t’s the stuff of nightmares – you wave your husband off to work, kiss your children goodbye at the school gate or walk away from a visit with your ageing grandfather, and then never see that person again. The thought of a loved-one going missing is for many our worst fear. And while most missing people are reunited with family quickly, every year a few families are left waiting weeks, months and years for an answer. Some will never know; their friend or relative is never found. It must be unbearable. Right now there are too many Sunshine Coast families who are living the nightmare. This week on page 6 Nathan Evans takes a look at missing persons cases with a Sunshine Coast connection, and while it doesn’t make for light reading, it is such an important topic that we feel it necessary to

] cover it. Sunshine Coast police are currently investigating more than 10 unsolved missing persons cases. That is 10 too many, if you ask me, so if anyone has any information we urge you to contact police. On a very different note, over in our agenda this week we have a fascinating story about how global food brands are continuing the push for world domination by tweaking their tried and true recipes. That’s on page 22. Our property cover story, on page 42, showcases a few of the Coast’s more affordable properties for sale. A TRACE PREVIEW While 95 per cent of people reported missing are located quickly, a small number are never found. So, what happens to them? It’s the task of the Missing Persons Unit to find out, but often the mystery remains unsolved. WORDS Nathan Evans

n March 25, 2003 Sydney tourist Trevor Mountford Smith checked in to Caloundra’s Worldmark Resort. He failed to check out as planned on March 28 and cleaners found his luggage, wallet, camera and airline tickets still in his room on March 29. He hasn’t been seen since. Every day in Queensland, the state’s Missing Persons Unit officers investigate an average of 30 to 40 disappearances. In most cases, says Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Ziser who heads up the unit as well as the Homicide Investigation Unit, these cases are solved, often with positive outcomes, within 48 hours. They’re often people who forgot to advise loved ones of holiday plans, kids who made detours on the way home from school without telling their parents, or relatives who stormed off after a heated argument. Then there are the cases like that of Mountford Smith which baffle police for weeks, even years. These are

people who vanished without a trace – left home and never came back, took a holiday but never arrived, or went for a walk and were never seen again. Police piece together theories with the information they have as to what may have happened to each missing person. These scenarios and other leads are followed up and either ruled out, or kept open as lines of inquiry. In Mountford Smith’s case, police believe he is deceased, possibly drowned. “We know he suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome. One possible theory is that he may have gone for a swim, become tired and likely drowned,” says Ziser. His is one of more than 10 cases still unsolved across the Sunshine Coast and surrounds, dating back as far as the 1980s. Stuart Raymond Gatehouse, then 45, from Tasmania, was last seen at Kenilworth in 2004 driving his 1986 Holden Commodore, apparently heading to Mackay to visit his brother. He never arrived. “His red Commodore was never found,” says Ziser. “That matter is currently before the coroner. We always keep an open mind, but there was no evidence of anything suspicious and we have no theories.” Kerry Engwirda was last seen by her daughter at Peregian Beach Caravan Park in December, 1999. Police believe she may have travelled to NSW, but they’ve not been able to confirm it. Michael Bonavia, last seen in Caloundra, vanished in August 2003. Jason Paul Hazelgrove, from Gympie, told his family he would talk to them later in the day back in July, 2010, but instead he vanished, leaving his family,

Ziser, a seasoned officer, says people go missing for a range of reasons, including as a result of foul play, sometimes because of medical conditions such as dementia, and in some cases, intentionally. “We might have a day with 30 people missing in the state and the majority of those people turn up in the first 48 hours; the others trickle through over the next few days. For whatever reason, they do not always have happy endings,” he says. “As a general rule, the first 48 hours are the most crucial, whether it be a missing persons case or suspected homicide. lace a frying pan on the stove on high heat with an egg nearby. Position yourself at the kitchen window, legs spread shoulder-width apart, weight distributed evenly. Stare out the window and contemplate launching the tinny Saturday. At the sound of a female voice calling “what’s that burning?” spin in a fluid motion, grasp the egg and break it into the pan. Take an egg flip from the draw. Put on the bread to toast and turn back to where you thought you put the egg flip – the toast on, and egg flip search are all single-hand moves, while the eggshell remains in the other hand. Completing three 360-degree turns and tea towel lifts

PREVIEW Part 1: Exercising while cooking looking for the egg flip, get another one from the drawer – this move is accompanied by a rapid side and down action as you discard the eggshell in the kitchen tidy. The now-overcooked egg requires you to turn rapidly to the stove, pick up the pan, doing 90-degree head turns left and right to locate the now-missing second egg flip. With the toast now burning, lift the slice out using alternate wrist shakes and finger sucks due to the heat. Complete a half-turn to the left or right – depending on kitchen feng shui – and place the toast where the plate should be. Whilst either bending or stretching to retrieve a plate, one of the two missing egg flips should enter your peripheral vision. Memorise its position. Plate now set, make large lateral sliding steps between the fridge – for the butter – and the toast. With the butter knife still in the drawer,

perform a 270-degree dig and twist wrist action to retrieve a portion of butter from its container using the just-discovered egg flip. Whilst doing this, rise up on your toes and attempt a ‘hip to handle’ bump to get the pan off the heat. With now too much butter on one piece of cold toast and none on the other, make a double-hand rapid open-draw extraction of a knife. To unfasten the now-burning egg from the pan will require a vigorous back and forth motion of the pan accompanied by between egg and pan knife action with further head twists looking, yet again, for the chameleonrelated egg flip. The sitting down and getting up again to get cutlery and make a coffee is usually accompanied by a verbal female cadence, “I hope you’re going to clean all this up.” I will detail in part 17.

Coast businesses need CCTV: Police Police have called on Coast business owners to step up security by installing high-quality CCTV in the wake of a spate of armed robberies. There have been more than 19 robberies on the Coast this year. Acting Detective Inspector Darren Edwards says police and businesses must work together to reduce the risk. “Offences such as these can be quite distressing for business owners and staff and have a significant impact on their health, safety and general wellbeing,” he says. “We have our District Crime Prevention Unit officers working closely with the Criminal Investigation Branch to ensure our concerns are being

communicated to the business community, particularly in relation to the training of staff.” Police say installing duress alarms, security barriers, security lights, height markers and signs asking customers to remove hoods and helmets are among the steps business owners should consider taking.

Sewage spill closes creek to swimmers A sewage spill kept swimmers out of the water at Tucker’s Creek in Mooloolaba last week. Unitywater has confirmed a cracked sewage rising main caused the leak on Wednesday, with sewage seeping into the canal early in the morning. “This was reported to Unitywater at 7.05am by a council worker who was working on the Tucker’s Creek bridge duplication project,” a Unitywater spokeswoman says. The spokeswoman says water tests taken last week showed the leak had “no discernible impact on Tucker’s Creek”, but Unitywater placed warning signs at the creek to reduce any potential risk to the public while final tests were carried out. The signs were removed on Friday. “The exact cause of the cracking of the rising main is difficult to determine, but is likely to have been as a result of recent rain and ground movement associated with the bridgework,” the spokeswoman says.

reg Withers, husband of former Queensland premier Anna Bligh, has resigned from the public service. Withers was the head of Queensland’s Office of Climate Change. The Liberal National Party (LNP) scrapped the office on winning government, and put Withers in charge of winding back the programs he had led. A government spokesperson says Withers tendered his resignation to the director-general, and June 1 was his final day. “There was no pressure from the government to resign,” the spokeswoman says. “The decision was a personal one.” About 30 members from the Office of Climate Change have been offered voluntary redundancies. More cameras for NSW roads The number of mobile speed and red light cameras across NSW will be drastically increased, but there will be more warning signs for drivers. NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay says the number of mobile speed cameras will increase from six to 45 vehicles, and the number of red light cameras from 91 to 200 locations. Point-to-point cameras will also patrol 24 stretches of road, up from 21. However, fixed speed cameras would be cut from 172 to 139. As part of the strategy, the money raised from speed and other cameras

will be put into a new Community Road Safety Fund, rather than into consolidated revenue. Gay says signs warning motorists of the cameras would increase in number and in size, to stop the ‘entrapment’ of unsuspecting drivers. AAP

LOUD BANGS TO SCARE OFF SYDNEY’S BATS

Loud industrial noise and banging sounds will be played twice a day at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens to scare off a destructive colony of 5000 flying foxes. The first computerised recordings were played on loud speakers at 5.30pm (AEST) Monday in central areas of the garden, including Palm Grove. The noises will be played for 45 minutes before dawn and 30 minutes at sunset until the grey-headed flying fox colony finds

a new home. The garden has permission to play the noises twice a day until July. It’s hoped the bats will join existing permanent colonies at Parramatta, Centennial Park, Gordon, Wolli Creek, Clyde, Cabramatta, Avalon, Macquarie Fields and Kareela Park. The bats have already destroyed 28 trees and 30 palms and damaged a further 300 trees, with 60 of these on the critical list. “The relocation plan is designed to protect the welfare of the animals and halt the damage being done to the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney,” says Royal Botanic Garden director Mark Savio. The relocation is expected to take several weeks, and 100 bats have been fitted with satellite collars to track their movement. Flying fox numbers at the Botanic Gardens peaked at 22,000 in 2010. Nominations open for Katter’s federal bid Katter’s Australian Party says a report that shows it came within a whisker of being voted Queensland’s official opposition has raised its hopes for federal success. Federal leader Bob Katter on Monday called for Queensland nominations for the next federal election. He says the eight-month-old party is considering launching in three other states. The party’s Queensland director, Aidan McLindon, says a report into the March state election, released on Monday, shows the party could be a force to contend with at federal level. He says the party had needed 6000 votes or fewer to win four more north Queensland seats, or a total of six, in the election. AAP

oogle has agreed to buy the online messaging firm Meebo, a move expanding the internet giant’s capabilities for instant sharing of web pages using social networks. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. North Korea threatens to attack South Korea North Korea has threatened to blow up the Seoul offices of South Korean media outlets following critical coverage of a children’s event in Pyongyang. The military says missile units and other forces had fixed the longitude and latitude co-ordinates for several offices in central Seoul. The statement on Monday named the Chosun Ilbo and JoongAng Ilbo newspapers, a TV channel operated by Dong-A Ilbo newspaper, and the KBS, CBS, MBC and SBS television stations. Firefighters called to World Trade Centre Firefighters have rushed to the 89th floor of One World Trade Center to help construction workers put out a fire in some wooden decking. The fire was a small one and never progressed to the point where it posed a threat to life or property, but its location on the site of the September 11 attacks made it anything but routine. Workers at the unfinished tower

used fire extinguishers to put out the burning plywood, but firefighters were still on the scene wetting down the area an hour later. There were no serious injuries or structural damage. The skyscraper is already more than 360 metres high. President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the tower on June 14 to get a briefing on construction. AP

When 11-year-old Tyler Sullivan goes to school on Monday, he’ll have the ultimate excuse note for missing class one day last week – written and signed by US President Barack Obama.

Sullivan skipped school on Friday to see Obama in action during a visit to a Honeywell factory in Golden Valley, Minnesota. When the president finished his speech, the schoolboy took advantage of a chance to meet him. “I was sitting in the front row,” Sullivan told local television station KARE. “I was pretty excited. “I had a chance to shake his hand,” the boy said, adding that the president asked him about missing class. Obama then took out an official presidential notepad and jotted down the following, sealed with his signature: “Mr Ackerman – P lease excuse Tyler, he was with me! NZ woman wins appeal over smacking A woman who admitted hitting her eight-year-old son has had her assault conviction quashed by New Zealand’s court of appeal. Lobby group Family First, a critic of anti-smacking laws, says the case is an example of good parents being criminalised. The woman and her partner admitted they had smacked the child. They were convicted in the district court and sentenced to community work. The partner was subsequently cleared on appeal to the high court. The woman has already served her sentence and lost her job, and the appeal judges said they had sympathy for her. She had sought expert help to deal with her child’s behavioural difficulties and had tried various non-physical measures. The judges said the penalty imposed by the lower court was out of proportion. Promising new treatments for melanoma

Two new experimental treatments against advanced melanoma have shown promise, according to research presented in the US. The agents, known as Dabrafenib and Trametinib, are being developed by the British pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline, and were tested in clinical trials against standard chemotherapy treatments. The trial on Trametinib included 322 people, of whom 214 took the

experimental drug while the rest did standard chemotherapy. More than 22 per cent of those on Trametinib responded to treatment, compared with eight per cent in the chemo group. The Trametinib group experienced a median 4.8-month period in which the cancer did not advance, and their risk of dying from skin cancer diminished by 46 per cent compared to the chemo group. AFP

Food manufacturers are well aware of cross-cultural taste preferences and are adapting their top-selling recipes accordingly. Pickled cucumber chips anyone?

ussians prefer their Lay’s potato chips dusted in caviar and crab flavours. The Chinese like their Oreos stuffed with mango and orange cream. And in Spain, Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal is served floating in hot coffee instead of cold milk. US brand names have invaded supermarket shelves across Australia. But we are not the only nation on the US marketers’ hit lists – it’s part of a worldwide trend that has American recipes tweaked to suit local tastes. Food makers have long tinkered with their products to appeal to regional tastes, but getting the recipe just right is more important than ever. That’s partly because people in developing nations such as China and India are gaining an appetite for American-style ‘on-thego’ foods as they work longer hours and have less time to cook. But it’s mostly because snack makers increasingly are looking for growth in other parts of the world as sales slow. Growth in the snack food industry has been virtually flat in the US for the past two years, reports market research firm Euromonitor. Meanwhile, combined sales in China, Brazil and Russia – three major developing markets – rose 15 per cent in 2010 and 11 per cent last year to $US17 billion ($16.8 billion). That’s half the size of the US market but it’s growing. The challenge for snack makers is that people in other countries have different tastes.

Consider the Oreo, which Kraft Food introduced in China in 1996. Sales of the cream-filled chocolate biscuit were respectable there, but the Chinese didn’t love it. So Kraft tweaked the Oreo. But executives of the company knew they had to proceed with caution. “When you have a brand that’s 100 years old, you don’t mess with the recipe thoughtlessly,” says Lorna Davis, head of the company’s global biscuit and cookies business. In 2006, Kraft began offering the Oreo as a wafer, which was popular in Asia. It is made up of cream sandwiched between crispy wafers. The plan was to help familiarise more Chinese customers with the brand. Three years later, the company decided to go a step further. It worked with a panel of consumer taste experts from around the world to identify the characteristics of the Oreo – including colour, crunchiness and bitterness – that were likely to appeal to Chinese tastes. The Top 8 at a Glance that the Chinese don’t like their treats as big or as sweet as Americans do. So the company rejigged the recipe to create a biscuit that was a tad smaller and a touch less sweet. It was a hit among Chinese consumers. Kraft later added a green tea ice-cream flavour. The biscuit combined a popular local flavour with the cooling imagery of ice cream. The green tea version sold well, and a year later, the company rolled out Oreos in flavours that are popular in Asians desserts – raspberry and blueberry, and mango and orange. The result? Over the past five years, Kraft says sales have grown an average of 60 per cent a year. The Oreo now is the top-selling biscuit in China with a market share of 13 per cent. Kraft, which operates in more than 80 countries, is taking a similar approach with other snacks. In Saudi Arabia, Kraft offers its Tang powder drink in a lemonpepper flavour. In Mexico, it comes in tropical fruit flavours like tamarind and mandarin, and a hibiscus version fashioned after the flower. Sales have nearly doubled to $US1 billion worldwide since Kraft rolled out the localised versions in 2006. Kellogg, the world’s largest cereal maker, has also intensified its focus on catering to local tastes as it attempts to grow its snack business overseas. Last year, the company’s revenue in Latin America topped $US1 billion for the first time. The company sells products in more than 180 countries and it is learning that on-the-ground insights can pay off. In Europe, for instance, Kellogg for years had marketed its cereals there just as it did in the US. But it failed to take into account that many in the region don’t drink cold milk in the morning. Now,

a tourist travelling in Spain might find it surreal to see TV ads showing All-Bran cereal floating in a steaming cup of coffee. A similar story played out for PepsiCo. For the first time last year, revenue from the company’s international food division surpassed US revenue. To achieve that, Pepsi has had to adjust its recipes. In 2005, Pepsi’s food division began a quest to make its Lay’s potato chips more appealing to local tastes in Russia. It wasn’t easy. Russians still like packaged versions of a Soviet-era snack – stale bread slathered in oil and baked to a crisp. “Potato chips were not big in the Communist time, so it’s something we’re gradually building,” says Marc Schroeder, who heads Pepsi’s food division in Russia. To get a sense of what Russians like, employees travelled around the country to visit people in their homes and talk about what they eat day-today. That was a big task. Russia has nine time zones and spans 11,265 kilometres, with eating habits that vary by region. In the eastern part of the country, Pepsi found that fish is a big part of the diet. So it introduced crab chips in 2006. It’s now the third most popular flavour in the country. A red caviar flavour does best in Moscow, where caviar is particularly popular. Pickled cucumber, which piggybacks off a traditional appetiser throughout Russia, was introduced last year and is already the fourth most popular flavour. Other favourites include onion, bacon, and sour cream and herbs, which is a bit sweeter than the American version. The chip translations are paying off as sales of Lay’s have more than doubled in the past five years. AAP

PepsiCo – Another US multinational corporation, Pepsi also owns Lay’s and many other potato chip brands, biscuit brands and Gatorade. Nestlé – The world’s most mispronounced company name, Switzerland’s Nestlé has more than 8000 brands from baby food to pet food, breakfast cereal to bottled water and of course chocolate and coffee. Kraft Foods – The US conglomerate markets many brands in more than 170 countries. Brands include Cadbury, Philadelphia, Trident and Aussie favourites Vegemite and Twisties. Diageo – This British multinational alcoholic beverages group owns brands such as Johnnie Walker, Baileys and Guinness. Anheuser-Busch InBev – The world’s largest brewer, this Belgium-based company owns Budweiser, Beck’s and Stella Artois.

e all know the statistics – Greece is less than three per cent of the euro zone economy, but the issues in Europe now relate to contagion. Post the recent Greek election, which resulted in no one party holding a ruling majority, and with politicians failing to form a national government, the Greeks go back to the ballot box on June 17. In the meantime, what we have is ‘uncertainty’, which is never received well by investors. This uncertainty manifests itself in a series of unanswered questions and speculation in the following ways: • In relation to the next election,

which political party is likely to win, pro-Euro, pro-austerity – are we likely to see a renegotiation of the austerity measures? • Will the ECB provide funds sufficient for Greece to pay its creditors – due June 2012? • Will the members of the European Union offer the olive branch and ensure Greece maintains its place in the tent? These matters are serious and resolution is required. At present, the larger Euro members wish for Greece to remain a part of the union and I understand that up to 80 per cent of Greeks wish to remain members also. Some pundits are calling for Greece to be let go, which is being looked at in one of two ways – orderly or otherwise – and either solution is expensive. I have read that a messy exit could cost up to $US1 trillion, with many lenders losing capital, even the International Monetary Fund (which claims to

have never made a loss on a loan). The other (more serious) concern is contagion risk, which relates to the remaining Euro members. What happens to those countries that are not meeting their austerity measures? Do they too risk leaving the Euro? What of their banking systems? Will depositors pull their money to avoid a severe devaluation? So, what is the most likely outcome? If Greece can keep itself together until the next election, I believe it will remain part of the Monetary Union and they will renegotiate the austerity measures. Surprisingly, Greece would run a budget surplus but for the interest expense on its outstanding loans – so maybe a further forgiveness of debt could be in order also? Mayor Mark Jamieson and Sunshine Coast councillors met with Local Government Minister David Crisafulli in Nambour last week to discuss important upcoming projects for the Coast. The catch-up followed meetings between the mayor and the region’s state members of parliament, and Jamieson reports there is goodwill between the elected representatives. “We are all determined to work together to get the best results for the region so it can reach its potential,� the mayor says. “We covered a whole range of issues about the future of the region and I think all concerned would agree they were very productive discussions. “I want to work in partnership with the State Government and promote the Sunshine Coast as a key location for public and private investment. This will create long-term opportunities for the community and economy,� he says. The mayor cited the Kawana

health hub, the region’s airport and plans to turn Maroochydore into the Coast’s principal activity centre, as key areas that will be the focus of his council. “A good relationship between all levels of government is needed to deliver [these] big three projects in the coming years,� he says. “Council also needs co-operation from its state and federal counterparts to deliver on its vision to become Australia’s most sustainable region.�

BlueScope in tax office tussle BlueScope Steel has found itself in a stoush with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and could be hit with a bill of up to $140 million. The ATO intends to issue the company with amended assessments for the 2007 and 2008 tax years in relation to a sale and leaseback of equipment deal which allowed BlueScope to raise $270 million. The new assessments relate to the gain BlueScope made on the sale of the equipment and the ATO’s denial of the deduction for lease rentals paid to the new owner of the equipment. BlueScope intends to dispute the ATO’s new assessments. If the company is unsuccessful, it faces a maximum liability of $140 million, or $51 million to $63 million. The $140 million relates to the gain BlueScope made on the deal, while the other amount is linked to a deduction for lease rentals. A BlueScope spokesman says the amounts were mutually exclusive, meaning that if the company lost the dispute with the ATO it would have to pay one amount or the other.

If you have a family trust and haven’t already heard about recent changes to ATO requirements in relation to discretionary trusts, now would be a very good time to talk to your accountant or lawyer. Although we all know the financial year ends on June 30, traditionally the ATO allowed trustees two months’ grace after the end of the financial year to finalise financial statements and record trust distributions. Income Tax Rulings IT328 and 329 extending this period of grace have been withdrawn, and the ATO now requires that all trust distributions are recorded

in writing before June 30. This change, coupled with the changes in interpretation of tax law arising out of the High Court’s decision in the Bamford case in 2010 means it is very important that you: • discuss with your accountant or solicitor whether your trust deed needs to be amended in light of the Bamford decision and new trust streaming legislation to permit maximum flexibility in distribution of income, capital gains, etc. • carefully consider what distributions are to be made, of income and capital gains, and the wording of the resolutions making those distributions (which are almost certain to have changed from the wording used before the Bamford decision) before June 30. This is important, and it won’t wait until you deliver your 2011-12 figures to your accountant later in the year to prepare your tax return. Committee to monitor EMAs A caucus decision to set up a sub-committee to monitor the progress of enterprise migration agreements (EMAs) in the resources sector is unlikely to delay projects, federal defence minister Stephen Smith says. The sub-committee was set up after immigration minister Chris Bowen announced Australia’s first enterprise migration agreement (EMA), which allows Gina Rinehart’s $6.5 billion Roy Hill project in WA’s Pilbara region to hire workers from overseas. The Opposition says the process could cause unnecessary project delays. But Defence Minister Stephen Smith does not believe that will happen. “I don’t think so,” he told ABC Television’s Insiders program on Sunday. He maintained overseas workers would be hired only after every attempt to source local workers had been exhausted. “There will be some big minerals resources or petroleum resources projects where the skill set is simply not available in Australia,” he says. How low can they go? Rates cut to pre-GFC level Tuesday’s decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to cut the cash rate by 25 basis points brings it to its lowest level – 3.50 per cent – since November 2009. RBA governor Glenn Stevens said in a statement, “Growth in the world economy picked up in the early months of 2012, having slowed in the second half of 2011. But more recent indicators suggest further weakening in Europe and some further moderation in growth in China.” He also noted unclear conditions in parts of Asia and the US’s moderate growth.

“The Board has noted previously that Europe would remain a potential source of adverse shocks ... Long-term interest rates faced by highly rated sovereigns, including Australia, have fallen to exceptionally low levels. These digital devices are not just great for entertainment, they also offer location-based services enabling parents and children to know each other’s whereabouts, and invaluable educational potential. But some of these new technologies come with features that our children are not ready to deal with, like the ability to access the Internet, video chatting, and social networking. The bottom line is, while the devices come with manuals on basic functionality, we are not given instructions on how to appropriately manage how our children use these technologies. MOOLOOLABA’S FUNKY LITTLE SHACK PREVIEW Travis Schultz is managing partner of Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers and a lover of fine food and wine.

I

f you see a faded sign by the side of the road that says ‘15 miles to the love shack’, you might not be at the B52’s ‘funky little shack’, but it will certainly feel like it if you’re a patron of Lot 104 Espresso & Wine Bar. Situated on the Mooloolaba Esplanade, Lot 104 is a product of the creative flair of designer Mark Gacesa, and the hospitality ingenuity of its founder Clayton Williams. With its bare tables and paper serviettes, the venue doesn’t pretend to be fine dining but rather a chic – if not trendy – meeting place, no matter the time of day. At night, Lot 104 finds its groove with clever lighting (including under the bar) accentuating the woven sandstone tiles that adorn the walls, while the neutral colours add warmth to the interior. An elegant row of seven Indonesian-style lights add character to the inside dining area while outdoors, the alfresco diners benefit from the activity of the Esplanade and the talents of a lone saxophonist. It’s more about the vibe at Lot 104, and although the menu is not extensive, the food is pretty good. When we recently took the old duck there for her 66th birthday, we shared entrees that included marinated pan-fried lamb balls with caramelised onion, tzatziki, spinach and sourdough bread (and a white sauce), slow

It’s more about the vibe at Lot 104, and although the menu is not extensive, the food is pretty good oven-roasted pork belly on an Asian-style salad, and vegetarian spring rolls with sweet chilli, lemon and coriander dipping sauce. Had we known how generous the portions would be, I doubt that we’d have bothered with mains! For me, the garlic-infused Mooloolaba green king prawns with avocado, spinach, rocket, sugar snow peas, cherry tomato, coriander and lime were filling, but could have been spiced up a little. The barbecued prawns wore the zebra-style striped uniform of a hotplate imprint, but the salad

could perhaps have used a little more zing from a well-lubricated coriander and lime dressing. It was a touch surprising that unshelled prawns would be served without a finger bowl. But with such attentive (and enthusiastic) waitstaff, coupled with the pulse of an Esplanade location, Lot 104 is a ‘funky old shack, and I gotta get back!’. China’s rapid emergence as a major international wine market has sparked intense debate among growers about how best to pair their wines with the country’s rich array of culinary delights. Drawn by the prospect of vast, relatively untapped pools of new Chinese consumers, wine growers from around the world are competing to claim their products go best with the Asian giant’s unique dishes. Food pairing is essential to the enjoyment of wine and, from a purely business point of view, to the industry’s mission to encourage the Chinese to drink it. But even the best sommeliers are vexed by the pairing of wine with Chinese dishes. While French appellations clearly dominate the market for high-end imported wine in China, countries such as Australia, Chile and South Africa are important players in the mid-range and entry levels. Georges Haushalter, president of the Bordeaux Wine Council, has a complicated theory about Chinese food and acidity in wine. e’re only just beginning to recognise the impact a ‘sick workforce’ can have on Australian employers and employees. A study published by Fitness Australia in 2010 shows that sick leave has been costing Australian businesses $2.56 billion a year and that, on average, 2.7 per cent of the Australian workforce is absent on unapproved leave every day. The cost

of absenteeism in Australia has risen by more than 25 per cent since 2000, and 85 per cent of businesses are experiencing an increase in sick leave. Absenteeism is preventable; seven out of 10 absentee health-related issues can be made less likely with better lifestyle patterns exercise. Research shows that corporate wellness programs reduce absenteeism and injuries in the workplace. For every $1 spent on a corporate wellness program, there is an estimated saving of up to $10 in the areas of decreased absenteeism, fewer sick days, reduced WorkCover claims and improvement to employee performance and productivity. Wellness programs can also alleviate depression and improve employees’ time management and stress levels. A healthy workplace contributes to team morale and attracts and retains key employees. SWEET MEDICINE Eating about 100 grams of dark chocolate daily could help prevent heart problems in high risk people, Melbourne researchers say. Dark chocolate is rich in components called polyphenols, especially flavonoids, which can have anti-inflammatory and blood pressure lowering effects. Melbourne researchers surveyed data on 2000 people at risk of developing heart disease and estimated the benefits to their health of eating 100 grams of dark chocolate a day after a decade. Using a best-case scenario of 100 per cent compliance, the researchers showed that daily dark chocolate consumption could avert about 85 fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular

events, such as heart attacks and strokes, per 10,000 people treated over 10 years. It also showed that spending $40 per person a year on prevention strategies using dark chocolate would be cost-effective. Although the reduction in heart problems in the population was less than one per cent, Monash University researcher, Professor Chris Reid, says the strategy could save money considering the cost of heart attack and stroke on the community. “Because of the high cost of treating those diseases, the potential savings of those number of fatal and non-fatal events, actually make this quite a cost-effective strategy,” Reid says. hen did our tradies become so posh? Once upon a time, there was nothing more basic and more spartan than your typical tradies’ ute. Not so with today’s ute. The all-new Ford Ranger has raised the bar, in terms of size, space and style, and Ford claims it is the first ‘pickup’ to attain a 5-Star Euro NCAP safety rating. The Ranger is offered with a choice of one petrol and two diesel engines, and three cab styles. We drove the higher-spec XLT with the larger of the two turbo-diesel engine choices, the DuraTorq 3.2. It uses an unconventional five-cylinder configuration of 3.2-litres capacity, which produces a surprisingly throaty engine note and pleasing ‘oomph’. Its 147kW and 470Nm are roughly standard for rivals in this category. Our test model came with a relatively compliant six-speed manual, (although I’d be tempted to buy the optional six-speed auto). In the

manual, shifts were smooth and precise, and the clutch reasonably light and progressive. Despite its size, the driving experience is surprisingly refined – it sits securely on the road – albeit with a touch of bounce over sharp bumps thanks to its truck-like suspension. Load space ranges from 1.21 cubic metres in the

crew cab to 1.82 cubic metres in the single cab. Braked-towing capacity on our test car was a hefty 3350 kilos. Its size can make parking difficult, but the cabin is quiet, the seats extremely comfortable, and there’s no shortage of hi-tech gear.

onda Australia this week welcomed the first delivery of Thai-built Hondas from its plant in Ayutthaya since devastating floods suspended its operations last October. “The Ayutthaya factory in Thailand is vital to the success of Honda Australia, with 80 per cent of stock sourced from this factory,” says director and general manager sales and marketing, Stephen Collins. “This is our first shipment of vehicles in months and includes Jazz, Civic, CR-V and new City models. “Product from this factory benefits our customers in two ways. They receive high-quality products built to

Honda’s stringent global standards as well as competitive pricing as a result of the Australia-Thai Free Trade Agreement,” Collins says. Honda Australia imports vehicles from Japan, Thailand and the UK. The company faced several challenges in 2011 with an earthquake and tsunami in Japan affecting its research and development facility and flooding in Thailand impacting supply of stock. Despite challenges like the tsunami in Japan and the flooding in Thailand, Honda pressed on. The company says it plans to win back market share by achieving 40,000 sales in Australia this year.

When Audi factory drivers tackle the Le Mans 24 Hours this month, digital rear-view mirror technology will enhance their vision. “In the past, our drivers had to strictly rely on the outside mirrors when looking rearward,” says head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. “Yet the rear end and the rear wings, plus the vibrations that occur at high speeds, significantly limit the field of vision of these mirrors.” AMOLED screens have a short response time and can show

multicoloured images and offer better resolution thanks to particularly small pixels. “Therefore, even at 330 kilometres per hour, we’re achieving a totally fluid image flow in realtime transmission,” says Ullrich.

New i30 hits the road Hyundai’s new generation i30 is the latest in Hyundai’s line-up to follow the company’s new ‘fluidic sculpture’ design. Designed at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new car has just been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent vehicle assessment organisation, Euro NCAP. The i30 has been a success for Hyundai in Australia, selling 101,000 units. Features of the new model include seven airbags, reversing camera on Elite and Premium models, six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed auto, touch screen sat-nav and audio system on selected models.

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL WORDS Peter Atkinson Cheap and cheerful, or cheap and nasty? Sometimes it’s a fine line. Holden’s new city car, the Barina Spark, may be a bit of both. The Spark, which in essence is a Korean-built Daewoo with some Holden DNA injected, is the Red Lion brand’s weapon to gain a toehold in the bargain-basement segment that is attracting an increasing number of young gen Y and gen Z buyers. For Holden, introducing young buyers to the brand is important. The risk for Holden, of course, is that by doing so with an inferior product, it could potentially damage the overall perception of the Holden brand. The $14,990 driveaway pricetag is still among the lowest on the market, and it’s surprisingly fun to drive – in a basic, uncomplicated kind of way. Its 1.2-litre, four-cylinder engine is buzzy, as you might expect, and produces a very modest 59kW and puny 107Nm of torque.

On the positive side, though, is the fuel consumption – which at 5.6L/100 kilometre is not best-in-class but still represents very frugal driving, indeed. The five-speed manual transmission is trouble-free if uninspiring. The shift is a bit sloppy, but that’s compensated by a light clutch which makes ugh working your way through the ratios an easy chore.. i d It’s reasonably well-equipped and comes with a funky-looking instrument cluster. Interior trim has been worked pretty hard to achieve a modern, funky look, with reasonably supportive vinyl seats. Impressively, even the base model gets electronic stability control – a must-have for young drivers, which will help the car control a skid – as well as six airbags and a strengthened

body shell. Despite its size, the Spark seemed surprisingly at home on the freeway, although the absence of cruise control is a negative. Its tiny turning circle and abundance of glass makes it an absolute breeze to park and it takes up very little space with its short wheelbase. So, what’s the verdict in the cheerful versus nasty stakes? Well, I have to confess that the Spark isn’t exactly my cup of tea – not that you’d expect it to be.

Forty-something males are hardly among its target demographic. My 17-year-old daughter thought it cute enough. My wife, who did drive it, was equally non-committal. Still, for the price, it’s hard to complain too much about the Spark’s numerous shortcomings. It’s cheap, without doubt. And you’ve got to be cheerful about that.

Renault’s concept car wows Monaco Renault’s concept car the Alpine A110-50 has made its debut at the Monaco F1 Grand Prix in celebration of the Alpine Berlinette sports car’s 50th birthday. The vehicle is engineered, says Renault, with a focus on performance and driving enjoyment, blending Renault’s sporting passion and technical nous. We were guided by our hearts and emotions.” Produced with the renowned expertise of Renault Sport Technologies, the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car is imbued with the world of motorsport. Sources say the vehicle is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine, capable of producing 298kW of power, driven by a six-speed semi-automatic transmission. Japanese car maker Infiniti to take on world with help from Vettel Infiniti, the luxury performance automotive brand from Japan, is launching its first global brand campaign. It focuses on the FX crossover with the help of brand ambassador and Red Bull Racing’s double World Champion, Sebastian Vettel. The brand’s Australian website is now live, promising would-be buyers a “new choice in performance luxury” coming soon. Jean-Pierre Diernaz, Infiniti marketing and communication director for Europe, Middle East and Africa, says Infiniti has a strong point of view on what is performance and how it should be delivered. “Using the best pilot in the world, Sebastian Vettel, to illustrate this, shows how serious we are in our ambitions to develop the brand,” she says. The creative platform was developed by TBWA\G1 in Paris. European Creative Director Alasdhair

MacGregor Hasties says, “By showing how emotion is more important than cold science, we have given Infiniti its own performance positioning.” Since May 24 the advertising campaign has been brought to life across Europe, with the TV commercial followed by activities on digital and social media platforms. A poster campaign containing 20 stunning works of art from five different artists from all around the globe will support the TV campaign. GOLDEN OLDIE It’s Yandina’s turn to host a trip from MPP. It’s here visitors will find affordable property in a town with a long history.

T

he first rail town north of Nambour and the key access point for the beaches around Coolum, Yandina held on to its small country town vibe longer than those south of Nambour, which found themselves in the Brisbane commuter belt. The locality includes North Arm and Verrierdale in the north, across Mt Ninderry, Yandina Creek and Valdora to Coolum Creek and the Maroochy River in the east, and south to Kulangoor, taking in Wappa Falls. Cooloolabin is hidden in the bush to the west. Yandina is an old township. The first settlers arrived in 1853 and the town was established in 1870, with more residents arriving after the opening of the railway line in 1891. There was then little residential development until the 1960s, but even then it remained a small country town with a post office, pub, school of arts, railway station, school, bowls club, supermarket and a few other basic retail services, for another three decades. Even as the foothills and slopes of Mt Ninderry were turned over to prime residential estates and the Maroochy River acreages between

The Yandina district covers an area of almost 10,000 hectares the M1 and the Sunshine Motorway opened up, Yandina township held on to its roots. A large industrial estate, where the Ginger Factory was relocated when the streets of Buderim became too expensive, is at the eastern entrance to the town, which prospered after the opening of the Bruce Highway bypass. The Yandina district has a land area of 9704 hectares, much of it large tracts of former caneland and national park, and a

population of 0.55 people per hectare at the 2006 census. Yandina is a quiet and generally affordable family area, with plenty of residential opportunities from basic houses around town to mansions in the slopes to the east. In the west, the forests around Cooloolabin and Wappa still offer some isolation for anyone wanting to escape the rat race. The district has long since changed from Hicksville to Pleasantville.
