Che Palmer Crest

A School Crest is a required and needed part of a school's spirit and organization. It supplies our school and students with a symbol with which can be identified. Thus it fulfills our basic need for recognition from other schools. we It also provides us with something definite which we can refer to with pride and loyalty when we are asked about our school. This is why it is so important to have an understanding of School Crest. By this time, most of you should know what our School Crest looks our like. However, you very probably don't know why it was made as it was or what it represents. Therefore, here is a full explanation. The Crest's general shape is a modification of the shell, which was the symbol of the pilgrim, or PALMER during his religiousscallop to Jerusalem. The crest, which contains the two school colors~-powder bluejourney and navy blue, contains three main things: First, there is the large ''P" in the Griffin's This ''P"', of course, stands for Palmer. The reason for using only the one letter paw. was that it was thought that if other letters, such as J.H.S. or R.C. were included, it would the effectiveness of the rest of the crest without adding merely serve to detract from any necessary information to Second, there is the GRIFFIN which occupies the centre of the was picked because it was the central figure of most of the PALMERcrest (the Griffin family crests in England), According to "Shield and Crest" by Julian Franklyn, the Griffin is a quadruped of gigantic proportions having the tail and hindquarters of a lion and the forelimbs, wings, and head of an eagle, to which is added the ears of a lion. The Griffin has numerous virtues and apparently no vices (which of course makes it the perfect example of an average Palmer student). Among its virtues, the Griffin possesses vigilance, courage, strength and intelligence. It is sharp of eye, keen of ear and faithful. All in all, this noble beast is an excellent symbol for a school with the high standards of Palmer. Third, and most important, is the Palmer School "KyAo<" which is an ancient Greek word meaning ''To Honour", "To Glory," or ''Tomotto So far, we have the disFame." tinction of being the only known school in Western Canada with a Greek Motto. When one puts all the facts together he comes up with a crest that is both very meaningful and very distinctive. It is a crest that all other Lower Mainland schools have come to know and

respect.

&

ifor’s Hlessaae As you may know by now

is

the "Pilgrim and his our theme "pilgrimage". A pilgrim is also a

“yalmer'. Now, have you caught on yet? Well, let me explain a little further. Every pupil in this wonderful establishment of ours is a "palmerite'' hence a "pilgrim". If you haven't seen the light, I'll have to let you find out for yourself from our various

other messages. If this is confusing, don't worry about it, sooner or later, you will understand. Of course, there are those, who--even by the time Charlie Brown wins his first baseball game, mini-skirts become belts, Snoopy shoots down the Red Baron and the only

difference between boys and girls is that one of them shaves her legs--will never understand. But don't give up. In case you hadn't noticed, all of us (teachers and students) make a pilgrimage to school. Once there, we try to make a pilgrimage down our hallowed halls. I'm sure that most people know why I say “try''. It's easy if you're six inches tall and two inches wide. Of course, even then, you're in grave danger of first being noticed, second, ridiculed and lastly destroyed by a crushing onslaught of fellow students. There are many other examples; our journey up the down staircase, around the fields for laps in P.E., you couldn't name them ali, and you learn something from each one of them. From the former, rules are made for a purpose and from the latter, that you really weren't in such great shape. As I said, a lesson from everything. That's cause and effect. But it all prepares us for our pilgrimage in life, so there is a reason for it all.

Interviews the Vice-Principal Mr. Shaw is one of the busiest people in the school. His day is varied and full of new problems face. There are never two days which are the same. Besides teaching Grade 8 Math he deals, in general, with discipline and attendance. (Mr. Shaw and Mr. Errico work on the major problem together). The time at which he is the busiest is just before and after one o'clock. During that time there is hardly a day that goes by when there isn't an accident reported. The busiest season of the year is June when all the timetables for next year are being planned. Mr. Shaw feels that the value of the yearbook might Would the teachers in charge not be appreciated fully until you are older. The school please send............ activities are a ''must'' in any school to encourage school spirit (and to relieve boredom ?). Mr. Shaw also feels that the amount of hair a boy may have on his head has nothing whatsoever to do with his social or academic standard. He said people who make snap judgements on teenagers have obviously not been in contact with them. ‘I think there is nothing more rewarding than working with the young people today.

1967-68 has been my most enjoyable year at Palmer. Jeanne, Donna, Kathy, myself and the 28 class presidents, with the help and guidance of Mr. Shaw have tried to make it varied and enjoyable for the whole student body. Slight changes in dances and mixers, and the new time clock were all well accepted. More than twice the number of rings were sold this year than in 66-67 and we feel that Palmer's school spirit soared higher than ever before.

The Yearbook staff wishes to thank Mr. Shaw and the 1966/67 Students! Council who enabled us to set up the dark room for developing and printing our pictures, We also wish to thank the 1967/68 Students! Council for buying us a camera. We feel that with this new equipment we can go on to bigger and better productions. We hope that this issue proves our point and that you are pleased with the results.

Palmer

When the Journalism Club was publishing its second yearbook, we sent the editor to interview Mr. Palmer in order to have some of his opinions, his memories, his ideas and his suggestions in a tribute to him, since our school was named after him. The boys who went to the interview found him interested, affable, and favorably inclined toward this one more project or aspect of Palmer School life. It was no surprise, since he had always taken an extreme interest in the School and all its activities. During his interview, in answering a question about hobbies and relaxation, he mentioned the many happy hours he spent cultivating roses which he found interesting and the products of which provided some beauty. Goodness knows that Palmer's students have never been identified with--or accused of being a bouquet of roses (or even compared to one) but, since, during his lifetime, Mr. Palmer did find us interesting, and since he often came to be with us during special functions and assemblies, and, since, as Palmerites, we bear his name--then let us remember to keep the name of Robert C. Palmer School one to be proud of. If he could be here, I am sure that he would affirm that he would best like to be remembered in this way. In matter of fact, it may be a more difficult task and be a greater challenge than just paying lip service to his memory. And perhaps "that''--is as it should be too.

CAN WE CALL THIS HAPPINESS?

Gather round you children You children so free, While I tell you of people Less fortunate than we.

far off lands Where the valleys are low Lay half-starved children With no place to go.

In THE AWAKENING We

start our lives with careful guidance

and as we awaken to the world around us we

rebel against this neatly planned road. Our awakening years seem to start when we are forced to face reality. Each individual faces reality at a different time andina different way, some never learn to face

it.

Today's age is to think new ideas and to try to express them within the law. All of us are trying to advance in some way or another. Many of the young are seeking peace and beauty for they are tired of this society in which they are forced to live. Too many, though, are seeking in the wrong direction and end up on a dead end road. One must look all around him before he decides which is right. His guidance as a child should be his foundation for the conclusion he makes.

Maryann Isaac THE GULL White soaring symmetry, a poem of motion Aloft, a creature of the air, whose home is the endless ocean. In pensive mood, I ponder flight, The gull, how far its travels, what height!

Its form so balanced, its flight serene, And yet, how can its temper be so mean. Its flight like an arrow, a fearful thing The gull, will take its food upon the wing. This bird will set a seeming endless glide wind and restless tide. And when the day's light shall cease be, The gull, 'twill sleep upon the sea.

ON THE KURO THIO

I am starting my life on the island Mikura surrounded by the Kuro Thio or

night and I can see the stars twinkling in their dark bed. Everything seems safe but I can sense danger near, my companions are too quiet. Suddenly, as if from nowwhere, the fog has engulfed me. As hear breakers against a beach I begin to think it is the end for I don't know there are rocks or not. Dashing in the waves I think back to the storm when I was in those same waves and I know isn't the end for it wasn't then. The sun has broken and realize I have hit land. I can hear cries, but they are not of an albatross, they are of a light-skinned child.* Feeling myself being picked up, I hear the words ''Tophino" and I know my travels are over at last.

Q.-Do you think there should be any changes in the educational system of today ? A.-Yes, in the school 1 am teaching at now, we have closed circuit T. V.'s anda Film Library which is shared among all Vancouver Schools. Also we have team teaching which is the gathering of all students of a certain grade in the school gym to see a film or play or read a book. The students then gather for an hour in groups of 6 to 8 to discuss what they have seen or studied. A final hour is then spent putting all the

ideas forward which are discussed and then questions are asked. I also feel school should have more money to work

with. Miss Pellow

(teaching in Toronto, Ontario)

Q.-What courses are you teaching now and do you find them much different ? no longer teaching P.E. History

A.-I am

and Geography are taught as separate subjects in Ontario. I teach both. The courses are very different from those at Palmer. The P.E. courses are just about the same except that there are less outdoor sports because of the colder Ontario weather. Dancing is also stressed more in Ontario schools. @.-Do the students have more or less freedom in the schools of Toronto? A. -I would have to say that the students have less freedom. They have only 3 minutes to get from one class to another. No one is allowed to go to the washroom, to their locker or get a drink during class changes. Students serving detentions for tardiness, etc. must stay until 4:45 in the detention room. Ifa student gets sent down to the office quite often, he is suspended from school for any length of time from 3 days to 6 weeks. Strapping so far as 1 know, is not done in my particular school. @. -How would you compare the students' attitude with ours ? A. -The same. 97
