About Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy (RCT) is a procedure done by endodontist to remove the infected pulp from a tooth and replace it with a filling or crown to prevent the spread of infection.

When the pulp of a tooth becomes infected, it can cause pain, swelling, and even tooth loss. Root canal therapy can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted by removing the infected pulp and filling the root canals with a biocompatible artificial substance.

If an infection spreads to the root canal, it can cause a dental abscess, which is a painful collection of pus. The abscess can cause swelling in the face, neck, or head. In some cases, a pimple may appear on the gum. If the infection is not treated, the tooth may need to be extracted.

The pulp of a tooth can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to a variety of factors, including deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or injury to the tooth.

The whole processes of RCT may require up to 5 visits depending on the severity of the case.

Root canal treatment (RCT) should not be painful because the endodontist will numb the area with anesthetic before starting the procedure if it's necessary.

When to consider root canal treatment

Signs indicating that you need RCT :

Severe toothache when chewing. Excessive sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.

Tooth maybe discolored or have dark spot.

Gums around the affected tooth appear swolen or red.

Having periapical lesion, seen in x-ray.

Root canal re-treatment

Retreatment is a root canal procedure that is performed on a tooth that has already been treated before. This is because the initial root canal treatment may fail for a number of reasons, including:

Untreated or undetected root canals. This means that there were one or more canals in the tooth that were not cleaned or filled properly during the initial root canal procedure.

Improper canal obturation. This means that the root canals were not filled properly with filling material.

If you are experiencing any of those signs, you might need to receive RCT. It's better to consult your needs right away to your endodontist.

Leaking from the filling or crown. This means that there is a gap between the filling or crown and the tooth, which allows bacteria to enter the tooth and cause new infection.

A dental bridge is a restoration that can replace one or more missing teeth. It is anchored to the neighboring teeth, which may require grinding them down and crowning. Plastic dentures are held in place by clasps or other attachments.

Dental implant conditions

Dental implant may not for everyone. Here are some conditions for dental implant.

Fully grown jawbones

Healthy oral and gum tissues

Not having health condition that may intervere healing process such as diabetes

Not currently receiving any treatment that could interfere with the healing process, such as radiation therapy to the neck or head

Having jawbone that is able to support dental implants or can undergo bone grafting

Not a smoker or at least not a heavy smoker

Dental implant can be placed in people who are at least 18-20 years old, as the jawbone needs to be fully developed for the implant to be successful.

Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and do not require the neighboring teeth to be ground down.

Doctors may scan the jawbone with an X-ray to assess its strength and make sure whether it is suitable for an implant or it may not.

It takes 3-12 weeks for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. During this time, the patient will need to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the implant is placed.

Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, the dentist will attach a permanent tooth or bridge to it.

When to consider dental implant

Conditions that may require dental implants:

Gum disease that has caused tooth loss

Receding gums

Fractured or decayed teeth

Dentures that are no longer comfortable or functional

Difficulty chewing or speaking

Unsightly gaps in the smile

This condition occurs when baby falls asleep while drinking milk or any other beverages with sugar content such as juice. This will make their young teeth coated with sugary layer for too long that it may gradually damage their teeth.

About Dental Sealant

These surfaces are often rough and uneven, with many pits and grooves that can be difficult to clean with a toothbrush. Dental sealants help to prevent cavities by sealing out plaque and bacteria.

Tooth decay can start early in life, so it is recommended to apply dental sealants to young children's permanent teeth as soon as they grow in. If a tooth already has a filling, it does not need a sealant. Adults who are at a high risk of tooth decay may also want to consider getting dental sealants as a preventive measure.

Sealants only applied to teeth with naturally deep grooves such as molars. This kind of teeth is more likely to collect bacteria and become prone to decay.

Before applying a dental sealant, the tooth will be cleaned, rinsed, and dried thoroughly. A special solution will then be applied to roughen the tooth surface, which will help the sealant to bond better. The sealant will then be placed on the tooth and hardened with a special light. Finally, the sealant will be polished to give it a smooth and shiny surface.

Dental sealant would last from 2 - 4 years and should be checked regularly by dentist during general check up every 6 months. If needed, sealants can be re-applied when the initial sealant has worn out or chipped of.
