SSC Opens New Multicultural Wellness Center SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The grand opening of the new Multicultural Wellness Center at South Suburban College’s (SSC) main campus in South Holland is announced for Thursday, February 1st. An Open House for students, staff, and the local community will be held from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to view the multiuse space, meet the staff, and learn about the programs and services offered.

Funded through the Mental Health Early Action on Campus Act grant, SSC has established its inaugural Multicultural Wellness Center, acknowledging the diverse needs of students. This center, focusing on six pillars of wellness (Physical, Intellectual, Occupational, Spiritual, Social, and Emotional), adopts a holistic approach to promote a balanced state of well-being and enhance academic success. The Wellness Center provides information, resources, mental health crisis intervention services, and educational workshops. Additionally, it offers a space for meditation and reflection.

The Wellness Center welcomes all students during open hours, providing support without the need for scheduled appointments.

Why Illinois should invest in more bilingual teachers

By ERIKA MENDEZ and REBECCA VONDERLACK-NAVARRO Latino Policy Forum For years, enrollment in Illinois’ public schools has been on the decline, but the number of English Learners (ELs) – students in PreK through 12th grade who require additional programming to develop academic English enabling their full participation in school – is on the rise. From 2010 to 2011 to SY2020-21, the EL population in Illinois has more than doubled, from 156,888 to 245,592 students. These students require qualified bilingual educators to succeed. Without such teachers, vital lessons in math, science, and reading fall by the wayside.

According to the recent report by Advance Illinois, “The State of Our Educator Pipeline 2023,” the demand for qualified bilingual educators has reached a critical juncture. This report underscores the challenges in Illinois’ educator pipeline and serves as a rallying call for a diverse and highly skilled workforce of educators. Critically, the report points out that in SY21-22, 12.3% of bilingual educators were not fully licensed to teach compared to 1.0% of all teachers.

In other words, the fastest-growing group of students in the state often do not have equal access to the education afforded to English-proficient students because there simply aren’t enough teachers with the specialized knowledge and skills to effectively teach these students in both their home language and English.

Research unequivocally shows that when English Learners receive high-quality language instruction in both English and their home language, they are significantly more likely to excel academically. While the bilingual teacher shortage disproportionately affects Spanish-speaking Latino students, it has far-reaching consequences, impacting young students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

While Illinois has made steps to address the bilingual teacher shortage, changing student demographics means Illinois has more work to do. According to the Advance Illinois report, the number of English learners rose to over 260,000 for the 2022-23 school year. This number is already higher with the growing number of newcomer students in Chicago and surrounding suburbs. The success of these students rests on having a sufficient supply of bilingual educators to meet their needs.

in-school factor for English Learner achievement. They believe that students’ home language is an advantage rather than an obstacle to their learning. These educators use theoretical knowledge and specific strategies to support this unique group of students, ensuring they receive quality education.

But where can Illinois districts find quality bilingual teachers?

Fortunately, we are not in the dark here; we have evidence-based solutions within our reach. The Latino Policy Forum recently collaborated with the State Board of Education to offer guidance: 1. High School Seal of Biliteracy recipients: By engaging with high school students who have earned recognition for exhibiting college readiness in both English and a foreign language, we can lay the foundation for a bright future. In Illinois, Educators Rising offers a compelling model and curriculum for recruiting high school students into the teaching profession. Those on the path towards the Seal of Biliteracy represent a prime source of potential candidates for this program.

2. Paraprofessionals: School-based classroom staff, with their multifaceted roles, including direct translation, are an invaluable resource. They often mirror the linguistic diversity among students, with one in five paraprofessionals speaking a language other than English at home.

3.Career-Changers: Community members who share the same language as students and possess bachelor’s degrees in non-teaching fields hold the key. This group can be recruited to earn a provisional license, enabling them to start teaching while working toward full teacher licensure.

Illinois has made progress in investing more than $100 million in educator growth, but with the loss of sustained COVID funding and competing budget priorities in Springfield, more resources are required to maintain this momentum. Addressing the bilingual teacher shortage is an investment in our state’s future, preparing English Learners to excel academically and contribute fully to our diverse society. Evidence supports the critical role of well-prepared bilingual educators. Leaving these students behind is not an option.

Resilience: Bounce Back

by Janice R Newman Ups and downs unfortunately come throughout life. It will seem like you’re on top of the world and something will come to knock you down. The unexpected happens layoffs at work, a new baby, a furnace replacement, or car trouble. Any traumatic change or interruption in life can knock you down or throw you for a loop, which can be quite painful and devastating. Sometimes it’s like the end of the world, but hopefully only for a moment. It’s truly not about how far or hard you fall or get knocked down, it’s about how quick and high you bounce back. RESILIENCE is being able to BOUNCE BACK. You’re stopped in your tracks when the unexpected happens. But what is resilience exactly? It’s more than just being tough or strong. It’s about being able to bend without breaking, take punches without falling, adapt to changes, and keep pushing on when things get tough.

To develop resilience, it’s important to have a positive personality. First, have an optimistic outlook to help you see challenges as opportunities for growth versus insurmountable obstacles. Second, maintain a sense of purpose, and direction with goals in your life to provide motivation, and a purpose to move forward, which can help you stay focused and determined. Third, develop perseverance and a “never give up” attitude. You stop at nothing while willing to put in the time and effort to overcome challenges, scale walls, and knockdown obstacles that try to stop you. You draw upon inner strength, pushing through the discomfort and pain to journey onward.

Maintaining resilience requires ongoing effort and practice. Most people tend to give up in defeat at the first obstacle or challenge.

Resilience requires dedication, and attuning to your thoughts, feelings, and reactions to various situations. By practicing mindfulness and selfreflection, you can better understand your coping mechanisms, become more adaptive

to changes, and practice self-compassion and acceptance during crucial times. Watch what words and thoughts you say to yourself as words have power.

Instead of dwelling on mistakes or what went wrong, focus on what you can learn from the situation to help you grow and succeed.

Don’t be hard on yourself and remember that setbacks are temporary, and you can overcome them. They are only permanent if you choose not to get up. Resilience is having rational thoughts and not succumbing to the “woe is me” syndrome. Resilient individuals are resourceful and able to find creative solutions to problems. I approach challenging situations with a willingness to try different strategies and plans until one works.

Years ago, when I went through my divorce, my husband and I were both real estate appraisers. He took all the business clients.

I came up with plans A, B, C, etc. to bounce back. This involved being a substitute teacher, cold calling to get new clients, and taking a long trip to Pennsylvania to appraisal management companies to seek work contracts.

During this time, I developed and maintained resilience through drawing on my faith, belief, and trust in God for inspiration, guidance, and strength. Faith and prayer are powerful during difficult times. They are the cornerstone of resilience. Romans 12:12 says “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” This reminds us to be hopeful in the Lord and steadfast in the face of adversity while trusting that God has better days ahead for us.

Trust in the Lord with unwavering confidence that God is faithful and true to His promises to us. We must believe that He will not leave us nor forsake us, even when circumstances seem bleak and uncertain. How can business owners plan for an exit?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’re a business owner, you always have a lot to do and a lot to think about. But have you put much thought into how you’ll eventually leave it all behind?

Even if you’re a few years away from that day, it’s a good idea to create an exit strategy.

If you’re like most other owners, most of your net worth may well be tied up in your business — so how you exit that business can have a big impact on your finances and your retirement.

As you begin the exit strategy process, you’ll need to examine some basic questions, such as how much you want for your business and how much it’s worth. But you’ll especially need to plan for the mechanics of your exit — that is, just how you’re going to sell or transfer ownership of it.

Essentially, you have three main options: • Internal sale or transfer – You could sell or transfer your business to someone affiliated with the company, such as a family member, business partner or even a group of employees. The advantages of this method are that you’ll have greater control over the timing of your exit, and you’ll be able to provide greater continuity for your employees, clients and suppliers.

One potential disadvantage is that your net sales proceeds may be less than what you’d get from selling the business to an unrelated third party.

• External sale or transfer – The biggest benefit of selling or transferring your business to an unrelated third party is that you can potentially maximize your net sales proceeds. But you’ll need to consider some tradeoffs, too. For one thing, a sale to an outside person or business usually requires a long and possibly expensive due diligence process. Also, you’ll have less control over the timing of your exit than you would if you

sold the business to an internal source.

• Liquidation – If you liquidated your business by selling all your assets and shutting down operations, you could end up with far fewer net proceeds than if you sold the business to an internal or external source.

However, you could raise cash pretty quickly.

But if you chose to liquidate or dissolve your business, it could potentially be disruptive for your employees, clients and suppliers.

Because everyone’s situation is different, there’s no clear-cut formula for deciding which of these exit options is right for you.

And it isn’t simply a matter of numbers, either, because you’ll need to consider some intangible factors, too. How will your family be affected by your choice? How would you feel if your business was in someone else’s hands, or no longer existed? You’ll need to work out these issues, along with the financial ones, before you decide on your business exit strategy.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go it alone.

You may want to consult your financial, legal and tax advisors, and possibly work with a commercial banker and a business evaluation expert. By drawing on several sources of expertise, you can feel more confident that you’ll make a decision that’s appropriate for your needs.

One final suggestion: Don’t wait too long before you begin putting together your exit strategy. Time goes fast — and when the time comes for you to say goodbye to your business, you’ll want to be prepared.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Praise is so underrated.

If you’re a parent, praising your child is critical for their well-being and self esteem. If you’re a teacher, praising your students’ good work is fundamental to their learning process. If you’re a boss, praising your employees’ hard work contributes to a healthy work environment.

Praise is critical in our relationships with other people, so it makes sense that it’s also critical in our relationship with God. A popular Christian method of prayer is the acronym ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication.

It’s no coincidence that the first topic to pray for is adoration — aka praise. When we commit to regularly praising God, we’re committing to regularly thinking about God’s attributes, His work in our lives, and His work in the world.

I know for me it’s often so tempting to skip praising God in my prayers and launch immediately into my list of things I’d like Him to help me with. Those requests are not bad in themselves. But if the only communication we have with God is us asking Him for things, what kind of relationship is that? Can you imagine dating someone who only ever asked you for advice or for money and never told you how much they appreciated you and loved you? That’s a relationship that wouldn’t last very long.

Praising God is a beautiful privilege that you and I have.

Considering God’s holiness, grace, love, kindness, patience, etc. is so beautiful — because this is OUR God we’re talking about. He’s our father.

I challenge you to praise God this week. One strategy I’ve found helpful is to pick an attribute of God (read Exodus 34 verses 6 & 7 if you need inspiration) and focus on that one attribute in your prayers. Another helpful strategy is to use songs to praise God! Praise isn’t always our first instinct, but it’s so important, and a true knowledge of God and Jesus Christ can result in nothing but praise.

Golden Times Senior Group MARCH 14 TH , 2024 “THE DOWNTON ABBEY EXHIBIT”.

The exhibit is an in-depth look at life, culture, fashion and socioeconomics of early 20 th century as depicted on the TV series and films.

There needs to be at least 20/25 people who are interested in immersing themselves into post-Edwardian England to join us. The exhibition is on display at Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center located in Skokie Il . This is a 6 /7 hour day trip. The cost of this trip is $80 and includes transportation and entrance into the exhibit. Additionally, depending on the number of people taking this trip we might be riding on a smaller bus that does not have a bathroom. Unfair Billing of Seniors WOODROW WILCOX On January 23, 2024, I wrote a letter to help a client get two bills corrected. The bills were from a hospital and a doctor associated with it. Both billers frustrated my efforts because they had barriers to anyone who suggested that a bill was incorrect.

Every human system has flaws and people make errors. Honest, responsible parties take responsibility to correct errors. Irresponsible parties ignore problems even if it hurts people – in this case seniors on Medicare.

Our client got bills from your firm. One is under account XXX for $1600 and one is under XXX for $78.04.

I phoned the client’s secondary insurer to learn what happened. On the bill for $1600, the insurer got only your bill and no

Medicare EOB. On the bill for $78.04, the insurance company got nothing.

For each bill, please send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB directly to the secondary insurer at the following address.

I phoned your firm to confirm the correct address to send this letter. You connected me with someone named “Rico” in the Philippines who knew nothing about a correct address for sending this letter. He and your firm outside the US were absolutely no help for me to help our client.

Giannoulias, Preston, Stava-Murray Move to Ban Harmful Food Chemicals Food Additive Ban Would Become Strictest in the Nation In a push to ensure that Illinoisans eat safer, healthier food, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, State Senator Willie Preston (D-Chicago) and State Representative Anne Stava-Murray (D-Downers Grove) have initiated legislation to ban harmful chemicals in candy, soda and other ultra-processed, packaged foods sold here.

The Illinois Food Safety Act – or Senate Bill 2637 – calls for prohibiting the use of brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, Red Dye No. 3 and titanium dioxide – all of which have been linked to serious health problems, including hyperactivity, nervous system damage, reproductive issues, hormonal damage and increased risk of cancer.

Because of health concerns, the use of these chemicals in food items is already prohibited in the European Union and several other countries. Last fall, California enacted a law that banned four of the five additives, which takes effect in 2027, and New York is considering similar legislation.

“Our goal with this legislation is to create a healthier marketplace for Illinois families,” Giannoulias said. “The purpose of this legislation isn’t to ban any products or take food off shelves; it’s to ensure food manufacturers update recipes to use alternative, safer ingredients that are already used in other places around the world, including soon in other parts of the U.S.” “People should be able to trust that the food they buy won’t lead to deadly diseases such as cancer. That’s why I’ve drafted and proposed SB2637 to ban Red Dye #3, Brominated Vegetable Oil, Potassium Bromate, Propylparaben, and Titanium Dioxide,” Preston said. “I want Illinoisans to be more confident when grocery shopping that they are not purchasing products that are laced with ingredients classified as toxic and harmful for human consumption. The European Union and California

have already banned these harmful ingredients. Illinois must take the steps necessary to protect the health and wellness of our citizens.”

“Illinois families should not have to worry that the food they buy for themselves and their kids may contain harmful substances that can cause neurological and reproductive symptoms, or even cancer,” Stava-Murray said. “When new scientific data casts doubt on whether an ingredient or additive is safe to consume, it’s important that that substance be removed from the food supply.”

The advocates emphasized the law is aimed at protecting children, who are more likely to consume food products that contain these chemicals.

Children are also at a greater risk to suffer the negative impacts from food additives because their developing organs are more vulnerable.

As Secretary of State, Giannoulias oversees the state’s organ donation registry and stressed the importance of healthy organs for individuals suffering from life-threatening diseases or injuries who need transplants.

In addition, the Illinois legislation calls on an Illinois-based university or research-focused institution to study the health risks associated with two other additives – butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which would be subject to additional regulations if it is determined they pose a significant health risk.

Additional support for SB 2637: “In keeping with our commitment to reducing the number of people waiting for a lifesaving transplant, we support the Illinois Food Safety Act,” said Kevin Lee, President and CEO of Mid-America Transplant.

“Efforts to make food healthier enhance overall wellbeing and help prevent individuals from needing a transplant later in life. We believe this legislation will promote healthy lifestyles and reduce diseases that can lead to the need for transplant.”

“The Food Safety Act protects the most vulnerable Illinoisans, particularly our children whose organs are still developing,” said Marion L. Shuck, Executive Vice President of Governmental and External Affairs at Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network. “I urge our legislators to approve this proposal, which will keep our communities healthier and less frequently in need of live-saving transplants.”

“The FDA has failed for decades to keep us safe from toxic food chemicals,” said Scott Faber, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit, non-partisan organization that empowers people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. “In the absence of federal regulation, it falls to the states to keep us safe from toxic chemicals in cereals, salad dressings, candy and other foods our families enjoy. We applaud the Secretary and Illinois lawmakers seeking to remove these additives from Illinois’ food supply.”

Sometimes it won’t cover, or can’t be used for, all your expenses.

You’ll receive a letter explaining how you can use your grant within a day or two of receiving payment from FEMA. What can my grant be used for?

FEMA provides financial assistance to eligible individuals and households affected by a disaster who have uninsured or underinsured disaster-related expenses. FEMA assistance is not the same as insurance, nor can it restore all you may have lost in the disaster. Depending on your circumstances, your assistance may be used for: • Home repairs (e.g., structure, water, septic and sewage systems) • Disaster grants intended for home repairs can’t be used for regular living expenses, such as utilities, food, medical or dental bills, travel, entertainment, or any expenses not directly related to the disaster.

• Rental assistance for a different place to live temporarily; • Repair or replacement of a damaged primary vehicle; • Uninsured out-of-pocket medical expenses for an injury caused by the disaster; • Repair or replacement of occupational specialized tools; • Essential educational materials (e.g., computers, schoolbooks, supplies); • Moving and storage expenses related to the

disaster.

Ingredients: • 2 cups whole milk • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • Pinch of salt • Whipped cream (for topping) • Chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish) Instructions: 1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk. Stir occasionally until the mixture is heated but not boiling.

2. Once the milk is warm, add the chocolate chips and continue stirring until they are completely melted and the mixture is smooth.

3. In a small bowl, sift together the cocoa powder and sugar to remove any lumps. Gradually add this mixture to the saucepan, whisking continuously to avoid clumps.

4. Allow the hot chocolate to simmer for a few minutes, ensuring it’s well combined and heated through.

Be careful not to let it boil.

5. Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, stirring well to enhance the flavors.

6. Once everything is well mixed, remove the hot chocolate from the heat and pour it into mugs.

7. Top each mug with a generous dollop of whipped cream and, if desired, sprinkle chocolate shavings on top for an extra touch of indulgence.

A few days later we e-mailed the broker that we would like to make the same offer again. A couple of days later the broker called and said the owner was considering our offer. A few more days passed, we heard nothing from the broker, but we decided to go with the owner’s counter-offer if the seller turned us down again.

The call never came from the broker.

Instead an e-mail was sent saying the owner didn’t accept our original offer and that the home was now under contract. Now we think we should have been given the first chance to accept the owner’s terms instead of it being sold to someone else. The home had been on the market for more than a year so it wasn’t like there was a great demand for it.

What do you think?

Answer: You were given any number of chances to buy the property. First you made

an offer that was not accepted. Then the owners made a counter-offer that you could have instantly accepted -- but did not. Then you re-submitted your original offer and it was not accepted by the sellers. Lastly, you want another chance at the counter-offer you first rejected but by this time the owners had accepted a bid from other purchasers.

The bottom line: You had your chance.

There are many players in the marketplace.

The fact that the home did no quickly sell does not mean the owners are required to sell on your terms. Lastly, an offer or counteroffer once rejected is dead and need not be re-considered.

Dave loved the Lord, and loved his family. Dave was a talented yet humble carpenter, possessing great imagination and wisdom, often dispensed with Enthusiasm and a crooked grin. He loved challenging ideas and norms, and frequently played the devil’s advocate for anyone listening.

His stories became folk legend for his family: wedding crashing, pranks on friends, and more. If you knew Dave in his later years, you would also know that his homegoing was not quite four years late by his reckoning – 84 was “his number”. His family will continue his legacy of a deep faith in Christ, great stories and pithy wisdom. Precious in the sight of the LORD are the death of his saints – Psalm 116:15.
