Introducing the book

Second reading of the book

Ask: ¿Qué animales podemos encontrar viviendo en un jardín? Make a list with a simple drawing of each animal next to its name.

Show the front cover of the shared book ¿Qué animal vive aquí? Say: Este libro es un libro de adivinanzas. Se llama ¿Qué animal vive aquí? Tenemos que encontrar a los animales que viven en el jardín. Say: Este libro es un libro informativo porque nos dice cosas que son verdaderas. No es un cuento ni una historia inventada.

Read the book a second time to the students. Encourage them to join in as you read. Say: Vamos a volver a leer este libro.

Esta vez todos me pueden ayudar. Yo voy a señalar las palabras mientras las leemos. Use a pointer to point to each word as you read it. Encourage the students to read with you.

First reading of the book Read the book to the students with very few stops along the way. Read using rhythm and emphasize the rhyming words.

Make your voice sound smooth and clear. Read pages 2 and 3. Give students time to study the photograph before turning the page. Ask: ¿Qué animales podrían vivir en este jardín?

Read page 4. Provide time for the students to study the photograph. Ask students to offer answers to the text: ¿Qué animal vive aquí?

Turn to pages 6 and 7. Read page 6 and point to the snail (caracol). Read the question on page 7 and again give the students time to study the photograph and make a guess as to what animal the boy can see.

Continue reading in this manner so that students have time to make predictions before reading the answer page.

After reading the information on the answer pages, ask: ¿Qué más sabes de este animal? Talk about the students’ responses. Where appropriate talk about the names of the animals’ homes such as web and nest.

On page 16, talk through the photographic summary table.

Say: Estas fotos están en un cuadro o gráfica. Una tabla es una forma de organizar la información para que sea fácil verla. Esta tabla nos muestra cada uno de los animales que aparecen en este libro y lo que comen. Point to the snail and the leaves next to it. Say: En estas fotos podemos ver que los caracoles comen hojas. Invite students to explain the other parts of the table.

If appropriate, complete the retelling activity on the inside back cover of the shared book.

Talking about the book Invite students to respond to the book and to talk about their thinking.

Say: Un libro informativo es un libro que habla de cosas reales, no de cosas o historias inventadas.

Ask: ¿Es éste un libro informativo? ¿Por qué piensan eso? ¿Qué aprendieron al leer este libro? ¿Qué otros animales podríamos haber encontrado en este libro?

Vocabulary support Encourage the students to name and talk about each mini beast – what its name is, what it looks like, what it might eat, where it lives, etc. Support students by ensuring they know the names of the mini beasts in the book. Use the Despegando hacia la lectura Vocabulary Starter Animales en miniatura to talk about other animals students might see in a garden. Show and talk about the labeled photographs.

Returning to the book

Extending oral language

Return to the book on multiple occasions, inviting the students to join in. Encourage them to take increasing responsibility for reading the text to themselves. Select the focus for subsequent lessons based on your students’ strengths and needs.

Choose one of the animals from the book. Say: Vamos a pensar en todas las palabras que sabemos y que nos dicen algo de este animal. Model writing a concept map about the chosen animal. For example, caracol – concha, antena, lento; saltamontes – verde, saltarín, patas largas, rápido. Repeat, where appropriate, with other animals from the book.

Phonemic awareness Say: Voy a escribir el nombre de algunos de los animales del libro. La primera palabra que voy a escribir es pájaro. Ask: ¿Es una palabra larga o corta? Talk about the students’ reasons for their answer.

Phonics Write the words araña and animal on the board. Point to each word in turn and say: Esta palabra dice araña y esta palabra dice animal. ¿Qué tienen en común las dos palabras?

Draw out that they both start with the /a/ sound. Draw a circle around the letter “a” at the beginning of each word.

Print concepts Turn to page 4. Say: Voy a leer esta pregunta. Point to each word as you read. Say: Vamos a contar las palabras en esta oración: 1, 2, 3, 4. Hay cuatro palabras en esta pregunta. Using the pointer, circle the question marks at the beginning and end of the question. Say: Esto no es una palabra ni una letra. Se llama interrogación. En español tenemos un signo de interrogación al revés al principio y otro con el punto abajo al final de la pregunta. Y eso le dice al lector que se hace una pregunta.

Have students find the question marks.

Writing – Modeled On a chart, write the question: ¿Qué animal vive aquí? Say: Ahora voy a hacer un dibujo de un animal que vive en un jardín.

Draw an animal that is NOT in the book. Say: Voy a escribir sobre este animal. Write sentences using the structure of the text as a model. For example, Una mariquita vive aquí. Come hojas. Talk aloud as you write. Say: La primera palabra en esta oración es Una. Ahora voy a dejar un espacio antes de escribir la siguiente palabra – mariquita. Mariquita empieza con la letra “m.”

Have student write and draw to complete a sentence starter: Un/Una _______________________ vive aquí.
