Illinois Law Now!
Question: Under what circumstances should I consider revoking my will? Answer: There are several situations where revoking a will may be advisable. For instance, life changes – such as marriage, divorce and a new baby – may change how you wish to dispose of your property upon death. While the reasons for changing a will may vary, it is important to know how to reflect your current intentions in your will. In most states, revoking a will is fairly straightforward. Generally, you destroy the old will or make changes to an existing one, or create a new will, making sure that it is properly executed.

Question: We plan to use a professional mover to transport our belongings to our new home. How can we be sure that if something is lost or broken, it will be replaced? Answer: For most people, some items, like jewelry, computers, and family treasures, are irreplaceable and should be personally moved to your new home. For the rest of your belongings, hire a reputable moving company, preferably one that is certified by the American Moving and Storage Association. Get a cost estimate up front, don’t fall for the cheapest price, and get everything in writing. Meet with the movers, and check out their trucks to see if they’re clean and clearly marked. Make sure the moving company has insurance and that they use a third-party arbitration service to settle any disputes that may arise. “I have loved life in all its seasons...,” says 97-yearold Clara Smith Reber who has written hundreds of poems over the years. That love for life is brightly reflected in her constant smile, in her youthful laugh, and in the way she greets a stranger. In her advanced age, her body may be frail and her memory may be fading, but one thing endures - her passion for writing is a breath of fresh air. Here is her poem titled ‘Freedom’. Pine-scented, or salty like the sea; Freedom is a field new plowed… Furrows of democracy!
Freedom is a forest, Trees tall and straight as men! Freedom is a printing press… The power of the pen! Freedom is a country church, A cathedral’s stately spire; Freedom is a spirit That can set the soul on fire! Freedom is man’s birthright, A sacred, living rampart; A pulsebeat of humanity… The throb of a nation’s heart! – Clara Smith Reber Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of poets.
