Andalucía Tapas Bar & Restaurant: Authentic Spanish Flavors to Eat Easy

“Andalucía” is an autonomous community of Spain and, loosely translated, means “to walk easy.” It’s a perfect name for the Tequesta/Jupiter-area restaurant, as Andalucía Tapas Bar & Restaurant mirrors the spirit of the very action itself, of “walking easy,” of relishing the moment and truly tasting your food. It’s a very comforting atmosphere in which to relax after a long day at work. Or, on busier weekend evenings, the restaurant transforms, just as the city it’s named after does, into an uplifting, intoxicating space that not only still serves incredible Spanish- and Mediterraneanstyle tapas (i.e. “appetizerlike” plates), entrées, and beer/wine, but also showcases live entertainment.

Dining at Andalucía Tapas Bar and Restaurant is like going on a vacation to southern Spain. As the birthplace of Flamenco dancing and producer of what many call the “world’s best olive oil,” the region of Andalucía is also an apt name for the establishment because of that live entertainment I mentioned previously.

On Friday nights at Andalucía Tapas Bar & Restaurant, you will enjoy live music and Flamenco dancing as you savor their complimentary freshly baked bread paired with enticingly aromatic olive oil for dipping.

The bread and oil is certainly delicious, but you cannot stop there! The restaurant’s menu has way more to offer...

Abby and I sampled four of Andalucía’s most popular tapas, and recommend that you do the same: 1.) Camarones Ajillo ($17.95) This starter, otherwise known as garlic shrimp, is the perfect choice for a

light, refreshing, and slightly spicy start to your meal. Cooked with that famous olive oil, plus hot pepper, white wine, and, of course, garlic, the succulent shrimp has a delightfully crisp smack that’s dangerously addicting… you’ll be craving more just after your first bite!

2.) Queso de Carba Relleno ($14.95) My personal favorite, these stuffed goat cheese and crabmeat balls are loaded with luscious layers of flavor! The soft and creamy mixture inside is a combination of earthiness and sweetness, the latter of which is augmented by a saccharine glaze drizzled over the plate.

3.) Montadito Solomillo (MP) This appetizer’s name is so deceiving, because it is so much more than its loose translation – “a small sirloin sandwich.” It’s sumptuously tender filet mignon topped with sweet, nutty Manchego cheese, caramelized onions, and honey walnuts on tasteful toast points. I’ve never tasted anything like it in my entire life, and I don’t know that I ever will again… it’s extraordinarily delicious. If you’re a steak-lover, then this is the dish for you.

4.) Tabla Variada ($18.95) A Spanish-style charcuterie, the tabla variada comes with a comprehensive sampling of some of the world’s most renowned meats and cheeses imported directly from Spain, including chorizo Iberico (dry-cured sausage), jamón serrano (dry-cured ham), 6-month aged Manchego, salchicón (summer sausage), and murcia al vino (wine-soaked goat cheese), amongst others. This tapa is an excellent choice if you’re new to Spanish cuisine because it’s an easy introduction to the culture’s rich, thoughtful flavors.

After our tapas excursion, Abby and I moved onto our main dish: the Paella Valenciana ($35.95).

This entrée, which is big enough for 2 people to share, is packed full of fresh, high-quality shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, calamari, chicken, and chorizo. It’s silky and lush in texture, with a vibrant medley of colors and flavors that dance as gracefully on your tongue as the Flamenco dancers on the stage. After just a few bites, you will feel warmly satiated by the paella’s rustic richness.

Abby and I felt as if we were on vacation while dining at Andalucía, so how could we say ‘no’ to dessert? We shared the Spanish flan, a custard/pudding-like dessert soaked in caramel syrup. The flan is light and fluffy, with a milky creaminess that is beautifully accentuated by plenty of sweet caramel sauce. For a balanced

treat that isn’t overly sugary, this classic Spanish treat is a wonderful selection.

o, I have gotten back into reading just about everything I can get my hands on, after watching tons of movies on Netflix, and remember now, how much I enjoy it! Not that I stopped reading, you understand, but more that I decide to give up a book after thirty or so pages if the content doesn’t interest me. I used to feel compelled to finish every book I started because, as a writer, I wanted to show my support to the author, which I know is completely pointless, because the author doesn’t have super-powers and cannot possibly know that I have given up.

Anyway, I find myself reading several books at a time, one for reference, one for paranormal, one for romance, one for mystery, and have books stacked up all over the house. I find it comforting, if not a ironic reminder of my deceased father, who used to also have books stacked up by his reading chair, all opened, all being read at the same time. I found myself judging his behavior as odd, and now, it appears I have followed in his footsteps. Funny how we find ourselves becoming our parents sooner or later!

Anyway, I picked up this book called The Deep Places, written by Ross Douthat. It’s a memoir of illness and discovery, which interested me because of my nursing background.

The book is about a New York Times columnist, at the prime of life, who has acquired Lyme disease from a tick bite, although he was never diagnosed immediately, and by the time he had gone from one doctor to another, it 30

was mere speculation as to why he suffered such muscle and joint pain.

That, in and of itself, was interesting, but more than that, it really brought to light, chronic illness and the people who suffer from sometimes unidentified illnesses and pain which baffle physicians, or worse, find physicians who believe that symptoms that don’t respond to treatment come from a place of hypochondriasis. The physical anguish that he suffered, was second only to the mental anguish of other people’s skepticism, as if he no longer knew his own body, and was forced to believe that perhaps, his symptoms, were part of an underlying mental disorder. It was only until he found the strength to stand up for himself, to rally physicians who believed him, that he finally comes to terms with not only his suffering, but that of thousands of others who have fallen through the cracks of a medical profession dictated by time constraints, insurance companies, and the Almighty dollar. A point he made, that really stuck with me, is that when a catastrophe occurs among family or friends, everyone gathers around to try to help, to offer compassion and sympathy, and cards wishing a speedy recovery. But as days turn into weeks, then months and then years, those people, who mean well, cannot sustain giving what the ill person needs. They become tired of the whole ordeal, and even if their words are the right ones, mentally they have moved on with their own lives, leaving the patient either to lie about “feeling better,” or to isolate themselves from the

people and activities that were once pleasurable. I find this accurate, and depressing, because most of us are not hardwired to stagnate, and thus, many go forward, while those with chronic illness have to hang back.

I also learned quite a bit about Lyme disease, and was astounded that it wasn’t really recognized as a very serious illness and one that can cause physical and neurological damage for years, until 1991.

So, although it is more prevalent in the woods, and especially up north, (hence, think Lyme, Connecticut) it can be carried into the house on your pets in Florida.

Check them carefully, to avoid what this man and his young family had to deal with.
