Vocabulary Starter

Based on a traditional English rhyme Leti Lechuga y su oruga (Little Arabella Miller) is a girl who finds a caterpillar. Leti loves her caterpillar and shows it to the members of her family. But … one day the caterpillar begins to change. Very soon, Leti Lechuga no longer has a caterpillar.

She has a beautiful butterfly!

Introducing the book

Second reading of the book

Ask: ¿Qué saben de las orugas? Provide time to listen and respond to students’ answers.

On the second reading of the book, encourage the students to read along with you where appropriate. As you read, create an oral cloze for the students to fill in. Do this by pausing as you read to allow the students to say certain selected words. Leave out words that are obvious for the students to predict. For example, on page 2, leave out the word oruga and prompt the students to say the word together.

Show the front cover of Leti Lechuga y su oruga. Point to the title and say: Este es el título o nombre del libro. Dice: Leti Lechuga y su oruga. Point to each word as you say it to emphasize one-to-one correspondence between the spoken and written word.

Say: Esta historia es de una niña que se llama Leti Lechuga que encuentra una oruga. Habla con todos los miembros de su familia sobre su oruga. ¿Qué creen que vaya a pasar con la oruga?

On page 4, leave out the word hermano .

First reading of the book

Read the book to the students with very few stops along the way. Read with rhythm, accentuating the rhyming aspect of the book.

If appropriate, complete the retelling activity on the inside back cover of the shared book.

When reading direct speech, make your voice sound like the person who is speaking. For example, on page 5, speak firmly and decisively when saying what the mother says: “Leti Lechuga, saca de aquí esa oruga.”

As you read, run your finger along the bottom of the text to demonstrate left-to-right directionality.

Talking about the book Invite students to respond to the book and talk about their thinking.

Ask: ¿Qué le pasó a la oruga que encontró Leti Lechuga? ¿Qué crees que pensaban de la oruga los miembros de la familia de Leti Lechuga? ¿Por qué? ¿Qué otros animales que viven en los jardines aparecen en el libro? ¿Les gusta buscar animales como las orugas? ¿Quién nos puede contar qué animales ha encontrado?

Vocabulary support Encourage the students to talk about people who can be in a family. Ask: ¿Quién forma tu familia?

Provide time for students to talk about the members in their family. Say: ¿Qué le dio de comer Leti Lechuga a su oruga? ¿Qué le dijo su papá a Leti Lechuga? Use the Despegando hacia la lectura Vocabulary Starter Mi familia to discuss families. Show and talk about the labeled photographs.

Returning to the book Return to the book on multiple occasions, inviting the students to join in. Encourage them to take increasing responsibility for reading the text to themselves. Select the focus for subsequent lessons based on your students’ strengths and needs.

Phonemic awareness Model how to hear syllables in words. Do this by saying the word oruga. Clap each syllable as you do.

Say: La palabra oruga tiene tres partes. A las partes de la palabra las llamamos sílabas. Ahora, vamos a aplaudir mientras decimos la palabra oruga. o-ru-ga Ask individual students, pairs, or small groups of students to say and clap the syllables in the word oruga. Phonics Explore the /p/ sound made by the letter “p” as in pastel and papá. Write the words pastel and papá on a chart. Say: Estas palabras empiezan con la misma letra. Point to the “p” in each word. Say: Las dos palabras empiezan con la letra “p” y las dos tienen el sonido /p/ al principio.

Invite students to come to the front and circle each letter “p” they can see. Talk about other words that begin with the /p/ sound.

Extending oral language Read the book. Say: Cuando Leti Lechuga encontró la oruga, era pequeña, pero después creció. Turn to pages 6 and 7 and ask: ¿Qué hizo Leti Lechuga para ayudarla a crecer? Draw out from the conversation that Leti gave her something to eat. Sí, muy bien.

Make a two-column chart. Write the word grande in one column and the word pequeño in the other column.

Fluency After reading what each character in the book said, ask: ¿Qué dijeron mamá, papá, Samuel, la abuela y Leti Lechuga? ¿Cómo sabes? Read the direct speech with expression each time, demonstrating how to read a character’s voice.

Say: Escuchen lo que dice y cómo cambia mi voz cuando leo.

Print concepts Model the return sweep. Read page 2 and point to each word as you say it. Point out the period. Say: Esto se llama punto, que es lo que nos dice que se acabó la oración. Reread the sentence and emphasize the return sweep, as you continue to read. Invite students to take turns reading the words using the pointer.

Writing – Modeled Say: Voy a escribir por qué me gustan las orugas. Model writing your sentence. Think aloud as you write.
