Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin

As the oldest community on the Upper Mississippi River, Prairie du Chien has been a traditional gathering place for centuries. The native people of the area met on the prairie in friendship to exchange goods. In the late 17th century, French fur traders used the prairie as a site for spring and fall rendezvous. It was during these years that the land received its name, which translates as “Prairie of the Dog� in French. When the British took over the fur trade, Prairie du Chien became of greater importance because whoever controlled the prairie, controlled the entire Upper Mississippi watershed. After years of fighting for control of this land, the British eventually left the fort, leaving the residents of Prairie Du Chien and the Native American Indians. Discover the rich history lining the streets of this historical city as you explore the treasure Prairie du Chien has to offer!

Included Prairie du Chien Hop-On Hop-Off C r aw f o r d C o u n t y C o u rt h o u s e & 1800s Jail

The courthouse as it stands today was built in several stages. The oldest section, facing Beaumont Road, was built in 1867.

Crawford County was established in 1818 with Prairie du Chien as the county seat. In 1836, when Wisconsin became a territory, the first courthouse was built on this site. A “Dungeon” was built within the basement of the early courthouse and this structure. The main function of the jail was to hold felons, and the dungeon was used until the present jail was erected in 1896. Approximate time: 15 - 45 Minutes

F o rt C r aw fo r d M u s eu m

Built under the direction of Col. Zachary Taylor, Fort Crawford was one of a chain of forts constructed on the Mississippi River frontier to secure the territory for the United States.

At Fort Crawford, treaties were conducted with the Indian nations. In 1832, Black Hawk was surrendered to Colonel Taylor to end the Black Hawk War. Dr. William Beaumont was one of the surgeons assigned to Fort Crawford, and while at Prairie du Chien conducted some of his research on human digestion. In the Hospital are exhibits on Dr. Beaumont and military surgeons, Fort Crawford and its history, and the Swift United States Army Hospital and the Civil War. The modern history of Bettendorf, Iowa began about 180 years ago, when Dr. John Emerson, a U.S. Army surgeon at Fort Armstrong in Rock Island, purchased a 320 acre section of land within present day city limits and built a cabin on the property. Dr. Emerson owned a black slave, Dred Scott, who later sued for his freedom in federal court and whose case became a defining moment in the struggle to end slavery in the United States. By the early 1850’s, a man named Lillienthal settled near State and 13th, built a home, and opened a business. Other settlers followed. The settlement became known as Lilienthal and later merged with Gilbert to become Bettendorf.

Explored in 1673 by Pere Jaques Marquette and Louis Joliet, the land that is now Des Moines County changed hands from France to Spain, back to France and finally to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. After Lt. Zebulon Pike’s expedition landed at what is now Crapo Park in 1805, it was part of several territories – Louisiana, Indiana, Missouri, and Michigan. In 1834, residents named the land “Burlington” after trader John Gray’s Vermont hometown. When Iowa was named a territory in 1838, Burlington remained the capital. There are nine galleries on three levels in the Museum, each one addressing a different aspect of county history. The interior showcases the furnishings and belongings of the Garrett and Phelps families who lived here for more than 100 years. The ballroom on the third floor features Medical Memories, which highlights the years this home served as the first Protestant Hospital. In the 1940s and 1950s, blues music became extremely popular and Helena was the center of it all. King Biscuit Time is the longest running blues radio show in the entire country and it has served as an inspiration for many famous musicians. The show started in 1941 and was the only radio show in the entire country to feature African American musicians. The year it began, a group of African American blues musicians were given one hour on the radio on the condition that they sign a sponsor, which King Biscuit Flour agreed to do.

For months Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee were trying to overtake Vicksburg, Mississippi – “ The Key to the South” as described by Abraham Lincoln. In late May 1863, Grant undertook a new campaign to gain access to this vital river city. After many attempts, Vicksburg still fought back and caused the Union Army to fall back. Grant chose to attack again full force at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge, weakening John C. Pemberton’s Army causing it to retreat. Both Confederates and Union soldiers suffered drastically, but finally on July 4, 1863, Pemberton surrendered to Grant, leaving the Mississippi River in Union hands.

This incredible church spans over 125 feet long, 52 feet wide, and reaches 61 feet high to the apex of the roof. G r a c e E p i s c o pa l C h u r c h Built in 1860 and rebuilt in 1893 after the Union caused heavy damage in 1863, Grace Episcopal Church stands tall in St. Francisville. The church is one of the state’s oldest Protestant churches that still stand today.

The oak trees lining the grounds were planted in 1814, and Catalpa’s oak alley is thought to be the only one in Louisiana which has an elliptical shape.

On your guided tour of Catalpa, an American Queen Steamboat Company exclusive, you will learn that it was primarily a cotton plantation in the antebellum period, and its grounds were devastated during the Civil War, and the plantation house burned.
