawaiian welcome chant. Couples are then treated to a graceful hula and serenaded with Hawaiian song before being blessed with a gentle sprinkling of seawater and reciting vows in the Hawaiian language. The ceremony concludes with a performance of the beautiful Hawaiian Wedding Song, accompanied by a hula. A commemorative certificate is presented to each couple at the conclusion of the ceremony to remember the day. Superheroes 4 Sully

risten Mainor founded Superheroes 4 Sully in January 2013 after the sudden passing of her 9-year-old stepson, Sullivan “Sully” Mainor. Looking for a way to cope with the devastating loss of their son, the Mainors took the suggestion of a family friend to collect new superherothemed toys to donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities in Sully’s name. Aside from his family, Sully’s favorite thing in the world was superheroes. Rather than dwelling on the circumstances of his death, Kristen, along with husband Brad and their remaining five children, found a way to keep Sully’s memory alive: by helping other children in our community. One month to the day of Sully’s passing, the first donation was made, and Superheroes 4 Sully was born. Armed with the idea of creating a lasting legacy for her stepson, Kristen became passionate about helping needy or sick children in the local community. Sully, only 9 years old, had very virtuous qualities—way beyond what you’d typically see in a child that age. He would often insist on giving his own money to the hungry and homeless throughout the valley. He was known at his school, Ober Elementary, for being exceptionally kind to his fellow students. Sully felt it was his job to make everyone smile, especially the kids having a tough day or who were struggling to fit in. The essence of Sully and those special qualities are what helped to create and found the mission of Superheroes 4 Sully.

For over three years, Kristen has coordinated donations of new superhero-themed toys clothing, shoes, backpacks, and essentials that go directly into the hands of more than 3,000 children in foster care and protective custody in Las Vegas. “I was shocked to learn that our county doesn’t automatically provide those things for children in crisis. It was through this work I discovered that the basic material needs of kids in ‘the system’ are provided almost exclusively through ‘hand-me-down’ donations…I was heartbroken that these kids, who have already been through so much, and in some cases have lost everything, are then given shabby secondhand clothing and shoes—and that’s only if their sizes are available,” Kristen said. The mission for Superheroes 4 Sully became clear: to spread the word and collect monthly donations of everyday essentials for children. These items are taken to Peggy’s Attic and then put directly into the hands of children that need them the most. The concept is simple but doesn’t stop there. While donations are now being sent to Superheroes 4 Sully from all over the country, Kristen works with local schools to educate and instill a concept of “kids helping kids.”  “I think it’s important to teach our local kids the importance of giving back to the community. It’s what Sully would do…that’s what it means to

be ‘Superheroes 4 Sully.’ I always talk about how proud he would be and how they are sharing their ‘Sully Power’ to help others. They may only be kids, but they are making a huge difference,” Kristen said. Through social media and word of mouth, Superheroes 4 Sully has grown and coordinated donations benefitting other local nonprofits and groups: Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Boys & Girls Club, pediatric burn unit survivors, NICU “graduates,” the MDA, and The Shade Tree shelter. In May 2015, Superheroes 4 Sully was honored by the Department of Family Services and recognized by county commissioners for its work with foster children. In January 2016, Pfizer Corporation invited Kristen to speak at a company conference about the mission of Superheroes 4 Sully. The charity was used as inspiration for a company teambuilding event, resulting in the donation of hundreds of superhero capes for local kids in need.  To be involved or donate: Follow us on Instagram: Superheroes4Sully Twitter: @SH4Sully Money can also be donated through PayPal through All monetary donations are used to purchase brand new superhero-themed clothing, toys, and essentials for local indigent children. Dinosaurs and Roses Charity

f everyone had the energy of Michele MorganDevore, there’s no telling what could be accomplished. But for Michele, it’s all about making a difference in people’s lives, one person at a time. Michele Morgan-Devore is the executive director of Dinosaurs & Roses, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit she founded in 2008, in response to the effects of the Great Recession. “Seeing so many people who were peers of mine who had lost everything,” she said. “And then reaching out further and seeing that people had an idea that, when you think of low income, you think of someone living on the street. But it wasn’t that way.” She expressed how it was families who would never expect that they’d be going through going through a devastating hardship. Devore’s vision was to rescue through recycling other’s belongings. This included bare necessities that that those in need didn’t have. A successful independent business owner in her own right, Michele owns and operates Morgan Specialties which supplies advertising products to promote area businesses and events. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York and her background is in advertising, event planning and manufacturing management, all of which come into play with the nonprofit. There are three Dinosaurs & Roses locations – Meadows Mall, at 4310 E. Tropicana Ave. and at Tivoli Village. “We have something for every budget. Tivoli has a lot of designer and high ends pieces. Meadows is mid-range and the thrift store is where you’ll find the bargain of the century,” she said. And, yes, you can negotiate – that’s half the fun of getting a bargain. She’s

built it to the point that the nonprofit organization has numerous community partners and is always looking to partner with other causes from schools to individuals. It also operates a Learn to Work Program for high schoolers. On weekends, Michele devotes time for her hobbies - gardening, cooking, reading and hiking. She also likes to make creative projects. Her latest one, decorator flower pieces made from ceramic plates, are destined for Dinosaurs and Roses stores where they sell for $25 to $35. She is looking to partner with an established nonprofit organization to further the effort. She said that she’d welcome hearing from vested organizations in Las Vegas to join forces for the betterment of the community. Still, that intent to see help others get back on their feet is never far away. It keeps Michele at the stores, overseeing the effort. “We’ve had occasions where the mother just sits there and cries because she’s tried to get help from so many agencies and nobody would help,” Michele said. “… Their children sleep on a bare floor. They don’t even have a towel to sleep on. Then she comes to us and gets clothes and pots and pans and she’s like, ‘Now I can cook for my children.’ That’s my reward, that’s what I’m doing, knowing I’ve touched a person’s life.” She resides in Summerlin, with her husband, Dr. Phillip Devore, professor and practicing dentist at UNLV. They have three children. Greg is 34, Shawn is 33, and Stephanie is 32. Two are doctors, one is a lawyer. They also have three four-legged children also known as their rescue dogs – Shana, Andy and Lovie. For a complete listing of partners, see the website, MV

Olive Crest’s Project Independence: Making a Big Impact for Nevada’s Forgotten Teens

hild abuse. Neglect. Kids in at-risk family environments. These are never easy realities to face in our community. Moreover, the fate of young adults aging out of foster care is a reality that in most cases isn’t even on the social services radar. The fact is, for teens turning 18, access to ongoing support services comes to a complete halt. These “adults” often exit the system without a support network or the basic life-skills that can help them find a job, open a checking account, shop for groceries, or find an apartment. And, on their own, where do they go? Tragically, many of these teenagers will experience homelessness or drift from couch to couch in unsafe environments. The latest statistics reveal that approximately 20,000 young adults “age out” of the foster care system annually. In Clark County, 36% of former foster youth reported times when they did not have a place to live after turning 18, 50% left foster care without a high school degree, and 41% reported spending at least one night in jail. Nationally, 51% are unemployed and less

than 2% attend college or obtain a Bachelor’s (or higher) degree. And, that’s where Olive Crest comes in. For nearly 20 years, Olive Crest in Southern Nevada has been pursuing the vision of “Strong Families, Safe Kids” with programs and services designed to prevent child abuse, provide strong host or foster families for at-risk children, quality adoption services, as well as specialized counseling and life-skills training and support. As for teens aging out of the foster care system in Southern Nevada who haven’t been adopted or aren’t supported by a surrogate family system, Olive Crest is bridging that gap with a program called Project Independence. The program provides ongoing mentorship, counseling and life-skills training for former foster kids until age 24. Currently, 90 young adults receive services through the program. With the help of a major grant from Bank of America and other private and public sources, safe and secure housing developments will now be available to accommodate up to 12 residents. Apartment units vary in size

and accommodations, but include standard apartment amenities including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living areas and secured parking and entry to the building. The second development is due to be complete sometime in 2016. Project Independence housing residents will also have easy access to transportation, as well as educational and employment opportunities. Olive Crest’s vision is to bring wholeness to families, safety to children and empowerment to young adults who have fallen through the cracks of well-intentioned, but faulty or under-resourced social services programs. And, while progress is certainly being made to this end, there remains a tremendous need in the Las Vegas and Southern Nevada communities. More information on Project Independence and other Olive Crest services can be found at or by calling 702-685-3495. Financial donations can also be made to support these life-transforming programs by going to or by mailing a taxdeductible check to 4285 North Rancho Dr. #160, Las Vegas, NV 89130. MV

The transformation and rebuilding of the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization began in early 2015 and philanthropic powerhouse and former Miss National Fitness Champion, Jodi Hale Fonfa, has been improving the foundation of the previously tarnished program.

Pageants are held in various locations across the state, targeting young women who want to further their personal and professional dreams by participating in these pageants to showcase their intellect, talent and opinions.

ith style, service and scholarship, the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization unveils yet another year of opportunities and success for young women in Nevada.

Hale Fonfa was recruited from the national board of the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen pageant. After gaining her title of Miss National Fitness, Hale Fonfa went on to train Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning actress, Sharon Stone. She has also judged numerous national and international competitions, is a board member to the world-renowned Debbie Allen Dance Academy, and serves on various boards and provides donations to other charities in her community. After stepping into her role as chief executive officer and chairman, Hale Fonfa assembled a collection of her well-connected friends and created a no-nonsense executive board. Audra Baldwin, chief-operating officer/president, was recruited by Hale Fonfa to play a key role in the development of opportunities for more sponsors and donors. Together they raised a little more than $300,000 and are now recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, securing the future of the program for years to come. Both the Miss Nevada and the Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen pageants fall under the grand umbrella of the Miss America Organization – the world’s largest scholarship provider to nearly 12,000 young women annually. Each year, the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization awards thousand of dollars in cash and scholarship assistance to the women who compete in the state pageant. In 2015, Hale Fonfa and her team supplied $60,000 in scholarship funds to state contestants, spoiling winners with scholarship prizes to further their education. Along with scholarship funds, winners take on a title that grants them

The 2016 Miss Nevada and Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen pageants will be held on May 5th and 6th at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has kindly donated a full-ride scholarship to the organization valued at $24,000. The next Miss Nevada will have the opportunity to choose between a $10,000 scholarship and a full-ride opportunity to UNLV. Hale Fonfa even created a new scholarship award in honor of her mother called the Eileen Hale Empowerment Award. Miss Nevada contestants are challenged to write an essay describing what it means to positively empower women. A separate judge’s panel reviews the essays and the selected winners receive a $1,000 scholarship. Looking beyond the dresses, crowns and sashes, the Miss Nevada Scholarship Organization is empowering the next generation of women by providing them with a forum where they can shine. Hale Fonfa understands the importance of this organization and will continue to push it forward with hopes of bringing the first-ever title of Miss America home to Nevada.

“Who Knew” with Steph MacKenzie 1.

First thing I do in the morning is…. I roll over to push snooze on my alarm at 3:45am…I am not a morning person.

One thing I like to after work is… Go check on everyone at LOTUS and see what’s new and then go workout

One of my favorite Las Vegas restaurants is…. Greens and Proteins or STK (depends on my trainer’s meal plan for me lol)

One of my favorite Las Vegas shows is… Le Reve. I think it showcases the true beauty of the different sizes of women and the art of water.

I wish I knew how to…. Make everyone happy all the time!

A person who inspires me the most is… People inspire me every day. We all have a story and if we listen to each other we can learn and grow... It’s pretty rad!

When I leave Las Vegas I like to go to… Mexico… I love Cancun!!! Or Raider Games during NFL season.

I wish I could quit… QUIT? Speeding. I love to drive fast all the time.

On my day off I like to…. Day off? When I take a day off, I enjoy finding new things to do with my kids and cooking for friends with wine.

10. One thing I wish I were better at… I wish I was better at keeping my kids’ fish alive. 11. One thing I can’t live without is… The gym and my phone… For tunes, man. 12. My one strange habit is… I eat my hair and stick it in my ear… WEIRD I know, but I have done it my whole life.
