Mi perro Ciclón innovates on the traditional rhyme in English (My Dog Rags). Using rhyming verse, this story introduces rich, descriptive verbs. Ciclón really is the funniest dog you’ll ever meet!

Introducing the book

Second reading of the book

Ask: ¿Quién tiene un perro? ¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre tu perro?

Provide time for students to share their stories about their pet dogs.

Reread the book. This time encourage the students to join in with you as you read. Say: Ahora vamos a leer juntos el libro otra vez. Esta vez no voy a decir algunas palabras y quiero que ustedes solos las digan.

Hold the shared book upside down in front of the students.

Say: Les voy a leer este libro. Wait for the students to alert you that it is upside down. Have a student put the book up the right way.

As you turn to each new double-page spread, ask: ¿Qué está haciendo Ciclón en estas páginas? Reply to the students’ answers using the structure of the text. For example, say: Sí, muy bien.

Ask: ¿Cómo sabemos cuando el libro está en la posición correcta?

Draw out that the words and the picture must be up the right way.

As you read, leave out words at the end of the verse. Pause and indicate to the students to say the left-out word, e.g.

Say: Este libro se llama Mi perro Ciclón. ¿De qué puede tratar el libro?

First reading of the book Read the book to the students with very few stops along the way. Read with rhythm putting emphasis on the rhyming words at the end of each line, e.g.

Tengo un perro llamado Ciclón.

Como come mucho está muy panzón.

As you turn each page, pause before you begin to read. This will allow time for the students to absorb the information in the illustrations before they listen to the words.

Si le doy jamón, loco se quiere (pause) __________.

If appropriate, complete the retelling activity on the inside back cover of the shared book.

Talking about the book Invite students to respond to the book and to talk about their thinking.

Ask: ¿De qué raza es Ciclón? ¿Cómo lo describirían? ¿Les gustaría tener un perro como Ciclón? ¿Por qué sí o por qué no? ¿Hacen todos los perros lo mismo que Ciclón hace en este libro? ¿Qué sería algo bueno de cuidar un perro? ¿Y qué sería difícil?

Vocabulary support Encourage the students to name and talk about the things dogs do. Say: A los perros les gusta hacer muchas cosas, como comer, correr, olfatear, nadar, escarbar y dormir. Use the Despegando hacia la lectura Vocabulary Starter Hacer cosas to discuss some of the things dogs can do. Show and talk about the labeled photographs.

Returning to the book Return to the book on multiple occasions, inviting the students to join in. Encourage them to take increasing responsibility for reading the text to themselves. Select the focus for subsequent lessons based on your students’ strengths and needs.

Phonemic awareness Say: Este libro está escrito en rima, es decir que algunas de las palabras del libro riman – terminan con el mismo sonido. Dos palabras que riman son caminar y jugar. ¿Quién sabe otras palabras que riman? Discuss students’ responses.

Read the sentence to the students, pointing to each word as you say it. Put a circle around the word perro. Say: Esta palabra dice perro. ¿Qué sonido escuchan al principio de esta palabra? Vamos a decir juntos el sonido de /p/.

Point to the letter “p.” Say: La palabra perro empieza con la letra “p” y hace el sonido /p/. Vamos a pensar otras palabras que empiecen con la letra “p” y con el sonido /p/. Write the students’ suggestions on the chart.

Extending oral language Turn to pages 8 and 9. Say: En estas páginas dice qué hace Ciclón en el parque. Voy a leerles estas páginas otra vez. El autor usa muchas palabras para decir lo que Ciclón hace. Quiero que escuchen con cuidado mientras leo y me digan cuáles son esas palabras.

Print concepts Show the front cover to the students. Invite a student to come to the front and point to the title. Use the title to discuss the concept of a word and that letters make up words. Writing – Modeled Ask: ¿Qué otra cosa le gusta hacer a Ciclón? Listen and talk about the students’ ideas. Say: Vamos a escribir una oración sobre Ciclón, con sus ideas.

Read a sentence starter: A Ciclón le gusta ________.

Talk aloud as you write a word in the blank. Say: Voy a escribir que a Ciclón le gusta brincar. Necesito escribir la palabra brincar. Sé que empieza con la letra “b” entonces voy a escribir esa letra primero.

Reread the sentence using a pointer pointing to each word.

Invite individual students to come to the front and use the pointer to read the sentence with one-to-one correspondence between the written and spoken word.

Select students to listen and read along to Mi perro Ciclón independently. Provide each student with a small book and a reading pen. Encourage students to listen and read along from start to finish and then to revisit their favorite pages.
