WILCOX-PALMER-SHAH NATURE PRESERVE

The definition of “secret summer,” this preserve is tucked discretely along East Grand Traverse Bay, just west of Kewadin. A short boardwalk, with steps descending a dune, transports you to turquoise waters lapping up against a stunning stretch of sandy beach—perfect for a day of swimming and beach reading. Access to the boardwalk is off N. Bayshore Drive, but visitors should note that there are no formal trails or parking areas. It’s also important to stick to the shoreline (and keep your pup on a leash!) when wandering, as the preserve is home to a very small population of protected Pitcher’s thistle (only one plant remains) and rare Lake Huron tansy. Birders—keep an eye out for bald eagles and Caspian terns that can sometimes be seen fishing off the shore. - A.J.
