t’s that time again – this weekend, the Spring Ideal Home Show returns to the RDS with the focus clearly on quality, value and choice. F
or most people buying a house is one of the biggest investments they will make in their lifetime. Still, as we go through different life stages our needs change and these changes need to be reflected in our home. If you feel you have outgrown your house, before you get the movers in consider an extension. According to Hugh Geoghegan of EPM Architectural, a house needs to have enough flexibility to allow you to live there for a prolonged period of time. “A lot of people move into a house just after marrying and the house has a certain function at that time. During that time they may want an extension because they feel the children need more room to move around. But you need to think ahead to five years’ time, when the playroom isn’t important anymore. The idea of future proofing is that you have catered for all of these scenarios with the design and have chosen the right materials that will last and be durable enough to see you through the next twenty or twenty five years.” With such an important objective, it can be difficult to know where to start and what considerations to make. Hugh’s advice? Always keep in mind why you are planning an extension. “It’s important to keep things simple. You need to figure out what isn’t working in the house and the best way of adjusting the house for your needs. “The worst crime is not taking time to plan things properly and sourcing an architect who will listen to your needs and provide you with something you want.” “Every building is different and the context of the building is different,” says Sarah Jolley of Hassett Ducatez Architects.

Room to Extend “You need to be aware of whether you are improving your home or detracting from the existing structure. “As architects, our starting point is the client’s brief and we visit the house with the
client and ask them questions to ensure they have thought everything through. Questions like if you have a south facing window and you want to add an extension, what does that mean for the building? Its access to light needs to be considered.” However, one of the most important reasons for adding an extension according to Sarah is the cost - both financial and social. “In the current economic environment, extending is much less of a
financial burden than moving. You don’t have to negotiate a new mortgage cover and deal with the risks of trying to sell your house. “Further, when you move you’re essentially starting afresh. Very often people have emotional attachments to the place they live and their surrounding community which can be difficult to replicate. So an extension is about enjoying the space you live in but having a better quality of life.”

aith Popcorn is without a doubt an unusual name. It was not so much the name that intrigued me - but rather her line of work. I read a very interesting article a few years ago about Popcorn and I’ve been keeping an eye on her ever since. Faith Popcorn is the founder of futurist marketing firm BrainReserve, a company that has been tracking trends for more than two decades. She has been called “America’s leading trend expert” and dubbed the "Nostradamus of marketing" by Fortune Magazine. So what does Faith forecast for 2011? BrainReserve “is predicting for 2011, and for the decades to come, that we will enter an unprecedented period marked by the end of our traditional gender divide.” Or – as they call it - the EN-GEN era. The EN-GEN era is “neither female nor male, just human.”

ON TREND This ‘EN-GEN’ influence is evident in the emerging products available for our homes. For kitchens, a combination of a slick manmade finish and tactile natural wood is a perfect example of this fusing of Ying and Yang at KUBE Kitchens.
“The trend at the moment is definitely moving towards a sleeker design,” says Orla McNally of KUBE. “We’re seeing more sophisticated colour pallets and combining materials is also becoming increasingly popular. The KUBE Harmony kitchen mixes high gloss cupboards with shaker style oak drawers.” In furniture and fabrics, there has also been a shift away from very masculine or very feminine designs. We are seeing less of the black leather and chrome furniture combinations and similarly less floral and over adorned fabrics. Prints and indeed florals are very popular at the moment but they are less ‘pretty’ and so appeal to both men and women. I’ve used a stunning wallpaper by Suzi Hoodless for Osborne in my hallway which combines soft greys and hot pink and my husband loves it! It’s the perfect
backdrop to an otherwise pretty ordinary space and it certainly does make a statement. We are finally choosing things for our home because we like them – gone are the days of doing up your house with prospective buyers in mind.

W
hen Steve Ryan of Caragh Angel was asked to design this year’s feature garden for the Spring Ideal Home Show, he envisioned a space where you can do all the things you do inside your home. From this he developed the theme – Eat, Sleep, Drink. “We decided to build three main areas to represent these while still keeping it to the size of your standard back garden,” he says. “The first large circular area represents Eat. This is a big common area which is paved and accommodates tables and chairs - perfect for entertaining. “The second area is Sleep which is quite cosy. This section of the garden is half shaded and half sunny, so it’s a peaceful and secluded area with some big outdoor bean bags. We’ve used a lot of old sleepers and
planters, and some very high quality artificial lawn. A couple of years ago this would have been a sin,” explains Steve, “but the quality is so good now, it’s the way forward. “Finally, the smaller circular space away from the rest of the garden is Drink, and has an old wrought iron table and two chairs which are perfect for a glass of wine

in the evening. There’s a small wall which provides shelving for candles to create a warm and homely feel.” This low-maintenance garden is simple and practical, and aims to give visitors to the show the opportunity to visualise how even one of these three sections could work in their own garden.

ome owners with green fingers across the country have been calculating the loss to their gardens since the end of the cold snap. One of the harshest Irish winters in decades decimated previously healthy gardens, and people are starting to reconsider what they plant in their garden. “Before the last two very bad winters,” says Gerry Daly of The Irish Garden magazine, “we had about ten mild winters, so people were planting coastal plants further and further inland, and a lot of that got caught out. “There was quite a lot of Griselinia killed,” says Gerry, “and you can understand that people don’t want to take that risk again because it takes years for that plant to get established. But on the other hand, there’s no great harm in taking a risk with some smaller plants.” But before taking your garden apart, be sure that your plants are actually dead by checking if the bark is lifting off the plant at ground level or if the plant is loose in the ground. In this case, the plant is dead and should be removed.
