MY BEAUTY & HEALTH

A Classic Shave

By Erika Kimble Dermatology NP

I

n celebration of our Top 100 Men of Las Vegas, it seems only fitting to focus on the masculine half of our community, ensuring they look just as fabulous as our ladies. Whether of the male or female persuasion, a person’s face is their calling card to the world. Thus, a well-groomed man, with a smooth, bump-free-shave, will leave a lasting impression of class and refinement with those he meets. Here are the top five shaving pointers to keep your face feeling as smooth as silk!

1.

Tools of the Trade: There are a variety of blade choices to do the job but to minimize razor burn, bumps and stubborn stubble, it’s best to know the dynamics of your equipment. The fad of pentupled blades may sound great, until you realize it cuts every follicle and parcel of skin five times in its track, inducing irritation. If buying disposable razors, stick with a lower blade count and remember to throw them away at least weekly. Wet idle razors with skin-filled blades are a breeding ground for bacteria. A better option would be old school safety-razors, whose blade replacements are less expensive than disposables, cause less irritation and provide a close shave. Find options online at places like www.classicshaving.com

2.

Beard Prep: Hydrating the skin and hair helps the blade not to snag, along with conditioning the skin to protect from severe irritation. A pre-shave oil, like Sandalwood Pre-Shave from the Art of Shaving Store (www. theartofshaving.com) rates high for its softening affect. Apply such to beard area and let soak in for at least one minute before proceeding with the actual shave.

3.

Shaving Technique: With a wet shave, using a quality made brush, like badger hair, will help to loosen ingrowns while sloughing off dead skin. Pair the brush with a mild hydrating shave gel like Aveeno Sensitive Skin Gel OTC or Jack Black Beard Lube (www.getjackblack.com). Although shaving against the grain may provide a closer cut, it will also literally cut your skin. Instead, shave with light pressure with the grain.

4.

Bump Banishing: Even with the best prep, some people are more prone to razor bumps. However, items like Tend Skin (www.tendskin.com) help to sooth that fiery feeling and banish bumps. If extra calming is needed, apply OTC cortisone twice a day for a day or two. However, when market products don’t work, see your dermatology provider who may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics, steroids, or retinoids to better treat the condition called Pseudofolliculitis Barbae.

5.

Post Shave Care: Shaving can be an injurious process, so pamper your skin post shave with a sensitive care moisturizer. Coconut oil, Cerave, or Cetaphil cream presents a great overnight skin emollient. However, regular chemical exfoliation, like glycolic acid (610%) in between shaves, can clear dead skin debris and open pores. First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads, which combine lactic and glycolic acid are a good option for a gentle, yet effective approach.

A quality shave can help you face the world radiating confidence and classiness. Take heed in practicing the best way to perform this facial art, on the canvas of your skin. XCYCLE: Local Leader of the Indoor Cycling Craze

By: Jen Barnet

A

re you wondering what the indoor cycling craze is all about? Come to XCYCLE in Boca Park, and let us show you! At XCYCLE, we believe in creating a fun cardio experience for our riders. Our program simulates a cardio party, not just some overdone, mundane exercise regime. Our group of awesome instructors add special moves to keep it interesting, while teaching to the beat of all types of music. Each instructor takes the time to put together their own 45-minute playlist each and every day, ultimately creating the perfect environment that keeps our riders motivated, interested and moving! If you are not already familiar with the format of indoor cycling, the classes are conducted in a group format, at a high intensity level, with a focus on strength, endurance and high energy. Indoor cycling also offers one of the best cardiovascular workouts you can find! With proper training and instruction, indoor cycling classes can be the most challenging, most rewarding and most enjoyable workout ever! Here are just some of the benefits of indoor cycling: A Low Impact Exercise Contrary to the misnomer that indoor cycling is hard on knees and other joints, indoor cycling is actually a low-impact exercise that can also be utilized as a very beneficial physical therapy tool. When done correctly, cycling boasts less impact than running! According to Dr. Michael Crovetti, Jr., of Crovetti Orthopaedics: “Patients recovering from a hip or knee injury, or after a surgery, benefit from a low impact exercise that promotes first and foremost increasing range of motion followed by the ability to build strength and endurance. XCYCLE can make recovery fun!”

12

Reduces Stress, Boasts Immune System The adrenaline rush that indoor cycling provides is absolutely comparable to a “runner’s high” that is achieved through a release of endorphins. Once these endorphins are released, you will experience the sensation of exhilaration, experience the benefit of an enhanced immune system, and reduced levels of stress! Creates Endurance in Muscles While you are pedaling against resistance on an indoor cycle, you are actually creating levels of endurance in the glutes, calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps. You are also simultaneously increasing the overall strength in adjoining ligaments, tendons, and bones, which will ultimately assist you with conducting certain daily activities more easily. Great Cardiovascular Exercise Cardiovascular exercise, done on a continual basis, can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease. An indoor cycling program will keep your heart rate within a dynamic range for about 45 minutes, and ACSM recommends that this type of exercise should be performed approximately five days per week at moderate intensity, or three days per week at vigorous intensity, to achieve the best results.

Aids in Weight Loss Since cycling increases your heart rate, you will ultimately burn calories – contributing to weight loss! Combine your cycling exercise with a proper diet, and watch how quickly you can achieve your weight loss goals. How many calories you burn depends on the exertion level of your exercise and the duration of that exercise, so keep that in mind when planning your workout routines. At XCYCLE, we believe that good health is one of the true paths to happiness – and we will help you not only create that path, we will get you on the path, and keep you there! MV

the nutrition it needs first. That is why we can eat bags and bags of oreos and get sick before feeling full, yet half of a prime rib will have us feeling like we are going to burst. That is because the protein and fats give us the nutrition our body needs, which in turn signals our brain that we have had enough. This will help us to consume less carbohydrates that what most of us end up eating too much of and then end up feeling tired and foggy after. Walk instead of drive your kids to school. If you live too far away, drive and park approximately a mile away and walk from your car to the school. This won’t even feel like exercise and you will have to walk back from school getting in a two mile walk and your cardio is done for the day. The definition of “insanity” is doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting different results. Switch up your workouts if you want to start seeing and feeling a difference. Try a yoga or Pilates class once a week. Hit the gym twice a week and go hiking on the weekends. Don’t let summer come to an end and your motivation to stay healthy end with it! Halloween Tips for the Savvy

Tammy Kincaid

D

on’t let yourself be tricked this Halloween while in pursuit of your favorite treat! Even as adults we still love dressing up and experimenting with makeup. But before you race to the Halloween store or use those many expired products we all still have in our drawers to complete your ghoulish outfit this year, you might want to keep a few tips in mind. PROTECT YOUR SKIN Never use a product for the first time without testing it on your hand or wrist. If no reaction occurs it probably will be okay to use. However, always put a layer of heavy moisturizer on your face before applying a Halloween makeup kit and never apply glitter close to your eyes. HAIR DAMAGE Take the safer route and wear a wig or extensions to achieve your look especially if your hair is fine, dry or already damaged. Using a hair dye that you spray on your hair can sometimes be difficult to remove later and may take a few shampoos. REMOVING MAKEUP If you are removing latex effects remove by gently peeling and use soap and water to remove any remaining pieces. Heavy makeup should be removed with cold cream which many of the makeup kits use in small amounts already unless they are oil based then you should use baby oil. Glitter should wash off easily, however scotch tape can be used for any stubborn spots. Most of all remember to have fun and with a little preplanning take care of your beauty needs as well. What’s New in Dentistry?

T

he latest innovation in dentistry is fluorescence cavity detection. Remember the old days when the dentist would have to use the pick to check for cavities? This new technology greatly minimizes the picking around, which gives many of us the heebie geebies! The science behind the technology is fascinating. A special light looks for a protein by-product that cavity bacteria excretes... “Like a GPS system maps roads, our new technology maps areas of decay... It can also help the dental team and patients know how large and deep the cavity is likely to be.” says Las Vegas Holistic Dentist,

Dr. Jim Wright. This amazing tool helps to give patients and dentists, a heads up for something that may need immediate treatment or may bear watching, for future treatment. Dr. Wright says, «I was an early adapter of this technology and have been using this advanced instrument for awhile... Although it takes a lot more time to diagnose, it is much more thorough and helps me find decay, which I or other exceptional dentists using traditional diagnosing methods would have difficulty catching. This technology is amazing and can make a great improvement in the early diagnosis of cavity decay.” A special type of photo is taken of each tooth and if there is cavity decay, a number is assigned. Dr. Wright’s experience has convinced him that the

diagnostic numbers are quite accurate. He believes knowledge is power and strives to have his staff educate and empower his patients, who want to better understand their dental health. Using this light technology really makes sense, as it gives patients a visible tangible look at the GPS map of their teeth. A very early cavity can be caught and restored before more extensive treatment has to be performed. It is more conservative and saves drilling out a larger area later, minimizing the need for procedures such as root canals, crowns, extractions and implants. The bottom line... It will save patients pain and money. MV

Cupcake Girls on a Mission By Jennifer Miller-Gonzales

J

oy Hoover and her husband, Phil, came to Las Vegas for the very first time on vacation seven years ago, with the intention to check out the Las Vegas scene. They didn’t know this trip would change the course of their lives forever. They were aware of the “Sin City” reputation, including the chaos and craziness, and found their Midwest upbringing was quite a contrast to the Las Vegas lifestyle. Fate, rather than fun, led them to meet different groups who were working to support adult entertainers, and others who were helping to fight the issue of sex trafficking. The couple started their own research about people in the industry and the lack of resources, specifically people in Las Vegas, as Nevada is the #1 state for sex trafficking. They became determined to make a difference. “My husband and I have always cared about marginalized communities. We have a strong belief that everyone has a story and deserves rights, resources, and support. We found that there are many people in this industry not receiving that” Joy said. Two months after their vacation, they sold most of their belongings and headed back to Las Vegas - this time with a mission. Joy took a position applying makeup for the participants of the Adult Entertainment Expo and AVN Awards, the largest adult entertainment convention and award show in the world. It was here that Joy was inspired by the women she met.

18

She said, “Through conversations, I found we had a lot in common. We were all women with dreams, goals, and aspirations. I believe we all deserve to be equally cared for and supported.” Partnering with a few local organizations, Joy forged connections within the industry, and began visiting strip clubs and local brothels. They brought cupcakes and smiles, but stayed to hear stories and get to know the workers. The cupcakes are an icebreaker for the volunteers to come into establishments and start conversations; they evolved into a calling card. The thought behind gifting the cupcakes is, “We respect you as a human being. Here’s a cupcake, and if you ever need anything else, let us know!” Eventually, the workers began referencing the group as “The Cupcake Girls,” and it was adopted as the organization’s formal name. During these initial visits, they didn’t have any resources to offer tangible support. Some nights she would hear stories of domestic violence, sex trafficking, legal, medical or dental needs, and more, but all they could offer were cupcakes and kindness. Joy realized they needed help from the community if they were to succeed. “The reality is that many people partake in the glamorization of the industry, but don’t realize there are real people behind it that struggle just like us, and because of

the stigma, sometimes even more. We started reaching out to trauma therapists, lawyers, financial advisors, and others who could provide real support” she said. In February 2011, The Cupcake Girls was officially launched, with direct outreach to the people working in Las Vegas strip clubs, legal brothels, and adult entertainment events. The only “agenda” was, and still is, to be a resource and support organization that empowers people in their pursuits. Later that year, a second branch opened in Portland, OR. The organization is currently working on creating a resource center where all their community partners and case managers can gather to provide a one-stopshop for holistic health and care, and where clients can find career opportunities if they desire to transition out of the industry. This resource center, which has been a dream since its inception, is on the verge of becoming a reality. MV

We have all heard at one time or another, “you only get one life, live your best, or live it fully.” What does that really mean to you specifically? The Opioid Epidemic in Las Vegas: Is the End Finally in Sight?

By John Seeland Las Vegas Recovery Center

can now obtain a prescription from a physician. Naloxone has been hailed as a “miracle drug” because of its ability to immediately reverse the effects of a drug overdose. One of my colleagues, Dr. Mel Pohl, Chief Medical Officer for Las Vegas Recovery Center, applauds this legislation, but thinks it could even be taken a step further. “While making naloxone more widely available is an important first step,” he stated, “what would be even better is if the prescription requirement is removed. Everyone should have easy access to naloxone because not only does it save lives, but it’s safe and holds no risk for abuse.” The Medical Community Offers a New Way to View Pain and Pain Management Up until recently, the Medicare payments that hospitals received were tied to the results of patient pain management questionnaires. Hospitals were scored based on surveys that assessed a patient’s level of pain and how well he or she thought the hospital had been able to manage it.

I

n August 2016, the US Surgeon General wrote a letter to every doctor in America pleading with them to take action against what he called an “urgent health crisis”. The opioid epidemic has taken center stage in American communities, creeping into the medicine cabinets of everyone from soccer moms to senior citizens. Drug overdoses now kill more US citizens than car accidents, and at least half of those deaths are the result of opioid painkillers, many of which were doctor-prescribed. The epidemic has reached such epic proportions that even the US Surgeon General, the nation’s top doctor, is concerned, telling the American medical community simply: “I need your help…” Working at Las Vegas Recovery Center, I see the effects of the opioid abuse epidemic every day. It is—and has been —front and center in my life. But even if I had no personal experience with addiction, it’s likely I would know someone who

20

has. Many of us do. According to a recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 44 percent of Americans know someone who has been addicted to a prescription pain medication. Here in Nevada, that number may be higher, as our drug-related fatality rate is twice the national average (we’re ranked third-worst in the country). The news isn’t all negative, however. The passing of recent legislation at the state and federal level, including the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), suggests that the tides may finally be turning. New Legislation Makes It Easier to Stop Fatal Overdoses Before They Happen In 2015, a piece of legislation was passed in Nevada that made the anti-overdose drug naloxone more widely available to the general public. Opiate users and their family members

Several months ago, however, members of the medical community in Las Vegas and across the US, signed a petition requesting that the pain management questions be removed from the hospital quality surveys. Their petition was a success and in July 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) agreed to propose the removal of the survey pain management questions from their hospital payment scoring calculation. My colleague Dr. Mel Pohl was one of the physicians who signed the petition. “This was an excellent example of the medical community coming together to affect real change,” he said. “We spoke up and our voices were heard.” Dr. Pohl and I hope the Las Vegas community will join us in helping to educate people about painkiller-free alternatives. As Dr. Pohl has pointed out: “There are safer and healthier ways other than opioids to cope with and recover from pain. We have the power to turn the tide.” MV

MY HEALING & HAPPINESS

7 Lost nSouls Stole

D

uring my eight years as a brainwave technologist, I have worked with people plagued by all sorts of addictions (gambling, shopping, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, etc.) Therefore, it’s not surprising that I know seven people who have struggled with an opioid addiction. However, this number does not include any of my clients. The seven I am speaking of are individuals I know personally. Two are women and five are men. Three of them are immediate family members of my very best friends. All seven were such beautiful, vibrant and loving souls before opioids entered their life.

Mike’s Story At 27, Mike had spinal surgery to have two tumors removed. He was prescribed oxycodone and morphine for the pain. At some point the addiction sunk its teeth into him. When the doctor stopped prescribing, he went to the “black market” where opioids can sell for $20-40 for one pill. And when the addiction kicks in, you need a whole lot more. Meaning, one pill does nothing, so the costs are beyond what most can afford. After someone told him heroin would take away all his pain and was cheaper at about $10 a dose, he tried it and was hooked.

The term opioid combines opium and oid, meaning opiate-like. Opiates, like morphine, are drugs derived from opium. Opioids are semisynthetic and synthetic substances that produce morphine-like effects and are most often used medically to relieve pain, such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, and fentanyl. These narcotics are known by a myriad of brand names including Vicodin, Percocet, Demerol, Oxcontin, Dilaidid, Lortab and the list goes on. Heroin is an opioid that is synthesized from morphine.

He went to rehab four times of his own volition. He was clean for just more than 90 days when he was found slumped over his bed by his roommate. The coroner ruled a fentanyl overdose as the cause of death. He was just 32 years old.

Of “my” seven, three are still active, two are in recovery and two are deceased. I would like to share some details of one, whom I will call Mike for the sake of privacy, as his story is all too common.

22

Mike was but one. In 2014, almost 19,000 people died from opioid overdose in the United States. Joan Rivers, Whitney Houston, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Howard Hughs, Ana Nicole Smith, Elvis, Michael Jackson and Prince are just a few notables who’ve had opioid related deaths.

By Angi Covington

What’s being done? In May, CBS did a story they called “America’s Opioid Epidemic” which covered West Virginia’s lawsuit against McKesson, one of the country’s leading pharmaceutical distributors. The suit alleges that “while West Virginia was drowning in painkillers, McKesson continued to incentivize sales… with bonuses for the sale of oxycodone and hydrocodone.” In June of this year the New York Times ran an article about ERs scattered across the country that are employing various alternative and/ or holistic solutions for pain, including trigger point injections, laughing gas, music therapy and energy work. The article states that pain is the chief reason nearly 75 percent of patients seek emergency treatment. Such pain can be quickly subdued with opioids. Stolen The pharmaceutical industry has taken one of the most, if not the most, addictive substances known to man, synthesized or partially synthesized it, then patented and trade named a multitude of these drugs and watched profits sore. The cost? Well, if you’ve known someone gripped by these drugs and seen their effects first hand, you will likely agree that from a spiritual perspective, even if the addict lives, opioids are stealing souls. MY HEALING & HAPPINESS

By April Mcintosh

T

The Girl Next Door

he road to recovery from a drug addiction is a long, arduous and narrow path, so one has to start at the beginning to understand. My name is April McIntosh and I was the girl next door. The first time I remember getting high I was 12 years old in my parent’s garage. It was a late night and the drug of choice or possibly because it was the only one available, was spray paint. I had absolutely no clue how exactly to achieve this elusive high that I heard so much about from the other kids and of course the D.A.R.E. program, but I was willing to give it a shot. It was followed up with a whole pint of blackberry schnapps from my parent’s liquor cabinet. I mean hey, that was the only thing that wouldn’t be missed, right? The next morning my father asked me “April, what the hell were you doing in the garage last night with your friend?” My response, “A science project dad.”

My step-mother drove the neighborhoods looking for me, for days. At the time I thought it was funny because I was right under her nose. Now, myself a parent, I have to say, “I am sorry mom.” I proceeded to emancipate myself from my father. Isn’t that what every 16 year old wants? At one point and time after my parents had found me I lied to my father and told him I hated him, so that they would let me go. There I was, 16 years old and on my own in a dark world that I knew nothing about.

That was the beginning of many years of drug and alcohol abuse. The following year in 7th grade was spent in a haze of ditching school while still maintaining my grades so that I could get into a magnet high school. As the youngest of four daughters I knew that without a scholarship, I wouldn’t be attending college. I managed to secure a spot in The Academy of Finance and I was stoked. However, I can’t recall one day of the entire 8th grade, but the pot was amazing and the vodka was plentiful.

and that was only because I needed someone to pick me up from Juvenile Hall. I had defended my pregnant sister, and try as she might, she was only three years older than me, so they weren’t believing her story about her being my mom. My addiction was so bad at this time that every time he hit me, I thought that I deserved it and that it was my fault. I caught two petty larcenies within 30 days for stealing to get drugs. Eventually he went to jail for hitting me again and then I met my second “rusty knight in aluminum foil.” This second man in my life led me to meeting my saving grace. I met a family that owned a few local businesses in Las Vegas and they gave me an opportunity to get my life back on track. I had quit the hard drugs but I was still drinking.

Then, on my journey, I met a man whom I will refer to as a “rusted knight in aluminum foil.” He was 20 years older than me and promised to take great care of me. Within six months of dating I could find drugs with my eyes closed and within four years I had four very angry uncles that wanted nothing more than to pull me out of the situation that I was in. However, addiction doesn’t work that way. I had seen my father once in this time frame

Once you are addicted, you learn how to lie and lying becomes your new personality.

Freshman year was an absolute blast. I actually remained sober, deep into my studies and managed to pass all of my honor classes. Fast forward to November of my sophomore year, I was given a beautiful car for my birthday from my wonderful loving parents. My step-mother picked it out and I was in love. I reconnected with my best friend from elementary school and I was so happy. Her parents had just divorced and her mom had a new apartment and a new man, and a new habit…drugs. Here I was a drug abuser. I am pretty sure I had tried hard drugs once or twice in middle school but never to the point of my pot and alcohol use. I do remember one night I was so drunk and high that there was no possible way that I could drive. My friend’s mom says, “Here, snort this line.” That was the beginning of the spiral.

Shortly after this incident was the beginning of visible bad habits. I was constantly late for school, I couldn’t keep up on my homework, and partying took priority. At one point, I sat my parents down and told them I had a drug problem. Now to be fair, it is not ok to judge them because after revealing that much of the truth, I completely lied about everything the rest of the way. Once you are addicted, you learn how to lie and lying becomes your new personality. My parent’s first response was, “Where did you get the drugs?” Of course I didn’t want to get my friend’s mom in trouble and truth be told my brother-in-law was in the LVMPD Academy at the time. I lied and said it was from some notorious drug dealers at school and the first thing they did was withdrew me from the academy and put me in a school closer to home. Unfortunately, that just put me closer to my friend’s mom, whom I happened to have hooked up with my new drug dealer. They told me to move all of my furniture out of my parents’ house and move in with them. So I did.

I relapsed in 2006 and met the third man in my life who attempted to “rescue” me. With him I was able to pick up three shiny new felonies between here and Arizona. At one point, the Public Defender in the Superior Court of Arizona told my uncle that 10 years would be the best plea bargain that I would get. My uncle, who has been my biggest supporter and influence, didn’t accept that. He hired an amazing attorney who by the grace of the big man upstairs got me probation. I was released on my own recognizance, came back to Vegas and picked up a whole new case. I was sentenced to probation in Las Vegas and probation in Arizona. I came home and started the court mandated drug program and I was doing great! I was working full-time with the same family as before, as well as going to college full-time and drug court. I was dating a guy by the name of Michael that was pretty amazing but he couldn’t get his act together so I moved out. Shortly after that, I found out I was pregnant! I was ecstatic. I knew the baby would be a girl, and that she would be amazing. I welcomed her into this world on July 14, 2010. She was 19” long and weighed 8lbs 11.5oz. I had a C-section and they prescribed Percocet for the pain. I had been completely sober for more than a year but with one pill…boom! The first pill I took was absolutely euphoric. That started a small avalanche and a whole new addiction. I started buying pain pills on the streets as well as going to my pain management doctor. I found that if I mixed my Soma and Percocet together that I would get a high that I had never experienced before, and

23

MY HEALING & HAPPINESS that the high was a guarantee every time I took those pills. The problem was that once the feeling wore off that I would have to then take another dose. This went on for almost a year. Then disaster struck and pushed me back into sobriety. In 2011, at the age of 40, my boss and mentor had a major stroke and died. He left behind a devastated wife and torn children. To this day I can honestly say that I have never felt a loss like this. I’ve never hit my knees as hard as I did when this happened. He died exactly one month after becoming the godfather to my daughter. His death resonated through the Las Vegas Valley and affected so many lives that it was devastating. I watched his wife, one of my great friends; go through the emotions of burying her husband. I saw dreams disappear before my very eyes, my own and many others. I knew that I had to find a way to get my life back on track and to make Bella’s father a space to play a key role in her life. He was struggling but I attempted to give him goals to help motivate him. One goal I attempted to motivate him towards was to get a place of his own so that he may see his daughter by himself and without supervision. At one point I asked him if he was intravenously using drugs and he looked at me like I was crazy. He even succeeded in buying a condo. On October 13, 2011 Michael called

24

saying that he just wasn’t feeling well and that he would see Bella and me the next day. But the next day, I received a phone call from his father telling me the Metro Police had called to inform him that Michael was in the morgue. I went through the motions of identifying his remains and having him cremated. I was still on probation and needed permission to travel. They wanted proof of the deceased so I marched into Parole and Probation with Michael’s remains and plopped them down on the counter. There was the proof, now please let me take him home to Boston. He died from a drug overdose on his father’s birthday. I couldn’t help but think; what if I would have gone and checked on him that night? Would he still be here? I stayed sober for a while, and then I met a guy who liked to drink socially. He loved my daughter more than life itself, probably more than he loved me. We were engaged to be married and got a cute little house together. I started drinking casually, then heavily. He told me it was too much, so I went to the doctor and got a prescription for opiates. But then he started taking them also. One weekend I asked him if we could party just for one weekend and he agreed. This is where the hashtag #notevenonce comes in. When you are an addict of any kind, one use can mean death. However for me, this time it

meant prison. I broke up with him because he wanted what was best for me and I didn’t want to listen. Instead, I dragged him down into my personal hell without a backward glance. I ended up in jail and my daughter ended up with my sister for 40 days. When I got out I went right back to getting high but I knew I was going away in a few short months. I was homeless and in no shape to drag my daughter around with me. I had burnt all my bridges and set fires to all my fields. My loving uncle helped me once again, and I decided to sign over guardianship of Bella so she could have a stable environment while I went and got my crap together. You can judge me if you like, because I’ll tell you that nobody’s opinion of me can ever come close to my opinion of myself. On January 5, 2015 my sister took me to my sentencing and I was remanded into custody for 1-3 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections. I’m not going to go all “Orange is the New Black” on you, because, well I’ve never seen the show. However, I will tell you that it is not an experience I would wish to repeat. I happened to be 6 weeks pregnant at the time of sentencing, and on Friday the 13th of February I miscarried. To say that the prison system healthcare is a joke, well that would be an understatement. Fast

forward to July 14th, that was the first birthday I ever missed of Bella’s. I was super depressed so I decided to take another inmate’s medication so that I could sleep away the day and the depression. This brings us to my sobriety date, July 15th, 2015. They tell you that as soon as you get out of prison to either hit an AA meeting or find some type of recovery solution. On September 2nd when I was released, the first thing I did was print out a list of places and that Sunday I went and sat my butt down and opened my ears. August 31st, is known around the world as International Overdose Awareness Day. It is a day that has become dear to my heart because through my addiction I have lost contact with many, both good friends and family. These days everyone knows somebody who has died of an overdose. You probably have too and may not even realize it. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, in 2014 there were 47,055 lethal drug overdoses, making drug overdoses the leading cause of accidental deaths. That surpasses the number of car fatalities. “In 2012, there were 259 million prescriptions written for Opioids, which is enough to give each American their own bottle of pills,” that number is absolutely astounding. This is not including drug overdoses that lead to other causes of death, like heart attack, etc. In the 2014 Senate Caucasus on International Narcotics Control, it was stated that 84% of the

world’s consumption of OxyContin and 94% of Hydrocodone is by Americans. Hydrocodone is the number one prescribed medicine in America. Not to mention 4 out of 5 heroin users started out on prescription pain medicines. In 2014 there were 467,000 adolescents currently using pain relievers for nonmedicinal purposes, with roughly less than half at 168,000 already addicted. Of the 21.5 million Americans 12 years of age and older had a substance use disorder, 1.9 million were related to prescription pain relievers while 586,000 were involving heroin. This year, I have lost a niece to a heroin overdose as well as two friends. The numbers above are only reflecting opiate abuse. There is no discernable change in brain activity in that of a heroin user compared to that of a prescription opiate user. They are the same. Today, everything has changed and I am living a clean a life of love and happiness. During my recovery, I had heard about a culinary program, but at that time they told me that I didn’t have enough time to get involved with the program. Every answer to every question was you don’t have enough time. However, I had a new outlook and one of the first places I went to was The Urban League. At the time they were running the RISE program and that just so happened to have a culinary class through The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas! I was so excited. I signed up on the spot and started class in October. I graduated in January of this year.

I found a low paying job at a local burger joint. The focus was casual fine dining. It gave me an amazing opportunity to learn how to cook higher end dishes like Wagyu, and Foie Grais. Being the ambitious person that I currently am, I continued to look for a better paying job. I found one at a local bar and was interviewed for a management position. Even though I didn’t get that particular promotion, it awakened an urge inside of me for more. I wanted to lead again, I wanted to teach again, and I wanted to train again. I still applied for better jobs sporadically to avoid getting stagnant in my position and fall through the cracks. My daughter just currently celebrated her 6th birthday, the day after that I celebrated my year of sobriety. Ten days after that, I got a call from a local casino that was reopening and they invited me for an interview. I was so happy they chose me of all people! I got the job, with the possibility of moving to lead at a different location. This was a dream come true for me because I am a rehabilitated member of society and I am sober today because I “want” to be, not because I “have” to be. My daughter is extremely happy to have her mom back and in her life. I have learned to accept and love everything about me. I am a survivor. I am an addict. I am a recovering alcoholic. But I am also a mother and a friend. I am the girl next door. MV

The Self-Made Journey into the Medical Cannabis Industry: The Joe Vargas Story

By Simmone Park

CL UD N9NE

I

f you are from or frequent the Las Vegas area, chances are you have heard the name “Joe Vargas” and with good reason. For ten years, the Las Vegas native made quite the name for himself in the entertainment, nightlife, and media industries in Sin City. Today we explore the real story of how Joe Vargas came to be. Prior to a decade in the media running one of the most popular nightlife blogs in the country, TM Vargas served in the United States Navy. He completed eight years of active duty service (five | @CloudN9neSyrup in San Diego as an Operations Specialist Second Class and three in Las Vegas at Nellis Air Force Base as a Training Officer for the Naval Reserve) and upon completion, Vargas turned down a four year contract to Japan to be closer to his two children. At that point, Vargas didn’t know what to do next and took a huge risk by entering industries completely foreign to him. Success didn’t come overnight either. Although currently living his dream life, Vargas recalls vividly the days of couch surfing/struggling to pay weekly rentals, not knowing where his next meal would come from, and riding the bus. Now Vargas finds himself living in a dream lakefront home, new cars for himself and his daughter, and taking frequent vacations with his kids amongst other things.

sip and relax on the clouds

TM

great success from a business standpoint, Vargas felt unfulfilled. Helping others came naturally to Vargas and he no longer felt he was doing enough. It was almost by chance that Vargas was introduced to the medical cannabis industry by an old party bus partner and Vargas’ life was changed forever. Vargas extensively researched the cannabis industry and once he realized the potential to help others who were ill or in pain, he went all in and set out to create a premium product that would help with pain, anxiety, stress, insomnia and more. That product is aptly known today as Cloud N9ne Syrup, a CBD (Cannabidiol) product with nine all-natural herbs and melatonin amongst other ingredients. Vargas identified that CBD was incredibly useful in reducing inflammation and could even help with epilepsy, cancer, COPD (a respiratory disorder), MS, and more. Vargas recognized that CBD from marijuana plants has a higher concentration of THC, often higher than the 0.03% threshold, making it a Schedule I controlled substance in the eyes of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and thus illegal. Vargas decided that his products would be made from the highest quality full-spectrum industrial hemp CBD (full-spectrum CBD is considered better medicinally and has a full profile that includes all the plants CBDs, terpenes, and fatty acids together). It also contains no THC,

When asked about the growth of the parent company, Space Monkey, LLC, Joe is still sometimes in disbelief. “I can remember the days cooking the syrup in my father’s kitchen, and my father would help bottle the product while my kids helped with packaging and shipping.” The company has expanded considerably from the family operation to now include a licensed medical doctor and herbalist compounding the syrup and nine employees/contractors. Cloud N9ne Syrup is now the largest CBD syrup company and also the largest social media driven cannabis brand in the world. Vargas recognizes the need to continuously innovate and has recently launched a successful new product called Pure CBD Dabs and is a supplier of full-spectrum CBD (Co2 extracted) oil for medical patients and will be launching a CBD oral spray, CBD vape pens and other CBD products soon on BuyLegalMeds.com. Although the journey of Space Monkey, LLC and Cloud N9ne Syrup is not without struggle and has had its fair share of trial and error, Vargas is grateful that he managed to find happiness outside of the nightlife and media spotlight and contends that his family is not only what made it all possible, but also what made it worth the struggle. Vargas persevered through the toughest of times and although entertainment was financially rewarding and allowed for the achievement of

which makes it legal and allows his successful website, BuyLegalMeds.com, to ship product to all 50 States, Canada, and the U.K. His products are also found in retail stores all over America.

Currently, Ladah Law Firm has sixteen employees, including four attorneys and are in the process of adding a fifth. Every single one of Ramzy’s clients has his personal cell phone number, and he even personally answers all office phone calls outside of business hours. It was this type of customer service that built Ramzy’s practice from that of one case into thousands. Now, years later, and thousands of clients later, this practice remains unchanged. Clients come to Ramzy complaining that they never get to see or speak to their attorneys and so it is important to him that, despite the growth of the firm, he never becomes the kind of attorney who allows their practice to become a “mill” that treats clients like just a file on their desk instead of real people who have legitimate claims.

Ramzy’s first case was one that was turned down by approximately six different attorneys, all of whom essentially told the Clients that they had no chance of recovery. Within two months of handing that case, Ramzy was able to get it settled for the insurance policy limits of $300,000. There began a successful career of letting insurance companies know that he will not back down. At that time, Ramzy was the

Nothing But TLC at the Lanfranchi Center

D

r. Paul Lanfranchi’s character and integrity was evident when we sat and talked about his passion for his craft He is a board certified physician with specialty certification in Facial Plastic Surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. As the Medical Director of The Lanfranchi Center for Facial Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation, he is different than the average surgeon. His standard of core values that are listed on his website along with the mission statement and explanation of TLC culture separate him from others. These principles that he proudly boasts are empathy, passion, respect, discipline and honesty andare what The Lanfranchi Center embody. Dr. Paul Lanfranchi said “Passion is the driving element as The Lanfranchi Center (TLCSM) is enthusiastically devoted to serving patients with the highest quality of care, creating an exceptional

44

experience for patients with their success predicated not only from what they do, but how much TLC they put into it.” TLC’s core value list is not the only thing that separates itself from the likes of any other doctor office in the Valley. The Lanfranchi Center is the only Las Vegas center of its kind exclusively specialized in rejuvenating the face and neck. The affectionate and appropriate acronym “TLC” is what guests are sure to receive. According to Dr. Lanfranchi the most common misconception about this type of surgery is that it is a big, complicated process that fills patients with anxiety. “We strive to make each person that comes in have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience. And we are able to do that under our own roof to control each step of the way.” From the friendly staff that greets you

By Jennifer Miller-Gonzales

“We specialize in the craft. No one in Las Vegas can do what we do here.” at the door, to the consultation that includes an animated, fun, and light-hearted video to explain everything. Even post operation there is another door that clients can exit on the side of the building to ensure if they do not want to be seen immediately after their surgery they are ensured privacy. Dr. Lanfranchi has left no stone unturned to provide each client with the best experience. It was important to him that he is able to have each component of the procedure done under his roof, as with other procedures it can be difficult depending on the practice. Other surgeries will undergo deeper sedation and be forced to go outside of their office to a surgical center. The ease and convenience of having in-office set up all included is amazing. Patient experience is equal to surgical outcome. How the

patient feels through that process is imperative. One of the first things Dr. Lanfranchi focused on when opening up the center was finding a non-profit to partner with. When he first started his business, it was literally a priority to do something for the community. With the help of Ava Rose agency, he was able to find the “You Got the Power” organization.” The foundation services the local community for women, youth, and family who have been through a traumatic event in their lives. “I am able to donate my skill set in essence to a woman in need,” Dr. Lanfranchi said. After the almost 10,000 procedures Dr. Lanfranchi has done, he knows what a huge difference and major impact it makes in somebody’s life. He also acknowledged some will never have that opportunity, especially victims of trauma. When they are recovering on the inside they may not like the way they look on the outside. “To be able to give that gift to somebody that they never had is huge and something that I wanted to do.” Everything that Dr. Lanfranchi does has a purpose. From the ambiance of his treatment center to the logo and colors that were specifically designed and picked to keep the patient relaxed and each guest at ease. Every component intertwined at TLC is full of intention. Even the surgeries that he performs are very specific for a reason. “Staying focused, staying passionate, and knowing your niche. That’s my style.” Although the office does provide services like Botox, fillers, and non-invasive procedures that are more for existing clients to provide maintenance, for TLC, it’s not advertised but encouraged as part of good facial rejuvenation care and maintenance. “We specialize in the craft. No one in Las Vegas can do what we do here. I could do body contouring and start doing breast augmentation but why? We have a great niche that no one else can duplicate and I really do love what we do and the way we do it.” There is not a cement path for Dr. Lanfranchi and TLC for the coming years. Besides being a loving husband to his wife of eight years and amazing father to his twin daughters and son, he is focused on working hard. He even makes time to coach his son’s soccer team. Lanfranchi

does hope to be known specifically for facial rejuvenation and alignment staying true to their mission statement and becoming a household name. The plan is to keep things simple and just keep working hard and for the client providing a great experience and affordability. He knows that with great results, comes the option of expanding but he won’t allow bringing more people into the office without structure because it may water things down. At The Vision Centers, Our Focus is on You!

By Dr. Chiodo

T

he moment you walk through the doors of one of our locations, you can sense a difference. All four locations are contemporary and modern in design. But without a doubt, the main component and highlight is the extensive and fashionable selection of designer and exclusive eyewear. And then there is more! Vision Centers separates themselves from other optometrists by the care they take in each step of the Vision Centers experience. You will never have to question, do they acknowledge you when you walk in? Is the staff caring and friendly? Do they seem to know what they are doing? Vision Centers does all this but now you will have more questions like who is the doctor? Is the doctor up on the latest forms of testing and treatment? Will I get quick and accurate service related to all aspects of my visit? Will I generally be a valued and respected patient here? The staff at Vision centers will put your mind at ease. The sentiments emanating down from leadership are that the practice exists to serve our patients. This has been the vision from day one of our first location dating back to August 1994. The intention was and will always be great at what we do; the best. We are committed to achieving this result. Patients come to us because of relationships we build and nurture. We are a service and people oriented health care provider. The

staff, managers and doctors are handpicked. Then they go through a rigorous application process which none of our competitors use. Job applicants endure a process including personality and motivation assessment along with IQ testing. We feel this gives us the highest level of sophistication to assemble the most qualified staff to help treat our valued patients. Once hired, training is required and continuous. Not only will you love our staff but doctors are knowledgeable and good communicators. They explain and educate what’s being done and why; along with their recommended treatment plan. Our doctors have created one of the largest contact lens practices in the valley. They not only fit many of the daily disposable and monthly lenses but they also fit hard lenses and specialty lenses for some of the more difficult cases. If anything further is needed by a specialist, they will know! You can rest assured that your eyes are in good hands. Besides our great staff, managers and doctors we have our own in-house lab to create quick and accurate production of glasses. We also stay on the forefront of delivery and technology. We’ve employed electronic medical records for more

than three and a half years now. Our technology is state of the art, including an examination tool known as Optomap Retinal Imaging. This piece of equipment allows the doctor to view the majority of the back inside wall of the eye retina without having to dilate the patient’s eyes. The retina in itself could be considered to be a barometer for how well the rest of the body is doing. By using this it can be determined if the patient may be experiencing problems such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and more. Our patients are highly valued. Our entire community is important to us. Founder and executive director Dr. Christopher Chiodo, is now a board member for the Nevada Blind Children’s foundation and has been a strong supporter for many years. Vision Centers believe in serving our patients along with serving our community. We encourage you to visit any of our locations and feel the difference. It would be our privilege to help you with all of your eye care needs. MV Visit: visioncenterslv.com

Accident Q: I was involved in a T-Bone accident that was not my fault. The accident happened three months ago, but I was involved in a very bad slip and fall at my work a week ago, causing me to visit the ER. Will this affect my auto accident in any way? A: To recover bodily injury compensation a plaintiff must prove not only that a defendant was negligent, but also that the defendant’s negligence caused the plaintiff’s injuries. Thus, the defendant in your car accident case might argue that you are unable to prove which of your injuries were sustained in your car accident, as opposed to your subsequent slip and fall, and that you therefore are unable to prove your case. Assuming your slip and fall injuries were sustained to parts of your body different than those injured in the car accident, proving which injuries were the result of the car accident shouldn’t be an issue. In fact, it is often possible

Child Support Q: I have a 3 year old daughter. I have been in the process of talking with the man I had her with and he agreed to help me with taking care of her financially. I just filed for child support and now he refuses to pay anything. What’s my next step?

Samira Knight of Tarkanian & Knight Law Group

A: The most simplistic answer, is that if he is the biological father of the minor child he doesn’t get to choose his financial obligations to the minor child. He is obligated under the Nevada Revised Statute to pay child support. If you have opened a case with the child support division, then they will begin garnishing his wages for the amount required by statute. From my experience it could take up to three (3) months for the garnishment to begin, if they have identified his employer. I would contact your case worker and see where your case is, and see if they need any additional information from you.

* Please be advised that you should still seek legal advice to further elaborate, this is a general summary and proper legal advice cannot be given in such a forum.

to prove apportionment even where the same body part was injured in both incidents. This is frequently accomplished by comparing medical imaging scans (such as MRIs) that occurred between the first and second incident with scans conducted subsequent to the second incident. A more interesting issue arises if you are able to prove you injured the same part of your body in both the car accident and slip and fall, but unable to prove the extent to which the injury is attributable to each incident. In this situation the burden of proof as to apportionment shifts to the defendants. If the defendants are unable to prove the extent to which their respective negligence contributed to your injuries, then each defendant is jointly and severally liable for the entirety of your injuries (assuming liability can be established as to each defendant). Your question raises many more interesting issues than can be discussed here. Please consult with an attorney as I cannot provide legal advice based upon the limited facts presented. MV

Child Support Q: I was with my ex-boyfriend for 10 years and I was in an abusive relationship. I got pregnant by another man and absolutely couldn’t tell him in fear of mine and the babies life. My abusive ex signed the birth certificate. Now that I am a single mom I don’t know if I can go after the real father for child support, or my ex who is on the certificate. Will I qualify for child support if the mother did not sign the birth certificate? A: Only the biological father is going to be responsible for child support payments, unless there were other type legal parenting documents created. Also, another question the courts will have to address is the questions if you have ever had paternity testing done to confirm, and if you still are in possession of those documents. Unfortunately, you question cannot be simply untangled and answered solely on the information provided. Your first step maybe opening a case with the child support division, and see how much they can help. This all assuming, although you didn’t sign the birth certificate you are the biological mother of the minor child. MV

ou have set up your social media platforms that best fit your product and/or service and are most likely to reach your target customer. Now what do you do? What should you be posting on those platforms? It is important to remember that social media marketing takes time and patience. You want to build up a loyal community of customers and potential customers. This means that you want to post things that are educational and relevant to your business. Humor goes a long way but make sure it is always in good taste. Pictures are also very important so add them to your social media posts. NEVER take photos off the Internet, not even Google Free photos. There is often fine print that tells you there may

Short videos are also great to add to your posts. Think about the questions that your business gets asked all the time. Write these down as each one can be used as a post for your social media. Introduce your team and congratulate people for a job well done, birthday and/or anniversary with a picture on your social media. People want to know the people behind the company. Always ask people if it’s okay to feature them on your social media. If they agree, they will likely share the post with all of their followers on their social media sites. Social media

allows your customers to have a real relationship with you and they want to know the “inside” of the company. Be creative and have some fun with your postings. Always remember spelling, grammar and good manners. MV

recently watched the popular game show Family Feud, where the participants try to guess the top answers to questions in a survey from 100 random people. One particular question really caught my attention. They surveyed 100 women and asked them on a scale of 1 – 10, “how much do women need men?” I initially ignored my gut intuition and thought about the women in the United States that are incredibly dynamic – hence the awesome 100 Top Women in the past issue of MYVEGAS Magazine. As a society that encourages powerful, strong, independent, self-sufficient women, I wasn’t sure what the top response was going to be. Maybe a five? Well, I was pleased to hear the top answer from 100 women surveyed was a 10! I really wasn’t surprised. After all, if the same question was asked of 100 men, how much do men need women, I would predict the men would respond with a perfect 10 as well. That might be wishful thinking, however I believe we all need each other equally to thrive and grow and co-create fulfilling lives. I would like to congratulate all of the Top 100 Men in the current issue of MYVEGAS Magazine, and express my appreciation for men all over the world who add the balance, the ying and the yang, for a more interesting, enriched life for us all. “We’re clocking in at 95 pounds, a 2-pound drop in two weeks. She’s getting there,” said Dr. Aaron Bivens, at the South Buffalo Springs Animal Hospital. His patient is Miss Cherlee, a sweet Pitbull terrier who reluctantly stood on a shaky platform for a weight check. The moving foundation was one concern; perhaps the tough news was another. “She was limping on her back legs. She was in pain. Obesity is affecting the knees and now we have two blown knees. This morning (her parents) were considering euthanizing her,” says Dr. Bivens. But with a vow to work together and a diet and exercise plan carefully followed over the next 10 months, followed by surgeries to repair her joints. Miss Cherlee won’t be put down. In two weeks, there’s already progress but there’s another 20 pounds to go. While about one-third of American adults are obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 54% of dogs and 58% of cats are overweight or obese. Dr. Bivens, who runs the SBSAH “Biggest Loser” program says there are three ways to pull back the pounds: 1. Measure food. 2. Daily workouts. Walk early in the morning or late at night to avoid the extreme heat. 3. 3Show more affection through petting and praising instead of treats. Miss Cherlee’s mom isn’t off the hook. Dr. Bivens is working with her to stop using food as a sign of love. As with all weight loss plans, please check with a professional first. MV

Sharing Fall Foods with our Furry Friends

Ashley, Richard, & Tucker

F

all is a wonderful time of the year – cooler weather and plenty of healthy and delicious produce to savor and enjoy. Our pets look longingly at our food and we’re so tempted to share the bounty with them. We’re not sure though…should we share? Here are a few foods that we can safely give with a clear conscience:

Britten, Travis, & Stella

Sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts – These are rich in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Carrots - Plenty of vitamins, fiber and potassium. They’re ideal snack for dogs either raw or cooked. Cats can enjoy the benefits but it’s best to offer them cooked carrots.

Cadence & Betty Lou

Carri & Sadie

Pumpkins - This seasonal favorite you will be happy to know is low in calories and full of vitamins, beta carotene and fiber. Avoid pumpkin pie filling because they contain sugar and spices. Apples – The popular fruit provides antioxidants and Vitamins A & C. Important: stem, leaves and seeds are poisonous. It is also recommended to peel the skin. Cassie & Jimmy

If you do opt to share, these are a few tips to abide by. If you do offer human food as snacks, avoid feeding them too much at one time. It is best to offer one at a time since your pet may experience an allergic reaction or reaction to a specific human food. Be extra careful about prepared foods and check labels for added ingredients such as sugar, chocolate, and xylitol. Our pets will be thankful for their healthy fall snacks! I

t’s been a year since we welcomed our first born into our world, and my goodness, how that world has changed! Having a baby is a huge transition for everyone in the family, and that includes the fur babies. Unlike other members of the family, the pups don’t know WHY everything is different – so it’s important to make sure you don’t forget about their needs. One of our biggest challenges was trying to find ways to exercise the dogs. Before baby, they got walks every day, but after baby - daily walks just weren’t possible. So we try to have extra play time at the house, or take them with us when we run errands. Also I noticed their grooming started to fall behind because I just don’t have the time. Now I make sure both pups get their own puppy spa day at the groomers once a month! Special one-on-one time WITHOUT the baby around is key because it lets them know they are still important. For us, the best time for that is after the baby has gone to bed. It took a little time, but we found a balance that works and now everyone in the family is happy and healthy! MV

MY CAREER

Insecure in the Workplace?

T

he team is the current be-all, end-all of workplace organizational structure … and for mostly good reasons. However, we’ve all experienced the various challenges and, dare I say, indignities of working together with people in the highstress environments of the contemporary workplace. It’s important to recognize, though, that most of the issues that afflict the team are caused by our individual worries and insecurities bumping up against those of our teammates. And that’s good news, because by checking your insecurities at the door, you can immediately improve the whole team’s dynamic. Try some of the tips below. You won’t be disappointed in the results. Stop worrying about how much you need to learn - Many people don’t ask questions at work because they’re afraid of what others will think. But what’s worse, not asking and

By Anthony Lai

causing an issue, or asking and then doing your job right? You should never be afraid of asking relevant questions, especially to your co-workers. Questions show that you are interested, engaged, and intent on achieving the team’s goals. Remember though, that it’s good practice to try to find the answers on your own before asking. Stop worrying about how much others make - Focus on your own self-worth instead of investing effort in finding out how much others get paid, or worse, complaining about their pay once you find out. One of the most divisive issues on any team is salary. In most cases, if you’re happy with what you make, what teammates make should be a non-issue. If you’re not happy with your salary, prove your value to the team and to management by being the best employee you can be. Stop the gossip - Gossip is a common pastime among employees at just about every level. Sometimes it can be difficult to avoid talking about your teammates (Look at that hair, those pants!) but if you do not have anything nice to say than don’t say it. Gossip is a shameful, and indeed a mean way to make us feel better about ourselves. In the long-run, talking badly about others doesn’t help you address your own insecurities and issues may in fact, come back to haunt you.

Stop trying to be the favorite - Most people enjoy positive recognition and just as many want to be the boss’s star performer. But if you are not, don’t begrudge anyone else their place in the sun. Instead, look at what you’re doing and figure how to do it better, faster, and with a more positive attitude. Additionally, get used to the fact that you’re not always going to click with your boss or supervisor in the way that others do; this isn’t a problem unless you make it one. In conclusion, the next time your insecurities bubble up to the surface, use their re-emergence as an opportunity for some self-reflection. Remember that you have your job because the team believes in your abilities … why wouldn’t you believe in yourself? MV

Beauty and Essex

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID By Michele Polci, CPCE, CMP and Shauna B. Lederman, CPCE, CHE

W

e both were looking forward to trying Beauty and Essex. Just recently opened, their sister restaurant in New York has a great reputation, and we are both big fans of Chris Santos. You can’t turn on a food channel without seeing him. We were taken aback with awe when we walked through the door. The entrance is through a small retail/pawn style shop. While different from the New York location in the fact that all items are for retail sale, each item is extremely unique and specially curated just for Beauty & Essex, Las Vegas. Located in the back of the shop is an unassuming door that you think might lead you to a storage area. You open the door and it hits you: impeccable light, sleek, sexy, modern, eclectic, romantic, cool... all rolled into one. One of us loves her jewelry and thought it was like dining in the biggest jewelry box in the world. The restaurant is sizeable and has a number of appropriately named drinking and dining spaces, the Vault Dining Room, the Jewelry Box, and the Pearl lounge, to name a few. We sat in the Peacock Dining Room and were surrounded with beautiful silk tapestries and hundreds of frames with golden lockets swaying from them. Stunning golden chandeliers completed the look. There was no denying the sexiness of the room. Our server, Rico, was amazing and had unequaled knowledge of the menu. He had a very friendly and calming way about him and was able to guide us through our entire dining experience, making perfect recommendations. The menu was comprised with a number of plates meant to share and also included full entrees and tantalizing dessert selections. We wanted to try a bit of everything so small plates was the way to go for us. One of us started off with the Emerald Gimlet. This gem was made with Vodka, Basil, Lemon Nectar with fresh lime. It was as bright and refreshing as it sounds with an herbaceous and citrus flavor.

72

While one of us doesn’t care for sashimi, the other can’t get enough. We started with the Yellowtail Sashimi with Pickled Jalapenos and Barrel-Aged Fuji Apple Ponzu. It had a very clean flavor, as Yellowtail should and the apple flavor in the ponzu was unexpected but a perfect complement. The pickled jalapenos added a nice slow spice creating a wonderfully balanced dish. As we were finishing our first dish, the next one arrived. Avocado, Lemon, Espelette Toast was a selection we both definitely loved. Again, the dish had a clean flavor with just enough salt to bring out the flavor of the avocado. The brioche had a perfect degree of “toastiness” and the whole dish was rounded out by Espelette which we found out was from the “pepper” family. Again, we have to give mention to our server for when we asked for more information about the Espelette, he went and asked his manager to “Google” it so he could answer our questions. The timing of our meal was being coursed out perfectly and fresh plates were offered. The next two dishes that were served were Grilled Cheese, Smoked Bacon and Tomato Soup Dumplings and Thai Style Deep Fried Shrimp with Green Papaya and Mango Slaw. One of us doesn’t eat bacon so the kitchen took care and served it on the side. Served in Chinese soup spoons, the dumplings were nice and crispy and the soup had a tremendous flavor without being too acidic. One of us doesn’t care for shrimp in general but the other thought this was her favorite dish of the evening. The U-12 shrimp were plump and meaty with a mild spice.

We rounded out the dinner with Oven Braised Chicken Meatballs with Sheep’s Milk Ricotta Wild Mushroom and Truffle and Short Rib Mac and Cheese with Pickled Jalapeno Herb Cornbread Crust. While one of us loved the shrimp, the other thought the meatballs were her favorite dish. They were perfectly tender, with just the right amount of gravy and wild mushroom. Truffle can sometimes be overpowering but this was excellent and again complemented the dish the way it should. The ricotta was out of this world. The Mac and Cheese had perfectly cooked pasta and tender short ribs. The cornbread crust had a delicious mix of herbs and was nice and crispy. We were both so full by the time Rico suggested dessert, we didn’t think we could manage another bite! But manage, we did! We ordered the Devil’s Food Layer Cake. One of us was highly skeptical as she doesn’t care for chocolate but WOW! It was an enormous piece of layered cake covered in chocolate ganache and served with “milk” flavored ice cream. We rounded out dinner with the Strawberry Shortcake which was heaven on a stick. Similar to the Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Bars of our youth, this was made with “liquid” cheesecake, white chocolate, and frozen strawberries all covered with Cap’n Crunch and served on a stick. Amazing is really the only word needed here, and that’s what she said MV

Restaurant Review Crew:

Tequila Restaurante

T

equila Restaurante is your destination for your Mexican-infused meal. Located on 360 E. Tropicana off the Las Vegas Strip, the appropriately named establishment boasts a menu of tantalizing libations and Mexican cuisine in very generous portions. They offer cheerful service, fresh wholesome food in a festive engaging environment. The restaurant review crew came hungry and ready! Of course at a place that has “tequila” in the name we had to try a margarita! I had the recommended Pomegranate Margarita on the rocks and it was divine. The perfect blend of sweet and tart and I love drinks with a sugar rim. Our sever, Jasara was amazing and insisted on the queso y chips, saying “You cannot leave without trying.” And we agree! Guests can opt for cheese only but we decided to devour our appetizer with the Chorizo option. The warm queso and fresh crispy chips were delightful. The blend of cheese and Chorizo pleased each taste bud in all of our mouths. And each time we dipped a chip, we watched the gooeyness being pulled and stretched and then enjoyed all around the table. The RR crew ordered a variety of platters and opted to eat family style; sharing all dishes. Good thing we did because the portions were mas grande and we were all feeling familia!

74

The first order was the Cantina Burger which did not disappoint. This is not your average burger with an all-beef patty topped with a fried egg. The combination of ingredients in caused quite the fiesta on the palate. The Chorizo, fresh Pico de Gallo, Cheese, Guacamole, Spicy Aioli, sautéed peppers and onions left our biggest restaurant reviewer full. Next order was the Chimichanga that was very generously stuffed with beans, rice, lettuce, tomato and cheese. The enormous burrito was deep fried to perfection and finished with melted cheese. Guests can choose a sauce and meat or vegetarian. We opted for chicken and no sauce. And of course we had to try the Fajitas. They are served sizzling hot and popping. As Jasara brought us our plate every eye in the house was on our dish. It came with all the fajita fixings of romaine lettuce, lime, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole and warm tortillas. We ended with two desserts, the flan which is a very traditional egg custard drizzled in caramel sauce and the Cajeta filled churros that were topped with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Tequila Restaurante is open seven days a week.

They have a revolving menu of authentic family recipes. A ‘Revolving Menu’ of authentic family recipes that host continuous change in selection of seasonal entrees. Each one is reflective to a specific region of Mexico. Jesara gave us insight to the family vibe in the restaurant and let us know the entire staff is encouraged to come up with recipes to keep the menu fresh and the staff involved. The existing recipes are gifted from a long history of their staff. After one bite of each dish guests know that the chefs are utilizing the freshest of ingredients. We love that the plates are mighty in portions but prepared with pride. I know I will be back to try the Traditional Breakfast that they serve all day. The Chef prepares a ‘Daily Feature’ introducing new plates giving diversity to our local and repeat clientele. MYVEGAS Spotlight: Chef Guy Savoy

W

hen he turned 15 years old, he decided that he would be “a chef… or nothing at all!” His fate was sealed. His invaluable apprenticeship taught him about the satisfactions and hardships of his future career. His first steps were guided by Louis Marchand, chocolate-maker in his hometown. Next came the Troisgros brothers, who fascinated Guy Savoy with their elegant technique, then at Lasserre in Paris, the Lion d’Or in Genève and The Oasis in Napoule. He was then singled out by Claude Vergé who handed him the reins of La Barrière de Clichy.

At age 27, he opened his first restaurant in Paris and soon achieved recognition on the gastronomic scene. Guy Savoy is now settled at La Monnaie de Paris and owns five restaurants, one of them abroad, and a shop. Mention “gastronomic cuisine” and he will say that he is a restaurateur. Call him an artist and he will tell you that he is an artisan. However, rave that his food is the stuff of dreams and he will remark that only those who dream are capable of inspiring dreams in others. MV

FREE RECIPE! Crispy Line Caught Sea Bass with Delicates Spices Serves: 4 Preparation Time: 1 Hour 30 minutes Cooking Time 45 minutes INGREDIENTS 1 Line caught Sea Bass between 3 and 3 ½ lbs. With scales on 1 qt. of fish stock ½ Vanilla pod split and scraped 1 ½ lbs. of Swiss Chard 2 Lemons ½ Oz AP Flour ½ Oz Coarse Sea salt 7 Oz of Glucose 9 Oz Of Shitake Mushroom 6 Tbl of Butter 1 teaspoon of Spice Mix (equal part Sichuan pepper, Long Pepper, Black pepper, white pepper, yellow mustard seed and black mustard seed) ground 1 pinch of powder ginger 2 sprigs of parsley 3 tbl of Olive oil

PREPARATION Start by fileting the sea bass making sure to leave the scales on. Remove all the pin bones and portion the fish into 6 oz portion. With the bone of the sea bass start the stalk. Put the bones in a saucepan, add the vanilla pod and cover with water, simmer for 30 minutes on low heat while constantly skimming the top and removing all the impurities. After 30 minutes strain through a fine thieve and reserve. Prepare the Chard, remove the leaves from the stem and cut the stem in 2 ½ inch pieces. Remove the threads from the side of the Swiss Chard, and cut them in little sticks and keep them in water with half of a lemon. Cook the stem in boiling water in which you added the flour and coarse salt until tender and take out of the water. Cool down and reserve. Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Blanch the leaves in boiling water for 30 seconds, then cool them down in ice water. Make a syrup by boiling the glucose and 1 quart of water. Let cool and dip the Swiss chard leaves in that syrup. Spread them flat on a baking pan with a silicon mat (or parchment paper) and bake for 6 to 7 minutes. Let them cool down at room

76

temperature and cut into nice triangles pieces. Clean the shitakes under cold running water, and then pat dry. In a sauté pan melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the shitakes for 2 minutes, reserve. Make the jus by adding the fish stock, the rest of the butter and the juice of the lemon, add the ginger powder and reduce by half. Season the filets with fine salt and the spice mix on the flesh side. Heat a non-stick sauté pan with olive oil until almost to a smoking point and drop carefully the fish scale side down, cook until the scale are crispy and has a nice golden brown color. Careful, it will color fast. Turn them flesh side down and cook for another 7 minutes making sure to sear each side of the filet. Sauté the pieces of chard and shitake separately in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Chop the parsley leaves finely. To serve, place a pile of Swiss chard in the center of the plate, sprinkle the parsley on top of the chard and place the sea bass on top with the scales facing up then add the shitakes around the fish. Emulsify the jus with a hand blender and serve around the fish. Garnish with the Swiss chard leave chips. Et Voila!

try to cover the gamut with this column. From the super swanky strip locations, to the neighborhood pizza joint. Well now, it’s time to forget you have a diet, or a mortgage, and play (and eat) like a kid again at the brand new Dave & Busters located at Downtown Summerlin. This won’t be a review of the games (you can’t eat them, but you can beat them). However the food takes your normal bar fare, and makes, for the lack of a better term, that inner child in you crave practically everything. No highfalutin bruschetta here. Their apps include sinful starters like the Pepperoni Pretzel Pull-Apart (adorned with garlic butter and served with marinara sauce for dipping) or the dairy lover’s dream, the Three-Cheese Grilled Cheese Sticks. No explanation necessary. Just have them. Amazing. The entrees – there are many. There are some genuinely solid offerings, for any restaurant, on the menu. But this is Dave & Busters! You’ll find items like the Short Rib & Cheesy Mac Stack Sandwich and so-called “Legendary Burgers” that are so tall, your favorite big-mouthed politician couldn’t take a bite without a TMJ flare-up. For the healthier among us you’ll find a surprisingly stacked salad menu with delicious and health-conscious offerings including “The Lawnmower” which may be the most OCD salad you’ll ever lay eyes on, with each item of salad being lined up uniformly. Don’t go looking for health food on the dessert menu – you won’t find it. From the decadent Brookie Sundae Tower (which needs a building permit to construct) to the to-die-for Bananas Foster Pie, you’ll leave in a wheelbarrow… but you’ll leave satisfied. Look. If you are going to act like a kid, you might as well eat like one too. Come with an empty stomach and stretchy pants and stop in to try it for yourself. MV

MYKIDS & FAMILY

Suck It Up Buttercup

By Katie Bencze

L

ike every parent I struggle with the daily complexities of trying to raise kids to be decent human beings. I want them to be sensitive and empathetic but still assertive and confident. I want them to stand up for themselves and their friends yet know which battles to pick. I want them to believe in themselves enough to take risks, but still be safe. The more I think about it, the more I realize that everything I want seems a contradiction to itself. In the end, it’s all about balance. But how do I teach balance? That is the value to trying and failing. By simple definition…it’s letting them learn. On that note, I am realizing that the deeper I get into this parent thing, the more confusing it gets. My concentration has always been to try to establish good communication habits. I still feel strongly about this, but lately, I have to admit that it’s evolving. Previously, I put a lot of clout on effectively expressing one’s self and feelings, but like every other previous contradiction in parenting, I also believe that there is a time where my kids just need to learn to suck it up. Don’t get me wrong, being able to navigate emotions is very important. We want strong and capable children who are not ashamed of being flawed. But we live in an unpredictable world. There are times where I simply have no answers to why people do the stupid stuff that they do. How do I let my kids know that (unlike Disney) unhappy endings do exist and monsters are real… without creating a burden for them? I asked myself…what do I do with the things that are not solvable? Well, frankly speaking…I put on the old “stiff upper lip.” And the more I thought about that fact, the more I realized that this, too, has value. I will teach my kids that there is a time to put on a brave face. There is a time to fake it until you believe it. There is a time to engage. There is a time to let go. And, yes, there is even a time to suck it up. And even though my priority is to raise my kids to positively impact the world, it is also my duty to make sure they don’t get crushed by the weight of it along the way. So I will guide them in a new configuration of balanced possibilities. I will teach them that sometimes, they too will need to just suck it up. MV

fashionable. It was a challenging experience for her competing against eight others of Los Angeles’ top designers for the title. “It was challenging, full of drama and had me in tears a couple a few times. I didn’t think would happen until they asked me what my motivation for being on the show was and I said “I wanted to make my boys proud.”” Stacey is a mother of two wonderful boys and as a successful mom and entrepreneur, she continually works on building herself and her business. “My goal and my partner’s goal is to get on “Ellen” (show),” said Stacey Linde. And she is working hard on getting the name out there. Ice-T and his wife Coco have also taken a liking to the Teeny Wingkini outfits. Coco has said that the Teeny Wingkimis are so very cute! And every little girl should have one. Stacey and Kelly are also working on making dolls for the girls to purchase that will be wearing matching suits. They are also working on a boys’ line called the Pirates of Wingkini that will be similar in concept that the outfits will be good for multiple occasions. Stacey also recently won a contest on the TV show “Design Genius.” The show’s premise is to have the contestants make the unimaginable,

Britney Spears: An Icon of the 21st Century

By: Romer Cherubim

W

here have all the icons gone? There was a time when we were lucky enough to have our fair share of them. The 60s, in particular, spring to mind. We had Marilyn Monroe, the screen goddess, who was known almost as much for her private life as her films. Then, there was Princess Grace of Monaco. Born Grace Kelly, this Oscar winner also had a “colourful” off-screen life, turning her back on a potentially lucrative career in Hollywood for a life of splendor and comfort as the spouse of Prince Rainier. Who can forget Audrey Hepburn? This lady was not only a talented actress, but was also the epitome of style and glamour. What do all these women have in common? The answer is simple. They were sophistication incarnate. It is this characteristic, which we traditionally look for in an icon. Regrettably, we now live in an icon-free world. If we make comparisons to the icons of the past, we can, of course, mention Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge in the same breath. This well-educated, fashionable woman is seen by many as the standard-bearer for the monarchy in U.K. after the current Queen’s reign comes to an end. But, who else is there? What about Britney Spears? To many, the mentioning of Britney’s name in comparison to the above luminaries, would probably spark more than a hint of derision. What does Britney Spears have, which makes her special? The answer is longevity. Britney started as a child performer on television. However, it was the success of her first single as a singer “Baby One More Time” in the late 90s, which catapulted her to worldwide fame. Selling more than ten million copies, it is one of the best-selling singles of all time. Hit followed hit and life certainly was sweet for the girl, raised in Louisiana. Life became difficult for Britney in the late 2000s when she was fighting for custody of her children. However, the singer came back swinging. In March 2011, Britney released her seventh studio album and in 2012, she became a judge on the celebrated TV series “X Factor”. The highpoint of Britney’s career is her residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, which started in December 2013. All entertainment insiders know that a residency on the famous Las Vegas Strip is a major achievement for any performer. The fact that Britney accomplished this in her early 30s is all the more impressive and is testimony to her drawing power. Having celebrated an extension of two years to her residency at the end of last year, Britney is at the top of her game. She has proven her versatility also, launching a variety of fragrances in the 2000s and more recently a line of lingerie. Coping with all her business interests and the challenges of maintaining peak fitness for a long-term residency in Las Vegas, would be enough for anybody. Britney is also though a doting mother of two young boys, whom she has raised in a down to earth manner.

Britney is a modern day icon as she has all the qualities we look for in a contemporary heroine. Nowadays, people no longer view glamour as a bankable commodity. People are now more interested in a personality’s vices and indiscretions rather than any good qualities he or she possesses. Further, reality TV has contributed significantly to the general “dumbing down” of our senses as we find those “famous for being famous” more appealing than those, who have significant accomplishments in their chosen field. This is a regrettable part of our culture today. If there is anybody approaching iconic status nowadays, it is arguably only because that person has a capacity to overcome difficulties, both professionally and personally. The icons of yesterday may or may not have had this gift. However, the icons of today must have it. The perception is that there is no point being a glamorous personality if that quality by itself does not give you longevity in your career. Britney Spears has proven her durability and is still going strong. That is why Britney should be seen as the nearest thing we have to an icon of the 21st Century, so far. MV

DJ Hollywood: Music Entrepreneur

By Candice Shaffer

B

eing a DJ was not a divine calling for Lee Vlastaris. A natural musician who can play 11 instruments, he was just looking for another creative musical outlet. Simply put by the famous DJ, “It sounded like a good transition for me.” Las Vegas born, he migrated to New Jersey where he grew up. Upon his arrival back to Las Vegas in 1994, Vlastaris’ big break did not come immediately. In fact he experienced very humble beginnings in the evolving nightlife of Sin City. Around the age of 15, DJ Jimmy Jam christened him with the name DJ Hollywood in New Jersey, when he made an announcement: “This is DJ Jimmy Jam on 95.1 WAYV hanging out with my boy who looks like he’s from Hollywood, DJ Hollywood here at Tatengers Nightclub.” It stuck with him. His talents steered him to a nightclub gig. During 1994-1995 there were only a few nightclubs in Las Vegas. He was one of the token DJ’s that brought a new element of entertainment into the Las Vegas nightlife scene. In the 1980’s DJ’s at nightlife venues were put in small corners and not much of a draw. DJ Hollywood helped bring the term “world renowned DJ,” and the history of DJ’s being a massive draw for mega nightclubs abruptly evolved. Shaquille O’Neal was another big, notable name that he has worked with. He said “He was very fun to work with on different club events.”

players in nightclubs, which is now the world industry standard. Eventually, nightlife evolved and caught up with him. He presently owns and operates The Beatclan, which represents many different DJ’s, an astounding number of celebrities and recording artists.

Vlastaris has received DJ of the Year many times. Hollywood was both a staple and a pioneer in the nightlife industry in the 90’s, and the Beach nightclub was his where it all started. He helped revolutionize the fame of mega nightclubs on the Las Vegas Strip as Program Director and DJ of one of the most popular nightclubs of its time and in his young career, RA Nightclub inside the Luxor. DJ Hollywood has headlined and programmed virtually every Las Vegas club at one point in time, including the world famous PURE Nightclub at Caesar’s Palace. PURE Nightclub helped gain DJ Hollywood international fame while he met, mixed and mingled with celebrities and some of the most well known people in the world. Hollywood has worked side by side with numerous superstars such as DJ AM, Paul Van Dyk, Bob Sinclair, Tiesto, and Grand Master Flash. Hollywood is a trendsetter in the local nightlife scene and is credited and was shunned for over a decade for using Pioneer CD

Vlastaris felt like there was a need in the industry and he had a vision which evolved into Beatclan. It was his brainchild that was born in the early 2000s. “In 2009, Beatclan stepped in and Lee’s vision was to bring forth positive change and evolve. In a music industry full of bad deals and contractual nightmares, to be able to rep someone and ensure the performer left feeling like they were not going to be signing their life away, was extremely important to him. This notion was unlike other dealings within the industry. Majority of times, artists and/or performers would be subjected to this just to get traction and have the validation that they were a good performer. Beatclan is seeing the results. “We have been more successful than we imagined. We’re doing numbers that are crazy.” In 2010, the famed Las Vegas Mayor Goodman proclaimed December 23rd “DJ Hollywood Day” for his humanitarian work, and promoting the Las Vegas nightlife brand internationally for

88

over two decades. Hollywood has also graced the Las Vegas airwaves for more than a decade with his award winning radio show “Hollywood Blvd.” To sum it up, Hollywood’s talent and drive is sure to be a continued force in the Las Vegas scene for years to come. DJ Hollywood has used his passion to give back through various areas of humanitarian work, including, volunteering with the March of Dimes and Shade Tree. He has spoken at schools for Career Day discussing that being a DJ creates an opportunity to follow a passion and love for music while giving back to others. Today, DJ Hollywood is focused on building the Beatclan foundation, where he brings everyone together and builds up the community by building grants for specialty schools that may not be able to get funding. He recently started producing and has several tracks that he will be released soon. New father, he and his wife, Ashley, gave birth to their sweet baby boy about 10 months ago. Their sweet Julian fills their days with lots of love and tons of smiles. Being a business man and a new dad, Hollywood enjoys spending time at home with his wife and son and having them apart of his production. MV
