Getting Rid of Insects

“Look,” said Sam. “There are insects all over my plants.”

“Yes,” said Molly.

“There are lots of hungry insects, munching and crunching.

We must get rid of these insects.”

“Can we use insect spray to get rid of the insects?” said Sam.

“No,” said Molly. “That will put insect spray on the plants.

Do you want to eat insect spray?”

“No,” said Sam. “But what else can we do to get rid of the insects?”

“Let’s find out what insects are eating your plants,” said Molly.

Molly put a big plastic bag around the bean plant to catch the insects.

Soon there were lots of insects in the bag.

Molly tipped these insects out of the bag and onto a sheet of paper.

“I know how to get rid of these insects,” said Molly.

“How?” said Sam. “Plant these yellow flowers next to the beans,” said Molly.

“Insects do not like the smell of these flowers.

The smell will keep the insects away.”

Then Molly looked under a pumpkin leaf. There were lots of insects eating the plant.

“I know how to get rid of these insects too,” said Molly.

“You need more insects!”

“More insects?” said Sam. “I don’t want more insects.”

“You need ladybugs,” said Molly.

“The ladybugs will eat these insects, but they will not eat the pumpkins.”

So Sam and Molly planted lots of yellow flowers next to the beans.

They got a big box of ladybugs and put them on the pumpkins.

It worked!

Soon there were no insects munching and crunching the plants.

The beans and the pumpkins grew big and fat.
