¡Qué alboroto! is a tale about three scary monsters who make a mighty hullabaloo (alboroto). They cause all sorts of trouble as they stomp into town.

But, when their monster mother finds them and sees what her naughty monsters have done, she gets very cross and makes them clean up their mess.

Now, the naughty monsters can only dream about making a hullabaloo (alboroto)!

Introducing the book

Second reading of the book

Show the front cover of the shared book ¡Qué alboroto! to the whole group and point to the title. Say: Este libro se llama ¡Qué alboroto! Hacer alboroto es hacer desorden, ruido y gritería.

Point to the illustration on the front cover and ask the students to describe the monsters. Ask: ¿Qué sonidos creen que pueda hacer un monstruo? Say: Esta historia no es real, es imaginaria. Los personajes principales son monstruos que están en un pueblo imaginario que parece muy limpio y ordenado. Tal vez estos monstruos van a hacer un alboroto, mucho desorden, ruido y gritería.

Read the book a second time to the students. Say: Vamos a leer juntos ¡Qué alboroto! Yo voy a ir señalando las palabras y ustedes pueden leerlas conmigo. Use a pointer to point to each word on the page as you read it. Read the book aloud and encourage the whole group to join in, especially when reading the refrain on pages 4 and 16. Say: Vamos a practicar esta parte primero y luego la vamos a leer todos juntos. On page 5, say: Vamos a leer esta parte juntos. El monstruo verde dice: ¡Hay que tirar la ropa, jálenla con las manos! Have the students all read together. Repeat on page 7 with: ¡Qué locura! If appropriate, complete the retelling activity on the inside back cover of the shared book.

First reading of the book Read the book to the students with very few stops along the way. Read fluently and expressively to engage the students with the book. After finishing each page provide some time for the students to look at the pictures before turning the page.

Read the chorus on page 4 in a loud voice. Make your voice louder as you read the words, rugir, rugir, rugir; gruñir, gruñir, gruñir; and the final word, reír. At the end of page 5, stop and say: El monstruo verde está haciendo un alboroto – va corriendo, gritando y haciendo un desorden. Fíjense bien para ver el alboroto que van a hacer los monstruos.

Talking about the book Invite students to respond to the book and talk about their thinking.

Ask: ¿Qué hizo el monstruo verde para hacer un alboroto? ¿Qué hizo el monstruo azul? ¿Qué hizo el monstruo amarillo? ¿Cómo reaccionó Mamá Monstruo? ¿Qué soñaban los monstruos? ¿Les dan miedo estos monstruos? ¿Por qué sí o por qué no?

Point to each word as you read it to demonstrate one-to-one word correspondence and left-to-right directionality.

Vocabulary support Encourage the students to name and talk about colors they know. Support students by talking about the different colored monsters from the book. Use the Despegando hacia la lectura Vocabulary Starter Colores to talk about colors. Show and talk about the labeled photographs.

Returning to the book Return to the book on multiple occasions, inviting the students to join in. Encourage them to take increasing responsibility for reading the text to themselves. Select the focus for subsequent lessons based on your students’ strengths and needs.

Phonemic awareness Model that some words rhyme because they have word endings that sound the same. Say: En esta historia se usan muchas palabras que riman. Las palabras que riman terminan con el mismo sonido. Vamos a buscar algunas palabras que rimen. Vamos a las páginas 2 y 3. Say: En esta página hay palabras que riman. Repeat, as applicable, with rhyming words on other pages of the book.

Phonics Revisit the front cover of the book and read the title. Say: Este libro se llama ¡Qué alboroto! la primera palabra empieza con la letra “Q.” Así es como se escribe la letra “Q.” Point to the letter “Q” in Qué. Ask: ¿Qué sonido hace la letra “q” en la palabra qué?

Fluency Have small groups of students take turns to say the chorus.

Model saying the words fluently and with rhythm.

Encourage the students to say the words like this as well.

Print concepts Model how words are made up of letters. Turn to page 2.
