First of all, the annual staff would like to apologize for the delay in publication this year's annual. There were many underlying reasons for this annoying delay. The major one, however, was the apathy which not only affected this year's yearbook but also reached every phase of our school life, The "70's will be a decade of tremendous change. We can now observe the roots of this change in the war in the Far East, the violence in the U.S. A., and the large scale labour unrest here at home. To cope with change the individual must be informed and involved. This will be our duty in the years to come. The staff worked long, hard hours on this annual, and overlooking the delay suffered by everyone, we sincerely hope you enjoy these 112 pages of memories. of

Principal - Mr.

H.

Lindsay

Bob Dylan sings, ''The times they are a-changing', and nowhere are the demands for change more evident than in the field of education. We must accept this challenge together, making certain that the innovations which occur are not merely the result of emotion, of change for the sake of change, but are the outgrowth of mutual planning and careful weighing of desired outcomes. We must not lose sight of our basic values as we investigate new techniques and areas of learning. We must, above all, remember that we will be subjected to many pressures, many prejudices, many opportunities to act without thought of consequence, and must be alert to detect truth, half-truth, and outright lies. Such is the challenge of change.

A

student looks at Crown Zellerbach

By Bob Greenhalgh, Annual Editor

Crown Zellerbach Canada is a fully integrated forest company, with operations including logging, pulp and paper and building materials manufacturing, as well as distribution and shipping operations. The company is widely diversified in its products, which range from Zee brand household paper products to lumber and plywood. It even sells building materials in its « own retail outlets on the Prairie. Forestry operations include several tree farms and the company annually plants more trees than it cuts. The above picture was taken at the Crown Zellerbach plant in Richmond on the South Arm of the Fraser River. This plant covers 112 acres and is the division headquarters for the manufacuring and marketing of corrugated containers, bags, Zee tissues and other paper products. The basic purpose of the Richmond plant is not the manufacture of pulp and paper but the conversion of paper stock into marketable products. To do this, the plant

24

employs some 440 people. “Raw” paper arrives at the plant in jumbo rolls. This paper is then cut, folded, glued, and printed as required by the customers. These rolls are transported from the company’s paper mills to the Richmond plant on barges almost as large as a football field. Boxes and paper goods from the Richmond plant find their way into virtually every industry, store and home in Western Canada. Boxes and wrapping paper, grocery bags, waxed paper for lunches, all of these and more come from the Richmond plant. Corrugated board is produced on a corrugator, a block-long machine which can turn out a 16 mile long sheet of board in eight hours. Custom made corrugated boxes are made when sheets of board are run through a printing press and then cut, folded and glued as required. Each year over 850 million paper bags are produced. These range from lunch bags to heavy duty paper bags for industry.

In 1964 Crown Zellerbach opened up a research center in Richmond. This particular research operation is currently specializing in wood products research. The Crown Zellerbach pulp and paper manufacturing complex at Elk Falls is currently engaged in an air and water pollution control program. This program is designed to conserve and protect our air and water resources. As well as being interested in conserving air and water, Crown Zellerbach is interested in having full use made of western Canada’s great forests. Acres upon acres have been opened to public usage in the past few years. Since 1956 the company has pioneered a public access program in B.C. aimed at opening up more of B.C. to British Columbians.

RESTRICTION What pleasures dine on friendship mine Knowing of the other half unkind Talking of secrets and knowledge dear

Where more is meant than meets the ear

Of looks to my eyes a maze

Entwined in the friendship's follical gaze vision of surface, where tears do weep Seeing not the truth of the deep

A

To dodge the flame of quizzical fire But from the learned heat, inspire Of thought and meditations meek Do realize how friendships weak To think so kindly of one another When presents dispersed, something other Than the innocent babes at play Royal doors close no other way To face whose invocative inquisition Too much to lose a premonition Of our silver thin thread be clenched None of our sanity from us be wrenched. SEASONS OF LIFE In the

springtime of my ignorance Sights and sounds of words combined Arouse and infuriate my arrogance! When flaired and on my ego reclined.

Confronted by knowledge and rules Belittling myself inside I know Do claim the possessors of experience, fools. To the depth of ""Mindville" do go. To hide from the pulsating temples Pounding at my ignorance, expanding Learning the vastness of knowledge temples When finding the more I know, less rebounding Into the summer When in the heat Does to strike a On the container

of my confusion of social fires blow, inflict contusions of demented quires

To sing of Blackbirds on the trees When nature's bees are gathered by pollen The joy of life disguised as hardship, to my knees Increasing each blow, "til I have fallen To the multicolored leaves of Fall When the trees do lose their costumes Chilly standing naked to the eyes of all But not penetrating my fancy plumes

Ea,

THE YOKE

Laugh, laugh, chuckle a little bit Turn around on the barstool sit Walk along the sea wall, ... call Climb a tree, break a branch, ... fall Gaze at the brush on the chalkboard ledge stay home, trim the hedge Cruise along the road, flickering white line Daydream of dreams because the day is fine On a sunny day

What is the society of the anthill mill? Watch the ever growing pool on the window sill Sifting sand on the beach of life Carved a primitive necklace with my knife

Trudging the hours of work, I'm tired Fighting the reason for why I was hired Wish I was home in the shelter of bed To sink in ecstasy under my pillowed head

nerves all astray Spooky, short-handled, thoughts in array Snap at people when I do not agree I have all my freedom but I am not free.

From hate and disgust I am presently yanked Where is the warm smiling face, be thanked Down to up and down again, ...to come up I'd like to meet the chef of the herb I've supped created these foods and the need Also created the not so unfortunate certain bread That without the ups and downs special antidote The ark upon the liquid famine would not float

He who

To do wrong of right in his image delves Creation also of the substitute valves Pressures of the geysers from inner hell Polluted raindrops yet unpurified fell, Did not extinguish the heat of the fire Intensified the heat, drove the pressure higher Flames of multicolored views, hidden in smoke Prodded and goaded, ...the heavier the yoke

The longer it rains the wider the moat If not bridged, a certain loss, the war of the antidote War is not won on the battle field, but on the shelves Of the strategists, never wrong, those that delve In the war and the battle and the blood asunder While the one leading the foe, ...free to plunder Now the thickening multicolored smoke

Is getting heavier the heavier the yoke.

Camelot's 'Guenevere'! was played by lovely Susan Cleminson, from Texas. 66

Gym Show General practices for the shows started on the morning of February 23rd. I don't know whether everyone had the "Monday morning blues" or not, but when I watched the boys skillfully fall off the vaulting box and the girls

perform their exercises surprisingly well. Everyone knew their places (or at least it looked that way) - the acts

=

went by fairly smoothly and the equipment crew was quickly able to change (the equipment, that is) between the acts. There was a good turnout for the student performance which lasted for just over two hours. The Tuesday night performance started ten minutes late. On the Wednesday night

performance - which by the started on time, Mr. Lindsay gave a short speech. Then Jim Scorgie and Susan Gilbert presented gifts to the P. E. teachers on behalf of the students. The first act then started way -

about 8:10 and the show ended the same time as the night

before,

Two hours was a good length for the show - long enough for the audience to get their moneys worth but short enough so as not to create boredom. In conclusion, I would like to say that for the short time in which the students were able to practise, the show was excellent, The wide range of acts, whether they had good comment or not, were a must for this type of gym show as they displayed the many activities of the P. E. gymnastic periods. It was really an enjoyable show to watch.

On Friday, March 20th, Richmond High's girls basketball team beat Penticton, 3621 in the semi-finals of the B. C. Championships. Claremont beat Salmon Arm in the second game on Friday which meant Richmond and Claremont would compete in the finals on Saturday. Both teams played magnificently Saturday night but, unfortunately for Richmond, Claremont was victorious. The final score was 35-28. Besides receiving the second place trophy the team also received a pennant showing that they had partici-

pated in the championship; and each member was given a certificate and a crest. Jeanne Ball and Bev Bland were picked for the first all-star team, Barb Simpson was chosen for the second all-star team and Carol Turenne was awarded honourable mention. The other girls on the team Vicky Williams, Gail Hamon, Connie Brunatti, Diana Ham and Heather Urwin - are also to be honoured for contributing so much to the team throughout the year. By reviewing the accomplishments of the girls it will

be easy for everyone to see just how '"'super' these girls really are. They won the

Vancouver City Championships, the Crohan Cup, the Jewel's Tournament at Salmon Arm, Vancouver and District Championship, the Delbrook Trophy and then second place in the B. C. Championships. I hope this penetrates everyone's minds - Richmond High's girls basketball team is the second best team in all of British Columbia!

THE 1970 REACH FOR THE TOP TEAM:

Andrew Pavey Robert Greenhalgh Rosemarie Nowicki ,

Janet Young

|

This year, Richmond High was well represented by a well-qualified team, in

its annual battle on

C. B.

C.'s

"Reach For The Top'' television quiz show.

Although they led their opponents from Cenntenial Secondary in the first-half of competition, they

fell to a narrow-margined defeat in the last few minutes of

play. All those who attended the video-taping at C. B.C. studios on West Georgia or watched it on television enjoyed it immeasurably. Congratulations Richmond!
