A retirement-lifestyle of good nutrition, regular exercise, mental stimulation, life long learning, recreation and spirituality is basic to a long and happy life. Just as important is the development of a retirementlifestyle with great intergenerational social relationships. Church groups and service clubs are great ways to develop relationships with multiple generations and different circles of people. They also provide a way to provide service to your community and give meaning to your retirement-lifestyle. On the other hand, leading a sedentary and otherwise unhealthy lifestyle will not result in a long and healthy retirement. If we believe that extending our lives for an extra twenty years means no more than giving up wellness in exchange for an extra two decades of painful inactivity, chances are we would choose fewer years. As a society, we need to realize that good health and vitality up to and past the age of 100 is possible for us. We know that it is possible for other people because we hear about them all the time. Currently there are more than 50,000 centenarians in the United States. For a happy retirement our lifestyle should ideally provide a balance of relaxation, fun, recreation, service to others and stimulating work. Being able to retire debt free would greatly enhance our ability to enjoy a truly free retirement. We can be embarking on a new and vital phase of life filled with opportunities, great hobbies, expanded interests, new careers, travel, volunteer opportunities, new social relationships and leisure pursuits. This is the time of our lives where what we do can make a difference to us and our community. If you want to give back to your community, check out the local services clubs such as Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions. Each individual club has projects or charities that they support. Pick one that interests you and get involved. Managing stress is very important in maintaining optimal health. You can’t eliminate all the stressors in your life and probably wouldn’t want to if you could. The secret of stress management is not eliminating them but changing the way that you react to them. Spiritual Wellness, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor are great help in managing stress. Proper nutrition and aerobic exercise also help relieve the effect of stress. You can slow or even stop the aging process and enjoy additional years of active, vital life far beyond your 60th or 80th birthday. But you have to believe you can. Your positive attitude and thoughts, spiritual power, and motivation have a lot to do with your health. Your mind and faith have amazing power over your body. You are the one who will determine, to a great extent, how long you will live and what the quality of that life will be. Today is the day to start. The Dorchester Senior Center is available to help with any questions regarding senior living and retirement. We invite you to call us at (708) 841-5560 for any assistance your family may need. Illinois Law Now!

Question: Can my prospective employer legally have access to my credit history? Answer: Under the Illinois Employee Credit Privacy Act, employers are significantly limited in their ability to obtain credit history information for applicants and current employees, except in certain circumstances. The only employers with a clear-cut exemption from the law are law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, debt collectors, and insurance and surety businesses. The law does permit credit history inquiries by other types of employers if they are related to a “bona fide occupational requirement” of a particular position or group of employees. For more information about Illinois law, visit www. illinoislawyerfinder.com. If you have a legal question, send it to illinoislawcolumn@isba.org.
