Summer 2019

This remarkable year at Sisu has brought an old nursery rhyme to mind: Mary, Mary, quite contrary, How does your garden grow?

With silver bells and cockle shells all lined up in a row!

This particular nursery rhyme may seem silly, but would the typical person put cockle shells in their garden of silver bells? I had the same question, and upon a little research, discovered that cockle shells were used to provide nutrients to the ground in order for a garden to flourish—which Sisu has done a lot of over the past year. So, in honor of all the recent, innovative changes here at the school (which, I think, rolls over into the community), I rewrote the nursery rhyme: Sisu, Sisu, quite contrary How does your garden grow?

With curious students, creative teachers, Skilled therapists, and caring nurses, All lined up in a row!

Like Mary and her garden with cockle shells, Sisu, Integrated Early Learning is distinctive in its practices, especially when compared to the “typical” preschool. The administration and board at Sisu spent this past year creating unusual partnerships—the cockle shells to nourish our “garden” of a school and help it prosper. One such partnership entailed advising a group in Augusta who was looking to create a Sisu-like center; in helping them, it was remarkable to be reminded of all the incredible services that Sisu provides for children. Another exciting opportunity, Sisu was designated a Georgia GOAL scholarship school this year—one of just a handful of preschools in the state to receive this state tax-funded opportunity.

Over the year, Sisu’s strategic planning committee dedicated time to revising the mission and vision of Sisu to help capture the different partnerships and the growth we have both experienced and for which we strive. The new mission and vision reflect the “why”, “what,” and “how” of Sisu and the operations needed to strive for excellence.

Mission: To serve children through innovative educational, therapeutic, nursing and family support services in an inclusive environment Vision: Sisu will be an inclusive program of excellence in early education that ensures children and families receive the highest quality of learning and care, establishing academic and lifelong success through innovative strategies and collaborative leadership Please, take a moment to see our garden and how it grows. Notice that we are serving children with an incredible team of talented people who have made it their mission to serve others.

We are grateful for the support from our peers, donors, school systems, benefactors, corporations, foundations, and United Ways. This combination of partnerships helps our garden grow!
