Investigation of IOP shooting continues By Brian Sherman For The Island Eye News A week after five people were injured by gunfire on the beach at Isle of Palms, investigators were continuing to sort through “hundreds of hours” of video in an effort to determine who actually did the shooting. IOP Police Spokesman Sgt. Matt Storen said April 14 that investigators were looking at videos
collected from online sources, those that were taken with cellphones and footage from police body cams. He pointed out that the police department also had received information from local residents and others who were on the beach at the time of the shooting. “We got some good stuff out of the tip line,” he said. “Any lead is a good lead for our investigators.” (Continued on page 5)

First SI Earth Day is April 22
By Karen Byko For The Island Eye News Sullivan’s Island’s first annual Earth Day celebration will be held April 22. The family-friendly event will feature fun and educational nature-themed activities and art projects, bird banding demonstrations and a guided tour of the Maritime Forest. Earth Day is a collaborative initiative of Sullivan’s Island For All, the Sullivan’s Island Bird Banding Station, Poe Library, The Island Turtle Team and the Sullivan’s Island Community Garden. The park in front of Poe Library at 1920 I’On will be transformed into an Earth Day village from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where children and adults will be educated and entertained with face painting, bingo, puzzle challenges, art projects, a scavenger hunt and more. Members of Sullivan’s Island For All will be on hand to talk about the Maritime Forest, and the Island Turtle Team will provide an update on how this year’s nesting season is going. You also will have the opportunity to stroll through the community garden and a monarch butterfly art exhibit. Other activities include author Pamela Brownstein sharing her book of haikus inspired by life in the Lowcountry and a live demonstration at the (Continued on page 6)
By Brian Sherman For The Island Eye News Renovations recently completed at the Isle of Palms County Park enhance accessibility for disabled persons and also extend the life of ramps, stairs and railings that lead from the parking area to the beach. The park reopened March 1 after being closed for two months while the $600,000 project was being completed. Half the cost of the work was covered by a federal Land Water Conservation Fund grant. The new ADA-accessible boardwalk was

built on the same footprint as the old ramp but features extensions to a shower deck and a new observation deck that includes an Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant bench – “for those who need a rest, prefer not to be on the beach but still want to be close to the beach action and enjoy the views,” according to Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission Public Information Coordinator Sarah Reynolds.
