PREVIEW Teaching kids to use technology safely is a must. WORDS Lisa Harrison Hi-tech mobile devices are not just for grown-ups, with smartphones e-readers, handheld games, tablet computers and learning devices now a big part of our children’s lives too. A recent study from Nielsen found 70 per cent of children aged 12 and under who live in tablet-
owning households use the devices, and it suggests parents give their children tablets to occupy them while travelling and waiting in restaurants. sharing photos. Does it have any parental controls? Without guidance, children can over share, say things they don’t mean or send inappropriate images. 2. Establish time limits on duration of use. 3. Try to teach your children responsible use. Knowing what a device can do and how to manage it, is essential when it comes to helping your children use new technology.
