Support the students in activating their prior knowledge.

Ask: ¿Qué saben sobre la primera expedición al Polo Norte? ¿Cuándo piensan que haya sucedido? ¿Por qué podría ser importante? Give each student a copy of the book Un largo viaje. Say: Este libro cuenta la historia de cuándo y cómo llegaron las primeras personas al Polo Norte.

Direct them to pay attention to the cover, and the title and contents pages. Have the students browse through the book.

Say: Mientras hojean el libro, piensen en todo lo que sepan de este tema. ¿Qué ideas pueden relacionar? Have the students discuss their thinking with the group.

Vocabulary Have students return to the word lists they created prior to reading the book. Ask them to add new words to this list.

Encourage them to refer to this list as they undertake the writing task that follows.
