Why Ammonia is Not Used As a Fertilizer? Some people may believe that anhydrous ammonia fertiliser can both fertilise and encourage plant growth. However, utilising home ammonia in the garden causes more harm than good. Knowing how this chemical works and how it affects plant development should make you reconsider using it as a fertiliser. Plants and Ammonia Ammonia is a nitrogen source for plants that can be found in soil, water, and the air. Nitrogen increases output by promoting plant growth and improving fruit and seed production. It's also necessary for photosynthesis, which converts light energy into chemical energy in plants. Aqueous ammonia and ammonium and hydroxide ions are formed when ammonia in home cleaners is diluted in water. Even though ammonium ions are a good fertiliser, aqueous ammonia is poisonous and can harm or kill plants. Effects of Ammonia in the Home Plants watered with a diluted dish soap solution were compared to plants treated with a diluted window cleaner solution containing ammonia in a study conducted at Miami University. Both methods eventually killed the plants. Before killing the plants, the window cleaner delayed and inhibited their growth and dried out the soil. Plants are similarly affected by ammonia, which discolours them and causes their roots to burn. pH of the soil and ammonia The accessibility of soil nutrients is determined by the pH of the soil, which can vary from zero to fourteen. Acidic soil has a pH lower than 7, neutral soil has a pH of 7, and alkaline soil has a pH greater than 7. Most plants can quickly access nutrients in the soil with a pH range of 6 to 7. When diluted ammonia is applied, the soil becomes more alkaline. However, it is converted to nitrate over time, taking as little as a few days, making the soil more acidic, which isn't good for many plants and may create a climate where plants have difficulties acquiring the nutrients they require. The proportion of ammonia to nitrate conversion is determined by the method and amount of ammonia given to the soil.
