Introducing the book

Second reading of the book

Show the front cover of the shared book Las cosas favoritas de la abuela. Say: Este libro se llama Las cosas favoritas de la abuela.

Read the book a second time to the students. Say: Voy a volver a leerles el libro. Esta vez quiero que lean conmigo cuando lea las cosas que la niña le aconseja al abuelo que compre.

Point to each word as you say it to demonstrate one-to-one correspondence between the written and spoken word. Point out the name of the author and the illustrator. Say: El autor escribió las palabras y el ilustrador hizo los dibujos. Este libro habla sobre ir de compras. ¿Quién va de compras? ¿Qué cosas les gusta comprar? Discuss students’ responses.

Read pages 2 and 3. Pause before you say the name of the food to encourage the students to join in. Point to the picture of the food as you pause to prompt students as to what they need to say. For example: —No —le dije—.

First reading of the book

Where appropriate, you might like to ask a student, pairs of students, or small groups to come to the front and read certain parts of the book with you. For example, on page 3, you might say: ¿Quién quiere leer conmigo la parte que dice la niña?

Read the book to the students with very few stops along the way. Read fluently and expressively to engage the students with the book. After finishing each page provide some time for the students to look at the pictures before turning the page.

Use expression when reading the direct speech. Make the grandpa’s voice sound quite puzzled. Pause after reading each suggestion that the grandpa offers. When reading the girl’s direct speech, make her voice sound assertive and excited — show that she is sure about her decision. As you read, use a pointer to point to each word. This reinforces where the words are on the page and the direction in which they are read.

If appropriate, complete the retelling activity on the inside back cover of the shared book.

Talking about the book Invite students to respond to the book and to talk about their thinking.

Ask: ¿Quién sabía cuáles son las cosas favoritas de la abuela?¿Por qué creen que sea la niña la que sepa todo esto? ¿Por qué no iba de compras con ellos la abuela? ¿Alguna vez le han dado a alguien una sorpresa? ¿Qué pasó?

Vocabulary support Encourage the students to name and talk about the foods in the book. For example, say: Peperoni es un tipo de carne que a algunas personas les gusta en la pizza. ¡Pica un poco! Los pepinillos son verduras verdes.

Returning to the book

Extending oral language

Return to the book on multiple occasions, inviting the students to join in. Encourage them to take increasing responsibility for reading the text themselves. Select the focus for subsequent lessons based on your students’ strengths and needs.

Turn to pages 4 and 5. Say: En esta página hay cosas de la salchichonería y la pescadería. Voy a leerles la oración: Hay que llevar seis salchichas sazonadas con salsa. Emphasize the words seis and sazonadas as you read. Ask: ¿Qué palabras nos dicen más de las salchichas? Draw out that the words seis, sazonadas and salsa describe the salchichas.

Phonemic awareness Turn to pages 2 and 3. Say: Muchas palabras en esta página empiezan con el mismo sonido. Voy a volver a leer y quiero que ustedes escuchen con atención. Díganme qué palabras oyen que empiecen con el mismo sonido. Read the text on the pages and emphasize the /p/ sound.

After reading, talk with the students about the sound that they heard the most (the /p/ sound) and about the words that start with this sound (panqueques, pastel, pasta, pizza, peperoni, pepinillos). Say: ¿Ven alguna otra cosa en el dibujo que empiece con el sonido /p/? (e.g. piña, peras, pimiento, puerco, pan) Give time for the students to study the picture and offer suggestions. Repeat this activity using the sounds found on the other pages of the book.

If applicable, begin by listing students’ names in the group (e.g. Pam, Pepe, Pedro) onto the chart.

Add these to the chart. Repeat on other pages with other sound–letter combinations.

Turn to pages 6 and 7 and repeat this activity with the sentence: …porción pequeña de uvas. Say: Algunas palabras describen cómo son las cosas. Estas palabras nos dan más información de ese objeto.

Fluency After reading one of the pages, say: ¿Se dieron cuenta cómo leí estas palabras? Hice que mis voz sonara como la del abuelo y la de la niña cuando hablan. Invite students to make their voice sound like the grandpa or the girl.

Print concepts Use a pointer to follow the words as you read aloud. Say: ¿Se han fijado que siempre empiezo del lado izquierdo cuando leo las palabras?

Say: Mi cosa favorita para comprar es pastel. Voy a terminar esta oración escribiendo la palabra pastel. Write the word pastel onto the chart.

Read the whole sentence to the students, pointing to each word. If suitable, you might like to provide students with their own sentence starters (as above). They can write independently to finish their sentences and then illustrate them.

Independent practice Select students to listen and read along to Las cosas favoritas de la abuela independently.

Provide each student with a small book and a reading pen. Encourage students to listen and read along from start to finish and then to revisit their favorite pages.
