Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ CALUMET AREA INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION AHEAD OF THE CURVE: The guest speaker at the June 21st, 2013 Breakfast meeting for CAIC, the premier industrial/ manufacturing organization dynamically led by former Calumet City resident Ted Stalnos, was none other than our Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, who is also running for Governor in 2014. Rutherford brought along a chart which underlined his contention that the State is being run into the ground by inept, self serving career politicians, something he himself disavowed should he win next year. “I don’t believe that these (elected) jobs are for life,” he noted. “I plan to fix what is wrong with the State, and move on.” Some of what Rutherford, who is from downstate Pontiac, had on his chart of Illinois ‘wrongs’ include: As of January 6, 2011, the state had 8.5 Billion in unpaid bills. As of January 14, 2011, the State had to borrow $4.1 Billion to make pension payments and by June 2011, only 43% of State pensions were covered. Fast forward to January 1, 2013, the State’s unpaid bills now amount to $9 Billion and Fitch and Moody’s are downgrading everything they can and the State’s credit rating is in the toilet. “Is that any way to run a government?” Rutherford asks rhetorically to the dismay of those present. A table mate of this reporter blurted out after Rutherford finished his talk,”Finally, a politician I can trust who speaks the truth!” As State Treasurer, Rutherford is taking a huge chance by running for Governor. If he loses the race, he is also loses his job as Treasurer; but never count the resourceful Rutherford out. He kept his job with Service Master (Terminex, Tru Green) after he won his Illinois House seat in 1993, and as an unmarried, childless, debt free resident of Illinois, he should do all right. And, without even student debt to his name, he would definitely pass finance guru Suze Orman’s ‘can I afford it’ test as to running for Governor. The answer to that question came about at the June Membership meeting of the Calumet City Chamber, the multi lettered Alexandra Glumac (MS, NCC, CPC, RDDP) who after a highly successful career in counseling, now teaches at South Suburban College. A gifted speaker, Ms. Glumac had the gathering entranced as she took us through our paces determining just what Emotional Intelligence (“the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions...and to use this to guide one’s thinking and actions,” Salovey & Mayer, 1990 and “Managing feelings so that they are expressed appropriately and effectively enabling people to work together smoothly toward their common goals.” Daniel Goleman. Ms,. Glumac gave the group hand outs to assess our own EI and while she guided and instructed us, peppered her comments with cheers for the Blackhawks and noted that her brother Marco Glumac was a member of the Calumet City Police Department. A topic like Emotional Intelligence can be a boring concept, but in Glumac’s stylish presentation, it was fascinating. The college is lucky to have her. We all wanted to book a private session with her. Maybe next time!

On Monday and Thursday with lots of rain in between, the cyclone like wind gusts downed trees all over Northwest Indiana and parts of the south suburbs. My Coldwell Banker colleague Mike Smitley, who lives next door to his mother off White Oak in Munster had his hands full with the trees and power outages from both homes that took all week to fix. In between storms he tried to keep some semblance of normalcy for his Mom, (and his wife and new golden lab puppy) who is an active senior, but “this was something else again,” noted a tired Mike who had been up feeding the generator gas every two hours. The real danger of trees falling all around him, was something he never wants to experience again. The storms seemed to shift toward NW Indiana after pounding the northside of Chicago and flooding basements there. What a mess.
