t longtime local favorite Brooklyn Joe’s Pizza, it’s all about the taste! The owner of the beloved restaurant, Nathan Mulholland, has spent 17+ years in the food industry, and has made pizzas in NJ, NY, and, since 2004, right here in South Florida. He knows, then, that it’s vital to serve consistently tasty meals across the board, no exceptions. For that reason, everything on Brooklyn Joe’s menu is made directly in house! The recipes were developed over time by Nathan himself, who comments that he learned to, “just put [his] own twist on things.” He also committed to never cutting corners by exclusively using high-quality ingredients.

Abby and I experienced this impressive dedication for ourselves at our latest review. Let’s dive in: There’s nothing quite like some tasty chicken wings, and you’ll find them at Brooklyn Joe’s Pizza!

We felt we should eat at least one thing that was healthy and green, so we also ordered the large Caesar salad ($9.95) as an appetizer. The abundance of fresh, crisp romaine lettuce was topped with an ample amount of crunchy croutons and shaved parmesan cheese, and included 2 cups of thick, peppery, and garlicky Caesar dressing on the side. For a starting course, the Caesar was perfect to split between the two of us. If you want to make it a main meal, though, then just ask to add some tender grilled chicken to it and you’ll be all set!

For the main event, Abby and I shared Brooklyn Joe’s 16” buffalo chicken pizza ($21.95) as well as the restaurant’s linguini with sausage entrée ($13.95), which is served with a side salad and garlic bread.

I can honestly say that the pizza at Brooklyn Joe’s is one of my favorites in the area! Now that I’ve had (and thoroughly enjoyed) the buffalo chicken version at Brooklyn Joe’s, I am committed to trying all of their other delectable varieties! Their crust has actual flavor, buttery and crisp, and it holds up an abundance of toppings very well, with zero sogginess. Additionally, the buffalo chicken pie has just the right amount of spice in its hot sauce drizzle and on its juicy grilled buffalo chicken slices. In fact, the heat levels tantalize your tastebuds without overpowering the rich, creamy gorgonzola sauce and mozzarella cheese on the pizza! If you’re especially sensitive to spiciness, however, then I recommend that you ask for a side of bleu cheese dressing to dip your slice into… the tanginess will cut more of that heat.

Italian spices. The traditional, robust marinara sauce further enhanced the juiciness of the sliced sausage as well. This entrée is a great choice if you’re hungry, as the portion is very generous, with plenty of meat, sauce, and al dente pasta to fill you up quickly.

We couldn’t decide on just one dessert from Brooklyn Joe’s Pizza, so we opted for two! We ordered the small cannolis (3 for $4.50) and zeppolis ($4.95).

The cannolis are an excellent choice if you have three people in your party because even though they are described as “small,” they are actually perfectlysized for each person to enjoy one. It’s just the right amount of sweetness to curb your cravings without overdoing it! To take a bite of the crunchy shell stuffed with ultra-thick, luscious, and decadent cream is to transport your tastebuds to heaven.

t goes without saying that we have all been horrified by the latest mass shootings, and although each life is precious, somehow it breaks your heart twice if it involves innocent children. I have spent the past week or so, as many of you have as well, first, trying to come up with solutions to gun violence, but then, realizing that the access to guns is part of the problem, but something much deeper and sinister is running amuck. I’m not talking about conspiracy theories, or political views, and not mental health problems, although that is my area, but something that most people are not talking about.

Many of these mass shooters are not mentally ill, although it defies logic to think they could be anything else but insane, but I reflect back on a visitor I had in my office 20 years ago. He was the husband of a patient, who came to take her appointment because she became ill, and he didn’t want her to be a no-show.

He was an older man, but not elderly, gray hair, tall and husky, rugged for his age, maybe in his 60’s. He was soft-spoken, and he 38

laid his hands on my desk for the entire visit. I couldn’t help but notice them, strong, masculine.

They reminded me of the hands of my deceased father, which is probably why I was drawn to look at them. He spoke about this and that, nothing in particular, but there was a wisdom in his words, and I remember not wanting the session to end. He and his wife were moving the following week, so this would be my only encounter with him, but his words stayed with me.

He asked if I had noticed the shift in the population, if I had seen that people weren’t as connected as they once were, as kind, as if some of the emotion of empathy and compassion and been seeping out, slowly. I said, no, I hadn’t noticed that.

Then he said quietly, keep an eye out. You will see the division in man, of good and evil. It wasn’t necessarily a religious remark, as much as it seemed to be a prediction, of which he had become aware, before the rest of us. I think of that comment often, and I am going to pass it on to you.

Yes, there are psychopaths, who prey on the weak, and mentally ill persons who are in need of therapy and medication, but digging deeper, I think back on some of the adolescents that I have treated in the past ten years, the lack of respect they had for authority figures, the outspoken anger at their parents, and more than that, something that disturbed me very much.

When I looked into their eyes, I saw nothing but hollow. I can’t describe in words what this means, other than to say, that you will know it, if you see it. So, yes, I agree to stiffer gun laws, age laws, background checks and mental health treatment. Those things can be addressed and changed. But hollow eyes? That is pure evil.

With all of these facts in mind, Abby and I went in for lunch and brought our friend, Kelly, along. The dining room is very light, open, and airy. There are high ceilings and polished, dark wooden tables. A consistent nautical theme, with large, decorative fish, nets, and boats spread throughout, add to the comfortable ambience of the space.

For an appetizer, Abby ordered the ahi tuna nachos ($10.95) without the wontons. Alli, our gracious server, had no problem fulfilling this request. The tuna had a beautiful, vibrant color.

Abby thoroughly enjoyed it.

For our midday meals, Abby got the seafood pot ($19.95), Kelly picked the fresh catch of the day, which was snapper ($24.95), and I went with the shrimp po-boy ($11.95), which came with waffle fries.

Abby’s seafood pot was of a substantial size, teeming with mussels, clams, and shrimp. She said, “It was a seafood explosion in my mouth that was to die for. The value is unreal.” Kelly’s snapper was so moist that she didn’t feel the need to use any of her tartar sauce with it. She commented, “It’s fantastic. You can tell that
